Arctic ecosystems are warming rapidly, which is expected to promote soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition. In addition to the direct warming effect, decomposition can also be indirectly stimulated via increased plant productivity and plant-soil C allocation, and this so called "priming effect" might significantly alter the ecosystem C balance. In this study, we provide first mechanistic insights into the susceptibility of SOM decomposition in arctic permafrost soils to priming. By comparing 119 soils from four locations across the Siberian Arctic that cover all horizons of active layer and upper permafrost, we found that an increased availability of plant-derived organic C particularly stimulated decomposition in subsoil horizons where most of the arctic soil carbon is located. Considering the 1,035 Pg of arctic soil carbon, such an additional stimulation of decomposition beyond the direct temperature effect can accelerate net ecosystem C losses, and amplify the positive feedback to global warming.

This work is focused on studying the kinetics of esterification of levulinic acid in an isothermal batch reactor using ethanol as a reactant and as a protic polar solvent at the same time and in the presence of an acid catalyst (sulfuric acid). The choice of solvent is important as it affects the kinetics and thermodynamics of the reaction system moreover, the knowledge of the reaction kinetics plays an important role in the design of the process. This work is divided into two stages; The first stage is the experimental part in which the experimental matrix was developed by changing the process variables one at a time (temperature, molar ratio between reactants, and catalyst concentration) in order to study their influence on the kinetics; the second stage is using the obtained data from the experiments to build the modeling part in order to estimate the thermodynamics parameters.

We adopt the Dirac model for quasiparticles in graphene and calculate the finite-temperature Casimir interaction between a suspended graphene layer and a parallel conducting surface. We find that at high temperature, the Casimir interaction in such system is just one-half of that for two ideal conductors separated by the same distance. In this limit, a single graphene layer behaves exactly as a Drude metal. In particular, the contribution of the TE mode is suppressed, while the contribution of the TM mode saturates at the ideal-metal value. The behavior of the Casimir interaction for intermediate temperatures and separations accessible in experiments is studied in some detail. We also find an interesting interplay between two fundamental constants of graphene physics: the fine-structure constant and the Fermi velocity.

The salt-induced precipitation of lysozyme from aqueous solutions was studied through precipitation assays in which the equilibrium compositions of the coexisting phases were determined. Lysozyme precipitation experiments were carried out at 5, 15 and 25 degrees C and pH 7.0 with ammonium sulfate, sodium sulfate and sodium chloride as precipitating agents. In these experiments a complete separation of the coexisting phases (liquid and solid) could not be achieved. Nevertheless it was possible to determine the composition of the precipitate. The enzymatic activity of lysozyme in the supernatant phase as well as in the precipitate phase was also determined. The activity balance suggests that there is a relationship between the composition of the true precipitate and the total activity recovery. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The temperature influence on the gate-induced floating body effect (GIFBE) in fully depleted (FD) silicon-on-insulator (SOI) nMOSFETs is investigated, based on experimental results and two-dimensional numerical simulations. The GIFBE behavior will be evaluated taking into account the impact of carrier recombination and of the effective electric field mobility degradation on the second peak in the transconductance (gm). This floating body effect is also analyzed as a function of temperature. It is shown that the variation of the studied parameters with temperature results in a ""C"" shape of the threshold voltage corresponding with the second peak in the gm curve. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. The effect of skin temperature and hydration status has been suggested by some researchers as a common cause of variation in bioimpedance measurements of the body. This paper details a simple method of measuring the transverse impedance of the skin. The measured resistance and reactance was found to decrease by 35% and 18% for an increase of 20 degrees C. Similarly a decrease in resistance and reactance of 20% and 25% respectively was detected after hydration of the skin. However, the changes in skin temperature and hydration were found to have no significant effect on the whole body bioimpedance measurements using the standard tetra-polar electrode technique. The effect of irradiation temperature on the polymer properties was investigated for the fluoroelastomer poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-perfluoromethylvinyl ether) (TFE/PMVE). TFE/PMVE samples were gamma-irradiated to 150 kGy at temperatures ranging from 77 K to 373 K. Analysis of the sol/gel behaviour, tensile properties, and glass transition temperatures indicated that crosslinking commenced in the temperature range 195 to 263 K, for a dose of 150 kGy. The latter temperature was 13 K below the glass transition temperature. Crosslinking remained relatively constant to higher temperatures. Chain scission reactions were found to occur well below the glass transition temperature and increased at higher temperatures. The optimum temperature for the radiation crosslinking of TFE/PMVE, for the temperatures investigated, was 263 K. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Methods of promoting the radiation-induced cross linking of poly(tetrafluoro-ethylene-co-perfluoromethyl vinyl ether) (TFE/PMVE) have been investigated. Greater control of the crosslinking and chain-scission reactions was achieved by varying the radiolysis temperature. This was attributed to temperature affecting the mobilities of reactive species such as polymeric free radicals. These reactive species are precursors to radiation-induced cross links and chain-ends. Analysis of the sol/gel behaviour, tensile properties and FTIR indicated that the optimum temperature for the radiation crosslinking of TFE/PMVE, at a dose of 150 kGy, was 263 K. This temperature was 10 K below the glass transition temperature. Incorporation of 1 wt% triallyl isocyanurate (TAIC) greatly amplified the radiation crosslinking of TFE/PMVE, The dose for gelation was decreased by 70%, and the additive imparted superior mechanical properties compared to the neat irradiated TFE/PMVE. Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements showed higher radical yields at 77 K with the 1 wt% TAIC, indicating that the crosslinking promoter was acting as a radical trap. In this work we report the adsorption of phenylalanine (Phe) on Magnesium Aluminum Layered Double Hydroxides (Mg-Al-CO(3)-LDH) at two different temperatures (298 and 310 K) and under two distinct ionic strength conditions (with and without the addition 0.1 M of NaCl). The adsorption isotherms exhibit the same profile in all conditions, and they only differ in the amount of removed Phe. At lower ionic strength, the isotherms are almost identical at both temperatures, except for the last points, where the increase in temperature causes a decrease in the amount of adsorbed Phe. An increase in ionic strength results in a decrease in Phe adsorption. The electrokinetic potential decreases as the amount of adsorbed Phe increases, and only positive values are observed. This indicates that the surface of the adsorbent is not totally neutralized and suggests that more Phe could be removed by adsorption. The presence of Phe on the solid is confirmed by FTIR spectra, which present the specific bands assigned to Phe. The hydrophobicity of the amino acid probably contributes to its extraction, thus enabling the removal of a great amount of Phe. In conclusion, LDH is potentially applicable in the removal of Phe from wastewater.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of the opaque layer firing temperature and mechanical and thermal cycling on the flexural strength of a ceramic fused to commercial cobalt-chromium alloy (Co-Cr). The hypotheses were that higher opaque layer temperatures increase the metal/ceramic bond strength and that aging reduces the bond strength. Materials and Methods: Metallic frameworks (25 x 3 x 0.5 mm(3); ISO 9693) (N = 60) were cast in Co-Cr and airborne-particle abraded (Al(2)O(3): 150 mu m) at the central area of the frameworks (8 x 3 mm(2)) and divided into three groups (N = 20), according to the opaque layer firing temperature: Gr1 (control)-900 degrees C; Gr2-950 degrees C; Gr3-1000 degrees C. The opaque ceramic (Opaque, Vita Zahnfabrick, Bad Sackingen, Germany) was applied, and the glass ceramic (Vita Omega 900, Vita Zahnfabrick) was fired onto it (thickness: 1 mm). While half the specimens from each group were randomly tested without aging (water storage: 37 degrees C/24 hours), the other half were mechanically loaded (20,000 cycles; 50 N load; distilled water at 37 degrees C) and thermocycled (3000 cycles; 5 degrees C to 55 degrees C, dwell time: 30 seconds). After the flexural strength test, failure types were noted. The data were analyzed using 2-way ANOVA and Tukey`s test (alpha = 0.05). Results: Gr2 (19.41 +/- 5.5 N) and Gr3 (20.6 +/- 5 N) presented higher values than Gr1 (13.3 +/- 1.6 N) (p = 0.001). Mechanical and thermal cycling did not significantly influence the mean flexural strength values (p > 0.05). Increasing the opaque layer firing temperature improved the flexural bond strength values (p < 0.05). The hypotheses were partially accepted. Conclusion: Increasing of the opaque layer firing temperature improved the flexural bond strength between ceramic fused to Co-Cr alloy.

Methanol is an alcohol which is metabolized to folmaldehyde in humans. It is a very toxic substance, responsible for blindness in cases of methanol intoxication. This study shows the production of methanol when aspartame is used to sweeten coffee brew. The temperature versus pH binomium was also tested. When assayed at 90 degrees C coffee brew+aspartame and aspartame solution showed an increase in methanol release of 17.8 and 19.3%, respectively, as compared with coffee brew. At 180 degrees C, the increase was 32.5 and 26.3%, respectively. Our data revealed a protective effect of the pH of coffee on the degradation of aspartame and formation of methanol; an important fact, mainly for specific populations that use aspartame, like diabetics.

Little is known about the effect of temperature on viability of free-living phases of the life cycle of Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreille, 1806) despite of its importance as vector of several pathogens. Knowledge of the effect of abiotic factors on the capacity of a given tick species to infest new hosts is important for routine experimental activities under laboratory conditions, and may be relevant to understand the transmission of pathogens. The study evaluates the viability of R. sanguineus females held at 18 +/- 1, 27 +/- 1 and 32 +/- 1 degrees C and 80 +/- 5% RH (saturation deficits of 3.0, 5.3 and 7.2 mmHg, respectively) for three fasting periods (3 and 20 days and the day when female mortality reached approximately 50% after ecdysis), under laboratory conditions. In general, the best result on viability was obtained when rabbits were infested with unfed female ticks after three or 20 fasting days at both 27 +/- 1 and 32 +/- 1 degrees C and 80 +/- 5% RH.

The aim of this work was to determine the effect of temperature and heating rate on the densification of four leucite-based dental porcelains: two low-fusion (Dentsply Ceramco and Ivoclar) and two high-fusion commercial porcelains (Dentsply Ceramco). Porcelain powders were characterized by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), particle size distribution, helium picnometry, and by scanning electron microscopy. Test specimens were sintered from 600 to 1050 degrees C, with heating rates of 55 degrees C/min and 10 degrees C/min. The bulk density of the specimens was measured by the Archimedes method in water, and microstructures of fracture surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that densification of specimens increased with the increase in temperature. The increase in the heating rate had no effect on the densification of the porcelains studied. Both high-fusion materials and one of the low-fusing porcelains reached the maximum densification at a temperature that was 50 degrees C lower than that recommended by the manufactures. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of different ion-exchange temperatures on the biaxial flexural strength (sigma(f)), hardness (HV) and indentation fracture resistance (K(IF)) of a dental porcelain. Disk-shaped specimens were divided into five groups (n = 10) and submitted to an ion-exchange procedure using KNO(3) paste for 15 min in the following temperatures (degrees C); (I) 430; (II) 450; (III) 470; (IV) 490; (V) 510; and control (no ion exchange). The value of sigma(f) was determined in artificial saliva at 37 degrees C. The values of HV and K(IF) were obtained using 3 Vickers indentations in each specimen (19.6 N). Results showed that ion exchange increases significantly the properties of the material as compared to the control and no significant differences were found among the temperatures tested for any of the properties studied.
