With the assignment of the head of the fisheries economics working group at the Institute of Sea Fisheries three from four envisioned positions are now filled. Responsibilities will range from data collection and processing to bio-economic modeling, value adding of the fishing sector, and the assessment of economic consequences of climate change. This also includes general advisory responsibilities on the national and international level.

The economic situation of the German fishing fleet, economic indicators and backgrounds have been analysed in the overall framework of the EU-Concerted Action ‘Economic Assessment of European fishing fleets’. Trends in number of vessels, employment on board and catches for main target species are decreasing. This development may clearly be related to bad fish stock conditions, missing investment op-portunities for vessels and the short-term fishing quota man-agement system. To facilitate fisheries economics research a better data collection system is needed. As a consequence economic advice may be given for the development of a long-term sustainable management system.

Die 26. Sitzung des Codex-Alimentarius-Komitees für Fische und Fischerzeugnisse fand vom 13. bis 17.Oktober 2003 in Aales und, Norwegen, statt. Die Tagung wurde von 130 Delegierten und Beobachtern aus 47 Mitgliedsstaaten und 5 internationalen Organisationen besucht. Die größten Delegationen stellten Deutschland(7), Thailand (7), Japan (8), USA (11) und Norwegen als Gastgeber (14). Die deutsche Delegation wurde von Dr. Markus Brill (BMVEL) geleitet. Weitere Mitgliederwaren Prof. Jörg Oehlenschläger (BFAFi, Sprecher), Dr. Kristina Ravelhofer-Rotheneder (BMVEL), Dr. Reinhard Schubring (BFAFi), Dr. Mathias Keller (Bundesmarktverband der deutschen Fischindustrie und des Fischgroßhandels e.V.), Petra Weigl (Pickenpack-Hussmann und Hahn Seafood GmbH) und Dr. Ralf Peter Pund (BfR). Die Sitzung, die von Janne Johnson, Staatssekretärin im norwegischen Fischereiministerium, eröffnet wurde, leitete Dr. Bjørn Rothe Knudtsen, Regionaldirektor des norwegischen Direktorats für Fischerei und Aquakultur, Trondheim.

At present, there is practically no research on fisheries economics in Germany. Due to special interest of a research assistant in the field of land economics at the Institute of Botany of the University of Greifswald two projects on fisheries economics are being carried out, and a Ph. D. thesis on this topic has been finished. Basically two levels must be distinguished: business level and economics. Business economics relate mainly to operational and market analysis, but also to consequences of political measures for a single company. Economical considerations relate to long-term measures. It is important to find a compromise between short-term economical success and stable long-term conditions for the fishery.

The current approval procedure for wind farm proposals in the German EEZ only considers site specific conflict analysis between the wind farm and fisheries. Due to the relatively small spatial coverage of single sites potential opportunity losses to the fisheries are always considered as low or negligible. Cumulative effects on fisheries that will occur once all proposed wind farms are in place are not yet considered adequately. However, those cumulative effects will be quite substantial because, in particular, opportunities to catch such valuable species as flatfish will be considerably reduced.

The role dopamine plays in decision-making has important theoretical, empirical and clinical implications. Here, we examined its precise contribution by exploiting the lesion deficit model afforded by Parkinson's disease. We studied patients in a two-stage reinforcement learning task, while they were ON and OFF dopamine replacement medication. Contrary to expectation, we found that dopaminergic drug state (ON or OFF) did not impact learning. Instead, the critical factor was drug state during the performance phase, with patients ON medication choosing correctly significantly more frequently than those OFF medication. This effect was independent of drug state during initial learning and appears to reflect a facilitation of generalization for learnt information. This inference is bolstered by our observation that neural activity in nucleus accumbens and ventromedial prefrontal cortex, measured during simultaneously acquired functional magnetic resonance imaging, represented learnt stimulus values during performance. This effect was expressed solely during the ON state with activity in these regions correlating with better performance. Our data indicate that dopamine modulation of nucleus accumbens and ventromedial prefrontal cortex exerts a specific effect on choice behaviour distinct from pure learning. The findings are in keeping with the substantial other evidence that certain aspects of learning are unaffected by dopamine lesions or depletion, and that dopamine plays a key role in performance that may be distinct from its role in learning.

Testate amoebae are an important and abundant component of aquatic ecosystems. Our knowledge of their distribution and the species inventory in Asia is still limited. This paper describes a new planktonic Difflugia from Lake Mulan, province of Hubei, China. These findings are of taxonomic, as well as biogeographic significance because Difflugia mulanensis nov. spec. is a rare and perhaps the only locally distributed member of the well-known urceolate division within this most species-rich genus of lobose testate amoebae. We have studied its morphology and biometry with light and scanning electron microscopical methods. D. mulanensis differs from related species by its very large wide funnel-shaped apertural collar which normally exceeds the width of the test, a relatively long neck, its rounded apical end and the presence of only one nucleus. All shell parameters are normally distributed with low variability. Only the collar height is more variable. This shows that D. mulanensis is a size-monomorphic species. (c) 2005 Elsevier GrnbH. We have investigated the domain wall resistance for two types of domain walls in a (Ga,Mn)As Hall bar with perpendicular magnetization. A sizeable positive intrinsic DWR is inferred for domain walls that are pinned at an etching step, which is quite consistent with earlier observations. However, much lower intrinsic domain wall resistance is obtained when domain walls are formed by pinning lines in unetched material. This indicates that the spin transport across a domain wall is strongly influenced by the nature of the pinning.

We measured delta C-13 of CO2, CH4, and acetate-methyl in profundal sediment of eutrophic Lake Dagow by incubation experiments in the presence and absence of methanogenic inhibitors chloroform, bromoethane sulfonate (BES), and methyl fluoride, which have different specificities. Methyl fluoride predominantly inhibits acetoclastic methanogenesis and affects hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis relatively little. Optimization of methyl fluoride concentrations resulted in complete inhibition of acetoclastic methanogenesis. Methane was then exclusively produced by hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis and thus allowed determination of the fractionation factors specific for this methanogenic pathway. Acetate, which was then no longer consumed, accumulated and allowed determination of the isotopic signatures of the fermentatively produced acetate. BES and chloroform also inhibited CH4 production and resulted in accumulation of acetate. The fractionation factor for hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis exhibited variability, e. g., it changed with sediment depth. The delta C-13 of the methyl group of the accumulated acetate was similar to the delta C-13 of sedimentary organic carbon, while that of the carboxyl group was by about 12 parts per thousand higher. However, the delta C-13 of the acetate was by about 5 parts per thousand lower in samples with uninhibited compared with inhibited acetoclastic methanogenesis, indicating unusual isotopic fractionation. The isotope data were used for calculation of the relative contribution of hydrogenotrophic vs. acetoclastic methanogenesis to total CH4 production. Contribution of hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis increased with sediment depth from about 35% to 60%, indicating that organic matter was only partially oxidized in deeper sediment layers.

We present a dynamic distributed load balancing algorithm for parallel, adaptive Finite Element simulations in which we use preconditioned Conjugate Gradient solvers based on domain-decomposition. The load balancing is designed to maintain good partition aspect ratio and we show that cut size is not always the appropriate measure in load balancing. Furthermore, we attempt to answer the question why the aspect ratio of partitions plays an important role for certain solvers. We define and rate different kinds of aspect ratio and present a new center-based partitioning method of calculating the initial distribution which implicitly optimizes this measure. During the adaptive simulation, the load balancer calculates a balancing flow using different versions of the diffusion algorithm and a variant of breadth first search. Elements to be migrated are chosen according to a cost function aiming at the optimization of subdomain shapes. Experimental results for Bramble's preconditioner and comparisons to state-of-the-art load balancers show the benefits of the construction.
