A high-power Ytterbium-doped fiber laser (YDFL) with homemade double clad fiber (DCF) is introduced in this paper. The output power characteristics of a linear cavity fiber laser have been studied theoretically by solving the rate equations and experimentally tested with single- and double-end-pumping configurations. When both ends of the fiber are pumped by two high-power laser diodes with a launched power of similar to 300 W each, a maximum CW output of 444 W is obtained with a slope efficiency of similar to 75%. ZnO/ITO/ZnO sandwich structure films were fabricated. The effects of buffer layer on the structure and optical properties of ZnO films were investigated by x-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence, optical transmittance, and absorption measurements. XRD spectra indicate that a buffer layer has the effects of lowering the grain orientation of ZnO films and increasing the residual stresses in the films. The near-band-edge emissions of ZnO films deposited on both single indium tin oxide (ITO) buffer and ITO/ZnO double buffers are significantly enhanced compared with that deposited on a bare substrate due to the quantum confinement effect. Three experiments were performed in an estuarine squid-trawl fishery in New South Wales, Australia, to test modifications to trawl nets. Lateral mesh openings were experimentally increased and physical bycatch reduction devices (BRDs) were placed in codends. These modifications aimed to reduce nontargeted catches of fish, while maintaining catches of the targeted broad squid (Photololigo etheridgei) and bottle squid (Loliolus noctiluca). Compared to conventional codends made with 41-mm diamond mesh, codends made with different posterior circumferences and larger 45-mm mesh had no significant effect on the catches of any species. The best performing configurations involved the installation of BRDs designed to separate organisms according to differences in behavior. In particular, versions of a composite square-mesh panel reduced the total weight of bycatch by up to 71% and there was no significant effect on the catches of squid. The results are discussed in terms of the probable differences in behavior between fish and squid in codends. After this study, a square-mesh panel BRD was voluntarily adopted throughout the fishery.

The flexoelectro-optic effect describes the rotation of the optic axis of a short-pitch chiral nematic liquid crystal under the application of an electric field. We investigate the effect in the uniform standing helix, or "Grandjean" configuration. An in-plane electric field is applied. The director profile is determined numerically using a static one-dimensional continuum model with strong surface anchoring. The Berreman method is used to solve for plane-wave solutions to Maxwell's equations, and predict the optical properties of the resulting structure in general cases. By using a chiral nematic with short pitch between crossed polarizers an optical switch may be generated. With no applied field the configuration is nontransmissive at normal incidence, but becomes transmissive with an applied field. For this case, numerical results using the Berreman method are supplemented with an analytic theory and found to be in good agreement. The transmitted intensity as a function of tilt, the contrast ratio, and the tilt required for full intensity modulation are presented. The angular dependence of the transmission is calculated and the isocontrast curves are plotted. For typical material and cell parameters a switching speed of 0.017 ms and contrast ratio of 1500:1 at normal incidence are predicted, at a switch-on tilt of 41.5 degrees. Experimental verification of the analytic and numerical models is provided.
