A solo exhibition by Joseph Breikers included in the MetroArts 2011 galleries Program. The exhbition comprised a series of predominantly sculptural works that reflected the artists ongoing interest in medieval, gothic and death metal visual motifs. The exhibition thus acted as a ironic meditation on ritual, belonging and cultural identity.

Ductile crack propagation with the strain-energy density criterion

The strain energy density criterion is used to characterize subcritical crack growth in a thin aluminum alloy sheet undergoing general yielding. A finite element analysis which incorporates both material and geometrical nonlinear behaviors of the cracked sheets is developed to predict fracture loads at varying crack growth increments. The predicted results are in excellent agreement with those measured experimentally, thus confirming the validity of the strain energy density criterion for characterizing ductile crack propagation.

Body and Grotesque as Self-Disruption in Kerstin Hensel’s Gothic East(ern) German Novel Lärchenau (2008)

[EN] By analysing the novel Lärchenau and its -to a certain point- gothic features, this article interprets the elaboration of body in this novel as a site of the expression of power, but also as an alternative language. The grotesque dimension and the representation of the bodily numbness and pain as projections of historical awareness are key elements for the interpretation of Lärchenau in the context of Post-Unification Germany.

Transgressive elements in The Monk: social taboos

A presente dissertação tem como objetivo mostrar como a literatura gótica pode ser atemporal, subvertendo as mentes e conceitos de seus leitores. Partindo do contexto histórico e cultural em que The Monk se inseriu, esse trabalho visa levantar as questões e elementos tão fortemente reprimidos em nossa sociedade desde o final do século XVIII, como as idéias de mal, abjeção e expressão do eu, em um diálogo permanente com a teoria de Michel Foucault, David Punter, Julia Kristeva, entre outros. Desta forma, a análise do romance se dá paralelamente a uma crítica social, visto que a obra gótica tem por um de seus fins denunciar e deslocar a realidade social. Em última instância, será feita a análise algumas personagens do romance e sua respectiva importância na obra

The architecture of influence: Paul Rudolph's Art and Architecture Building at Yale

Focussing on Paul Rudolph’s Art & Architecture Building at Yale, this thesis demonstrates how the building synthesises the architect’s attitude to architectural education, urbanism and materiality. It tracks the evolution of the building from its origins – which bear a relationship to Rudolph’s pedagogical ideas – to later moments when its occupants and others reacted to it in a series of ways that could never have been foreseen. The A&A became the epicentre of the university’s counter culture movement before it was ravaged by a fire of undetermined origins. Arguably, it represents the last of its kind in American architecture, a turning point at the threshold of postmodernism. Using an archive that was only made available to researchers in 2009, this is the first study to draw extensively on the research files of the late architectural writer and educator, C. Ray Smith. Smith’s 1981 manuscript about the A&A entitled “The Biography of a Building,” was never published. The associated research files and transcripts of discussions with some thirty interviewees, including Rudolph, provide a previously unavailable wealth of information. Following Smith’s methodology, meetings were recorded with those involved in the A&A including, where possible, some of Smith’s original interviewees. When placed within other significant contexts – the physicality of the building itself as well as the literature which surrounds it – these previously untold accounts provide new perspectives and details, which deepen the understanding of the building and its place within architectural discourse. Issues revealed include the importance of the influence of Louis Kahn’s Yale Art Gallery and Yale’s Collegiate Gothic Campus on the building’s design. Following a tumultuous first fifty years, the A&A remains an integral part of the architectural education of Yale students and, furthermore, constitutes an important didactic tool for all students of architecture.

Modelling the effect of water immersion thermal processing on polyacetylene levels and instrumental colour of carrot disks

C₁₇ polyacetylenes are a group of bioactive compounds present in carrots which have recently gained scientific attention due to their cytotoxicity against cancer cells. In common with many bioactive compounds, their levels may be influenced by thermal processes, such as boiling or water immersion. This study investigated the effect of a number of water immersion time/temperature combinations on concentrations of these compounds and attempted to model the changes. Carrot samples were thermally treated by heating in water at temperatures from 50–100 °C and holding times of 2–60 min. Following heating, levels of falcarinol (FaOH), falcarindiol (FaDOH), falcarindiol-3-acetate (FaDOAc) and Hunter colour parameters (L^*, a^*, b^*) were determined. FaOH, FaDOH, FaDOAc levels were significantly reduced at lower temperatures (50–60 °C). In contrast, samples heated at temperatures from 70–100 °C exhibited higher levels of polyacetylenes (p < 0.05) than did raw unprocessed samples. Regression modelling was used to model the effects of temperature and holding time on the levels of the variables measured. Temperature treatment and holding time were found to significantly affect the polyacetylene content of carrot disks. Predicted models were found to be significant (p < 0.05) with high coefficients of determination (R²).

Endocrine disrupting effects of ochratoxin A at the level of nuclear receptor activation and steroidogenesis

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a mycotoxin and extrolite of fungi which has been reported in a range of foods. This study uses mammalian reporter gene assays (RGAs) with natural steroid receptors and the H295R steroidogenesis assay to assess the endocrine disrupting activity of OTA.

At the receptor level, OTA (within a concentration range of 0.25–2500 ng/ml) did not induce an agonistic response in an oestrogen, androgen, progestagen or glucocorticoid RGA. An antagonistic effect was observed in all of the RGAs at the highest concentration tested (2500 ng/ml). However, while there was no significant cytotoxic effect observed in the MTT (thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide) cell viability assay at this concentration, there was a corresponding change in cell morphology which may be related to the resulting antagonistic effect.

At the hormone production level, H295R cells were used as a steroidogenesis model and exposed to OTA (within a concentration range of 0.1–1000 ng/ml). Treatment of the cells with 1000 ng/ml OTA increased the production of estradiol (117 ± 14 ng/ml) over 3 times that of the solvent control (36 ± 9 pg/ml). Western blotting confirmed an increase in aromatase protein.

Overall the results indicate that OTA does not appear to interact with steroid receptors but has the potential to cause endocrine disruption by interfering with steroidogenesis. This is the first study identifying the effect OTA may have on production of the steroid hormone estradiol.

"Angels and Demons in Cromwellian and Restoration Ireland: Heresy and the Supernatural"

This essay explores accounts of supernatural activity in Cromwellian and Restoration Ireland. Religious life in Cromwellian Ireland was driven by expectations of the unusual—including audible voices from heaven, material encounters with angels, and spiritual encounters with demons. Some conservative Protestants linked this activity to the development and dissemination of heretical belief, while some who had such encounters were confident that it was compatible with the Cromwellian religious mainstream. Crawford Gribben explores the flexibility in the discourse of the marvelous in Ireland and the ways in which the administration contributed to it, and the alignment of the supernatural with various confessional convictions and postures, as well as theological radicalism. After the Restoration, accounts of supernatural encounters were remembered as ghost stories, not as matters for theological debate, a cultural transition linked to the development of a historiography that has continued to invest the Irish Cromwellian past with Gothic tropes.

Processes influencing the destruction of microcystin-LR by TiO2 photocatalysis

We have previously reported the effectiveness of TiO₂ photocatalysis in the destruction of the cyanotoxin microcystin-LR [P.K.J. Robertson, L.A. Lawton, B. Münch, J. Rouzade, J. Chem. Soc., Chem. Commun., 4 (1997) 393; P.K.J. Robertson, L.A. Lawton, B. Münch, B.J.P.A. Cornish, J. Adv. Oxid. Technol., in press]. In this paper we report an investigation of factors which influence the rate of the toxin destruction at the catalyst surface. A primary kinetic isotope effect of approximately 3 was observed when the destruction was performed in a heavy water solvent. Hydroxylated compounds were observed as products of the destruction process. No destruction was observed when the process was investigated under a nitrogen atmosphere.

On the halogenation of N(1),N(2)-di-t-Boc-5-hydroxy-piperazic acid esters and the conformational preferences of their 5-halo-piperazic acid products. The importance of A1,3 rotameric-strain in determining N(2)-acyl piperazic acid ring conformation

In this Letter, an unambiguous synthetic strategy is reported for the preparation of enantiomerically purecis-5-halo-piperazic acid derivatives in single diastereoisomer form. Contrary to the recent report by Shin and co-workers (Chem. Lett. 2001, 1172), in which it is claimed that the Ph₃P and N-chlorosuccinimide (NCS)-mediated chlorination of (3R,5S)-trans-N(1),N(2)-di-t-Boc-5-hydroxy-piperazic acid derivative 1proceeds with retention of configuration at C(5) to give 2, we now show that this and related Ph₃P-mediated halogenations all occur with S_N2 inversion at the alcohol center, as is customary for such reactions. Specifically, we demonstrate that the (3R,5S)-trans-5-Cl-piperazic acid derivative 2 claimed by Shin and co-workers (Chem. Lett. 2001, 1172) is in actual fact the chlorinated (3S,5R)-enantiomer 6, which must have been prepared from the cis-(3S,5S)-alcohol 3, a molecule whose synthesis is not formally described in the Shin paper. We further show here that the cis-(3R,5R)-5-Cl-Piz 13 claimed by Shin and co-workers inChem. Lett. 2001, 1172, is also (3S,5R)-trans-5-Cl-Piz 6. Authentic 13 has now been synthesized by us, for the very first time, here. Since Lindsley and Kennedy have recently utilized the now invalid Shin and co-workers’ retentive Ph₃P/NCS chlorination procedure on 1 in their synthetic approach to piperazimycin A (Tetrahedron Lett. 2010, 51, 2493), it follows that their claimed 5-Cl-Piz-containing dipeptide 25 probably has the alternate structure 26, where the 5-Cl-Piz residue has a 3,5-cis-configuration. The aforementioned stereochemical misassignments appear to have come from a mix-up of starting materials by Shin and co-workers (Chem. Lett. 2001, 1172), and an under-appreciation of the various steric and conformational effects that operate in N(2)-acylated piperazic acid systems, most especially rotameric A^1,3-strain. The latter has now been unambiguously delineated and defined here under the banner of the A^1,3-rotamer effect.

Daughters of Lilith : transgressive femininity in Bram Stoker’s late gothic fiction

Daughters of Lilith: Transgressive Femininity in Bram Stoker’s Late Gothic Fiction explore le thème de la transgression féminine dans quatre romans gothiques de Bram Stoker. En combinant les études féministes et les études de genre, cette thèse examine les différents visages de la dissidence féminine à travers Dracula (1897), The Jewel of Seven Stars (1903), The Lady of the Shroud (1909) et The Lair of the White Worm (1911). Dans ces textes, la transgression est incarnée par la femme hystérique, la mère monstrueuse, la femme exotique et la New Woman. De plus, le traitement de ces stéréotypes féminins révèle une certaine tolérance envers la dissension féminine chez l’auteur. Souvent perçu comme un écrivain conservateur, Stoker est plutôt qualifié de progressiste dans cette thèse. L’inclusion de personnages féminins forts et déterminés à travers ses romans ainsi que ses rapports avec plusieurs féministes et proto-féministes dans sa vie privée témoignent de sa libéralité envers les femmes. Sa largeur d’esprit semble d’ailleurs évoluer tout au long de sa carrière ainsi qu’avec la progression du mouvement suffragiste britannique, une période mouvante à la fin du dix-neuvième et au début du vingtième siècle.

The dark side of the Mediterranean : expression of fear from the inquisition to the present

Inside the stones of its most famous buildings, Évora keeps mysteries and secrets which constitute the most hidden side of its cultural identity. A World Heritage site, this town seems to preserve, in its medieval walls, a precious knowledge of the most universal and ancient human emotion: fear. Trying to transcend many of its past and future fears, some of its historical monuments in Gothic style were erected against the fear of death, the most terrible of all fears, which the famous inscription, in the Bones Chapel of the Church of São Francisco, insistently reminds us, through the most disturbing words: “Nós ossos que aqui estamos pelos vossos esperamos”. If the first inquisitors worked in central Europe (Germany, northern Italy, eastern France), later the centres of the Inquisition were established in the Mediterranean regions, especially southern France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain. Consequently, the roots of fear in Évora are common to other towns, where the Inquisition developed a culture of fear, through which we can penetrate into the dark side of the Mediterranean, where people were subjected to the same terrifying methods of persecution and torture. This common geographical and historical context was not ignored by one of the most famous masters of American gothic fiction, Edgar Allan Poe. Through the pages of The Pit and the Pendulum, readers get precise images of the fearful instruments of terror that were able to produce the legend that has made the first grand inquisitor, Tomas de Torquemada, a symbol of ultimate cruelty, bigotry, intolerance, and religious fanaticism, which unfortunately are still the source of our present fears in a time when religious beliefs can be used again as a motif of war and destruction. As Krishnamurti once suggested, only a fundamental realization of the root of all fear can free our minds.
