A capillary electrochromatography (CEC) monolithic column with zwitterionic stationary phases was prepared by in situ polymerization of butyl methacrylate, ethylene dimethacrylate, methacrylic acid, and 2-(dimethyl amino) ethyl methacrylate in the presence of porogens. The stationary phases have zwitterionic functional groups, that is, both tertiary amine and acrylic acid groups, so the ionization of those groups on the zwitterionic stationary phase was affected by the pH values of the mobile phase, and further affects the strength and direction of the electroosmotic flow (EOF). Separations of alkylbenzenes and polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons based on the hydrophobic mechanism were obtained. Separation of various types of polar compounds, including phenols, anilines, and peptides, on the prepared column were performed under CEC mode with anodic and cathodic EOF, and different separation selectivities of those polar analytes were observed on the monolithic capillary column by using mobile phases with different pH values.

The surface properties, porosities, and adsorption capacities of activated carbons (AC) are modified by the oxidation treatment using concentrated H2SO4 at temperatures 150-270 degreesC. The modified AC was characterized by N-2 adsorption, base titration, FTIR, and the adsorption of iodine, chlorophenol, methylene blue, and dibenzothiophene. The treatment of AC with concentrated H2SO4 at 250 degreesC greatly increases the mesoporous volume from 0.243 mL/g to 0.452 mL/g, specific surface areas from 393 m(2)/g to 745 m(2)/g, and acidic surface oxygen complexes from 0.071 meq/g to 1.986 meq/g as compared with the unmodified AC. The base titration results indicate that the amount of acidic surface oxygen groups on the modified AC increases with increasing the treatment temperatures and carboxyls and phenols are the most abundant carbon-oxygen functional groups. The carboxyl groups, COO- species, and hydroxyl groups are detected mainly for the sample treated at 250 degreesC. The mesoporous properties of the AC modified by concentrated H2SO4 were further tested by the adsorption of methylene blue and dibenzothiophene. The AC modified by concentrated H2SO4 at 250 degreesC has much higher adsorption capacities for large molecules (e.g., methylene blue and dibenzothiophene) than the unmodified AC but less adsorption capacities for small molecules (e.g., iodine). The adsorption results from aqueous solutions have been interpreted using Freundlich adsorption models.

An efficient O-arylation of phenols and aliphatic alcohols with aryl halides was developed that uses an air-stable copper(I) complex as the catalyst. This arylation reaction can be performed in good yield in the absence of Cs2CO3. A variety of functional groups are compatible with these reaction conditions with low catalyst loading levels.

A novel diamine, 1,4-bis [3-oxy-(N-aminophthalimide)] benzene (BOAPIB), was synthesized from 1,4-bis [3-oxy-(N-phenylphthalimide)] benzene and hydrazine. Its structure was determined via IR, H-1 NMR, and elemental analysis. A series of five-member ring, hydrazine-based polyimides were prepared from this diamine and various aromatic dianhydrides via one-step polycondensation in p-chlorophenol. The inherent viscosities of these polyimides were in the range of 0.17-0.61 dL/g. These polymers were soluble in polar aprotic solvents and phenols at room temperature. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the 5% weight-loss temperatures of the polyimides were near 450 degrees C in air and 500 degrees C in nitrogen. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) indicated that the glass-transition temperatures (T(g)s) of these polymers were in the range of 265-360 degrees C. The wide-angle X-ray diffraction showed that all the polyimides were amorphous.

Alkane elimination reactions of amino-amino-bis(phenols) H2L1-4, Salan H2L5, and methoxy-beta-diimines HL6,7 with lanthanide tris(alkyl) s, Ln(CH2SiMe3)(3)(THF)(2) (Ln = Y, Lu), respectively, afforded a series of lanthanide alkyl complexes 1-8 with the release of tetramethylsilane. Complexes 1-6 are THF-solvated mono( alkyl) s stabilized by O, N, N, O-tetradentate ligands. Complexes 1-3 and 5 adopt twisted octahedral geometry, whereas 4 contains a tetragonal bipyramidal core. Bearing a monoanionic moiety L-6 (L-7), complex 7 ( 8) is a THF-free bis(alkyl). In complex 7, the O, N, N-tridentate ligand combined with two alkyl species forms a tetrahedral coordination core. Complexes 1, 2, and 3 displayed modest activity but high stereoselectivity for the polymerization of rac-lactide to give heterotactic polylactide with the racemic enchainment of monomer units P-r ranging from 0.95 to 0.99, the highest value reached to date. Complex 5 exhibited almost the same level of activity albeit with relatively low selectivity. In contrast, dramatic decreases in activity and stereoselectivity were found for complex 4. The Salan yttrium alkyl complex 6 was active but nonselective. Bis(alkyl) complexes 7 and 8 were more active than 1-3 toward polymerization of rac-LA, however, to afford atactic polylactides due to di-active sites. The ligand framework, especially the "bridge" between the two nitrogen atoms, played a significant role in governing the selectivity of the corresponding complexes via changing the geometry of the metal center.

Treatment of yttrium tris(alkyl)s, Y(CH2SiMe3)(3)(THF)(2), by equimolar H(C5Me4)SiMe3(HCp') and indene (Ind-H) afforded (eta(5)-Cp')Y(CH2SiMe3)(2)(THF) (1) and (eta(5)-Ind)Y(CH2SiMe3)(2)(THF) (2) via alkane elimination, respectively. Complex 1 reacted with methoxyamino phenols, 4,6-(CH3)(2)-2-[(MeOCH2CH2)(2)-NCH2]-C6H2-OH (HL1) and 4,6-(CMe3)(2)-2-[(MeOCH2CH2)(2)-NCH2]-C6H2OH (HL2) gave mixed ligands supported alkyl complexes [(eta(5)-Cp')(L)]Y(CH2SiMe3) (3: L = L-1; 4: L = L-2). Whilst, complex 2 was treated with HL2 to yield [(eta(5)-Ind)(L-2)]Y(CH2SiMe3) (5). The molecular structures of 3 and 5 were confirmed by X-ray diffraction to be mono(alkyl)s of THF-free, adopting pyramidal and tetragonal-bipyramidal geometry, respectively. Complexes 3 and 5 were high active initiators for the ring-opening polymerization Of L-lactide to give isotactic polylactide with high molecular weight and narrow to moderate polydispersity.

3,3-Dichloro-N,N'-biphthalimide (3,3'-DCBPI), 3,4'-dichloro-N,N'-biphthalimide (3,4'-DCBPI), and 4,4'-dichloro-N,N'X-biphthalimide (4,4'-DCBPI) were synthesized from 3- or 4-chlorophthalic anhydrides and hydrazine in glacial acetic acid. The yield of 3,3'-DCBPI (90%) was much higher than that of 4,4'-DCBPI (33%) because of the better stability of the intermediate, 3-chloro-N-aminophthalimide, and 3,3'-DCBPI. A series of hydrazine-based polyimides were prepared from isomeric DCBPIs and 4,4-thiobisbenzenethiol (TBBT) in N,N-dimethylacetamide in the presence of tributylamine. Inherent viscosity of these polymers was in the range of 0.51-0.69 dL/g in 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP) at 30 degrees C. These polyimides were soluble in 1,1,2,2-terachloroethane, NMP, and phenols. The 5% weight-loss temperatures (T(g)s) of the polymers were near 450 degrees C in N-2. Their glass-transition temperatures (T(g)s) determined by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and differential scanning calorimetry increased according to the order of polyimides based on 4,4'-DCBPI, 3,4'-DCBPI, and 3,3'-DCBPI. The hydrolytic stability of these polymers was measured under acid, basic, and neutral conditions and the results indicated that the order was 3,3'-DCBPI/TBBT > 3,4'-DCBPI/TBBT > 4,4'-DCBPI/TBBT.

In order to clarify the effects of phenols on properties of polyesters, the blends of poly[(3-hydroxybutyrate)-co-(3-hydroxyvalerate)] (PHBV) with 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenylpropane (BPA) and p-tert-butylphenol (TBP) were studied. The FTIR spectra revealed that there was strong hydrogen-bond (H-bond) interaction between PHBV and both phenols. By evaluating the fraction of H-bonded C = O in the blend, it was concluded that BPA showed a stronger tendency than TBP to form H-bonds with PHBV. Accordingly, BPA formed a stronger suppression than TBP on the crystallization of PHBV. When 30 wt% BPA or 50 wt% TBP were added into PHBV, the crystallization of PHBV was completely suppressed in the DSC cooling scan. As the phenol content was increased, the T-g of PHBV/TBP blend decreased while the T-g of PHBV/BPA blend increased. This difference indicated that TBP and BPA acted as plasticizer and physical crosslinking agent, respectively.

A novel diamine, 3,3'-bis(N-aminophthalimide) (BAPI), was prepared from 3,3'-bis(N-phenylphthalimide). Its structure was determined via IR, H-1 NMR, N-15 NMR, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. A series of homo- and copolyimides were synthesized by a conventional one-step method in p-chlorophenol. The characteristic IR absorption bands of hydrazine-based imide groups were near 1780, 1750, 1350, 1100, and 730 cm(-1). The polymers showed good solubility in polar aprotic solvents and phenols at room temperature. The temperatures of 5% weight loss (T-5%) of the polyimides ranged from 495 to 530 degrees C in air. DMTA analyses indicated that the glass-transition temperatures (Tgs) of the polyimides were in the range 371-432 degrees C. These polymers had cutoff wavelengths between 350 and 400 nm. The polyimide films of 6FDA/BAPI and 4,4'-HQPDA/BAPI were colorless; other films were pale yellow or yellow.

The carbon nanotubes-chitosan (CNTs-CS) composite provides a suitable biosensing matrix due to its good conductivity, high stability, and good biocompatibility. Enzymes can be firmly incorporated into the matrix without the aid of other cross-linking reagents. The composite is easy to form insoluble film in solution above pH 6.3. Based on this, a facilely fabricated amperometric biosensor by entrapping laccase into the CNTs-CS composite film has been developed. At pH 6.0, the fungi laccase incorporated into the composite film remains better catalytic activity than that dissolved in solution. The system is in favor of the accessibility of substrate to the active site of laccase, thus the affinity to substrates is improved greatly, such as 2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS), catechol, and 0, with K. values of 19.86 mu M, 9.43 mu M, and 3.22 mM, respectively. The major advantages of the as-prepared biosensor are: detecting different substrates (ABTS, catechol, and 02), possessing high affinity and sensitivity, durable long-term stability, and facile preparation procedure. On the other hand, the system can be applied in fabrication of biofuel cells as the cathodic catalysts based on its good electrocatalysis for oxygen reduction.

3,3',4,4'-Diphenylthioether dianhydride (4,4'-TDPA), 2,3,3',4'-diphenylthioether dianhydride (3,4'-TDPA), and 2,2',3,3-diphenylthioether dianhydride (3,3'TDPA) were synthesized from 3-chlorophthalic anhydride and 4-chlorophthalic anhydride. A series of polyimides derived from the isomeric diphenylthioether dianhydrides with several diamines were prepared. The properties, such as the solubility, thermal and mechanical behavior, dynamic mechanical behavior, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, and permeability to some gases, were compared among the isomeric polyimides. Both 3,3'-TDPA- and 3,4-TDPA-based polyimides had good solubility in polar aprotic solvents and phenols. The 5% weight loss temperatures of all the obtained polyimides was near 500 degrees C in nitrogen. The glass-transition temperatures decreased according to the order of the polyimides based on 3,3'-TDPA, 3,4'-TDPA, and 4,4'-TDPA. The 3,4'-TDPA-based polyimides had the best permeability and lowest permselectivity, whereas the 4,4'-TDPA-based polyimides had the highest permselectivity and the lowest permeability of the three isomers. Furthermore, the rheological properties of thermoplastic polyimide resins based on the isomeric dipbenylthioether dianhydrides were investigated, and they showed that polyimide 3,4'-TDPA/4,4-oxydianiline had the lowest melt viscosity among the isomers; this indicated that the melt processibility had been greatly improved.

An amperometric biosensor for monitoring phenols in the organic phase was constructed by the silica sol-gel immobilization of tyrosinase on a glassy carbon electrode. The organic-inorganic hybrid materials with different sol-gel precursors and polymers were optimized, and the experimental conditions, such as the effect of the solvent, operational potential and enzyme loading were explored for the optimum analytical performance of the enzyme electrode. The biosensor can reach 95% of steady-state current in about 18 s, and the trend in the sensitivity of different phenols is as follows: catechol > phenol >p-cresol. In addition, the apparent Michaelis-Menten constants (K-m(app)) and the stability of the enzyme electrode were discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

An amperometric tyrosinase enzyme electrode for the determination of phenols was developed by a simple and effective immobilization method using sol-gel techniques. A grafting copolymer was introduced into sol-gel solution and the composition of the resultant organic-inorganic composite material was optimized, the tyrosinase retained its activity in the sol-gel thin film and its response to several phenol compounds was determined at 0 mV vs. Ag/AgCl (sat. KCI). The dependences of the current response on pH, oxygen level and temperature were studied, and the stability of the biosensor was also evaluated. The sensitivity of the biosensor for catechol, phenol and p-cresol was 59.6, 23.1 and 39.4 muA/mM, respectively. The enzyme electrode maintained 73% of its original activity after intermittent use for three weeks when storing in a dry state at 4 degreesC. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
