Continuous Plankton Records: General Introduction to the 1938-39 Survey

The Bulletins in this volume, except the last, deal entirely with the results of this expanded survey of 1938 and 1939. They show for the first time, month by month, the main changes in the plankton over practically the whole of the North Sea for a year and eight months. They form an important basis for comparison with the results of the post-war survey, revived on an even more extensive scale and to be described in later volumes.

Fernando Oliveira: um humanista genial: V Centenário do seu nascimento

A convite do Departamento de Línguas e Culturas da Universidade de Aveiro, formulado em finais de 2007, cerca de três dezenas de especialistas de diferentes áreas de conhecimento aceitaram escrever um ensaio cada, para integrar este volume que se destina a assinalar os 500 anos do nascimento de Fernando Oliveira, também conhecido por Fernão de Oliveira (c. 1507– – c. 1582), um Humanista genial cujo nome está intimamente associado a Aveiro. A escolha do adjectivo “genial” que figura no título e que serve para qualificar a extraordinária e multifacetada produção oliveiriana, espelho dos seus múltiplos interesses, não sendo consensual, foi intencional. Com ele pretende-se homenagear também Luís de Albuquerque, outro grande vulto da cultura e da ciência portuguesas, que, não receando as palavras, escreveu um ensaio sobre o autor intitulado «Fernando Oliveira. Um Português genial, aventureiro e insubmisso»1. Também a escolha da grafia do nome do autor foi devidamente ponderada. Seguindo as mais recentes práticas, já muito discutidas e fundamentadas2, decidimo-nos por Fernando Oliveira, por ser a forma onomástica mais moderna, inscrita no frontispício da Arte da Guerra do Mar e em todas as outras obras, com excepção da Grammatica da Lingoagem Portuguesa, onde aparece Fernão doliveyra. Respeitámos, no entanto, as opções dos autores, sobretudo dos que se dedicaram ao estudo do tratado gramatical, que ora escreveram Fernão de Oliveira, ora Fernão d’Oliveira, consentindo assim que a oscilação da grafia do nome fosse aflorando ao longo deste volume, à semelhança do que acontece no conjunto de escritos do autor. O texto, depois de melhorado, foi publicado na revista Al-Ulyà, órgão científico do Arquivo Histórico Municipal de Loulé, cuja edição saiu a público sob a chancela da respectiva edilidade.

Educating for earthquake science and risk in a tectonically slowly deforming region

Over the past decade, scientists have been called to participate more actively in public education and outreach (E&O). This is particularly true in fields of significant societal impact, such as earthquake science. Local earthquake risk culture plays a role in the way that the public engages in educational efforts. In this article, we describe an adapted E&O program for earthquake science and risk. The program is tailored for a region of slow tectonic deformation, where large earthquakes are extreme events that occur with long return periods. The adapted program has two main goals: (1) to increase the awareness and preparedness of the population to earthquake and related risks (tsunami, liquefaction, fires, etc.), and (2) to increase the quality of earthquake science education, so as to attract talented students to geosciences. Our integrated program relies on activities tuned for different population groups who have different interests and abilities, namely young children, teenagers, young adults, and professionals.

Genetic parameters and mapping quantitative trait loci associated with tibia traits in broilers.

Abstract: Selection among broilers for performance traits is resulting in locomotion problems and bone disorders, once skeletal structure is not strong enough to support body weight in broilers with high growth rates. In this study, genetic parameters were estimated for body weight at 42 days of age (BW42), and tibia traits (length, width, and weight) in a population of broiler chickens. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) were identified for tibia traits to expand our knowledge of the genetic architecture of the broiler population. Genetic correlations ranged from 0.56 +/- 0.18 (between tibia length and BW42) to 0.89 +/- 0.06 (between tibia width and weight), suggesting that these traits are either controlled by pleiotropic genes or by genes that are in linkage disequilibrium. For QTL mapping, the genome was scanned with 127 microsatellites, representing a coverage of 2630 cM. Eight QTL were mapped on Gallus gallus chromosomes (GGA): GGA1, GGA4, GGA6, GGA13, and GGA24. The QTL regions for tibia length and weight were mapped on GGA1, between LEI0079 and MCW145 markers. The gene DACH1 is located in this region; this gene acts to form the apical ectodermal ridge, responsible for limb development. Body weight at 42 days of age was included in the model as a covariate for selection effect of bone traits. Two QTL were found for tibia weight on GGA2 and GGA4, and one for tibia width on GGA3. Information originating from these QTL will assist in the search for candidate genes for these bone traits in future studies.
