The use of liposomes to encapsulate materials has received widespread attention for drug delivery, transfection, diagnostic reagent, and as immunoadjuvants. Phospholipid polymers form a new class of biomaterials with many potential applications in medicine and research. Of interest are polymeric phospholipids containing a diacetylene moiety along their acyl chain since these kinds of lipids can be polymerized by Ultra-Violet (UV) irradiation to form chains of covalently linked lipids in the bilayer. In particular the diacetylenic phosphatidylcholine 1,2-bis(10,12-tricosadiynoyl)- sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DC8,9PC) can form intermolecular cross-linking through the diacetylenic group to produce a conjugated polymer within the hydrocarbon region of the bilayer. As knowledge of liposome structures is certainly fundamental for system design improvement for new and better applications, this work focuses on the structural properties of polymerized DC8,9PC:1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phusphocholine (DMPC) liposomes. Liposomes containing mixtures of DC8,9PC and DMPC, at different molar ratios, and exposed to different polymerization cycles, were studied through the analysis of the electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of a spin label incorporated into the bilayer, and the calorimetric data obtained from differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies. Upon irradiation, if all lipids had been polymerized, no gel-fluid transition would be expected. However, even samples that went through 20 cycles of UV irradiation presented a DSC band, showing that around 80% of the DC8,9PC molecules were not polymerized. Both DSC and ESR indicated that the two different lipids scarcely mix at low temperatures, however few molecules of DMPC are present in DC8,9PC rich domains and vice versa. UV irradiation was found to affect the gel fluid transition of both DMPC and DC8,9PC rich regions, indicating the presence of polymeric units of DC8,9PC in both areas, A model explaining lipids rearrangement is proposed for this partially polymerized system.

We report a new procedure to convert the polymer precursor poly(xylylidene tetrahydrothiophenium chloride) (PTHT) into poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) using microwave irradiation. Spin-coated PTHT films were irradiated at room temperature under ambient conditions in a commercial microwave oven, with varying power from 20W to 100W. Complete conversion was reached within only 5 min of irradiation for powers above 50W, yielding PPV films with absorption and photoluminescence spectra that are practically indistinguishable from the spectra of thermally converted PPV films, which require ca. 2 h of a high temperature (similar to 200 degrees C) thermal treatment. In addition to a much faster conversion procedure, the irradiation with microwaves led to a red shift in the absorption spectrum of a PTHT film, which varied linearly with the time of irradiation. These films can then be used as low-cost, easy-to-use detectors of microwaves. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the present work, the surface of the Eu-BTC = [Eu(EMA)(H(2)O)(2)], [Eu(TLA)(H(2)O)(4)] and [Eu(TMA)(H(2)O)(6)] complexes (EMA = 1,2,3-benzenetricarboxylate, TLA = 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylate and TMA = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) was modified using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) by a new microwave assisted method that proved to be simple and efficient. According to our observations, the most efficient luminescence is the material based on APTES incorporating [Eu(TMA)(H(2)O)(6)] complexes, denoted as Eu-TMA-Si, shows the highest emission efficiency. Therefore, it is proposed as a promising material for molecular conjugation in clinical diagnosis. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The large use of plastics in the world generates a large amount of waste which persists around 200 years in the environment. To minimize this effect is important to search some new polymer materials: the blends of biodegradable polymers with synthetic polymers. It is a large area that needs an Intensive research to investigate the blends properties and its behavior face to the different treatments to aim at the blodegradation. The blends used In this work are: some blodegradable polymers such as: poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(s-polycaprolactone) (PCL) with a synthetic polymer, polypropylene (PP), in lower concentration. These blends were prepared using an internal mixer (Torque Rheometer), and pressed. These films were submitted to fungus biotreatment. The films analyses will be carried out by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), UV-Vis absorption (UV-Vis), Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM), DSC and TGA. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Fluorene-based polymers are widely known materials due to a combination of features such as photoluminescence and electroluminescence, oxidative stability, and film-forming ability. However, studies reporting nonlinear optical properties in this class of conjugated polymer are scarce. Here, we report a new class of polyfluorene derivatives poly(9,9'-n-dihexyl-2,7-fluorenedilvinylene-alt-1,4-phenylenevinylene), poly(9,9'-n-dihexyl-2,7-fluorenedilvinylene-alt-2,5-thiophene), and poly[(9,9-di-hexylfluorenediylvinylene-alt-1,4-phenylenevinylene)-co-((9,9'-(3-t-butylpropanoate) fluorene-1,4-phenylene)] displaying high two-photon absorption (2PA) in the spectral range from a 490 to 1100 nm. The 2PA cross-section peak values for these materials are as high as 3000 Goppert Mayer (1 GM = 1 x 10-50 cm4 s/photon), which is related to the high degree of conjugation along the polymer backbone. The polymers that were used in this study presented a strong two-photon luminescence and also displayed optical limiting behavior, which, in combination with their well-established properties, make them highly suitable for nonlinear optical devices. Frequency-dependent electroluminescence and electric current response spectroscopy were applied to polymeric light-emitting electrochemical cells in order to obtain information about the operation mechanism regimes of such devices. Three clearly distinct frequency regimes could be identified: a dielectric regime at high frequencies; an ionic transport regime, characterized by ionic drift and electronic diffusion; and an electrolytic regime, characterized by electronic injection from the electrodes and electrochemical doping of the conjugated polymer. From the analysis of the results, it was possible to evaluate parameters like the diffusion speed of electronic charge carriers in the active layer and the voltage drop necessary for operation. The development of polymer-based photovoltaic devices brings the promise of low-cost and lightweight solar energy conversion systems. This technology requires new materials and device architectures with enhanced efficiency and lifetime, which depends on the understanding of charge-transport mechanisms. Organic films combined with electronegative nanoparticles may form systems with efficient dissociation of the photogenerated excitons, thus increasing the number of carriers to be collected by the electrodes. In this paper we investigate the steady-state photoconductive action spectra of devices formed by a bilayer of regio-regular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (RRP3HT) and TiO2 sandwiched between ITO and aluminum electrodes (ITO/TiO2:RRP3HT/Al). Photocurrents were measured for distinct bias voltages with illumination from either side of the device. Heterojunction structures were prepared by spin coating a RRP3HT film on an already deposited TiO2 layer on ITO. Symbatic and antibatic curves were obtained and a model for photocurrent action spectra was able to fit the symbatic responses. The quantum yield increased with the electric field, indicating that exciton dissociation is a field-assisted process as in an Onsager mechanism. Furthermore, the quantum yield was significantly higher when illumination was carried out through the ITO electrode onto which the TiO2 layer was deposited, as the highly electronegative TiO2 nanoparticles were efficient in exciton dissociation.

Plastic solar cells bear the potential for large-scale power generation based on flexible, lightweight, inexpensive materials. Since the discovery of the photo-induced electron transfer from a conjugated polymer (electron-donor) to fullerene or its derivatives molecules (electron-acceptors), followed by the introduction of the bulk heterojunction concept which means donors and acceptors blended together to realize the fotoactive layer, materials and deposition techniques have been extensively studied. In this work, electrochemical-deposition methods of polymeric conductive films were studied in order to realize bulk heterojunction solar cells. Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) glass electrodes modified with a thin layer of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) were electrochemically prepared under potentiodynamic and potentiostatic conditions; then those techniques were applied for the electrochemical co-deposition of donor and acceptor on modified ITO electrode to produce the active layer (blend). For the deposition of the electron-donor polymer the electropolymerization of many functionalized thiophene monomers was investigated while, as regards acceptors, fullerene was used first, then the study was focused on its derivative PCBM ([6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester). The polymeric films obtained (PEDOT and blend) were electrochemically and spectrophotometrically characterized and the film thicknesses were evaluated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Finally, to check the performances and the efficiency of the realized solar cells, tests were carried out under standard conditions. Nowadays bulk heterojunction solar cells are still poorly efficient to be competitively commercialized. A challenge will be to find new materials and better deposition techniques in order to obtain better performances. The research has led to several breakthroughs in efficiency, with a power conversion efficiency approaching 5 %. The efficiency of the solar cells produced in this work is even lower (lower than 1 %). Despite all, solar cells of this type are interesting and may represent a cheaper and easier alternative to traditional silicon-based solar panels.

In this study, the use of the discotic liquid crystalline HBCs and conjugated polymers based on 2,7-carbazole were investigated in detail as donor materials in organic bulk-heterojunction solar cells. It has been shown that they perform efficiently in photovoltaic devices in combination with suitable acceptors. The efficiency was found to depend strongly dependent on the morphology of the film. By investigation of a series of donor materials with similar molecular structures based on both discotic molecules and conjugated polymers, a structure-performance relation was established, which is not only instructive for these materials but also serves as a guideline for improved molecular design. For the series of HBCs used in this study, it is found that the device efficiency decreases with increasing length of the alkyl substituents in the HBC. Thus, the derivative with the smallest alkyl mantle, being more crystalline compared to the HBCs with longer alkyl chains, gave the highest EQE of 12%. A large interfacial separation was found in the blend of HBC-C6,2 and PDI, since the crystallization of the acceptor occurred in a solid matrix of HBC. This led to small dispersed organized domains and benefited the charge transport. In contrast, blends of HBC-C10,6/PDI or HBC-C14,10/PDI revealed a rather homogeneous film limiting the percolation pathways due to a mixed phase. For the first time, poly(2,7-carbazole) was incorporated as a donor material in solar cells using PDI as an electron acceptor. The good fit in orbital energy levels and absorption spectra led to high efficiency. This result indicates that conjugated polymers with high band-gap can also be applied as materials to build efficient solar cells if appropriate electron acceptors are chosen. In order to enhance the light absorption ability, new ladder-type polymers based on pentaphenylene and hexaphenylene with one and three nitrogen bridges per repeat unit have been synthesized and characterized. The polymer 2 with three nitrogen bridges showed more red-shifted absorbance and emission and better packing in the solid-state than the analogous polymer 3 with only one nitrogen bridge per monomer unit. An overall efficiency as high as 1.3% under solar light was obtained for the device based on 1 and PDI, compared with 0.7% for the PCz based device. Therefore, the device performance correlates to a large extent with the solar light absorption ability and the lateral distance between conjugated polymer chains. Since the lateral distance is determined by the length and number of attached alkyl side chains, it is possible to assume that these substituents insulate the charge carrier pathways and decrease the device performance. As an additional consequence, the active semiconductor is diluted in the insulating matrix leading to a lower light absorption. This work suggests ways to improve device performance by molecular design, viz. maintaining the HOMO level while bathochromically shifting the absorption by adopting a more rigid ladder-type structure. Also, a high ratio of nitrogen bridges with small alkyl substituents was a desirable feature both in terms of adjusting the absorption and maintaining a low lateral inter-chain separation, which was necessary for obtaining high current and efficiency values.

To assist rational compound design of organic semiconductors, two problems need to be addressed. First, the material morphology has to be known at an atomistic level. Second, with the morphology at hand, an appropriate charge transport model needs to be developed in order to link charge carrier mobility to structure.rnrnThe former can be addressed by generating atomistic morphologies using molecular dynamics simulations. However, the accessible range of time- and length-scales is limited. To overcome these limitations, systematic coarse-graining methods can be used. In the first part of the thesis, the Versatile Object-oriented Toolkit for Coarse-graining Applications is introduced, which provides a platform for the implementation of coarse-graining methods. Tools to perform Boltzmann inversion, iterative Boltzmann inversion, inverse Monte Carlo, and force-matching are available and have been tested on a set of model systems (water, methanol, propane and a single hexane chain). Advantages and problems of each specific method are discussed.rnrnIn partially disordered systems, the second issue is closely connected to constructing appropriate diabatic states between which charge transfer occurs. In the second part of the thesis, the description initially used for small conjugated molecules is extended to conjugated polymers. Here, charge transport is modeled by introducing conjugated segments on which charge carriers are localized. Inter-chain transport is then treated within a high temperature non-adiabatic Marcus theory while an adiabatic rate expression is used for intra-chain transport. The charge dynamics is simulated using the kinetic Monte Carlo method.rnrnThe entire framework is finally employed to establish a relation between the morphology and the charge mobility of the neutral and doped states of polypyrrole, a conjugated polymer. It is shown that for short oligomers, charge carrier mobility is insensitive to the orientational molecular ordering and is determined by the threshold transfer integral which connects percolating clusters of molecules that form interconnected networks. The value of this transfer integral can be related to the radial distribution function. Hence, charge mobility is mainly determined by the local molecular packing and is independent of the global morphology, at least in such a non-crystalline state of a polymer.

The addition of small quantities (similar to 5 wt pct) layered silicates into polymer materials has the potential to greatly increase the modulus without adversely affecting the toughness or processability of the composite. The effect of microstructural features in the polymer nanocomposite and their possible effects on the mechanical properties with particular reference to linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE)/montmorillonite nanocomposites was discussed.
