Konputagarritasunaren Teoriaren oinarriak lehenengo ordenadoreak azaldu aurretik (40. hamarkadaren bukaera aldera) ezarri ziren, eta ziztu biziko eta etenik gabeko eraldaketek aldatzea lortu ez duten oinarriak dira. Alan Mathison Turing-ek jadanik garai hartan frogatu zuen, ahalik eta potentzia handienekoa imajinatuta ere, inolako ordenadorek ebatzi ezingo zituen zenbait gai edo arazo bazeudela. Balizko algoritmorik ez duten problema horiek, konputaezinak deitzen ditugunak, ez dira salbuespenak eta adibide ugari aurki dezakegu. Programen portaeraren inguruan planteatzen diren problemen artean, asko konputaezinak dira. Familia horretako kide ezagunena, zalantzarik gabe, geratze problema da: sarrerako datu zehatz batzuk hartzerakoan, programa bat begizta infinituan geratuko ote den era orokorrean erabakitzeko algoritmorik ez dago. Problema baten konputaezintasuna frogatzeko, hau ebatziko duen algoritmo zehatz bat existitzen ez dela ziurtatuko duen argumentu logikoa behar dugu, edo beste era batera esanda, existitzen diren algoritmoak problema hori ebazteko gai izango ez direla egiaztatuko duen argumentua. Izaera unibertsaleko argumentu hori ezartzea ez da batere erraza izaten, eta normalean, absurduraino eramandako frogapen batekin erlazionatuta egon ohi da. Helburu hori lortzeko zenbait teknika daude. Diagonalizazioaren teknika horien artean oinarrizkoena da, eta nahiko ezaguna, ez baita Informatika Teorikoaren tresna espezifikoa. Dokumentu honen helburua ez da teknika bera azaldu edo deskribatzea, ezaguntzat hartzen baita, zailtasun maila desberdineko hainbat adibideren bitartez argitzea baizik.

At present, there is much anxiety regarding the security of energy supplies; for example, the UK and other European States are set to become increasingly dependant upon imports of natural gas from states with which political relations are often strained. These uncertainties are felt acutely by the electricity generating sector, which is facing major challenges regarding the choice of fuel mix in the years ahead. Nuclear energy may provide an alternative; however, in the UK, progress in replacing the first generation reactors is exceedingly slow. A number of operators are looking to coal as a means of plugging the energy gap. However, in the light of ever more stringent legal controls on emissions, this step cannot be taken without the adoption of sophisticated pollution abatement technology. This article examines the role which legal concepts such as Best Available Techniques (BAT) must play in bringing about these changes.

The performance of breathable roofing membranes (BRM’s) in buildings where bats roost have been investigated using experimental measurements and numerical simulations. Measurement techniques as outlined in BS EN ISO 12572 of membranes from manufacturers in its pure state and those that have been contaminated with bat urine, faeces and natural oils transmitted via fur because they were found in bat roost have been tested for their permeability functions. The findings from this shows that there are significant differences between the functionality of the pure samples compared to the contaminated samples, with an average of about 20-30% reduction in functionality. This paper integrates modelling techniques using a heat, air and mass software with a simulink interface on a Matlab platform to investigate the moisture transfer properties of the BRMs. The simulation results demonstrate high level of condensation formation when the BRM is contaminated as compared to when it is not.

In networks of plant-animal mutualisms, different animal groups interact preferentially with different plants, thus forming distinct modules responsible for different parts of the service. However, what we currently know about seed dispersal networks is based only on birds. Therefore, we wished to fill this gap by studying bat-fruit networks and testing how they differ from bird-fruit networks. As dietary overlap of Neotropical bats and birds is low, they should form distinct mutualistic modules within local networks. Furthermore, since frugivory evolved only once among Neotropical bats, but several times independently among Neotropical birds, greater dietary overlap is expected among bats, and thus connectance and nestedness should be higher in bat-fruit networks. If bat-fruit networks have higher nestedness and connectance, they should be more robust to extinctions. We analyzed 1 mixed network of both bats and birds and 20 networks that consisted exclusively of either bats (11) or birds (9). As expected, the structure of the mixed network was both modular (M = 0.45) and nested (NODF = 0.31); one module contained only birds and two only bats. In 20 datasets with only one disperser group, bat-fruit networks (NODF = 0.53 +/- A 0.09, C = 0.30 +/- A 0.11) were more nested and had a higher connectance than bird-fruit networks (NODF = 0.42 +/- A 0.07, C = 0.22 +/- A 0.09). Unexpectedly, robustness to extinction of animal species was higher in bird-fruit networks (R = 0.60 +/- A 0.13) than in bat-fruit networks (R = 0.54 +/- A 0.09), and differences were explained mainly by species richness. These findings suggest that a modular structure also occurs in seed dispersal networks, similar to pollination networks. The higher nestedness and connectance observed in bat-fruit networks compared with bird-fruit networks may be explained by the monophyletic evolution of frugivory in Neotropical bats, among which the diets of specialists seem to have evolved from the pool of fruits consumed by generalists.

The fruit bat Artibeus lituratus absorbs large amounts of glucose in short periods of time and maintains normoglycemia even after a prolonged starvation period. Based on these data, we aimed to investigate various aspects related with glucose homeostasis analyzing: blood glucose and insulin levels, intraperitoneal glucose and insulin tolerance tests (ipGTT and ipITT), glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (2.8, 5.6 or 8.3 mmol/L glucose) in pancreas fragments, cellular distribution of beta cells, and the amount of pAkt/Akt in the pectoral muscle and liver. Blood glucose levels were higher in fed bats (6.88 +/- 0.5 mmol/L) than fasted bats (4.0 +/- 0.8 mmol/L), whereas insulin levels were similar in both conditions. The values of the area-under-the curve obtained from ipGTT were significantly higher when bats received 2 (5.5-fold) or 3 g/kg glucose (7.5-fold) b.w compared to control (saline). These bats also exhibited a significant decrease of blood glucose values after insulin administration during the iplTT. Insulin secretion from fragments of pancreas under physiological concentrations of glucose (5.6 or 8.3 mmol/L) was similar but higher than in 2.8 mmol/L glucose 1.8- and 2.0-fold, respectively. These bats showed a marked beta-cell distribution along the pancreas, and the pancreatic beta cells are not exclusively located at the central part of the islet. The insulin-induced Akt phosphorylation was more pronounced in the pectoral muscle, compared to liver. The high sensitivity to glucose and insulin, the proper insulin response to glucose, and the presence of an apparent large beta-cell population could represent benefits for the management of high influx of glucose from a carbohydrate-rich meal, which permits appropriate glucose utilization. Bats tend to have less intestinal tissue than comparably sized nonflying mammals. The corresponding reduction in intestinal volume and hence mass of digesta carried is advantageous because the costs of flight increase with load carried and because take-off and maneuverability are diminished at heavier masses. Water soluble compounds, such as glucose and amino acids, are absorbed in the small intestine mainly via two pathways, the transporter-mediated transcellular and the passive, paracellular pathways. Using the microchiropteran bat Artibeus literatus (mean mass 80.6 +/- 3.7 g), we tested the predictions that absorption of water-soluble compounds that are not actively transported would be extensive as a compensatory mechanism for relatively less intestinal tissue, and would decline with increasing molecular mass in accord with sieve-like paracellular absorption. Using a standard pharmacokinetic technique, we fed, or injected intraperitonealy the metabolically inert carbohydrates L-rhamnose (molecular mass = 164 Da) and cellobiose (molecular mass = 342 Da) which are absorbed only by paracellular transport, and 3-O-methyl-D-glucose (3OMD-glucose) which is absorbed via both mediated (active) and paracellular transport. As predicted, the bioavailability of paracellular probes declined with increasing molecular mass (rhamnose, 90 +/- 11%; cellobiose, 10 +/- 3%, n = 8) and was significantly higher in bats than has been reported for laboratory rats and other mammals. In addition, absorption of 3OMD-glucose was high (96 +/- 11%). We estimated that the bats rely on passive, paracellular absorption for more than 70% of their total glucose absorption, much more than in non-flying mammals. Although possibly compensating for less intestinal tissue, a high intestinal permeability that permits passive absorption might be less selective than a carrier-mediated system for nutrient absorption and might permit toxins to be absorbed from plant and animal material in the intestinal lumen.

Many factors can lead cells to apoptosis during the various stages of cell life. This study was undertaken to characterize germ cell death in the epididymis of the adult Artibeus lituratus by histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques using light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that cells with a nuclear phenotype and ultrastructural characteristics of chromatin compaction were common in apoptosis. The Apoptag test confirmed that the suspected cells were apoptotic. It is suggested that immature germ cells, when released from the germinative epithelium, may be directed towards the epididymis instead of being disposed of in the testicle. Furthermore, intact immature cells can leave the testicle in the initial phases of apoptosis and complete this phenomenon in the epididymis.
