The biocompatibility of commercially pure (cp) titanium stems from its chemical stability within an organism, due to a fine film of impermeable titanium oxide covering the metal surface, which guarantees its resistance to corrosion. Despite its biocompatible characteristic, this material does not promote the formation of a hydroxyapatite layer, therefore, many research groups have sought to alter the material`s surface, introducing modifications that might influence corrosion resistance. The electrochemical behavior of cp Ti, with hydroxyapatite coating and without hydroxyapatite coating, commonly used in implant materials, was investigated using an artificial saliva solution at 25 degrees C and pH=7.4. In the conditions of the study it was observed that the hydroxyapatite layer influences the properties of corrosion resistance. This study of the behavior of cp Ti with and without hydroxyapatite coating, in naturally aerated artificial saliva solution at 25 degrees C, was based on open circuit potential measurements and potentiodynamic polarization curves. At approximately 1x10(-6) A/cm(2) the potential for cp Ti with and without hydroxyapatite coating begins to increase at a faster rate, but at -74mV (SCE) for coated cp Ti and at 180mV (SCE) for uncoated cp Ti the increase in potential begins to slow. This behavior, characterized by a partial stabilization of current density, indicates that in those potential ranges a protective passive film is formed.

The present work describes the synthesis of platinum nanoparticles followed by their electrophoretic deposition onto transparent fluorine-doped tin oxide electrodes. The nano-Pt-modified electrodes were characterized by voltammetric studies in acidic solutions showing a great electrocatalytic behavior towards H(+) reduction being very interesting for fuel cell applications. Morphological characterization was performed by atomic force microscopy on different modified electrodes showing a very rough surface which can be tuned by means of time of deposition. Also, nickel hydroxide thin films were galvanostatically grown onto these electrodes showing an interesting electrochemical behavior as sharper peaks, indicating a faster ionic exchange from the electrolyte to the film.

The electrochemical behavior of ISO 5832-9 stainless steel at 37 degrees C in 0.9% NaCl, Ringer Lactate and minimum essential medium (MEM) has been studied, using linear voltammetry, and surface analysis by SEM and EDS. Mechanical and toxicity tests were made. ISO 5832-9 is passivated at corrosion potential (E) and it does not present pitting corrosion on the media studied from to 50 in V above the transpassivation potential (Ei). SEM and EDS analysis have shown that the sample previously immersed in MEM presents a diffirent behavior at 50 in V above El: the manganese oxide inclusions are absent in the surface. E. values and passivation current density values j(pass) changed according to the following. E(corr, RL) < E(corr,NaCl) < E(corr, MEM) and J (MEM) << j(RL) congruent to j(NaCl) The stainless steel was characterized as non toxic in the cytotoxicity assay

The present paper describes the physical-chemical characterization and electrochemical behavior of a new nanomaterial formed by the addition of cadmium and cobalt atoms into the structure of nickel hydroxide nanoparticles, these ones synthesized by an easy sonochemical method. Particles of about 5 nm diameter were obtained and characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Different nickel hydroxide nanoparticles were immobilized onto transparent conducting substrates by using electrostatic layer-by-layer providing thin films at the nanoscale and the electrochemical behavior was investigated. The formation of a mixed hydroxide was corroborated by observation of very interesting properties as redox potential shifting to less positive potentials and high stability when submitted to long electrochemical cycling or high times of ultrasonic synthesis, suggesting practical applications. An amperometric oxygen sensor based on a polymeric nickel-salen (salen = N,N'-ethylene bis(salicylideneiminato)) film coated platinum electrode was developed. The sensor was constructed by electropolymerization of nickel-salen complex at platinum electrode in acetonitrile/tetrabutylammonium perchlorate by cyclic voltammetry. The voltammetric behavior of the sensor was investigated in 0.5 mol L-1 KCl solution in the absence and presence of molecular oxygen. Thus, with the addition of oxygen to the solution, the increase of cathodic peak current (at -0.25 V vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE)) of the modified electrode was observed. This result shows that the nickel-salen film on electrode surface promotes the reduction of oxygen. The reaction can be brought about electrochemically, where the nickel(II) complex is first reduced to a nickel(I) complex at the electrode surface. The nickel(I) complex then undergoes a catalytic oxidation by the molecular oxygen in solution back to the nickel(II) complex, which can then be electrochemically re-reduced to produce an enhancement of the cathodic current. The Tafel plot analyses have been used to elucidate the kinetics and mechanism of the oxygen reduction. A plot of the cathodic current vs. the dissolved oxygen concentration for chronoamperometry (fixed potential = -0.25 V vs. SCE) at the sensor was linear in the 3.95-9.20 mg L-1 concentration range and the concentration limit was 0.17 mg L-1 O-2. The proposed electrode is useful for the quality control and routine analysis of dissolved oxygen in commercial samples and environmental water. The results obtained for the levels of dissolved oxygen are in agreement with the results obtained with a commercial O-2 sensor. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

LiCoO2 powders were prepared by combustion synthesis, using metallic nitrates as the oxidant and metal sources and urea as fuel. A small amount of the LiCoO2 phase was obtained directly from the combustion reaction, however, a heat treatment was necessary for the phase crystallization. The heat treatment was performed at the temperature range from 400 up to 700 degreesC for 12 h. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and specific surface area values were obtained by BET isotherms. Composite electrodes were prepared using a mixture of LiCoO2, carbon black and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) in the 85:10:5% w/w ratio. The electrochemical behavior of these composites was evaluated in ethylene carbonate/dimethylcarbonate solution, using lithium perchlorate as supporting electrolyte. Cyclic voltammograms showed one reversible redox process at 4.0/3.85 V and one irreversible redox process at 3.3 V for the LiCoO2 obtained after a post-heat treatment at 400 and 500 degreesC.Raman spectroscopy showed the possible presence of LiCoO2 with cubic structure for the material obtained at 400 and 500 degreesC. This result is in agreement with X-ray data with structural refinement for the LiCoO2 powders obtained at different temperatures using the Rietveld method. Data from this method showed the coexistence of cubic LiCoO2 (spinel) and rhombohedral (layered) structures when LiCoO2 was obtained at lower temperatures (400 and 500 degreesC). The single rhombohedral structure for LiCoO2 was obtained after post-heat treatment at 600 degreesC. The maximum energy capacity in the first discharge was 136 mA g(-1) for the composite electrode based on LiCoO2 obtained after heat treatment at 700 degreesC. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. The electrochemical behavior in 0.5 M H2SO4 at 25 degreesC of a Cu-Al(9.3 wt%)-Ag(4.7 wt%) alloy submitted to different heat treatments and an annealed Cu- Al(9.7 wt%)-Ag(34.2 wt%) were studied by means of open circuit potential (E-mix) measurements, potentiodynamic polarizations and cyclic voltammetry. SEM and EDX microanalysis were used to examine the changes caused by the electrochemical perturbations. The steady state potentials observed for the studied samples were correlated in terms of the phases present in the alloys surface. The resulting E/I potentiodynamic profiles were explained in terms of the potentiodynamic behavior of pure copper and pure silver. The presence of aluminum decreased the extent of copper oxidation. In the apparent Tafel potential region, two anodic Tafel slopes were obtained: 40 mV dec(-1) in the low potential region and 130 mV dec(-1) in the high potential region, which were related with the electrochemical processes involving copper oxidation. The influence of heat-treatments on the electrochemical behavior of thermal spray Cr3C2-NiCr coatings prepared by high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) was studied in NaCl solution, at 25 degrees C, using open-circuit potential (E-OC) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. Coating characterization were performed before and after the heat-treatments and electrochemical tests by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Auger electron spectroscopy. In addition to the changes in the original powder composition occurring during HVOF process, heat-treatment performed at 450 degrees C caused no significant changes in electrochemical response compared with untreated sample, and at 760 degrees C the main difference was the formation of a thin and defective layer of Cr2O3 at the coating surface, which increased the total impedance at the first day of immersion. Higher influence on the electrochemical was noted for samples treated at 880 degrees C, which also showed higher E-OC and total impedance, and lower corrosion current. This behavior was interpreted considering the formation of a chromium oxide layer on the coating surface, dissolution and decomposition of smaller carbide particles and their surface enrichment with Cr due to C diffusion and dissolution into the matrix, and possible Ni, Cr, and Fe diffusion to coating/substrate interface. The growth of zinc hexacyanoferrate (ZnHCF) hybrid film on the surface of graphite-epoxy composite (GEC) electrodes was demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry. Surface morphology of the hybrid film was investigated by using scanning electron microscopy. The effect of the type of monovalent cations on the redox behaviour of hybrid film was also studied. This effect indicated that the radius of the hydrated cation mainly determines the ion permeability of the film. The electrochemical behavior of the substituted anilines (procaine and sulfamerazine) in 1 M KCl of the modified GEC electrode showed a decrease of the cathodic currents while increasing the concentration of these analytes. The developed sensor also showed excellent stability for long time usage, higher sensitivity and cost-effective fabrication.

The electrochemical behavior of SnO2-SbOx, based electrodes, with and without the addition of RuO2, was studied by cyclic voltammetry, service life measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 0.5 M H2SO4 the physical characteristics of these materials were investigated using SEM, EDX and XRD. The resulting cyclic voltammograms obtained using SnO2-SbOx, and SnO2-SbOx-RuO2(x), x = 30, 5, 1 and 0.4 % showed that the OER overpotential decreased with the addition of RuO2. In the repetitive triangular potential voltammetry applied to the SnO2 electrode without and with RuO2 (1%), a higher anodic current is observed during the first potential scan; it is explained in terms of the oxidation of the Ti substrate. The addition of 1% RuO2 increased the service life from 8 to 20 hours at 10 mAcm(-2), while at 50 mAcm(-2) this increase was from 1 to 8 hours. AC Impedance diagrams obtained for the Ti/SnO2-SbOx and Ti/SnO2-SbOx-RuO2 electrodes at the rest potential and at a potential in the OER region can be explained by a single equivalent circuit containing two elements in series. The results showed that the charge transfer resistance and the resistance of the oxide film are lower in the oxide film containing RuO2. Surface analysis of Ti/SnO2-SbOx, revealed that it is relatively porous and formed by clusters of small particles. The Ti/SnO2-SbOx-RuO2 (1%) film is more compact, though. XRD analysis showed that a Sn1-xTixO2 oxide is formed on the Ti/SnO2-SbOx with 1% and without RuO2 electrodes.
