Background, aim, and scope A coupled Life Cycle Costing and life cycle assessment has been performed for car-bodies of the Korean Tilting Train eXpress (TTX) project using European and Korean databases, with the objective of assessing environmental and cost performance to aid materials and process selection. More specifically, the potential of polymer composite car-body structures for the Korean Tilting Train eXpress (TTX) has been investigated. Materials and methods This assessment includes the cost of both carriage manufacturing and use phases, coupled with the life cycle environmental impacts of all stages from raw material production, through carriage manufacture and use, to end-of-life scenarios. Metallic carriages were compared with two composite options: hybrid steel-composite and full-composite carriages. The total planned production for this regional Korean train was 440 cars, with an annual production volume of 80 cars. Results and discussion The coupled analyses were used to generate plots of cost versus energy consumption and environmental impacts. The results show that the raw material and manufacturing phase costs are approximately half of the total life cycle costs, whilst their environmental impact is relatively insignificant (3-8%). The use phase of the car-body has the largest environmental impact for all scenarios, with near negligible contributions from the other phases. Since steel rail carriages weigh more (27-51%), the use phase cost is correspondingly higher, resulting in both the greatest environmental impact and the highest life cycle cost. Compared to the steel scenario, the hybrid composite variant has a lower life cycle cost (16%) and a lower environmental impact (26%). Though the full composite rail carriage may have the highest manufacturing cost, it results in the lowest total life cycle costs and lowest environmental impacts. Conclusions and recommendations This coupled cost and life cycle assessment showed that the full composite variant was the optimum solution. This case study showed that coupling of technical cost models with life cycle assessment offers an efficient route to accurately evaluate economic and environmental performance in a consistent way.

Meeting the needs of both present and future generations forms the foundation of sustainable development. Concern about food demand is increasing alongside the continuously growing population. In the pursuit of food security preventing food waste is one solution avoiding the negative environmental impacts that result from producing food unnecessarily. Packages offer one answer to preventing food waste, as they 1) preserve and protect food, 2) introduce the user to the correct way to handle and use the food and package and 3) allow the user to consume the food in its entirety. This thesis aims to enhance the sustainability of food packages by giving special emphasis to preventing food waste. The focus of this thesis is to assist the packaging designer in being able to take into account the requirements for the sustainability of food packages and to be able to integrate these requirements into the product development process. In addition, life cycle methods that can be used as a tool in the packaging design process or in assessing the sustainability of finished food-packaging combinations are evaluated. The methods of life cycle costing (LCC) and life cycle working environment (LCWE) are briefly discussed. The method of life cycle assessment (LCA) is examined more thoroughly through the lens of the literature review of food-package LCA case studies published in the 21st century in three relevant journals. Based on this review and on experiences learned from conducting LCAs, recommendations are given as to how the LCA practitioner should conduct a food packaging study to make most of the results. Two case studies are presented in this thesis. The first case study relates the results of a life cycle assessment conducted for three food items (cold cut (ham), sliced dark bread (rye) and Soygurt drink) and the alternative packaging options of each. Results of this study show that the packaging constitutes only 1–12 % of the total environmental impacts of the food-packaging combination. The greatest effect is derived from the food itself and the wasted food. Even just a small percentage of wasted food causes more environmental impacts than does the packaging. The second case study presents the results of LCC and LCWE analysis done for fruit and vegetable transport packages. In this thesis, the specific results of the study itself are not the focus, but rather the study methods and scope are analysed based on how these complement the sustainability assessment of food packages. This thesis presents reasons why prevention of food waste should be more thoroughly taken into account in food packaging design. In addition, the task of the packaging designer is facilitated by the requirements of sustainable food packaging, by the methods and step-by-step guidance on how to integrate sustainability issues into the design process, and by the recommendations on how to assess the sustainability of food packages. The intention of this thesis is to express the issues that are important in the field of the food packaging industry. Having recognised and implemented these issues, businesses can better manage the risks that could follow from neglecting these sustainability aspects.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli yhtenäistää Etelä-Karjalan alueen erilaisia tapoja toimia alueke-räyksen suhteen. Aluekeräyksellä tarkoitetaan jätteiden keräystä pisteiltä, joihin kotitaloudet, jotka eivät kuulu kiinteistökohtaiseen keräykseen, voivat tuoda syntypaikkalajitellun kuiva- eli sekajätteensä. Tavoitteena oli myös saada tietoa siitä, minkälaiset ovat eri kuivajätehuoltovaihtoehtojen ilmastonmuutos- ja kustannusvaikutukset. Lisäksi tavoitteena oli selvittää, miten ympäristönäkökohdat voidaan ottaa huomioon kuljetuskilpailutuksissa. Tutkimuksessa kerättiin tietoa internetistä, opinnäytetöistä ja tieteellisistä artikkeleista sekä yritysten edustajilta. Kasvihuonekaasupäästöjen laskennassa hyödynnettiin GaBi 6.0 -elinkaariarviointiohjelmaa. Tutkimuksen perusteella aluekeräyspisteet kannattaa sijoittaa reiteille, joita asukkaat käyttävät vähintään kerran viikossa ja mitkä ovat optimaalisesti myös kuljetusurakoitsijan kannalta. Taajama-alueelle ei nähty suositeltavaksi sijoittaa aluekeräyspisteitä. Suositeltavina astioina aluekeräyspisteille nähtiin syväkeräyssäiliöt, joiden tyhjennys onnistuu samalla keräyskalustolla kuin kiinteistöjen jäteastioiden, kun ajoneuvo on varustettu puominosturilla. Suositeltavaksi nähtiin myös harventaa jäteastioiden talvityhjennystiheyksiä, jos tyhjennystiheys on vakio ympäri vuoden, sillä pääosa aluekeräyspisteiden käyttäjistä on loma-asukkaita. Tyhjennystiheyksien harvennuksella olisi mahdollista saavuttaa kustannussäästöjä. Tutkimuksessa laskettiin kuivajätteen elinkaarenaikaisia kasvihuonekaasupäästöjä kuivajätteen keräyksestä loppusijoitukseen ja energiahyötykäyttöön. Energiahyötykäyttökohteiksi valittiin Riihimäen, Kotkan sekä Leppävirran (suunnitteilla) jätteenpolttolaitokset. Tulosten pohjalta kuivajätteen energiahyötykäyttö oli loppusijoitusta selkeästi parempi vaihtoehto. Kuivajätteen keräys- ja kuljetuspäästöjen vaikutus oli pieni. Kuivajätteen kuljetusmatkan pituus jätteenpolttolaitokselle ei ole siis ratkaisevassa roolissa kokonaiskasvihuonekaasupäästöjä tarkasteltaessa. Etäisyyttä suurempi vaikutus onkin kuivajätteen koostumuksella, polttolaitosten vuosihyötysuhteilla ja korvattavilla polttoaineilla. Jatkossa suositellaan selvittämään vielä vaihtoehtoisia käsittelytapoja kuivajätteen sisältämälle sekamuovijakeelle, jonka poltosta aiheutuu merkittävä osuus (noin 74 %) kuivajätteen polton kasvihuonekaasupäästöistä. Ajankohtaisia kuljetuskilpailutuksia varten tarkasteltiin vielä tarkemmin keräys- ja kuljetuspäästöjä. Tulosten pohjalta havaittiin, että keräys- ja kuljetuspäästöjä on mahdollista vähentää reilusti (46–74 %) siirtymällä dieselistä biopolttoaineiden käyttöön. Tuloksiin vaikuttaa kuitenkin merkittävästi, minkälaisista raaka-aineista biopolttoaineet on valmistettu. Kuivajätteen keräyspäästöjä on mahdollista pienentää myös päivittämällä aluekeräyspisteverkostoa. Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin kustannuksia aluekeräyspisteiden astioiden uusinnasta tai korjauksesta kuivajätteen loppusijoitukseen tai energiahyötykäyttöön asti. Merkittävimmät kustannukset aiheutuivat kuivajätteen loppusijoituksesta, energiahyötykäytöstä sekä keräyksestä. Kustannusten näkökulmasta keräyksen rooli oli siis suurempi. Työn lopussa annettiin vielä vinkkejä, joiden avulla jätehuoltoyritykset voivat tehdä jätekuljetushankintoja ympäristönäkökohdat huomioiden. Usein selkein tapa huomioida ympäristönäkökohdat kuljetuskilpailutuksissa on asettaa riittävän tiukkoja pakollisia vaatimuksia, jolloin voi valita hinnaltaan halvimman vaihtoehdon. Kuljetuspalvelun hankinnassa tulee huomioida ainakin energiankulutus, hiilidioksidi-, typenoksidi-, hiilivety- ja hiukkaspäästöt. Lainsäädäntö ei määrää vähimmäistasoja, vaan hankintaa tehdessä kannattaa kartoittaa markkinatilanne, jotta vaatimukset osaa asettaa oikealle tasolle. Markkinoille kannattaa myös tiedottaa tulevaisuuden tarpeista ja suunnitelmista. Suuria hankintakokonaisuuksia suositellaan pilkottavan pienempiin osiin, jotta pienet ja keskisuuret yritykset pystyvät myös osallistumaan tarjouskilpailuihin. Kannustus innovaatioiden huomioimiseen hankinnoissa on lisääntynyt myös jätehuollon alalla. Selvitettyjen kasvihuonekaasupäästöjen perusteella oli merkille pantavaa, miten suuri vaikutus polttolaitoksen valinnalla oli kasvihuonekaasupäästöihin. Oleellista onkin huomioida ympäristönäkökohdat myös energiahyötykäyttökohdetta valittaessa.

The present research aims to evaluate the usefulness of the application of Life Cycle Management in the agricultural sector focusing on the environmental and socio-economic aspects of decision making in the Colombian cocoa production. Such appraisal is based on the application of two methodological tools: Life Cycle Assessment, which considers environmental impacts throughout the life cycle of the cocoa production system, and Taguchi Loss Function, which measures the economic impact of a process' deviation from production targets. Results show that appropriate improvements in farming practices and supply consumption can enhance decision-making in the agricultural cocoa sector towards sustainability. In terms of agri-business purposes, such qualitative shift allows not only meeting consumer demands for environmentally friendly products, but also increasing the productivity and competitiveness of cocoa production, all of which has helped Life Cycle Management gain global acceptance. Since farmers have an important role in improving social and economic indicators at the national level, more attention should be paid to the upgrading of their cropping practices. Finally, one fundamental aspect of national cocoa production is the institutional and governmental support available for farmers in face of socio-economic or technological needs.

Representative Life-Cycle Inventories (LCIs) are essential for Life-Cycle Assessments (LCAs) quality and readiness. Because energy is such an important element of LCAs, appropriate LCIs on energy are crucial, and due to the prevalence of hydropower on Brazilian electricity mix, the frequently used LCIs are not representative of the Brazilian conditions. The present study developed a LCI of the Itaipu Hydropower Plant, the major hydropower plant in the world, responsible for producing 23.8% of Brazil's electricity consumption. Focused on the capital investments to construct and operate the dam, the LCI was designed to serve as a database for the LCAs of Brazilian hydroelectricity production. The life-cycle boundaries encompass the construction and operation of the dam, as well as the life-cycles of the most important material and energy consumptions (cement, steel, copper, diesel oil, lubricant oil), as well as construction site operation, emissions from reservoir flooding, material and workers transportation, and earthworks. As a result, besides the presented inventory, it was possible to determine the following processes, and respective environmental burdens as the most important life-cycle hotspots: reservoir filling (CO(2) and CH(4) emission: land use); steel life-cycle (water and energy consumption; CO, particulates, SO(x) and NO(x) emissions); cement life-cycle (water and energy consumption; CO(2) and particulate emissions); and operation of civil construction machines (diesel consumption; NO(x) emissions). Compared with another hydropower studies, the LCI showed magnitude adequacy, with better results than small hydropower, which reveals a scale economy for material and energy exchanges in the case of ltaipu Power Plant. The construction industry is one of the greatest sources of pollution because of the high level of energy consumption during its life cycle. In addition to using energy while constructing a building, several systems also use power while the building is operating, especially the air-conditioning system. Energy consumption for this system is related, among other issues, to external air temperature and the required internal temperature of the building. The facades are elements which present the highest level of ambient heat transfer from the outside to the inside of tall buildings. Thus, the type of facade has an influence on energy consumption during the building life cycle and, consequently, contributes to buildings' CO2 emissions, because these emissions are directly connected to energy consumption. Therefore, the aim is to help develop a methodology for evaluating CO2 emissions generated during the life cycle of office building facades. The results, based on the parameters used in this study, show that facades using structural glazing and uncolored glass emit the most CO2 throughout their life cycle, followed by brick facades covered with compound aluminum panels or ACM (Aluminum Composite Material), facades using structural glazing and reflective glass and brick facades with plaster coating. On the other hand, the typology of facade that emits less CO2 is brickwork and mortar because its thermal barrier is better than structural glazing facade and materials used to produce this facade are better than brickwork and ACM. The complexity of climate change and its evolution during the last few years has a positive impact on new developments and approaches to reduce the emissions of CO2. Looking for a methodology to evaluate the sustainability of a roadway, a tool has been developed. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is being accepted by the road industry to measure and evaluate the environmental impacts of an infrastructure, as the energy consumption and carbon footprint. This paper describes the methodology to calculate the CO2 emissions associated with the energy embodied on a roadway along its life cycle, including construction, operations and demolition. It will assist to find solutions to improve the energy footprint and reduce the amount of CO2 emissions. Details are provided of both, the methodology and the data acquisition. This paper is an application of the methodology to the Spanish highways, using a local database. Two case studies and a practical example are studied to show the model as a decision support for sustainable construction in the road industry.

In this work, we analyze the effect of incorporating life cycle inventory (LCI) uncertainty on the multi-objective optimization of chemical supply chains (SC) considering simultaneously their economic and environmental performance. To this end, we present a stochastic multi-scenario mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) coupled with a two-step transformation scenario generation algorithm with the unique feature of providing scenarios where the LCI random variables are correlated and each one of them has the desired lognormal marginal distribution. The environmental performance is quantified following life cycle assessment (LCA) principles, which are represented in the model formulation through standard algebraic equations. The capabilities of our approach are illustrated through a case study of a petrochemical supply chain. We show that the stochastic solution improves the economic performance of the SC in comparison with the deterministic one at any level of the environmental impact, and moreover the correlation among environmental burdens provides more realistic scenarios for the decision making process.

Lo scopo di questo studio è quello di valutare come sono variati gli impatti dell’impianto di compostaggio Romagna Compost a seguito dell’intervento di ampliamento e adeguamento, che ha portato ad un’evoluzione impiantistica notevole: dal processo di compostaggio tradizionale ad un sistema integrato anaerobico-aerobico. Per fare ciò si è scelto di utilizzare la metodologia di valutazione del ciclo di vita Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Il vantaggio di questa analisi, è quello di riuscire a considerare tutti gli aspetti del ciclo di vita dei diversi sotto-processi considerati, dal compostaggio vero e proprio, all’utilizzo di reagenti, combustibili e materiali ausiliari, dal trasporto e smaltimento dei flussi di rifiuti finali al recupero energetico. A tal proposito si è rivelata utile una ricerca bibliografica per individuare studi LCA applicati al campo d’interesse.Inoltre, è stato effettuato un riesame delle tecnologie utilizzate negli impianti di recupero dei rifiuti organici e del concetto di Best Available Techniques (BAT). Mediante l’analisi di inventario, è stato studiato in maniera approfondita l’impianto e le attività svolte al suo interno. Per quanto riguarda la valutazione degli impatti, eseguita con il metodo Recipe 2014, è stato preso in esame il periodo temporale dal 2007 al 2013, esaminando tutti gli anni di funzionamento. Nello specifico, ci si è posto l’obiettivo di valutare se e quanto l’introduzione del sistema di recupero energetico abbia portato ad un reale miglioramento del processo con una diminuzione complessiva degli impatti. Nella seconda fase dello studio, sono stati estesi i confini del sistema per valutare gli impatti associati al trasporto del rifiuto dal luogo di raccolta all’impianto Romagna Compost e alla diversa gestione dei rifiuti nell’ambito nazionale. La modellazione è stata effettuata con il programma di calcolo SimaPro e il database Ecoinvent, Infine, per convalidare i dati ottenuti è stato effettuata un’analisi di incertezza mediante il metodo Monte Carlo.

The evaluation of life cycle greenhouse gas emissions from power generation with carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a critical factor in energy and policy analysis. The current paper examines life cycle emissions from three types of fossil-fuel-based power plants, namely supercritical pulverized coal (super-PC), natural gas combined cycle (NGCC) and integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC), with and without CCS. Results show that, for a 90% CO2 capture efficiency, life cycle GHG emissions are reduced by 75-84% depending on what technology is used. With GHG emissions less than 170 g/kWh, IGCC technology is found to be favorable to NGCC with CCS. Sensitivity analysis reveals that, for coal power plants, varying the CO2 capture efficiency and the coal transport distance has a more pronounced effect on life cycle GHG emissions than changing the length of CO2 transport pipeline. Finally, it is concluded from the current study that while the global warming potential is reduced when MEA-based CO2 capture is employed, the increase in other air pollutants such as NOx and NH3 leads to higher eutrophication and acidification potentials.

Renewable hydrocarbon biofuels are being investigated as possible alternatives to conventional liquid transportation fossil fuels like gasoline, kerosene (aviation fuel), and diesel. A diverse range of biomass feedstocks such as corn stover, sugarcane bagasse, switchgrass, waste wood, and algae, are being evaluated as candidates for pyrolysis and catalytic upgrading to produce drop-in hydrocarbon fuels. This research has developed preliminary life cycle assessments (LCA) for each feedstock-specific pathway and compared the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the hydrocarbon biofuels to current fossil fuels. As a comprehensive study, this analysis attempts to account for all of the GHG emissions associated with each feedstock pathway through the entire life cycle. Emissions from all stages including feedstock production, land use change, pyrolysis, stabilizing the pyrolysis oil for transport and storage, and upgrading the stabilized pyrolysis oil to a hydrocarbon fuel are included. In addition to GHG emissions, the energy requirements and water use have been evaluated over the entire life cycle. The goal of this research is to help understand the relative advantages and disadvantages of the feedstocks and the resultant hydrocarbon biofuels based on three environmental indicators; GHG emissions, energy demand, and water utilization. Results indicate that liquid hydrocarbon biofuels produced through this pyrolysis-based pathway can achieve greenhouse gas emission savings of greater than 50% compared to petroleum fuels, thus potentially qualifying these biofuels under the US EPA RFS2 program. GHG emissions from biofuels ranged from 10.7-74.3 g/MJ from biofuels derived from sugarcane bagasse and wild algae at the extremes of this range, respectively. The cumulative energy demand (CED) shows that energy in every biofuel process is primarily from renewable biomass and the remaining energy demand is mostly from fossil fuels. The CED for biofuel range from 1.25-3.25 MJ/MJ from biofuels derived from sugarcane bagasse to wild algae respectively, while the other feedstock-derived biofuels are around 2 MJ/MJ. Water utilization is primarily from cooling water use during the pyrolysis stage if irrigation is not used during the feedstock production stage. Water use ranges from 1.7 - 17.2 gallons of water per kg of biofuel from sugarcane bagasse to open pond algae, respectively.

Biofuels are an increasingly important component of worldwide energy supply. This research aims to understand the pathways and impacts of biofuels production, and to improve these processes to make them more efficient. In Chapter 2, a life cycle assessment (LCA) is presented for cellulosic ethanol production from five potential feedstocks of regional importance to the upper Midwest - hybrid poplar, hybrid willow, switchgrass, diverse prairie grasses, and logging residues - according to the requirements of Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). Direct land use change emissions are included for the conversion of abandoned agricultural land to feedstock production, and computer models of the conversion process are used in order to determine the effect of varying biomass composition on overall life cycle impacts. All scenarios analyzed here result in greater than 60% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions relative to petroleum gasoline. Land use change effects were found to contribute significantly to the overall emissions for the first 20 years after plantation establishment. Chapter 3 is an investigation of the effects of biomass mixtures on overall sugar recovery from the combined processes of dilute acid pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis. Biomass mixtures studied were aspen, a hardwood species well suited to biochemical processing; balsam, a high-lignin softwood species, and switchgrass, an herbaceous energy crop with high ash content. A matrix of three different dilute acid pretreatment severities and three different enzyme loading levels was used to characterize interactions between pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis. Maximum glucose yield for any species was 70% oftheoretical for switchgrass, and maximum xylose yield was 99.7% of theoretical for aspen. Supplemental β-glucosidase increased glucose yield from enzymatic hydrolysis by an average of 15%, and total sugar recoveries for mixtures could be predicted to within 4% by linear interpolation of the pure species results. Chapter 4 is an evaluation of the potential for producing Trichoderma reesei cellulose hydrolases in the Kluyveromyces lactis yeast expression system. The exoglucanases Cel6A and Cel7A, and the endoglucanase Cel7B were inserted separately into the K. lactis and the enzymes were analyzed for activity on various substrates. Recombinant Cel7B was found to be active on carboxymethyl cellulose and Avicel powdered cellulose substrates. Recombinant Cel6A was also found to be active on Avicel. Recombinant Cel7A was produced, but no enzymatic activity was detected on any substrate. Chapter 5 presents a new method for enzyme improvement studies using enzyme co-expression and yeast growth rate measurements as a potential high-throughput expression and screening system in K. lactis yeast. Two different K. lactis strains were evaluated for their usefulness in growth screening studies, one wild-type strain and one strain which has had the main galactose metabolic pathway disabled. Sequential transformation and co-expression of the exoglucanase Cel6A and endoglucanase Cel7B was performed, and improved hydrolysis rates on Avicel were detectable in the cell culture supernatant. Future work should focus on hydrolysis of natural substrates, developing the growth screening method, and utilizing the K. lactis expression system for directed evolution of enzymes.

During the PhD program in chemistry at the University of Bologna, the environmental sustainability of some industrial processes was studied through the application of the LCA methodology. The efforts were focused on the study of processes under development, in order to assess their environmental impacts to guide their transfer on an industrial scale. Processes that could meet the principles of Green Chemistry have been selected and their environmental benefits have been evaluated through a holistic approach. The use of renewable sources was assessed through the study of terephthalic acid production from biomass (which showed that only the use of waste can provide an environmental benefit) and a new process for biogas upgrading (whose potential is to act as a carbon capture technology). Furthermore, the basis for the development of a new methodology for the prediction of the environmental impact of ionic liquids has been laid. It has already shown good qualities in identifying impact trends, but further research on it is needed to obtain a more reliable and usable model. In the context of sustainable development that will not only be sector-specific, the environmental performance of some processes linked to the primary production sector has also been evaluated. The impacts of some organic farming practices in the wine production were analysed, the use of the Cereal Unit parameter was proposed as a functional unit for the comparison of different crop rotations, and the carbon footprint of school canteen meals was calculated. The results of the analyses confirm that sustainability in the industrial production sector should be assessed from a life cycle perspective, in order to consider all the flows involved during the different phases. In particular, it is necessary that environmental assessments adopt a cradle-to-gate approach, to avoid shifting the environmental burden from one phase to another.
