Details of the novel luminescence of the leuco forms of the thiazine dyes, methylene blue and thionine, are reported, including their emission maxima, quantum yields and lifetimes of the luminescence. Other work shows that this luminescence is independent of reducing agent type and solution pH and is a common feature of most thiazine dyes.

Photoluminescence, thermoluminescence and phosphorescence studies of cerium and copper doped BaS phosphors are attempted. Cu+ centres in BaS lattice activate red emission while Ce3+ sensitize the blue emission. Results are explained on the basis of superposition theory involving monomolecular kinetics. In Randall and Wilkins model, the decay and TL studies are found to corelate each other.

We present theoretical photoluminescence (PL) spectra of undoped and p-doped Al(x)In(1-xy)Ga(y)N/Al(X)In(1) (X) (Y)Ga(Y)N double quantum wells (DQWs). The calculations were performed within the k.p method by means of solving a full eight-band Kane Hamiltonian together with the Poisson equation in a plane wave representation, including exchange-correlation effects within the local density approximation. Strain effects due to the lattice mismatch are also taken into account. We show the calculated PL spectra, analyzing the blue and red-shifts in energy as one varies the spike and the well widths, as well as the acceptor doping concentration. We found a transition between a regime of isolated quantum wells and that of interacting DQWs. Since there are few studies of optical properties of quantum wells based on nitride quaternary alloys, the results reported here will provide guidelines for the interpretation of forthcoming experiments. Terbium (Tb) doped LaMgAl(11)O(19) phosphors have been prepared by the combustion of corresponding metal nitrates (oxidizer) and urea (fuel) at furnace temperature as low as 500 C Combustion synthesized powder phosphor was characterized by X-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy techniques LaMgAl(11)O(19) doped with trivalent terbium ions emit weakly in blue and orange light region and strongly in green light region when excited by the ultraviolet light of 261 nm Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) studies were carried out to study the defect centres Induced in the phosphor by gamma irradiation and also to identify the defect centres responsible for the thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) process Room temperature ESR spectrum of irradiated phosphor appears to be a superposition of at least two defect centres One of the centres (centre I) with principal g-values g(parallel to) = 2 0417 and g(perpendicular to) = 2 0041 is identified as O(2)(-) ion while centre II with an axially symmetric g-tensor with principal values g(parallel to) = 19698 and g(perpendicular to) = 1 9653 is assigned to an F(+) centre (singly ionized oxygen vacancy) An additional defect centre is observed during thermal annealing experiments and this centre (assigned to F(+) centre) seems to originate from an F centre (oxygen vacancy with two electrons) The F centre and also the F+ centre appear to correlate with the observed high temperature TSL peak in LaMgAl(11)O(19) Tb phosphor (C) 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS All rights reserved

Intense violet-blue photoluminescence (PL) emission at room temperature was verified in BaZrO3 (BZO) powders with structural order-disorder. Ab-initio calculations, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy and PL were performed. Theoretical results showed that the local disorder in the network-formed Zr clusters present an important role in the formation of hole-electron pair. The experimental data and theoretical results are in agreement, indicating that the PL emission in BZO powders can be related to the structural order-disorder degree in the lattice. Red, blue and green emitting rare earth compounds (RE(3+) = Eu(3+), Gd(3+) and Tb(3+)) containing the benzenetricarboxylate ligands (BTC) [hemimellitic (EMA), trimellitic (TLA) and trimesic (TMA)] were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, complexometric titration, X-ray diffraction patterns, thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The complexes presented the following formula: [RE(EMA)(H(2)O)(2)], [RE(TLA)(H(2)O)(4)] and [RE(TMA)(H(2)O)(G)], except for Tb-TMA compound, which was obtained only as anhydrous. Phosphorescence data of Gd(3+)-(BTC) complexes showed that the triplet states (T) of the BTC(3-) anions have energy higher than the main emitting states of the Eu(3+) ((5)D(0)) and Tb(3+) ((5)D(4)), indicating that BTC ligands can act as intramolecular energy donors for these metal ions. The high values of experimental intensity parameters (Omega(2)) of Eu(3+)-(BTC) complexes indicate that the europium ion is in a highly polarizable chemical environment. Based on the luminescence spectra, the energy transfer from the T state of BTC ligands to the excited (5)D(0) and (5)D(4) levels of the Eu(3+) and Tb(3+) ions is discussed. The emission quantum efficiencies (eta) of the (5)D(0) emitting level of the Eu(3+) ion have been also determined. In the case of the Tb(3+) ion, the photoluminescence data show the high emission intensity of the characteristic transitions (5)D(4) -> (7)F(J) (J=0-6), indicating that the BTC ligands are good sensitizers. The RE(3+)-(BTC) complexes act as efficient light conversion molecular devices (LCMDs) and can be used as tricolor luminescent materials. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Frequency upconversion luminescence in erbium-doped PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2-based transparent glass ceramics (TGC) under 980 nm infrared excitation is investigated. Upconversion emission signals around 410, 525, 550, 660, and 850 nm were generated and identified as due to the H-2(9/2) H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2), and F-4(9/2) transitions to the I-4(15/2) ground-state, and S-4(3/2)-I-4(13/2), respectively. The erbium ions excited-state emitting levels were populated via a combination of stepwise ground-state absorption (GSA), excited-state absorption (ESA), and cross-relaxation processes. The results also disclosed that both blue (410 nm) and red (660 nm) upconversion emission signals in the transparent glass ceramic sample presented twice as much intensity as compared to its vitreous counterpart. Infrared-to-visible upconversion luminescence emission in Nd3+-doped 60TeO(2)-10GeO(2)-10K(2)O-10Li(2)O-10Nb(2)O(5) tellurite glasses under cw excitation around 800 nm is investigated. Blue (430, and 475 nm), green (5 0 nm) and yellow-orange (590 nm) energy upconversion emission owing to the P-2(1/2) --> I-4(j) (j=9/2, 11/2, 13/2 and 15/2) transitions of the Nd3+ ions, respectively, was recorded. The dependence of the upconversion intensity upon the excitation wavelength and pump power is also studied. The upconversion excitation mechanism responsible for the observed emission signals is attributed to stepwise multiphoton absorption. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Blue-green and red photoluminescence (PL) emission in structurally disordered CaTiO3:Sm (CT:Sm) powders was observed at room temperature with laser excitation at 350.7 nm. The perovskite-like titanate CT:Sm powders prepared by a soft chemical processing at different temperatures of annealing were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES). The results indicate that the generation of the broad PL band is related to order-disorder degree in the perovskitelike structure. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this work, Eu(III) and Eu(II) doped gadolinium silicates has been obtained as compact tubes starting from spherical gadolinium hydroxide carbonate using the pores of silica matrix as support and its surface as reagent. Eu(III) doped gadolinium silicate with hexagonal phase shows an interesting visible shifted charge transfer band when compared to disilicate with orthorhombic phase that was also obtained. Eu(II) gadolinium silicate has been prepared using CO atmosphere presenting an intense blue emission. The divalent europium system shows a potential application as an UV-blue converter. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD) and photoluminescence spectroscopy. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Energy-transfer excited upconversion luminescence in Ho3+/Yb3+- and Tb3+/Yb3+ -codoped PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2 glass and glass-ceramic under infrared excitation is investigated. In Ho3+/Yb3+-codoped samples, green (545 nm), red (652 nm), and near-infrared (754 nm) upconversion emission corresponding to the S-5(2) (F-5(4)) -> I-5(8), F-5(5) -> I-5(8), and S-5(2)(F-5(4)) -> I-5(7) transitions, respectively, was observed. Blue (490 nm) emission assigned to the F-5(2,3) -> I-5(8) transition was also detected. In the Tb3+/Yb3+-codoped system, bright UV-visible emission around 384, 415, 438, 473-490, 545, 587, and 623 nm, identified as due to the D-5(3)((5)G(6)) -> F-7(J)(J = 6, 5, 4) and D-5(4) -> F-7(J)(J = 6, 5, 4, 3) transitions, was measured. The comparison of the upconversion process in glass ceramic and its glassy precursor revealed that the former samples present much higher upconversion efficiencies. The dependence of the upconversion emission upon pump power, and doping contents was also examined. The results indicated that successive energy-transfer between ytterbium and holmium ions and cooperative energy-transfer between ytterbium and terbium ions followed by excited-state absorption are the dominant upconversion excitation mechanisms herein involved. The viability of using the samples for three-dimensional solid-state color displays is also discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
