Examination of the lateral line canals in the Epaulette Shark reveals a much more differentiated sensory system than previously reported from any elasmobranch. Two main types of lateral line canals are found. In one type rounded patches of sensory epithelia are separated by elevations of the canal floor. The other type is a straight canal without restrictions and with an almost continuous sensory epithelium. In addition, we found epithelia (type A) with very long apical microvilli on the supporting cells. These microvilli reach beyond the stereovilli of the hair cells. Another type (B) of sensory epithelium has short microvilli on the supporting cells. In this latter type of epithelium the stereovilli of the hair cells are comparatively tall and reach out beyond the supporting cell microvilli. New hair cells are found widely in both types of sensory epithelia. These always occur as single cells, unlike those described in teleost lateral line canal sensory epithelia where new hair cells seem to form in pairs. Dying hair cells are also widespread, indicating a continuous turnover of hair cells.

This paper reports an investigation into the antecedents of commitment in non-Western industrial marketing relationships. The authors draw the antecedents from extant literature and posit that commitment is related to trust (integrity and reliability), communication quality, conflict, and similarity (social, ethnic, and economic). It is further argued that trust mediates the effects of communication, conflict, and similarity on commitment. As an extension, the authors examine the moderating effects of normative contracts (an implicit understanding of roles and responsibilities) on the construct interrelationships. The hypotheses are tested using data collected from approximately 150 industrial marketing relationships sampled from overseas Chinese firms. The results generally support the authors' framework; however, the mediating hypotheses are not supported. There is evidence of systematic differences in the effects of the studied antecedents on commitment and trust. Furthermore, a multigroup analysis provides evidence of significant moderating effects due to contracting mode. The study provides new insights into the theory and practice of industrial marketing. Experimental infections were used to track the fate of the dorsal sensilla of Merizocotyle icopae (Monogenea: Monocotylidae) from nasal tissue of the shovelnose ray, Rhinobatos typus (Rhinobatidae). Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed that 3 types of uniciliate dorsal sensilla exist at different times in the development of the monogenean. Type 1 sensilla have little or no invagination where the cilium exits the distal end of the dendrite and possess a ring of epidermis surrounding the cilium distal to the invagination. Type 2 sensilla have a deep invagination where the cilium exits the dendrite. Type 3 sensilla can be distinguished from the other types by the shape of the dendrite. The larvae have predominantly Type I dorsal sensilla, most of which are lost approximately 24 h after infection and a few Type 2 sensilla, which are retained. Additional Type 2 sensilla (termed Adult Type 2 sensilla), which are slightly different morphologically from the Type 2 sensilla of the larvae, form in later stages of development. Numerous Type 3 sensilla are unique to the dorsal surface of adults. Loss of all Type I sensilla upon attachment to the host, R. typus, suggests that these may be chemo- or mechanoreceptors responsible for host location by the swimming infective larvae. Type 2 sensilla appear to be important in the larvae, juveniles, and adults whereas the modality mediated by Type 3 is specific to adults. (C) 2003 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Recent studies have revealed regional variation in the density and distribution of inhibitory neurons in different cortical areas, which are thought to reflect area-specific specializations in cortical circuitry. However, there are as yet few standardized quantitative data regarding how the inhibitory circuitry in prefrontal cortex (PFC), which is thought to be involved in executive functions such as cognition, emotion and decision making, compares to that in other cortical areas. Here we used immunohistochemical techniques to determine the density and distribution of parvalbumin (PV)-, calbindin (CB)-, and calretinin (CR)-immunoreactive (ir) neurons and axon terminals in the dorsolateral and orbital PFC of the owl monkey (Aotus trivirgatus), and compared them directly with data obtained using the same techniques in 11 different visual, somatosensory and motor areas. We found marked differences in the density of PV-ir, CB-ir, and CR-ir interneurons in several cortical areas. One hundred and twenty eight of all 234 possible between-area pairwise comparisons were significantly different. The density of specific subpopulations of these cells also varied among cortical areas, as did the density of axon terminals. Comparison of PFC with other cortical areas revealed that 40 of all 66 possible statistical comparisons of the density of PV-ir, CB-ir, and CR-ir cells were significantly different. We also found evidence for heterogeneity in the pattern of labeling of PV-ir, CB-ir, and CR-ir cells and axon terminals between the dorsolateral and orbital subdivisions of PFC. These data are likely to reflect basic differences in interneuron circuitry, which are likely to influence inhibitory function in the cortex. Copyright (C) 2003 S. Karger AG, Basel.

As perdas pós-colheita de frutas promovem a elevação do custo dos produtos e diminuem a oferta ao consumidor. Suas principais causas estão na colheita, transporte e armazenamento inadequados. A aplicação de revestimentos comestíveis juntamente com a redução da temperatura de armazenamento constitui um dos métodos empregados para a conservação pós-colheita de produtos com vida útil curta, como frutas e hortaliças. O morango é um fruto consumido preferencialmente in natura. Desta forma, torna-se promissora a utilização de revestimento comestível para aumentar seu período de armazenamento e comercialização, sem alteração do sabor, da cor e do aroma dos frutos. A produção orgânica frente a convencional de frutos podem apresentar diferenças, sendo interessante o estudo envolvendo as formas de cultivo. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a conservação pós-colheita de morangos cv. Camarosa, oriundos de cultivo orgânico e convencional revestidos com coberturas comestíveis. Os morangos foram revestidos com fécula de mandioca, gelatina e cera de carnaúba, armazenados durante 10 dias a 10 ºC. A cada 2 dias de armazenamento foram determinados perda de massa, sólidos solúveis, pH, acidez titulável, firmeza, antocianinas totais e podridão fúngica. Análise sensorial foi realizada para verificar a aceitação dos morangos e para avaliar a influência da informação nesta aceitação. A perda de massa foi maior no cultivo orgânico a partir do 8º dia de armazenamento, chegando a 11,47% contra 8,88% do cultivo convencional no final do 10º dia de armazenamento. O revestimento que possibilitou menor perda de massa foi o de cera de carnaúba em relação ao controle. A contaminação fúngica iniciou-se no 4º dia de armazenamento em ambos os tipos de cultivo. No 8º dia de armazenamento observou-se diferenças na podridão entre os tipos de cultivo, sendo o orgânico visualmente mais contaminado. O revestimento de cera de carnaúba apresentou menor podridão fúngica em relação aos outros revestimentos, porém não diferiu da amostra controle. Das variáveis físico-químicas avaliadas, apenas o teor de sólidos solúveis apresentou diferenças entre os tipos de cultivo, sendo o morango convencional o que obteve maiores valores. O teor de antocianinas dos morangos revestidos com fécula de mandioca diferiu do controle, porém o revestimento com fécula não diferiu dos revestidos com gelatina e cera de carnaúba. Foram verificadas diferenças na firmeza dos frutos em relação aos revestimentos. Ao longo do tempo foi observado diferenças no pH, teor de antocianinas e firmeza. O revestimento com cera de carnaúba se mostrou mais adequado em relação aos demais revestimentos, porém sua aparência mostrou-se com pouco brilho e esbranquiçado. Os frutos avaliados apresentaram vida útil pós-colheita de aproximadamente 6 dias. Os morangos, do ponto de vista microbiológico, se mostraram aptos para consumo. A aceitação dos morangos foi boa, não tendo ix diferenças significativas entre morango orgânico e convencional. O fornecimento da informação de “morango orgânico” e a apresentação de um texto adicional informativo não influenciaram na aceitação dos morangos. Entre os revestimentos testados o de cera de carnaúba se mostrou mais aplicável, os demais nas condições testadas não mostraram bons resultados.

Phenolic compounds have been extensively studied in recent years. The presence of these compounds in various foods has been associated with sensory and health promoting properties. These products from the secondary metabolism of plants act as defense mechanisms against environmental stress and attack by other organisms. They are divided into different classes according to their chemical structures. The objective of this study was to describe the different classes of phenolic compounds, the main food sources and factors of variation, besides methods for the identification and quantification commonly used to analyze these compounds. Moreover, the role of phenolic compounds in scavenging oxidative stress and the techniques of in vitro antioxidant evaluation are discussed. In vivo studies to evaluate the biological effects of these compounds and their impact on chronic disease prevention are presented as well. Finally, it was discussed the role of these compounds on the sensory quality of foods.
