ZnS1-xTex (0.02less than or equal toxless than or equal to0.3) alloys are studied by photoluminescence under hydrostatic pressure at room temperature. Only a wide emission band is observed for each sample. Its peak energy is much lower than the corresponding band gap of alloys. These bands are ascribed to the radiative annihilation of excitons bound at Te-n(ngreater than or equal to2) isoelectronic centers. The pressure coefficients of the emission bands are smaller than those of alloy band gaps from 48% to 7%. The difference of the pressure coefficient of the emission band and the band gap increases when the binding energy of Te-n centers decreases. It seems contrary to our expectation and needs further analysis. The integrated intensities of emission bands decrease with increasing pressure due to the decreasing of the absorption coefficient associated with the Te-n centers under pressure. According to this model the Stokes shifts between the emission and absorption bands of the Te-n centers are calculated, which decrease with the increasing Te composition in alloys.

Temperature and pressure dependent measurements have been performed on 3.5 nm ZnS:Mn2+ nanoparticles. As temperature increases, the donor-acceptor (DA) emission of ZnS:Mn2+ nanoparticles at 440 nm shifts to longer wavelengths while the Mn2+ emission (T-4(1)-(6)A(1)) shifts to shorter wavelengths. Both the DA and Mn2+ emission intensities decrease with temperature with the intensity decrease of the DA emission being much more pronounced. The intensity decreases are fit well with the theory of thermal quenching. As pressure increases, the Mn2+ emission shifts to longer wavelengths while the DA emission wavelength remains almost constant. The pressure coefficient of the DA emission in ZnS:Mn2+ nanoparticles is approximately -3.2 meV/GPa, which is significantly smaller than that measured for bulk materials. The relatively weak pressure dependence of the DA emission is attributed to the increase of the binding energies and the localization of the defect wave functions in nanoparticles. The pressure coefficient of Mn2+ emission in ZnS:Mn2+ nanoparticles is roughly -34.3 meV/GPa, consistent with crystal field theory. The results indicate that the energy transfer from the ZnS host to Mn2+ ions is mainly from the recombination of carriers localized at Mn2+ ions. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Optical spectra of CdSe nanocrystals are measured at room temperature under pressure ranging from 0 to 5.2 GPa. The exciton energies shift linearly with pressure below 5.2 GPa. The pressure coefficient is 27 meV GPa(-1) for small CdSe nanocrystals with the radius of 2.4 nm. With the approximation of a rigid-atomic pseudopotential, the pressure coefficients of the energy band are calculated. By using the hole effective-mass Hamiltonian for the semiconductors with wurtzite structure under various pressures, we study the exciton states and optical spectra for CdSe nanocrystals under hydrostatic pressure in detail. The intrinsic asymmetry of the hexagonal lattice structure and the effect of spin-orbit coupling on the hole states are investigated. The Coulomb interaction of the exciton states is also taken into account. It is found that the theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental values.

The pressure behaviour of In0.55Al0.45As/Al0.5Ga0.5As self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) has been studied at 15 K in the pressure range of 0-1.3 GPa. The atomic force microscopy image shows that the QDs have a multi-modal distribution in size. Three emission peaks were observed in the photoluminescence (PL) spectra, corresponding to the different QD families. The measured pressure coefficients are 82, 93 and 98 meV GPa(-1) for QDs with average lateral size of 26, 52 and 62 nm, respectively. The pressure coefficient of small QDs is about 17% smaller than that of bulk In0.55Al0.45As An envelope-function calculation was used to analyse the effect of pressure-induced change of barrier height, effective mass and dot size on the pressure coefficients of QDs. The Gamma-X state mixing was also included in the evaluation of the reduction of the pressure coefficients. The results indicate that both the pressure-induced increase of effective mass and Gamma-X mixing respond to the decrease of pressure coefficients, and the Gamma-X mixing is more important for small dots. The calculated Gamma-X interaction potentials are 15 and 10 meV for QDs with lateral size of 26 and 52 nm, respectively. A type-II alignment for the X conduction band is suggested according to the pressure dependence of the PL intensities. The valence-band offset was then estimated as 0.15 +/- 0.02.

We have measured photoluminescence of ZnSxTe1-x alloys (x > 0.7) at 300 K and under hydrostatic pressure up to 7 GPa. The spectra contain only a broad emission band under excitation of the 406.7 nm line. Its pressure coefficients are 47, 62 and 45 meV/GPa for x = 0.98, 0.92 and 0.79 samples, which are about 26%, 7% and 38% smaller than that of the band gap in the corresponding alloys. The Stokes shifts between emission and absorption of the bands were calculated by fitting the pressure dependence of the emission intensity, being 0.29, 0.48 and 0.13 eV for the three samples, respectively. The small pressure coefficient and large Stokes shift indicate that the emission band observed in our samples may correspond to the Te isoelectronic center in the ZnSxTe1-x alloy.

ZnTe epilayers were grown on GaAs(0 0 1) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) at different VI/II beam equivalent pressure (BEP) ratios (R-VI/II) in a wide range of 0.96-11 with constant Zn flux. Based on in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) observation, two-dimensional (2D) growth mode can be formed by increasing the R-VI/II to 2.8. The Te/Zn pressure ratios lower than 4.0 correspond to Zn-rich growth state, while the ratios over 6.4 correspond to Te-rich one. The Zn sticking coefficient at various VI/II ratios are derived by the growth rate measurement. The ZnTe epilayer grown at a R-VI/II of 6.4 displays the narrowest full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of double-crystal X-ray rocking curve (DCXRC) for (0 0 4) reflection. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) characterization shows that the grain size enlarges drastically with the R-VI/II. The surface root-mean-square (RMS) roughness decreases firstly, attains a minimum of 1.14 nm at a R-VI/II of 4.0 and then increases at higher ratios. It is suggested that the most suitable R-VI/II be controlled between 4.0 and 6.4 in order to grow high-quality ZnTe epitaxial thin films.

The photoluminescence of Cd1-xMnxTe with x=0.25, 0.40, and 0.60 is investigated at 77 K and different pressures. The pressure coefficients of the photoluminescence bands Cd0.75Mn0.25Te and Cd0.6Mn0.4Te are found to be positive and the magnitudes are about 8 X 10(-3) eV/kbar, which is in good agreement with the pressure coefficients of the interband transition. The pressure coefficient of the photoluminescence bands for Cd0.4Mn0.6Te is found to be -6 X 10(-3) eV/kbar, which is quite different from the pressure coefficient of the interband transition. The possible transition mechanism is discussed in terms of group theory and crystal field theory.

The photoluminescence from ZnS1-xTex alloy with 0 < x < 0.3 was investigated under hydrostatic pressure up to 7 GPa. Two peaks were observed in the alloys with x < 0.01, which are related to excitons bound to isolated Te isoelectronic impurities (Te-1 centers) and Te pairs (Te-2 centers), respectively. Only the Te-2 related emissions were observed in the alloys with 0.01 < x < 0.03. The emissions in the alloys with 0.03 < x < 0.3 are attributed to the excitons bound to the Te-n (n greater than or equal to 3) cluster centers. The pressure coefficient of the Te-1 related peak is 89(4) meV/GPa, about 40% larger than that of the band gap of ZnS. On the other hand, the pressure coefficient of the Te-2 related emissions is only 52(4) meV/GPa, about 15% smaller than that of the ZnS band gap. A simple Koster-Slater model has been used to explain the different pressure behavior of the Te-1 and Te-2 centers. The pressure coefficient of the Te-3 centers is 62(2) meV/GPa. Then the pressure coefficients of the Te-n centers decrease rapidly with further increasing Te composition.

The present study has attempted to investigate phase inversion and frictional pressure gradients during simultaneous vertical flow of oil and water two-phase through upward and downward pipes. The liquids selected were white oil (44 mPa s viscosity and 860 kg/m3 density) and water. The measurements were made for phase velocities varying from 0 to 1.24 m/s for water and from 0 to 1.87 m/s for oil, respectively. Experiments were carried either by keeping the mixture velocity constant and increasing the dispersed phase fraction or by keeping the continuous phase superficial velocity constant and increasing the dispersed phase superficial velocity. From the experimental results, it is shown that the frictional pressure gradient reaches to its lower value at the phase inversion point in this work. The points of phase inversion are always close to an input oil fraction of 0.8 for upward flow and of 0.75 for downward flow, respectively. A few models published in the literature are used to predict the phase inversion point and to compare the results with available experimental data. Suitable methods are suggested to predict the critical oil holdup at phase inversion based on the different viscosity ratio ranges. Furthermore, the frictional pressure gradient is analyzed with several suitable theoretical models according to the existing flow patterns. The analysis reveals that both the theoretical curves and the experimental data exhibit the same trend and the overall agreement of predicted values with experimental data is good, especially for a high oil fraction.

In this paper, preliminary experimental results are presented on pressure drop characteristics of single and two-phase flows through two T-type rectangular microchannel mixers with hydraulic diameters of 528 and 333 mum, respectively. It is shown that both N-2 and water single-phase laminar flows in microchannels, with consideration of experimental uncertainties, are consistent with classic theory, if additional effects, such as entrance effects that will interfere with the interpretation of experimental results, are eliminated by carefully designing the experiments. The obtained pressure drop data of N-2-water two-phase flow in micromixers are analyzed and compared with existing flow pattern-independent models. It is found that the Lockhart-Martinelli method generally underpredicts the frictional pressure drop. Thereafter, a modified correlation of C value in the Chisholm's equation based on linear regression of experimental data is proposed to provide a better prediction of the two-phase frictional pressure drop. Also among the homogeneous flow models investigated, the viscosity correlation of McAdams indicates the best performance in correlating the frictional pressure drop data (mean deviations within +/-20% for two micromixers both). Finally it is suggested that systematic studies are still required to accurately predict two-phase frictional performance in microchannels. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is employed to investigate the effect of solution viscosity on the rate constants of electron transfer (ET) reaction between potassium ferricyanide in water and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) in 1,2-dichloroethane. Either tetrabutylammonium (TBA(+)) or ClO4- is chosen as the common ion in both phases to control the interfacial potential drop. The rate constant of heterogeneous ET reaction between TCNQ and ferrocyanide produced in-situ, k(12), is evaluated by SECM and is inversely proportional to the viscosity of the aqueous solution and directly proportional to the diffusion coefficient of K4Fe(CN)(6) in water when the concentration of TCNQ in the DCE phase is in excess. The k(12) dependence on viscosity is explained in terms of the longitudinal relaxation time of the solution. The rate constant of the heterogeneous ET reaction between TCNQ and ferricyanide, k(21), is also obtained by SECM and these results cannot be explained by the same manner.

This paper introduces a new method to estimate the diffusion coefficient and transference number of a salt or an electroactive ion in a solution with little or no supporting electrolyte. The above two parameters can be obtained from a single potential step experiment without previous knowledge of either one. It would appear that the method could also be used in the study of ion transport in a high viscosity solvent or a solid electrolyte. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.

The curing temperature, pressure, and curing time have significant influence on finished thermosetting composite products. The time of pressure application is one of the most important processing parameters in the manufacture of a thermosetting composite. The determination of the time of pressure application relies on analysis of the viscosity variation of the polymer, associated with curing temperature and curing time. To determine it, the influence of the time of pressure application on the physical properties of epoxy-terminated poly(phenylene ether ketone) (E-PEK)-based continuous carbon fiber composite was studied. It was found that a stepwise temperature cure cycle is more suitable for manufacture of this composite. There are two viscosity valleys, in the case of the E-PEK system, associated with temperature during a stepwise cure cycle. The analysis on the effects of reinforcement fraction and defect content on the composite sheet quality indicates that the width-adjustable second viscosity valley provides a suitable pressing window. The viscosity, ranging from 400 to 1200 Pa . s at the second viscosity valley, is the optimal viscosity range for applying pressure to ensure appropriate resin flow during curing process, which enables one to get a finished composite with optimal fiber volume fraction and low void content. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to study the pressure dependence of the structure and the dynamic properties of forsterite melt (Mg_2SiO_4), diopside melt (CaMgSi_2O_6), anorthite melt (CaAl_2Si_2O_8), jadite melt (NaAlSi_2O_6) and albite melt (NaAlSi3O8) from 0 GPa to 25 GPa at about 2000 K and the following conclusions have been reached. Firstly, the ratio of NBO to T (NBO and T denote the content of non-bridging oxygen and the total content of Si~(4+) and Al~(3+) respectively) is closely related to the pressure and the composition of the melts. It decreases monotonously in forsterite, diopside and anorthite melts while increases at the initial stage and then decreases in jadite and albite melts with increasing pressure. At a fixed pressure, the shear viscosity of the melts decreases with increasing NBO/T and the variation rate is almost 150 times higher in fully polymerized melts than that in de-polymerized melts in comparison with anorthite melts. Secondly, it is generally accepted that the formation of the Si and A1 will promote the diffusion of the network-forming ions. The hypothesis is frequently employed to explain the emergence of the maximum self-diffusion coefficient of the network-forming ions in fully polymerized melts. However, I detected that the pressure corresponding to the peak of the self-diffusion coefficient of the network-forming ions is lower than that corresponding to the maximum content of Si and A1, and that there exists an approximately linear relationship between the self-diffusion coefficient of the ions and the breaking frequency of the bonds under a given pressure, which is different from the present understanding about the mechanism of self-diffusion. Thirdly, the relationship between the self-diffusion coefficient of Si~(4+), Al~(3+) and O~(2-) and the shear viscosity of the melts evolves from the Stokes-Einstein equation and Sutherland-Einstein equation to the Eyring equation with increasing pressure. And the key to obtain self-diffusion coefficient from shear viscosity under difference pressures is to determine A. in the Eyring equation. For Si~(4+) and O~(2-), this could be done using the linear relationship between A, and NBO% in anorthite melts. However, this method is inapplicable in other kinds of melts.
