The liquid and gas phase permeability, of Brazilian Pinus elliotii was studied with a custom built gas and liquid flow rate analysis chamber. The longitudinal gas phase permeability is shown to be six times greater than the radial permeability. There is no statistically significant difference between the longitudinal permeability of water versus wood preservative. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) images confirm that the reported permeability properties arc due to the wood itself rather than to blocked pores or other artifacts of the sample cutting process. Wood composition analysis shows that the samples of Pinus elliotii grown in Brazil are similar to other species of Pinus grown in tropical climates. Specifically, the Pinus elliotti in this study is composed of 17% extractives, 0,27% ashes, 21% hemicellulose, 45% cellulose and 30% lignin. Results arc discussed in the context of the continued search for effective wood preservatives for use in tropical climates.

A typical residual clayey soil originating from basalt in southern Brazil has been analyzed in order to assess the influence of wetting-induced deformation and microstructural features on the collapse behavior. Single and double oedometer tests were undertaken on a soil profile to 9 m depth. The results indicated collapsible behaviour at all profile depths. The influence of pre-consolidation stress and pedogenetic factors in the variability of the physical characteristics of the soil and in the magnitude of the collapse was noted. The collapse coefficient has been shown to be related to the both the microaggregate plasma and the varying nature of the pores and their interconnectivity.

In order to reduce energy costs, high-temperature insulation porous refractory ceramics have been subjected to increasing demands. Among the techniques used to produce these materials (such as the addition of foaming agents and organic compounds), the pore generation via phase transformation presents key aspects, such as easy processing and the absence of toxic volatiles. In this study, this technique was applied to produce porous ceramics by decomposing an aluminum magnesium hydro-carbonate known as hydrotalcite (Mg(6)Al(2)(CO(3))(OH)(16)center dot 4H(2)O). It was found out that by using this complex compound, a large fraction of pores can be generated and kept at high temperatures (above 1300 degrees C) due to the in situ formation of spinel-like phases (MgAl(2)O(4)). The effects of temperature on the fast fracture behavior of aluminum nitride with 5 wt% Y(2)O(3) ceramic were investigated. Four-point flexural strength and fracture toughness were measured in air at several temperatures (30-1,300 A degrees C). The flexural strength gradually decreased with the increase of temperature up to 1,000 A degrees C due to the change in the fracture mode from transgranular to intergranular, and then became almost constant up to 1,300 A degrees C. Two main flaw types as fracture origin were identified: small surface flaw and large pores. The volume fraction of the large pores was only 0.01%; however, they limited the strength on about 50% of the specimens. The fracture toughness decreased slightly up to 800 A degrees C controlled by the elastic modulus change, and then decreased significantly at 1,000 A degrees C due to the decrease in the grain-boundary toughness. Above 1,000 A degrees C, the fracture toughness increased significantly, and at 1,300 A degrees C, its value was close to that measured at room temperature.

Alumina ceramics with high in-line transmittance at 0.5-1.0 mm-thickness were prepared with different doping additives by sintering at 1850 degrees C in vacuum for 1-8 h. Depending on the additive contents and sintering variables bi-dimensionally large surface grains, caused by surface evaporation of MgO, had grown parallel to the surface with similar to 100 mu m thickness and lateral sizes up to the millimeter range. The abnormal grain-growth process also resulted in the formation of pores entrapped inside the large surface grains within a narrow zone at 10-20 mu m distance from the surface. The fraction of these pores is thickness-invariant. Scattering factors associated to the pores entrapped inside the bi-dimensionally large surface grains, second-phase particles, grain-boundaries, and microstructural surface defects are derived from the results of in-line transmission (at 600 nm) and are used together with microstructural characteristics to explain the light transmittance in these materials. Micrometer-sized magnetic particles hosted on network material were successfully prepared by a simple chemical process (ion exchange followed by co-precipitation) from commercial styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) coupled to scanning electron microscopy (SEM) allowed the observation of submicron particles. All the produced spherical beads have presented metallic particles (NiFe2O4, CuFe2O4, CoFe2O4, or MnFe2O4), either as isolated particles or agglomerates, located on their external and internal (within pores) The thermal stability of the composites, evaluated by thermogravimetric techniques, were found to be dependent on the amount of ferrite particles incorporated into them.

The present work reports the porous alumina structures fabrication and their quantitative structural characteristics study based on mathematical morphology analysis by using the SEM images. The algorithm used in this work was implemented in 6.2 MATLAB software. Using the algorithm it was possible to obtain the distribution of maximum, minimum and average radius of the pores in porous alumina structures. Additionally, with the calculus of the area occupied by the pores, it was possible to obtain the porosity of the structures. The quantitative results could be obtained and related to the process fabrication characteristics, showing to be reliable and promising to be used to control the pores formation process. This work describes the preparation and characterization of biogenic modified silica from rice hull ash and its use as a sorbent of cadmium ions. Thus, an agro-industrial residue has been used to produce a new adsorbent product which is able to remove toxic elements. Mesoporous biogenic silica was obtained by alkaline extraction of sodium silicate by hydrolysis with the sol-gel process, and it was modified with salen using 1,2-dichloroethane as a spacer. The surface area of the silica was measured by nitrogen adsorption/desorption analysis. Surface modification was measured by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The degree of functionalization was obtained by elemental analysis. This work showed that biogenic modified silica can be produced in aqueous media from rice hull ash using a simple method, providing an alternative method for adsorbent preparation. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the salen-modified silica is stable up to 209 C. The modified silica displays appropriate structural characteristics for an adsorbent. The cylindrical pores, open at both ends, allow free diffusion of cadmium ions to the adsorption sites on the silica surface. The surface modification increases cadmium adsorption on the silica surface 100-fold. The salen-modified silica showed specific adsorption for Cd2+ of 44.52 mg/g SiO2 at cadmium concentration of 100 mg/l.

A new method to prepare porous silk fibroin (SF) membranes without dialysis proposed. Silk fibers were degummed to remove sericin and the resultant fibroin was dissolved in a CaCl(2)-CH(3)CH(2)OH-H(2)O ternary solvent. Rather than undergoing dialysis, a fibroin salty solution was diluted in water and then submitted to a mechanical agitation that led to a phase separation through foam formation on the solution surface. This foam was continually collected and then compacted between plates to remove the excess of water. The membranes presented large pores with diameters of greater than 100 pm (as shown by scanning electron microscopy - SEM), porosity of 68% and water content of 91% w/w. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) indicated that the membranes present SF in a beta-sheet structure even before the ethanol treatment. A typical elastic deformation profile and degradation under temperature were observed using calorimetric analysis (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and mechanical tests. We have used two different probes with distinct detection properties, dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate and Amplex Red/horseradish peroxidase, as well as different respiratory substrates and electron transport chain inhibitors, to characterize the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation by the respiratory chain in calcium-overloaded mitochondria. Regardless of the respiratory substrate, calcium stimulated the mitochondrial generation of ROS, which were released at both the mitochondrial-matrix side and the extramitochondrial space, in a way insensitive to the mitochondrial permeability transition pores inhibitor cyclosporine A. In glutamate/malate-energized mitochondria, inhibition at complex I or complex III (ubiquinone cycle) similarly modulated ROS generation at either mitochondrial-matrix side or extramitochondrial space; this also occurred when the backflow of electrons to complex I in succinate-energized mitochondria was inhibited. On the other hand, in succinate-energized mitochondria the modulation of ROS generation at mitochondrial-matrix side or extra-mitochondrial space depends on the site of complex III which was inhibited. These results allow a straight comparison between the effects of different respiratory substrates and electron transport chain inhibitors on ROS generation at either mitochondrial-matrix side or extra-mitochondrial space in calcium-overloaded mitochondria.

A selective method using three-phase liquid-phase microextraction (LPME) in conjunction with LC-MS-MS was devised for the enantioselective determination of chloroquine and its n-dealkylated metabolites in plasma samples. After alkalinization of the samples, the analytes were extracted into n-octanol immobilized in the pores of a polypropylene hollow fiber membrane and back extracted into the acidic acceptor phase (0.1 M TFA) filled into the lumen of the hollow fiber. Following LPME, the analytes were resolved on a Chirobiotic V column using methanol/ACN/glacial aceti acid/diethylamine (90:10:0.5:0.5 by volume) as the mobile phase. The MS detection was carried out using multiple reaction monitoring with ESI in the positive ion mode. The optimized LPME method yielded extraction recoveries ranging from 28 to 66%. The method was linear over 5 - 500 ng/mL and precision (RSD) and accuracy (relative error) values were below 15% for all analytes. The developed method was applied to the determination of the analytes in rat plasma samples after oral administration of the racemic drug.

A method for the simultaneous analysis of the enantiomers of mefloquine (MQ) and its main metabolite carboxymefloquine (CMQ) in plasma is described for the first time. The assay involves two-step liquid-phase micro-extraction (LPME) and enantioselective high-performance liquid chromatography. In the first LPME step, the enantiomers of MQ were extracted from an alkalinized sample through a thin layer of di-n-hexyl ether immobilized in the pores of the hollow fiber and into 0.01 M perchloric acid as acceptor solution. In the second LPME step, the same sample was acidified to enable the extraction of CMQ using the same organic solvent and 0.05 M sodium hydroxide as acceptor phase. The analytes were resolved on a Chirobiotic T column in the polar-organic mode of elution and detected at 285 nm. The recovery rates from 1 mL of plasma were in the range 35-38%. The method presented limits of quantification of 50 ng/mL for all analytes and was linear up to 1,500 and 3,000 ng/mL for the enantiomers of MQ and CMQ, respectively. The plasmatic concentrations of (+)-(RS)-MQ were higher than those of (-)-(SR)-MQ after oral administration of the racemic drug to rats.

The oxidation of critical cysteines/related thiols of adenine nucleotide translocase (ANT) is believed to be an important event of the Ca(2+)-induced mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT), a process mediated by a cyclosporine A/ADP-sensitive permeability transition pores (PTP) opening. We addressed the ANT-Cys(56) relative mobility status resulting from the interaction of ANT/surrounding cardiolipins with Ca(2+) and/or ADP by means of computational chemistry analysis (Molecular Interaction Fields and Molecular Dynamics studies), supported by classic mitochondrial swelling assays. The following events were predicted: (i) Ca(2+) interacts preferentially with the ANT surrounding cardiolipins bound to the H4 helix of translocase, (ii) weakens the cardiolipins/ANT interactions and (iii) destabilizes the initial ANT-Cys(56) residue increasing its relative mobility. The binding of ADP that stabilizes the conformation ""m"" of ANT and/or cardiolipin, respectively to H5 and H4 helices, could stabilize their contacts with the short helix h56 that includes Cys(56), accounting for reducing its relative mobility. The results suggest that Ca(2+) binding to adenine nucleotide translocase (ANT)-surrounding cardiolipins in c-state of the translocase enhances (ANT)-Cys(56) relative mobility and that this may constitute a potential critical step of Ca(2+)-induced PTP opening. The classical model of surface layering followed by capillary condensation during adsorption in mesopores, is modified here by consideration of the adsorbate solid interaction potential. The new theory accurately predicts the capillary coexistence curve as well as pore criticality, matching that predicted by density functional theory. The model also satisfactorily predicts the isotherm for nitrogen adsorption at 77.4 K on MCM-41 material of various pore sizes, synthesized and characterized in our laboratory, including the multilayer region, using only data on the variation of condensation pressures with pore diameter. The results indicate a minimum mesopore diameter for the surface layering model to hold as 14.1 Å, below which size micropore filling must occur, and a minimum pore diameter for mechanical stability of the hemispherical meniscus during desorption as 34.2 Å. For pores in-between these two sizes reversible condensation is predicted to occur, in accord with the experimental data for nitrogen adsorption on MCM-41 at 77.4 K.

The conventional analysis for the estimation of the tortuosity factor for transport in porous media is modified here to account for the effect of pore aspect ratio. Structural models of the porous medium are also constructed for calculating the aspect ratio as a function of porosity. Comparison of the model predictions with the extensive data of Currie (1960) for the effective diffusivity of hydrogen in packed beds shows good agreement with a network model of randomly oriented intersecting pores for porosities upto about 50 percent, which is the region of practical interest. The predictions based on this network model are also found to be in better agreement with the data of Currie than earlier expressions developed for unconsolidated and grainy media.
