This case study represents four years of audiological observations, testing and aural habilitation of a female child with a partial agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC). The ACC was diagnosed by MRI scans to eliminate neurological causes for developmental delay at six months of age. This child was also born with a cleft palate and was diagnosed with Robinow Syndrome at 3 years and 3 months of age. The audiological results showed an improvement in hearing thresholds over the four-year period. The child’s opthamologist also reported an improvement in visual skills over time. The most interesting aspect of the child’s hearing was the discrepancy between the monaural and the binaural results. That is, when assessed binaurally she often presented with a mild to moderate mixed loss and when assessed monaurally she showed a moderate to severe mixed loss for the right ear and a severe mixed loss for the left ear. This discrepancy between binaural and monaural results was evident for both aided and unaided tests. Parental reports of the child’s hearing were consistent with the binaural clinical results. This case indicates the need for audiologists to: (a) carefully monitor the hearing of children with ACC, (b) obtain monaural and binaural hearing and aided thresholds results, and (c) compare these children’s functional abilities to the objective test results obtained. This case does question whether hearing aids are appropriate for children with ACC. If hearing aids are deemed to be appropriate, then hearing aids with compression characteristics should be considered.

Over time, the discrepancy between the monaural and binaural results changed. When assessed binaurally, the loss decreased to normal low frequency hearing sloping to a mild high frequency loss. When assessed monaurally, the most recent results showed a mild loss for the right ear and a moderate loss for the left ear. This discrepancy between binaural and monaural results was evident for both aided and unaided tests. For the most recent thresholds, the binaural results were consistent with the right monaural thresholds for the first time over the four and a half years. Parental reports of the child’s hearing were consistent with the binaural clinical results. This case indicates the need for audiologists to (1) carefully monitor the hearing of children with ACC, (2) obtain monaural and binaural hearing and aided thresholds results, and (3) compare these children’s functional abilities with the objective test results obtained. This case does question whether hearing aids are appropriate for children with ACC. Subtractive imaging in confocal fluorescence light microscopy is based on the subtraction of a suitably weighted widefield image from a confocal image. An approximation to a widefield image can be obtained by detection with an opened confocal pinhole. The subtraction of images enhances the resolution in-plane as well as along the optic axis. Due to the linearity of the approach, the effect of subtractive imaging in Fourier-space corresponds to a reduction of low spatial frequency contributions leading to a relative enhancement of the high frequencies. Along the direction of the optic axis this also results in an improved sectioning. Image processing can achieve a similar effect. However, a 3D volume dataset must be acquired and processed, yielding a result essentially identical to subtractive imaging but superior in signal-to-noise ratio. The latter can be increased further with the technique of weighted averaging in Fourier-space. A comparison of 2D and 3D experimental data analysed with subtractive imaging, the equivalent Fourier-space processing of the confocal data only, and Fourier-space weighted averaging is presented. Este trabalho ganha corpo a partir das experiências do antropólogo Carlos Castaneda. Além de ponto de partida para pensar as questões relativas ao corpo, o movimento e aprendizagem, as obras A Erva do diabo, Uma estranha realidade e Porta para o infinito, do autor mencionado, comparecem aqui para 1) investigarmos os relatos de experiência; 2) apresentarmos alguns conceitos-chaves, relativos a aprendizagem da “feitiçaria”, tal como a vontade. Vale frisar que nosso interesse na obra de Castaneda, não está nas questões místicas do xamanismo, nem mesmo nos pontos relativos ao campo da antropologia, mas na questão da aprendizagem. Para Dom Juan, o vellho índio feiticeiro e principal mestre de Carlos Castaneda, o propósito final do aprendizado da feitiçaria é justamente tornar-se um homem de conhecimento. Com o objetivo de analisar o lugar do movimento e do corpo no processo de aprendizagem, faremos o seguinte percurso analítico: de Skinner e Piaget abordaremos respectivamente a aprendizagem do comportamento operante e a aprendizagem em sentido amplo. Em seguida, apresentamos o pensamento de Francisco Varela e Bruno Latour, principalmente os conceitos de enação, corpos articulados e aprendizagem por afetação. Com Vincianne Despret discutiremos o aspecto afectivo, corporal e involuntário da aprendizagem. Com este apanhado conceitual, visamos então colocar em análise os efeitos ético-políticos dos modos de produção de conhecimento, efeitos irremediavelmente neste corpo-dissertação, e mais ainda efeitos na vida. Por fim, ao que parece, as modulações nos conceitos de corpo, movimento/ação, ao longo da exposição dos autores indicaram, por vezes, a participação de outros elementos, tais como a vontade e a percepção-atenção, implicando variações na forma de conceber a aprendizagem. Percebemos que de acordo com a formulação de aprendizagem e as nuances do movimento/ação e do corpo, isto implica produções diferenciadas de conhecimento e de realidade.

Passage of malaria infected blood through a two-layered column composed of acid-washed glass beads and CF 11 cellulose removes white cells from parasitized blood. However, because use of glass beads and CF 11 cellulose requires filtration of infected blood separately through these two resins and the addition of ADP, the procedure is time-consuming and may be inapropriate for use in the field, especially when large numbers of blood samples are to be treated. Our modification of this process yields parasitized cells free of contaminating leukocytes, and because of its operational simplicity, large numbers of blood samples can be processed. Our procedure also compares well with those using expensive commercial Sepacell resins in its ability to separate leukocytes from whole blood. As a test of usefulness in molecular biologic investigations, the parasites obtained from the blood of malaria-infected patients using the modified procedure yield genomic DNA whose single copy gene, the circumsporozite gene, efficiently amplifies by polymerase chain reaction.

To compare the effect of hyperthermia on maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) in men and women, VO2max was measured in 11 male and 11 female runners under seven conditions involving various ambient temperatures (Ta at 50% RH) and preheating designed to manipulate the esophageal (Tes) and mean skin (Tsk) temperatures at VO2max. The conditions were: 25 degrees C, no preheating (control); 25, 35, 40, and 45 degrees C, with exercise-induced preheating by a 20-min walk at approximately 33% of control VO2max; 45 degrees C, no preheating; and 45 degrees C, with passive preheating during which Tes and Tsk were increased to the same degree as at the end of the 20-min walk at 45 degrees C. Compared to VO2max (l x min(-1)) in the control condition (4.52+/-0.46 in men, 3.01+/-0.45 in women), VO2max in men and women was reduced with exercise-induced or passive preheating and increased Ta, approximately 4% at 35 degrees C, approximately 9% at 40 degrees C and approximately 18% at 45 degrees C. Percentage reductions (7-36%) in physical performance (treadmill test time to exhaustion) were strongly related to reductions in VO2max (r=0.82-0.84). The effects of hyperthermia on VO2max and physical performance in men and women were almost identical. We conclude that men and women do not differ in their thermal responses to maximal exercise, or in the relationship of hyperthermia to reductions in VO2max and physical performance at high temperature. We tested the hypothesis that elevation in heart rate (HR) during submaximal exercise in the heat is related, in part, to increased percentage of maximal O(2) uptake (%Vo(2 max)) utilized due to reduced maximal O(2) uptake (Vo(2 max)) measured after exercise under the same thermal conditions. Peak O(2) uptake (Vo(2 peak)), O(2) uptake, and HR during submaximal exercise were measured in 22 male and female runners under four environmental conditions designed to manipulate HR during submaximal exercise and Vo(2 peak). The conditions involved walking for 20 min at approximately 33% of control Vo(2 max) in 25, 35, 40, and 45 degrees C followed immediately by measurement of Vo(2 peak) in the same thermal environment. Vo(2 peak) decreased progressively (3.77 +/- 0.19, 3.61 +/- 0.18, 3.44 +/- 0.17, and 3.13 +/- 0.16 l/min) and HR at the end of the submaximal exercise increased progressively (107 +/- 2, 112 +/- 2, 120 +/- 2, and 137 +/- 2 beats/min) with increasing ambient temperature (T(a)). HR and %Vo(2 peak) increased in an identical fashion with increasing T(a). We conclude that elevation in HR during submaximal exercise in the heat is related, in part, to the increase in %Vo(2 peak) utilized, which is caused by reduced Vo(2 peak) measured during exercise in the heat. At high T(a), the dissociation of HR from %Vo(2 peak) measured after sustained submaximal exercise is less than if Vo(2 max) is assumed to be unchanged during exercise in the heat.

A new 'Consent Commons' licensing framework is proposed, complementing Creative Commons, to clarify the permissions given for using and reusing clinical and non-clinical digital recordings of people (patients and non-patients) for educational purposes. Consent Commons is a sophisticated expression of ethically based 'digital professionalism', which recognises the rights of patients, carers, their families, teachers, clinicians, students and members of the public to have some say in how their digital recordings are used (including refusing or withdrawing their consent), and is necessary in order to ensure the long term sustainability of teaching materials, including Open Educational Resources (OER). Consent Commons can ameliorate uncertainty about the status of educational resources depicting people, and protect institutions from legal risk by developing robust and sophisticated policies and promoting best practice in managing their information.

Genome sequences for Schistosoma japonicum and Schistosoma mansoni are now available. The schistosome genome encodes ~13,000 protein encoding genes for which the function of only a minority is understood. There is a valuable role for transgenesis in functional genomic investigations of these new schistosome gene sequences. In gain-of-function approaches, transgenesis can lead to integration of transgenes into the schistosome genome which can facilitate insertional mutagenesis screens. By contrast, transgene driven, vector-based RNA interference (RNAi) offers powerful loss-of-function manipulations. Our laboratory has focused on development of tools to facilitate schistosome transgenesis. We have investigated the utility of retroviruses and transposons to transduce schistosomes. Vesicular stomatitis virus glycoprotein (VSVG) pseudotyped murine leukemia virus (MLV) can transduce developmental stages of S. mansoni including eggs. We have also observed that the piggyBac transposon is transpositionally active in schistosomes. Approaches with both VSVG-MLV and piggyBac have resulted in somatic transgenesis and have lead to integration of active reporter transgenes into schistosome chromosomes. These findings provided the first reports of integration of reporter transgenes into schistosome chromosomes. Experience with these systems is reviewed herewith, along with findings with transgene mediated RNAi and germ line transgenesis, in addition to pioneering and earlier reports of gene manipulation for schistosomes.

The k-symplectic formulation of field theories is especially simple, since only tangent and cotangent bundles are needed in its description. Its defining elements show a close relationship with those in the symplectic formulation of mechanics. It will be shown that this relationship also stands in the presymplectic case. In a natural way,one can mimick the presymplectic constraint algorithm to obtain a constraint algorithmthat can be applied to k-presymplectic field theory, and more particularly to the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations offield theories defined by a singular Lagrangian, as well as to the unified Lagrangian-Hamiltonian formalism (Skinner--Rusk formalism) for k-presymplectic field theory. Two examples of application of the algorithm are also analyzed.

Ways to enhance research into coping have been suggested by Lazarus (2000). The issues of adaptiveness and conceptual structure of coping (Cramer, 1998; Skinner et al., 2003) are particularly relevant; thus, this study addresses them in a clinical research setting. A total of 30 inpatients presenting with Bipolar Affective Disorder (BD) have been interviewed twice, as well as the participants of a matched control group (N = 30). Self-report (CISS) and observerrater methods (CAP) of coping have been applied: low correlations were found between the instruments. Coping specificities in BD have been identified: opposition and support-seeking are most frequently practiced by BD patients, in comparison with controls. No significant link has been found between coping processes, symptom level and the therapeutic alliance. This study lends support for a quantitative definition of coping adaptiveness which is discussed, along with clinical implications on psychological treatments of BD (German J Psychiatry 2009; 12: 19-27).
