The alkaline earth tricyanomethanides Mg(tcm)(2) center dot 2H(2)O, Ca(tcm)(2), Sr(tcm)(2) - H2O and Ba(tcm)(2) center dot 2H(2)O were prepared from aqueous solutions of the respective chlorides and silver tricyanomethanide. Their IR spectra and thermal behavior are described. The crystal structures of Ca(tcm)(2) and Ba(tcm)(2) center dot 2H(2)O were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure of Ca(tcm)(2) is of the type found for several transition metal tricyanomethanides [1], containing two independent interpenetrating networks. Ba(tcm)(2) center dot 2H(2)O has a unique crystal structure corresponding to a three-dimensional coordination polymer with nine fold coordinated Ba atoms connected by water molecules and tricyanomethanide anions.

The synthesis, spectra and X-ray crystal structure of N,N`-(+/-)-trans-1,2-cyclohexylenebis(3-ethoxysalicylideneamine) H-2(t-3-EtOsalchxn), a salen-type ligand, are reported. The Schiff base was characterized by elemental analysis, m.p., IR, electronic spectra, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra. The spectra are discussed and compared with those of N,N`-(+/-)-trans-1,2-cyclohexylenebis(salicylideneamine), H-2(t-salchxn). The electronic and IR spectra were also resolved by deconvolution. The influence of the ethoxy group on the IR, electronic spectrum, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra is discussed. Strong intramolecular forces are present as supported by the IR and H-1 NMR spectra and the X-ray crystal structure. An intermolecular hydrogen bond is observed and appears twice in a pair of molecules in the unit cell. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The triply chloro-bridged binuclear complexes [Ph3X=O...H...O=XPh3][Ru2Cl7(XPh3)(2)].0.5(CH2Cl2) (H2O) (X = As or P) were obtained from [RuCl3(XPh3)(2)DMA].DMA (DMA = dimethylacetamide) CH2Cl2/Et2O solution. The structures were characterized by X-ray diffraction studies. The complexes are formed from two Ru atoms bridged by three chloride anions. The two ruthenium atoms are also coordinated to two non-bridging Cl atoms and an AsPh3 or PPh3 ligand respectively. As an interesting feature, the cations of these complexes are protons, trapped in a very short hydrogen bond between two triphenylarsine or triphenylphosphine oxide molecules.

The heart of oxygenic photosynthesis is photosystem II (PSII), a multisubunit protein complex that uses solar energy to drive the splitting of water and production of molecular oxygen. The effectiveness of the photochemical reaction center of PSII depends on the efficient transfer of excitation energy from the surrounding antenna chlorophylls. A kinetic model for PSII, based on the x-ray crystal structure coordinates of 37 antenna and reaction center pigment molecules, allows us to map the major energy transfer routes from the antenna chlorophylls to the reaction center chromophores. The model shows that energy transfer to the reaction center is slow compared with the rate of primary electron transport and depends on a few bridging chlorophyll molecules. This unexpected energetic isolation of the reaction center in PSII is similar to that found in the bacterial photosystem, conflicts with the established view of the photophysics of PSII, and may be a functional requirement for primary photochemistry in photosynthesis. In addition, the model predicts a value for the intrinsic photochemical rate constant that is 4 times that found in bacterial reaction centers.

New tin(IV) complexes of empirical formula, Sn(SNNNS)I-2 (SNNNS = anionic form of the 2,6-diacetylpyridine Schiff bases of S-methyl- or S-benzyldithiocarbazate) have been prepared and characterized by a variety of physico-chemical techniques. The structure of Sn(dapsme)I-2 has been determined by single crystal X-ray crystallographic structural analysis. The complex has a seven-coordinate distorted pentagonal-bipyramidal geometry with the Schiff base coordinated to the tin(IV) ion as a dinegatively charged pentadentate chelating agent via the pyridine nitrogen atom, the two azomethine nitrogen atoms and the two thiolate sulfur atoms. The ligand occupies the equatorial plane and the iodo ligands are coordinated to the tin(IV) ion at axial positions. The distortion from an ideal pentagonal bipyramidal geometry is attributed to the restricted bite size of the pentadentate ligands. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

1,2-Bis[10,15-di(3,5-di-tert-butyl)phenylporphyrinatonickel(II)-5-yl]diazene was synthesised via copper catalysed coupling of aminated nickel(II) 5,10-diarylporphyrin (“corner porphyrin”) and its X-ray crystal structure was determined. Two different crystals yielded different structures, one with the free meso positions in a trans-like orientation, and the other with a cis-like disposition. The free meso positions of the obtained dimer have been further functionalised while the synthesis of a zinc analogue has so far been unsuccessful. The X-ray crystal structure of the dinitro derivative of the dinickel(II) azoporphyrin was determined, and the structure showed a cis-like disposition of the nitro groups.

Reaction of anhydrous lanthanide trichlorides with tetrahydrofurfuryl indenyl lithium in THF afforded bis(tetrahydrofurfurylindenyl) lanthanocene chlorides complexes (C4H7OCH2C9H6)(2) LnCl, Ln = Nd (1), Sm (2), Dy (3), Ho (4), Er (5), Yb (6). The X-ray crystallographic structures of all the six complexes were determined and these indicate that they are unsolvated nine-coordinate monomeric complexes with a trans arrangement of both the sidearm and indenyl rings in the solid state. They belong to the same crystal system (orthorhombic) and space group (P2(1)2(1)2(1)) with the same structure. Especially, they are more stable to air and moisture than the corresponding unsubstituted indenyl lanthanide complexes.

Rhodanines (2-thio-4-oxothiazolidines) are synthetic small molecular weight organic molecules with diverse applications in biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, photochemistry, coordination chemistry and industry. The X-ray crystal structure determination of two rhodanine derivatives, namely (I), 3-aminorhodanine [3-amino-2-thio-4-oxothiazolidine], C3H4N2OS2, and (II) 3-methylrhodanine [3-methyl-2-thio-4-oxothiazolidine], C4H5NOS2, have been conducted at 100 K. I crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with unit cell parameters a = 9.662(2), b = 9.234(2), c = 13.384(2) angstrom, beta = 105.425(3)degrees, V = 1151.1(3) angstrom(3), Z = 8 (2 independent molecules per asymmetric unit), density (calculated) = 1.710 mg/m(3), absorption coefficient = 0.815 mm(-1). II crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Iba2 with unit cell a = 20.117(4), b = 23.449(5), c = 7.852(2) angstrom, V = 3703.9(12) angstrom(3), Z = 24 (three independent molecules per asymmetric unit), density (calculated) = 1.584 mg/m(3), absorption coefficient 0.755 mm(-1). For I in the final refinement cycle the data/restraints/parameter ratios were 2639/0/161, goodness-of-fit on F-2 = 0.934, final R indices [I > 2sigma(I)] were R1 = 0.0299, wR2 = 0.0545 and R indices (all data) R1 = 0.0399, wR2 = 0.0568. The largest difference peak and hole were 0.402 and -0.259 e angstrom(-3). For II in the final refinement cycle the data/restraints/parameter ratios were 3372/1/221, goodness-of-fit on F(2) = 0.950, final R indices [I > 2sigma(I)] were R1 = 0.0407, wR2 = 0.1048 and R indices (all data) R1 = 0.0450, wR2 = 0.1088. The absolute structure parameter = 0.19(9) and largest difference peak and hole 0.934 and -0.301 e angstrom(-3). Details of the geometry of the five molecules (two for I and three for II) and the crystal structures are fully discussed. Corresponding features of the molecular geometry are highly consistent and firmly establish the geometry of the rhodanine

Two new metal-organic based polymeric complexes, [Cu-4(O2CCH2CO2)(4)(L)].7H(2)O (1) and [CO2(O2CCH2CO2)(2)(L)].2H(2)O (2) [L = hexamethylenetetramine (urotropine)], have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystal structure determination and magnetic studies. Complex 1 is a 1D coordination polymer comprising a carboxylato, bridged Cu-4 moiety linked by a tetradentate bridging urotropine. Complex 2 is a 3D coordination polymer made of pseudo-two-dimensional layers of Co(II) ions linked by malonate anions in syn-anticonformation which are bridged by bidentate urotropine in trans fashion, Complex 1 crystallizes in the orthothombic system, space group Pmmn, with a = 14,80(2) Angstrom, b = 14.54(2) Angstrom, c = 7.325(10) Angstrom, beta = 90degrees, and Z = 4. Complex 2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group Imm2, a = 7.584(11) Angstrom, b = 15.80(2) Angstrom, c = 6.939(13) Angstrom, beta = 90.10degrees(1), and Z = 4. Variable temperature (300-2 K) magnetic behavior reveals the existence of ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions in 1 and only antiferromagnetic interactions in 2. The best fitted parameters for complex 1 are J = 13.5 cm(-1), J = -18.1 cm(-1), and g = 2.14 considering only intra-Cu-4 interactions through carboxylate and urotropine pathways. In case of complex 2, the fit of the magnetic data considering intralayer interaction through carboxylate pathway as well as interlayer interaction via urotropine pathway gave no satisfactory result at this moment using any model known due to considerable orbital contribution of Co(II) ions to the magnetic moment and its complicated structure. Assuming isolated Co(II) ions (without any coupling, J = 0) the shape of the chi(M)T curve fits well with experimental data except at very low temperatures.

Five manganese complexes in an N 4O 2 donor environment have been prepared. Four of the compounds involve aroyl hydrazone as ligands and manganese is in a +2 oxidation state. The fifth compound was prepared using N,Nprime-o-phenylenebis(salicylideneimine) and imidazole as ligands where manganese is present in +3 oxidation state. X-ray crystal structure of one Mn +2 compound and the Mn +3 compound was determined. The relative stabilities of the Mn +2 and Mn +3 oxidation states were analyzed using the structural data and MO calculations. Manganese(II) complexes of four aroyl hydrazone ligands were prepared and characterized by different physicochemical techniques. The complexes are of the type Mn(L) 2, where L stands for the deprotonated hydrazone ligand. One of the compounds, Mn(pybzhz) 2, was also characterized by single crystal structure determination. In all these complexes, the Mn(II) is in an N 4O 2 donor environment and the Mn(II) center cannot be oxidized either chemically or electrochemically. However, when another ligand Ophsal is used to give the compound [Mn(Ophsal)(imzH) 2]ClO 4, which was also characterized by X-ray crystal structure determination, manganese can easily avail the +3 oxidation state. The relative stabilities of the +2 and +3 oxidation states of manganese were analyzed and it was concluded that the extent of distortion from the perfect octahedral geometry is the main controlling factor in these cases. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. Objective: The aims of this study were to establish the structure of the potent anticonvulsant enaminone methyl 4-(4′-bromophenyl)amino-6-methyl-2- oxocyclohex-3-en-1-oate (E139), and to determine the energetically preferred conformation of the molecule, which is responsible for the biological activity. Materials and Methods: The structure of the molecule was determined by X-ray crystallography. Theoretical ab initio calculations with different basis sets were used to compare the energies of the different enantiomers and to other structurally related compounds. Results: The X-ray crystal structure revealed two independent molecules of E139, both with absolute configuration C11(S), C12(R), and their inverse. Ab initio calculations with the 6-31G, 3-21G and STO-3G basis sets confirmed that the C11(S), C12(R) enantiomer with both substituents equatorial had the lowest energy. Compared to relevant crystal structures, the geometry of the theoretical structures shows a longer C-N and shorter C=O distance with more cyclohexene ring puckering in the isolated molecule. Conclusion: Based on a pharmacophoric model it is suggested that the enaminone system HN-C=C-C=O and the 4-bromophenyl group in E139 are necessary to confer anticonvulsant property that could lead to the design of new and improved anticonvulsant agents.
