Steers were sorted into four groups based on hip height and fat cover at the start of the finishing period. Each group of sorted steers was fed diets containing 0.59 or 0.64 Mcal NEg per lb. of diet dry matter. Steers with less initial fat cover (0.08 in.) compared with those with more (0.17) had less carcass fat cover 103 days later. The steers with less fat cover accumulated fat at a faster rate, but this was not apparent prior to 80 days. Accretion of fat was best predicted by an exponential growth equation, and was not affected by the two concentrations of energy fed in this study. Steers with greater initial height accumulated fat cover at a slower rate than shorter steers. This difference was interpreted to mean that large-frame steers accumulate subcutaneous fat at a slower rate than medium-frame steers. Increase in area of the ribeye was best described by a linear equation. Initial fat cover, hip height, and concentrations of energy in the diet did not affect rate of growth of this muscle. Predicting carcass fat cover from the initial ultrasound measurement of fat thickness found 46 of the 51 carcasses with less than 0.4 in. of fat cover. Twelve carcasses predicted to have less than 0.4 in. of fat cover had more than 0.4 in. Five carcasses predicted to have more than 0.4 in. actually had less than that. Accurate initial measurements of initial fat thickness with ultrasound might be a useful measurement to sort cattle for specific marketing grids.

Measurements of the natural background radiation have been made at numerous places throughout the world. Very little work in this field has been done in developing countries. In Mexico the natural radiation to which the population is exposed has not been assessed. This dissertation represents a pioneer study in this environmental area. The radiation exposure which occupants within buildings receive as a result of naturally occurring radionuclides present in construction materials is the principal focus.^ Data were collected between August 1979 and November 1980. Continuous monitoring was done with TLDs placed on site for periods of 3 to 6 months. The instrumentation used for "real-time" measurements was a portable NaI (Tl) scintillation detector. In addition, radiometric measurements were performed on construction materials commonly used in Mexican homes.^ Based on TLD readings taken within 75 dwellings, the typical indoor exposure for a resident of the study area is 9.2 (mu)Rh('-1). The average reading of the 152 indoor scintillometer surveys was 9.5 (mu)Rh('-1), the outdoor reading 7.5 (mu)Rh('-1). Results of one-way and multi-way analyses of the exposure data to determine the effect due to building materials type, geologic subsoil, age of dwelling, and elevation are also presented. Contents of labile (acid-soluble) sulfides were determined in the upper layer of bottom sediments at 80 stations on the Caucasian shelf of the Black Sea. Maximum values of this parameter occurred in black mud accumulated in zones of intense pollution in the Gelendzhik and Tsemess bays and in shelf areas adjacent to large health resort objects and to seaports. Contents of acid-soluble sulfides in sediments varied from 400 to 900 mg S/dm**3 of wet mud. In zones of moderate pollution they varied from 200 to 400 mg S/dm**3. Rate of sulfate reduction was 10-40 mg S/dm**3 of wet sediment per day. Obtained data show that accumulation of labile sulfides in the upper layer of shelf bottom sediments is directly related to anthropogenic pollution and is one of the most hazardous environmental aftereffects.

Features of sedimentation of carbonate mineral associations in the northeastern shelf of Sakhalin and other regions of the Sea of Okhotsk are considered. Special attention is paid to correlation between carbonate neoformations and abnormal fluxes of methane. In bottom sediments with high contents of methane carbonate-sulfide associations occur, their generation has been influenced by gas (mostly methane) fields. Joint consideration of distribution of gas and geochemical fields and mineral associations in the Sea of Okhotsk allows to understand better a mechanism of mineral generation in bottom sediments, possible formation of ore accumulations, and to use them as indicators for prognosis of mineral resources.

Quantitative characteristics for rates of diagenetic processes in the upper (0-30 cm) layer of sedimentary deposits in the area of the Spitsbergen (Svalbard) Archipelago (78°-80°N) were obtained by lithologo-geochemical, radioisotope (35S, 14C), and stable isotope (d34S, d13C) studies. It was proved that rates of diagenetic processes in polar deposits at 123-395 m depth affected by the East Spitsbergen ''warm'' current are mostly determined by bioproductivity and are commensurate with rates of processes in shelf deposits of temperate latitudes. High contents of migratory methane (up to 263 ml/dm**3) and isotopically-light organic carbon (Corg, d13C = -30 per mil PDB) were found in the 1 m layer of shelf deposits (at 123 m sea depth) with low bacterial in situ production of methane. It was shown that methane is not utilized in the deposits by the methanotrophic bacterial community and it may be supplied to the water mass and, probably, to the atmosphere.

Gas composition and hydrochemistry of bottom waters of the Bay of Plenty in the hydrothermally active zone of the Pacific island arc are investigated. Methane content in underwater vents is an order of magnitude greater than that in volcanic exhalations on the land. Salinity, pH, total content of CO2, its partial pressure, and silica content also differ. Correlations between gas parameters, hydrochemical parameters, and biological and microbiological parameters are identified.

We present a regional geoid model for the area of Lake Vostok, Antarctica, from a combination of local airborne gravity, ice-surface and ice-thickness data and a lake bathymetry model. The topography data are used for residual terrain modelling (RTM) in a remove-compute-restore approach together with the GOCE satellite model GOCO03S. The disturbing potential at the Earth's surface, i.e. the quasigeoid, is predicted by least-squares collocation (LSC) and subsequently converted to geoid heights. Compared to GOCO03S our regional solution provides an additional short-wavelength signal of up to 1.48 m, or 0.56 m standard deviation, respectively.
