We have fabricated a new van-der-Waals heterostructure composed by BN/graphene/C60. We performed transport measurements on the preliminary BN/graphene device finding a sharp Dirac point at the neutrality point. After the deposition of a C60 thin film by thermal evaporation, we have observed a significant n-doping of the heterostructure. This suggests an unusual electron transfer from C60 into the BN/graphene structure. This BN/graphene/C60 heterostructure can be of interest in photovoltaic applications. It can be used to build devices like p-n junctions, where C60 can be easily deposited in defined regions of a graphene junction by the use of a shadow mask. Our results are contrasted with theoretical calculations.

Many different photovoltaic technologies are being developed for large-scale solar energy conversion such as crystalline silicon solar cells, thin film solar cells based on a-Si:H, CIGS and CdTe. As the demand for photovoltaics rapidly increases, there is a pressing need for the identification of new visible light absorbing materials for thin-film solar cells. Nowadays there are a wide range of earth-abundant absorber materials that have been studied around the world by different research groups. The current thin film photovoltaic market is dominated by technologies based on the use of CdTe and CIGS, these solar cells have been made with laboratory efficiencies up to 19.6% and 20.8% respectively. However, the scarcity and high cost of In, Ga and Te can limit in the long-term the production in large scale of photovoltaic devices. On the other hand, quaternary CZTSSe which contain abundant and inexpensive elements like Cu, Zn, Sn, S and Se has been a potential candidate for PV technology having solar cell efficiency up to 12.6%, however, there are still some challenges that must be accomplished for this material. Therefore, it is evident the need to find the alternative inexpensive and earth abundant materials for thin film solar cells. One of these alternatives is copper antimony sulfide(CuSbS2) which contains abundant and non-toxic elements which has a direct optical band gap of 1.5 eV, the optimum value for an absorber material in solar cells, suggesting this material as one among the new photovoltaic materials. This thesis work focuses on the preparation and characterization of In6Se7, CuSbS2 and CuSb(S1-xSex)2 thin films for their application as absorber material in photovoltaic structures using two stage process by the combination of chemical bath deposition and thermal evaporation.

Alumina thin films have been obtained by resistive evaporation of Al layer, followed by thermal oxidation by means of annealing in appropriate atmosphere (air or O2-rich), with variation of annealing time and temperature. Optical and structural properties of the investigated films reveal that the temperature of 550 °C is responsible for reasonable oxidation, which is accelerated up to 8 times for O2-rich atmosphere. Results of surface electrical resistivity and Raman spectroscopy are in good agreement with these findings. Surprisingly, X-ray and Raman data suggest also the crystallization of Si nuclei at glass substrate-alumina interface, which would come from the soda-lime glass used as substrate. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

This thesis work has been developed in the framework of a new experimental campaign, proposed by the NUCL-EX Collaboration (INFN III Group), in order to progress in the understanding of the statistical properties of light nuclei, at excitation energies above particle emission threshold, by measuring exclusive data from fusion-evaporation reactions. The determination of the nuclear level density in the A~20 region, the understanding of the statistical behavior of light nuclei with excitation energies ~3 A.MeV, and the measurement of observables linked to the presence of cluster structures of nuclear excited levels are the main physics goals of this work. On the theory side, the contribution to this project given by this work lies in the development of a dedicated Monte-Carlo Hauser-Feshbach code for the evaporation of the compound nucleus. The experimental part of this thesis has consisted in the participation to the measurement 12C+12C at 95 MeV beam energy, at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro - INFN, using the GARFIELD+Ring Counter(RCo) set-up, from the beam-time request to the data taking, data reduction, detector calibrations and data analysis. Different results of the data analysis are presented in this thesis, together with a theoretical study of the system, performed with the new statistical decay code. As a result of this work, constraints on the nuclear level density at high excitation energy for light systems ranging from C up to Mg are given. Moreover, pre-equilibrium effects, tentatively interpreted as alpha-clustering effects, are put in evidence, both in the entrance channel of the reaction and in the dissipative dynamics on the path towards thermalisation.

A series of bimetallic acetylacetonate (acac) complexes, AlxCr1-x(acac)(3), 0 <= x <= 1, have been synthesized for application as precursors for the CVD Of Substituted oxides, such as (AlxCr1-x)(2)O-3. Detailed thermal analysis has been carried out on these complexes, which are solids that begin subliming at low temperatures, followed by melting, and evaporation from the melt. By applying the Langmuir equation to differential thermogravimetry data, the vapour pressure of these complexes is estimated. From these vapour pressure data, the distinctly different enthalpies of sublimation and evaporation are calculated, using the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. Such a determination of both the enthalpies of sublimation and evaporation of complexes, which sublime and melt congruently, does not appear to have been reported in the literature to date.

Capillary pumped loop (CPL) and loop heat pipe (LHP) are passive two-phase heat transport devices. They have been gaining importance as a part of the thermal control system of spacecraft. The evaporation heat transfer coefficient at the tooth-wick interface of an LHP or CPL has a significant impact on the evaporator temperature. It is also the main parameter in sizing of a CPL or LHP. Experimentally determined evaporation heat transfer coefficients from a three-port CPL with tubular axially grooved (TAG) evaporator and a TAG LHP with acetone, R-134A, and ammonia as working fluids are presented in this paper. The influences of working fluid, hydrodynamic blocks in the core, evaporator configuration (LHP or CPL), and adverse elevation (evaporator above condenser) on the heat transfer coefficient are presented.

Crystals of a new nonlinear optical (NLO) material, viz., L-asparagine-L-tartaric acid (LALT)(1) were grown by slow evaporation of an aqueous solution containing equimolar concentrations of L-asparagine and t-tartaric acid. The structure of the title compound which crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric monoclinic space group P2(1) consists of a molecule of L-asparagine and a molecule of free L-tartaric acid both of which are interlinked by three varieties of H-bonding interactions namely O-H center dot center dot center dot O, N-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot O. The UV-Vis-NIR spectrum of 1 reveals its transparent nature while the vibrational spectra confirm the presence of the functional groups in 1. The thermal stability and second harmonic generation (SHG) conversion efficiency of 1 were investigated. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Metallic and other type of coatings on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors alter their sensitivity with thermal and mechanical stress while protecting the fragile optical fiber in harsh sensing surroundings. The behavior of the coated materials is unique in their response to thermal and mechanical stress depending on the thickness and the mode of coating. The thermal stress during the coating affects the temperature sensitivity of FBG sensors. We have explored the thermal response of FBGs coated with Al and Pb to an average thickness of 80 nm using flash evaporation technique where the FBG sensor is mounted in a region at room temperature in an evacuated chamber having a pressure of 10(6) Torr which will minimize any thermal stress during the coating process. The coating thickness is chosen in the nanometer region with the aim to study thermal behavior of nanocoatings and their effect on FBG sensitivity. The sensitivity of FBGs is evaluated from the wavelengths recorded using an optical sensing interrogator sm 130 (Micron Optics) from room temperature to 300 degrees C both during heating and cooling. It is observed that the sensitivity of the metal coated fibers is better than the reference FBG with no coating for the entire range of temperature. For a coating thickness of 80 nm, Al coated FBG is more sensitive than the one coated with Pb up to 170 degrees C and it reverses at higher temperatures. This point is identified as a reversible phase transition in Pb monolayers as the 2-dimensional aspects of the metal layers are dominant in the nanocoatings of Pb. On cooling, the phase transition reverses and the FBGs return to the original state and for repeated cycles of heating and cooling the same pattern is observed. Thus the FBG functions as a sensor of the phase transitions of the coatings also. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Antimony doped tin oxide (Sb:SnO2) nanowires were grown by thermal and e-beam assisted co-evaporation of Sb and Sn in the presence of oxygen at a low substrate temperature of 450 degrees C. The field emission scanning electron microscopy study revealed that the nanowires had a length and diameter of 2-4 mu m and 20-60 nm respectively. Transmission electron microscopy study revealed the single crystalline nature of the nanowires; energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and EDS mapping on the nanowires confirmed the presence of Sb doping in the nanowires. UV light detection study on the doped SnO2 nanowire films exhibited fast response and recovery time compared to undoped SnO2 nanowire films. This is an innovative and simple method to grow doped SnO2 nanowires.

A large-eddy simulation with transitional structure function(TSF) subgrid model we previously proposed was performed to investigate the turbulent flow with thermal influence over an inhomogeneous canopy, which was represented as alternative large and small roughness elements. The aerodynamic and thermodynamic effects of the presence of a layer of large roughness elements were modelled by adding a drag term to the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations and a heat source/sink term to the scalar equation, respectively. The layer of small roughness elements was simply treated using the method as described in paper (Moeng 1984, J. Atmos Sci. 41, 2052-2062) for homogeneous rough surface. The horizontally averaged statistics such as mean vertical profiles of wind velocity, air temperature, et al., are in reasonable agreement with Gao et al.(1989, Boundary layer meteorol. 47, 349-377) field observation (homogeneous canopy). Not surprisingly, the calculated instantaneous velocity and temperature fields show that the roughness elements considerably changed the turbulent structure within the canopy. The adjustment of the mean vertical profiles of velocity and temperature was studied, which was found qualitatively comparable with Belcher et al. (2003, J Fluid Mech. 488, 369-398)'s theoretical results. The urban heat island(UHI) was investigated imposing heat source in the region of large roughness elements. An elevated inversion layer, a phenomenon often observed in the urban area (Sang et al., J Wind Eng. Ind. Aesodyn. 87, 243-258)'s was successfully simulated above the canopy. The cool island(CI) was also investigated imposing heat sink to simply model the evaporation of plant canopy. An inversion layer was found very stable and robust within the canopy.

ZrO2, films were deposited by electron-beam evaporation with the oxygen partial pressure varying from 3 X 10(-3) Pa to I I X 10(-3) Pa. The phase structure of the samples was characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD). The thermal absorption of the films was measured by the surface thermal lensing technique. A spectrophotometer was employed to measure the refractive indices of the samples. The laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) was assessed using a 1064, nm Nd: yttritium-aluminium-garnet pulsed laser at pulse width of 12 ns. The influence of oxygen partial pressure on the microstructure and LIDT of ZrO2 films was investigated. XRD data revealed that the films changed from polycrystalline to amorphous as the oxygen partial pressure increased. The variation of refractive index at 550 nm wavelength indicated that the packing density of the films decreased gradually with increasing oxygen partial pressure. The absorptance of the samples decreased monotonically from 125.2 to 84.5 ppm with increasing oxygen partial pressure. The damage threshold, values increased from 18.5 to 26.7 J/cm(2) for oxygen partial pressures varying from 3 X 10(-3) Pa to 9 X 10(-3) Pa, but decreased to 17.3 J/cm(2) in the case of I I X 10(-3) Pa. Laser conditioning effects of the dielectric mirror coatings with different designs were investigated. Simple quarter-wave ZrO2:Y2O3/SiO2 mirrors and half-wave SiO2 over-coated ZrO2:Y2O3/SiO2 mirror coatings were fabricated by E-beam evaporation (EBE). The absorbance of the samples before and after laser conditioning was measured by surface thermal lensing (STL) technology and the defects density was detected under Nomarski microscope. The enhancement of the laser damage resistance was found after laser conditioning. The dependence of the laser conditioning on the coating design was also observed and the over-coated sample obtained greatest enhancement, whereas the absorbance of the samples did not change obviously. During the sub-threshold fluence raster scanning, the minor damage about defects size was found and the assumption of pre-damage mechanism, based on the functional damage concept, was put forward. The improvement of the laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) was attributed to the benign damage of the defects and the dependence on the coating design owed to the damage growth behavior of different coating designs. ZrO2 thin films were prepared by electron beam evaporation at different oxygen partial pressures. The influences of oxygen partial pressure on structure and related properties of ZrO2 thin films were studied. Transmittance, thermal absorption, structure and residual stress of ZrO2 thin films were measured by spectrophotometer, surface thermal lensing technique (STL), X-ray diffraction and optical interferometer, respectively. The results showed that the structure and related properties varied progressively with the increase of oxygen partial pressure. The refractive indices and the packing densities of the thin films decreased when the oxygen partial pressure increased. The tetragonal phase fraction in the thin films decreased gradually as oxygen partial pressure increased. The residual stress of film deposited at base pressure was high compressive stress, the value decreased with the increase of oxygen partial pressure, and the residual stress became tensile with the further increase of oxygen pressure, which was corresponding to the evolution of packing densities and variation of interplanar distances.
