In this paper we present results about the functioning of a multilayered a-SiC:H heterostructure as a device for wavelength-division demultiplexing of optical signals. The device is composed of two stacked p-i-n photodiodes, both optimized for the selective collection of photogenerated carriers. Band gap engineering was used to adjust the photogeneration and recombination rates profiles of the intrinsic absorber regions of each photodiode to short and long wavelength absorption and carrier collection in the visible spectrum. The photocurrent signal using different input optical channels was analyzed at reverse and forward bias and under steady state illumination. This photocurrent is used as an input for a demux algorithm based on the voltage controlled sensitivity of the device. The device functioning is explained with results obtained by numerical simulation of the device, which permit an insight to the internal electric configuration of the double heterojunction. These results address the explanation of the device functioning in the frequency domain to a wavelength tunable photocapacitance due to the accumulation of space charge localized at the internal junction. The existence of a direct relation between the experimentally observed capacitive effects of the double diode and the quality of the semiconductor materials used to form the internal junction is highlighted.

Although the Navigation Satellite Timing and Ranging (NAVSTAR) Global Positioning System (GPS) is, de facto, the standard positioning system used in outdoor navigation, it does not provide, per se, all the features required to perform many outdoor navigational tasks. The accuracy of the GPS measurements is the most critical issue. The quest for higher position readings accuracy led to the development, in the late nineties, of the Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS). The differential GPS method detects the range errors of the GPS satellites received and broadcasts them. The DGPS/GPS receivers correlate the DGPS data with the GPS satellite data they are receiving, granting users increased accuracy. DGPS data is broadcasted using terrestrial radio beacons, satellites and, more recently, the Internet. Our goal is to have access, within the ISEP campus, to DGPS correction data. To achieve this objective we designed and implemented a distributed system composed of two main modules which are interconnected: a distributed application responsible for the establishment of the data link over the Internet between the remote DGPS stations and the campus, and the campus-wide DGPS data server application. The DGPS data Internet link is provided by a two-tier client/server distributed application where the server-side is connected to the DGPS station and the client-side is located at the campus. The second unit, the campus DGPS data server application, diffuses DGPS data received at the campus via the Intranet and via a wireless data link. The wireless broadcast is intended for DGPS/GPS portable receivers equipped with an air interface and the Intranet link is provided for DGPS/GPS receivers with just a RS232 DGPS data interface. While the DGPS data Internet link servers receive the DGPS data from the DGPS base stations and forward it to the DGPS data Internet link client, the DGPS data Internet link client outputs the received DGPS data to the campus DGPS data server application. The distributed system is expected to provide adequate support for accurate (sub-metric) outdoor campus navigation tasks. This paper describes in detail the overall distributed application.

Health Minister Edwin Poots today marked the roll-out of a ground-breaking hi-tech scheme which will enable more patients to monitor their health in their own homes. Following funding of £18m from the Department of Health, the newly named Centre for Connected Health and Social Care (CCHSC), part of the Public Health Agency, worked in partnership with business consortium TF3to establish the innovative Telemonitoring NI service. The service is now being delivered by the TF3 consortium in partnership with the Health and Social Care Trusts.Remote telemonitoring combines technology and services that enable patients with chronic diseases to test their vital signs such as pulse, blood pressure, body weight, temperature, blood glucose and oxygen levels at home on a daily basis. The service will now be rolled out to 3,500 patients across Northern Ireland per annum for a period of six years.Mr Poots today visited the home of Larne pensioner Michael Howard who has Chronic Pulmonary Obstructive Disorder (COPD) to hear how Telemonitoring NI has changed his life.During the visit Mr Poots said: "Chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and COPD affect around three quarters of people over the age of 75. This is the generation from whom transport and mobility pose the biggest problems. The Telemonitoring NI service will allow thousands to monitor their vital signs without having to leave their own homes."It means that patients are able to understand and manage their condition better. Many say it has improved their confidence and given them peace of mind. With a health professional monitoring each patient's health on a daily basis, there is less need for hospital admission. Carers are also better informed with the pro-active support provided. It means earlier intervention in, and the prevention of, deterioration of condition, acute illness and hospital admissions."Telemonitoring NI is an excellent example of how the Health Service can innovateusing modern technology to deliver a better service for our patients."Eddie Ritson, Programme Director of CCHSC, PHA, said: "The roll-out of Telemonitoring NI represents a significant step towards providing quality care for the growing number of people with heart disease, stroke, some respiratory conditions and diabetes who want to live at home while having their conditions safely managed."This new service will give people more information which combined with timely advice will enable patients to gain more control over their health while supporting them to live independently in their own homes for longer."A patient will take their vital sign measurements at home, usually on a daily basis. and these will automatically be transmited to the Tf3 system. The resulting readings are monitored centrally by a healthcare professional working in the Tf3 triage team. If the patient's readings show signs of deterioration to an unacceptable level, they will be contacted by phone by a nurse working in a central team and if appropriate a healthcare professional in the patient's local Trust will be alerted to enable them to take appropriate action."Families and carers will also benefit from the reassurance that chronic health conditions are being closely monitored on an ongoing basis. The information collected through the service can also be used by doctors, nurses and patients in making decisions on how individual cases should be managed. "Using the service, Mr Howard, 71, who has emphysema - a long-term, progressive disease of the lungs that primarily causes shortness of breath - monitors his vital signs using the new technology every weekday morning. The information is monitored centrally and if readings show signs of deterioration to an unacceptable level, Mr Howard's local healthcare professional is alerted."Taking my readings is such a simple process but one that gives me huge benefits as it is an early warning system to me and also for the specialist nurses in charge of my care. Without the remote telemonitoring I would be running back and forward to the GPs' surgery all the time to have things checked out," he explained."Having my signs monitored by a nurse means any changes in my condition are dealt with immediately and this has prevented me from being admitted to hospital - in the past I've had to spend six days in hospital any time I'm admitted with a chest infection."The telemonitoring is not only reassuring for me, it also gives me more control over managing my own condition and as a result I have less upheaval in my life, and I'm less of a cost to the health care system. Most importantly, it gives me peace of mind and one less thing to worry about at my age."Patients seeking further information about the new telemonitoring service should contact their healthcare professional.

This paper deals with the design of nonregenerativerelaying transceivers in cooperative systems where channel stateinformation (CSI) is available at the relay station. The conventionalnonregenerative approach is the amplify and forward(A&F) approach, where the signal received at the relay is simplyamplified and retransmitted. In this paper, we propose an alternativelinear transceiver design for nonregenerative relaying(including pure relaying and the cooperative transmission cases),making proper use of CSI at the relay station. Specifically, wedesign the optimum linear filtering performed on the data to beforwarded at the relay. As optimization criteria, we have consideredthe maximization of mutual information (that provides aninformation rate for which reliable communication is possible) fora given available transmission power at the relay station. Threedifferent levels of CSI can be considered at the relay station: onlyfirst hop channel information (between the source and relay);first hop channel and second hop channel (between relay anddestination) information, or a third situation where the relaymay have complete cooperative channel information includingall the links: first and second hop channels and also the directchannel between source and destination. Despite the latter beinga more unrealistic situation, since it requires the destination toinform the relay station about the direct channel, it is useful as anupper benchmark. In this paper, we consider the last two casesrelating to CSI.We compare the performance so obtained with theperformance for the conventional A&F approach, and also withthe performance of regenerative relays and direct noncooperativetransmission for two particular cases: narrowband multiple-inputmultiple-output transceivers and wideband single input singleoutput orthogonal frequency division multiplex transmissions.

Vaatimusmäärittely on tärkeä osa ohjelmistotuotantoa. Vaatimusten jäljitettävyys on osa vaatimustenhallinta prosessia. Suurin parannusehdotus prosessimalliin on jäljitettävyysmatriisien luominen.

The endodermis is a highly conserved cell layer present in the root of all vascular plants, except Lycophytes. This tissue layer establishes a protective diffusion barrier surrounding the vasculature and is expected to prevent passive, uncontrolled flow of nutrients through the root. This barrier property is achieved by the production of Casparian strips (CS), a localized cell wall impregnation of lignin in the anticlinal walls of each endodermal cell, forming a belt-like structure sealing the extracellular space. The CS act as a selective barrier between the external cell layers and the vascular cylinder and are thought to be important in many aspects of root function. For instance, selective nutrient uptake and sequestration from the soil, resistance to different abiotic and biotic stresses are expected to involve functional CS. Although discovered 150 years ago, nothing was known about the genes involved in CS establishment until recently. The use of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana together with both reverse and forward genetic approaches led to the discovery of an increasing number of genes involved in different steps of CS formation during the last few years. One of these genes encodes SCHENGEN3 (SGN3), a leucine-rich repeat receptor-like kinase (LRR-RLK). SGN3 was discovered first by reverse genetic due to its endodermis-enriched expression, and the corresponding mutant displays strong endodermal permeability of the apoplastic tracer Propidium Iodide (PI) indicative of defective CS. One aim of this thesis is to study the role of SGN3 at the molecular level in order to understand its involvement in establishing an impermeable CS. The endodermal permeability of sgn3 is shown to be the result of incorrect localization of key proteins involved in CS establishment (the "Casparian strip domain proteins", CASPs), leading to non-functional CS interrupted by discontinuities. CASPs localize in the plasma membrane domain subjacent to the CS, named the Casparian Strip membrane Domain (CSD). The CSD discontinuities in sgn3 together with SGN3 localization in close proximity to the CASPs lead to the assumption that SGN3 is involved in the formation of a continuous CSD. In addition, SGN3 might have a second role, acting as a kinase reporting CSD integrity leading to lignin and suberin production in CSD/CS defective plants. Up to now, sgn3 is the strongest and most specific CS mutant available, displaying tracer penetration along the whole length of the seedling root. For this reason, this mutant is well suited in order to characterize the physiological behaviour of CS affected plants. Due to the lack of such mutants in the past, it was not possible to test the presumed functions of CS by using plants lacking this structure. We decided to use sgn3 for this purpose. Surprisingly, sgn3 overall growth is only slightly affected. Nevertheless, processes expected to rely on functional CS, such as water transport through the root, nutrient homeostasis, salt tolerance and resistance to an excess of some nutrients are altered in this mutant. On the other hand, homeostasis for most elements and drought tolerance are not affected in sgn3. It is surprising to observe that homeostatic defects are specific, with a decrease in potassium and an increase in magnesium levels. It indicates a backup system, set up by the plant in order to counteract free diffusion of nutrients into the stele. For instance, potassium shortage in sgn3 upregulates the transcription of potassium influx transport proteins and genes known to be induced by potassium starvation. Moreover, sgn3 mutant is hypersensitive to low potassium conditions. Hopefully, these results about SGN3 will help our understanding of CS establishment at the molecular level. In addition, physiological experiments using sgn3 should give us a framework for future experiments and help us to understand the different roles of CS and their involvement during nutrient radial transport through the root.

Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää eurosijoittajan näkökulmasta tehokkain strategia kansainvälisen osakeportfolion valuuttariskin suojaamiseen. Tutkimuksen aikaväli on 31.12.2004 - 31.12.2010. Tutkimuksessa päädyttiin suosittamaan 50 % valuuttariskin suojausastetta eurosijoittajan näkökulmasta. Kyseinen strategia alensi parhaiten kansainvälisen sijoittajan portfolion riskiä tutkitulla aikavälillä, eikä strategia myöskään heikentänyt merkittävästi portfolion tuottoa. Absoluuttisella kumulatiivisella tuotolla mitattuna suojaamaton osakeportfolio oli tutkimuksen aikavälillä paras, johtuen pääosin vuoden 2010 eurokriisistä, jonka vuoksi euro heikentyi voimakkaasti muita valuuttoja vastaan.

This thesis examines the suitability of VaR in foreign exchange rate risk management from the perspective of a European investor. The suitability of four different VaR models is evaluated in respect to have insight if VaR is a valuable tool in managing foreign exchange rate risk. The models evaluated are historical method, historical bootstrap method, variance-covariance method and Monte Carlo simulation. The data evaluated are divided into emerging and developed market currencies to have more intriguing analysis. The foreign exchange rate data in this thesis is from 31st January 2000 to 30th April 2014. The results show that the previously mentioned VaR models performance in foreign exchange risk management is not to be considered as a single tool in foreign exchange rate risk management. The variance-covariance method and Monte Carlo simulation performs poorest in both currency portfolios. Both historical methods performed better but should also be considered as an additional tool along with other more sophisticated analysis tools. A comparative study of VaR estimates and forward prices is also included in the thesis. The study reveals that regardless of the expensive hedging cost of emerging market currencies the risk captured by VaR is more expensive and thus FX forward hedging is recommended

Ant colonies in nature provide a good model for a distributed, robust and adaptive routing algorithm. This paper proposes the adoption of the same strategy for the routing of packets in an Active Network. Traditional store-and-forward routers are replaced by active intermediate systems, which are able to perform computations on transient packets, in a way that results very helpful for developing and dynamically deploying new protocols. The adoption of the Active Networks paradigm associated with a cooperative learning environment produces a robust, decentralized routing algorithm capable of adapting to network traffic conditions.
