Sähkökoneiden suunnittelussa finiit-tielementtimenetelmien (FEM) käyttö on vakiintunut haastavimmissa sovelluksissa. Kone Oyj:llä nostokoneistoina käytetään aksiaalivuokestomagneettitahtikoneita (AFPMSM), joiden FEM simu-lointiin käytetään yleisesti kolmea eri tapaa. Kukin näistä vaihtoehdoista pitää sisällään omat hyö-tynsä, että haittansa. Suunnittelun kannalta tärkeää on oikean menetelmän valinta ai-ka/informatiivisuus suhteen maksimoimiseksi. Erittäin tärkeää on myös saatujen tulosten oikeelli-suus. Tämän diplomityön tavoite on kehittää järjestelmä, jonka avulla AFPMS-koneen voimia voidaan mitata yksityiskohtaisella tasolla. Työn tuloksena on mittajärjestelmän suunnitelma, jonka avulla voidaan toteuttaa kuuden vapausas-teen voimamittaus jokaiselle koneistomagneetille alle 1N resoluutiolla. Suunnitellun järjestelmän toimivuutta on tarkasteltu FE-menetelmiä käyttäen ja järjestelmässä käytettävän voima-anturin ky-vykkyyttä on todennettu referenssimittauksin. Suunniteltu mittajärjestelmä mahdollistaa sähkömoottorin useiden eri epäideaalisuuksien tarkaste-lun yksityiskohtaisella tasolla. Mittausajatuksen soveltaminen myös muiden koneiden tutkimiseen tarjoaa mahdollisuuksia jatkotutkimuksille.

The use of telerobotic systems is essential for remote handling (RH) operations in radioactive areas of scientific facilities that generate high doses of radiation. Recent developments in remote handling technology has seen a great deal of effort being directed towards the design of modular remote handling control rooms equipped with a standard master arm which will be used to separately control a range of different slave devices. This application thus requires a kinematically dissimilar master-slave control scheme. In order to avoid drag and other effects such as friction or other non-linear and unmodelled slave arm effects of the common position-position architecture in nonbackdrivable slaves, this research has implemented a force-position control scheme. End-effector force is derived from motor torque values which, to avoid the use of radiation intolerant and costly sensing devices, are inferred from motor current measurement. This has been demonstrated on a 1-DOF test-rig with a permanent magnet synchronous motor teleoperated by a Sensable Phantom Omni® haptic master. This has been shown to allow accurate control while realistically conveying dynamic force information back to the operator.

Synchronous reluctance motors (SynRMs) are gaining in popularity in industrial drives due to their permanent magnet-free, competitive performance, and robust features. This paper studies the power losses in a 90-kW converter-fed SynRM drive by a calorimetric method in comparison of the traditional input-output method. After the converter and the motor were measured simultaneously in separate chambers, the converter was installed inside the large-size chamber next to the motor and the total drive system losses were obtained using one chamber. The uncertainty of both measurement methods is analyzed and discussed.

Permanent-magnet (PM) synchronous machines (PMSMs) can provide excellent performance in terms of torque density, energy efficiency, and controllability. However, PMs on the rotor are prone to centrifugal force, which may break their physical integrity, particularly at high-speed operation. Typically, PMs are bound with carbon fiber or retained by alloy sleeves on the rotor surface. This paper is concerned with the design of a rotor retaining sleeve for a 1.12-MW 18-kr/min PM machine; its electromagnetic performance is investigated by the 2-D finite-element method (FEM). Theoretical and numerical analyses of the rotor stress are carried out. For the carbon fiber protective measure, the stresses of three PM configurations and three pole filler materials are compared in terms of operating temperature, rotor speed, retaining sleeve thickness, and interference fit. Then, a new hybrid protective measure is proposed and analyzed by the 2-D FEM for operational speeds up to 22 kr/min (1.2 times the rated speed). The rotor losses and machine temperatures with the carbon fiber retaining sleeve and the hybrid retaining sleeve are compared, and the sleeve design is refined. Two rotors using both designs are prototyped and experimentally tested to validate the effectiveness of the developed techniques for PM machines. The developed retaining sleeve makes it possible to operate megawatt PM machines at high speeds of 22 kr/min. This opens doors for many high-power high-speed applications such as turbo-generator, aerospace, and submarine motor drives.

Due to high-speed rotation, the problems about rotor mechanics and dynamics for outer rotor high-speed machine are more serious than conventional ones, in view of above problems the mechanical and dynamics analysis for an outer rotor high-speed permanent magnet claw pole motor are carried out. The rotor stress analytical calculation model was derived, then the stress distribution is calculated by finite element method also, which is coincided with that calculated by analytical model. In addition, the stress distribution of outer rotor yoke and PMs considering centrifugal force and temperature effect has been calculated, some influence factors on rotor stress distribution have been analyzed such as pole-arc coefficient and speed. The rotor natural frequency and critical speed were calculated by vibration mode analysis, and its dynamics characteristics influenced by gyroscope effect were analyzed based on Campbell diagram. Based on the analysis results above an outer rotor permanent magnet high-speed claw pole motor is design and verified.

Power generation from alternative sources is at present the subject of numerous research and development in science and industry. Wind energy stands out in this scenario as one of the most prominent alternative in the generation of electricity, by its numerous advantages. In research works, computer reproduction and experimental behavior of a wind turbine are very suitable tools for the development and study of new technologies and the use of wind potential of a given region. These tools generally are desired to include simulation of mechanical and electrical parameters that directly affect the energy conversion. This work presents the energy conversion process in wind systems for power generation, in order to develop a tool for wind turbine emulation testing experimental, using LabVIEW® software. The purpose of this tool is to emulate the torque developed in an axis wind turbine. The physical setup consists of a three phase induction motor and a permanent magnet synchronous generator, which are evaluated under different wind speed conditions. This tool has the objective to be flexible to other laboratory arrangements, and can be used in other wind power generation structures in real time. A modeling of the wind power system is presented, from the turbine to the electrical generator. A simulation tool is developed using Matlab/Simulink® with the purpose to pre-validate the experiment setup. Finally, the design is implemented in a laboratory setup.

Multi-phase electrical drives are potential candidates for the employment in innovative electric vehicle powertrains, in response to the request for high efficiency and reliability of this type of application. In addition to the multi-phase technology, in the last decades also, multilevel technology has been developed. These two technologies are somewhat complementary since both allow increasing the power rating of the system without increasing the current and voltage ratings of the single power switches of the inverter. In this thesis, some different topics concerning the inverter, the motor and the fault diagnosis of an electric vehicle powertrain are addressed. In particular, the attention is focused on multi-phase and multilevel technologies and their potential advantages with respect to traditional technologies. First of all, the mathematical models of two multi-phase machines, a five-phase induction machine and an asymmetrical six-phase permanent magnet synchronous machines are developed using the Vector Space Decomposition approach. Then, a new modulation technique for multi-phase multilevel T-type inverters, which solves the voltage balancing problem of the DC-link capacitors, ensuring flexible management of the capacitor voltages, is developed. The technique is based on the proper selection of the zero-sequence component of the modulating signals. Subsequently, a diagnostic technique for detecting the state of health of the rotor magnets in a six-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine is established. The technique is based on analysing the electromotive force induced in the stator windings by the rotor magnets. Furthermore, an innovative algorithm able to extend the linear modulation region for five-phase inverters, taking advantage of the multiple degrees of freedom available in multi-phase systems is presented. Finally, the mathematical model of an eighteen-phase squirrel cage induction motor is defined. This activity aims to develop a motor drive able to change the number of poles of the machine during the machine operation.

This paper presents a new integrated model for the simulation of wind energy systems. The proposed model is more realistic and accurate, considering a variable-speed wind turbine, two-mass rotor, permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), different power converter topologies, and filters. Additionally, a new control strategy is proposed for the variable-speed operation of wind turbines with PMSG/full-power converter topology, based on fractional-order controllers. Comprehensive simulation studies are carried out with matrix and multilevel power converter topologies, in order to adequately assert the system performance in what regards the quality of the energy injected into the electric grid. Finally, conclusions are duly drawn.

This paper is on variable-speed wind turbines with permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). Three different drive train mass models and three different topologies for the power-electronic converters are considered. The three different topologies considered are respectively a matrix, a two-level and a multilevel converter. A novel control strategy, based on fractional-order controllers, is proposed for the wind turbines. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the behaviour of the wind turbines during a converter control malfunction, considering the fractional-order controllers.
