Experimental studies reveal a reduction in the values of permittivity for epoxy nanocomposites; at low filler loadings as compared to neat epoxy over a wide frequency range. This permittivity reduction is attributed to the interaction dynamics between nanoparticles: and epoxy chains at the interface region and interestingly, this interaction has also been found to influence the glass transition temperatures (T-g) of the examined nanocomposite systems. Accordingly, a dual nanolayer interface model for an epoxy based nanocomposite system is analyzed to explain the obtained permittivity characteristics.

The Baltic countries share public health problems typical of most Eastern European transition economies: morbidity and mortality from non-communicable diseases is higher than in Western European countries. This situation has many similarities compared to a neighbouring country, Finland during the late 1960s. There are reasons to expect that health disadvantage may be increasing among the less advantaged population groups in the Baltic countries. The evidence on social differences in health in the Baltic countries is, however, scattered to studies using different methodologies making comparisons difficult. This study aims to bridge the evidence gap by providing comparable standardized cross-sectional and time trend analyses to the social patterning of variation in health and two key health behaviours i.e. smoking and drinking in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Finland in 1994-2004 representing Eastern European transition countries and a stable Western European country. The data consisted of similar cross-sectional postal surveys conducted in 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2004 on adult populations (aged 20 64 years) in Estonia (n=9049), Latvia (n=7685), Lithuania (n=11634) and Finland (n=18821) in connection with the Finbalt Health Monitor project. The main statistical method was logistic regression analysis. Perceived health was found to be worse among both men and women in the Baltic countries than in Finland. Poor health was associated with older age and lower education in all countries studied. Urbanization and marital status were not consistently related to health. The existing educational inequalities in health remained generally stable over time from 1994 to 2004. In the Baltic countries, however, improvement in perceived health was mainly found among the better educated men and women. Daily smoking was associated with young age, lower education and psychological distress in all countries. Among women smoking was also associated with urbanisation in all countries except Estonia. Among Lithuanian women, the educational gradient in smoking was weakest, and the overall prevalence of smoking increased over time. Drinking was generally associated with young age among men and women, and with education among women. Better educated women were more often frequent drinkers and less educated binge drinkers. The exception was that in Latvian men and women both frequent drinking and binge drinking were associated with low education. In conclusion, the Baltic countries are likely to resemble Western European countries rather than other transition societies. While health inequalities did not markedly change, substantial inequalities do remain, and there were indications of favourable developments mainly among the better educated. Pressures towards increasing health inequalities may therefore be visible in the future, which would be in accordance with the results on smoking and drinking in this study.

Regulating systems, that is, those which exhibit scale-invariant patterns in the adult, are supposed, to do so on account of interactions between cells during development. The nature of these interactions has to be such that the system of positional information (ldquomaprdquo) in the embryo also regulates. To our knowledge, this supposition regarding a regulating map has not been subjected to a direct test in any embryonic system. Here we do so by means of a simple and novel criterion and use it to examine tip regeneration in the mulicellular stage (slug) ofDictyostelium discoideum. When anterior, tip-containing fragments of slugs are amputated, a new tip spontaneously regenerates at the cut surface of the (remaining) posterior fragment. The time needed for regeneration to occur depends on the relative size of the amputated fragment but is independent of the total size of the slug. We conclude from this finding that there is at least one system underlying positional information in the slug which regulates.

Postharvest treatments with nano-silver (NS) significantly improve water relations and therefore prolong the vase life of several cut flowers, including rose (Rosa hybrida cv. Movie Star). The efficacy of NS in alleviating bacterial related blockage in the stem-ends of cut cv. Movie Star was further investigated. Four dominant bacteria strains Pseudomonas fluorescens, Aeromonas sp., Comamonas acidovorans and Chryseomonas luteola were isolated from the stem-ends of cut roses. High numbers of the isolated bacteria at 10 8colony forming unitsmL -1 vase solution led to a sharp reduction in vase life, flower fresh weight, and water uptake. In vitro assessments of the antibacterial activity of NS against the four bacterial strains was >80% at 5mgL -1 and nearly 100% at 50mgL -1. Bacterial blockage in the stem-ends of cut cv. Movie Star roses with and without NS pulse treatments was assessed during the vase period using scanning electron microscopy. Following a 50mgL -1 NS pulse treatment, there were few bacterial cells on the cut surface of the stems even on day 7. Moreover, no obvious bacterial blockage was observed inside the xylem vessels. In contrast, the cut surface of control stems was covered with bacteria and associated amorphous substances, and numerous bacteria were found in the xylem vessels. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

The relative efficacies of three chemically different nano-silver (NS) formulations were evaluated for their potential to extend the vase life of short-lived cut Acacia holosericea foliage. The novel proprietary formulations were neutral NS, acidic NS and ionic NS. They were characterised in terms of particle size, pH value, colour and odour. The NS treatments were applied as vase (lower concentrations) or pulse (higher concentrations) solutions. Among the treatments compared, neutral NS as a 4 mg L-1 vase solution or as a 40 mg L-1 24 h pulse treatment and acidic NS as a 0.5 mg L-1 vase solution or as a 5 mg L-1 24 h pulse treatment significantly (P <= 0.05) extended the vase life of A. holosericea. Vase life extensions over the deionised water (DI) controls were associated with better maintenance of relative fresh weight and vase water uptake, suppression of bacterial growth in the vase water and stem-end, and delaying stem blockage. In contrast, ionic-NS applied as a 0.5 or 1 mg L-1 vase solution treatment or as a 5 or 10 mg L-1 pulse treatment caused severe phytotoxicity to cut A. holosericea stems. The results suggest that NS treatments, especially neutral NS and acidic NS pulse treatments, could be a potential postharvest technology for commercial application to cut A. holosericea. Structural stability of small sized nonstoichiometric CdS nano clusters between zincblende and wurtzite structures has been investigated using first-principles density functional calculations. Our study shows that the relative stability of these two structures depends sensitively on whether the surface is S-terminated or Cd-terminated. The associated band gap also exhibits non-monotonic behavior as a function of cluster size. Our findings may shed light on contradictory reports of experimentally observed structures of CdS nano clusters found in the literature.

There has been a lot of effort to make Silicon optically active. In this work we examine two methods of generating nanocrystals of Silicon from bulk fragments. This approach of ours allows us to play with the shape of the nanocrystals and therefore the degeneracy of the conduction band minimum. We go on to examine whether similar sized particles with different shapes have the same physical properties, and finally whether Silicon may be rendered optically active by this route. While we do find that similar sized particles with different shapes may have different band gaps, this route of modifying the degeneracy of the conduction band minimum makes nano Si slightly optically active.

Ag-substituted (Ag sub) and Ag-impregnated (Ag imp), anatase phase nano-TiO2 have been synthesized by solution combustion technique and reduction technique, respectively. The catalysts were characterized extensively by powder XRD, TEM, XPS, FT-Raman, UV absorption, FT-IR, TGA, photoluminescence, BET surface area and isoelectric pH measurements. These catalysts were used for the photodegradation of dyes and for the selective photooxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanone. The photoactivities of the combustion-synthesized catalysts were compared with those of commercial Degussa P 25 (DP 25) TiO2, and Ag-impregnated DP 25 (Ag DP). For the photocatalytic degradation of dyes, unsubstituted combustion-synthesized TiO2 (CS TiO2) exhibited the highest activity, followed by 1% Ag imp and 1% Ag sub. For the photoconversion of cyclohexane, the total conversion of cyclohexane and the selectivity of cyclohexanone followed the order: 1% Ag sub > DP 25 > CS TiO2 > 1% Ag imp > 1% Ag DP. The kinetics of the photodegradation of dyes and of the photooxidation of cyclohexane were modeled using Langmuir–Hinshelwood rate equation and a free radical mechanism, respectively, and the rate coefficients were determined. The difference in activity values of the catalysts observed for these two reactions and the detailed characterization of these catalysts are described in this study.

We have shown previously that the Ca2+-specific fluorescent dyes chlortetracycline (CTC) and indo-1/AM can be used to distinguish between prestalk and prespore cells in Dictyostelium discoideum at a very early stage. In the present study, pre- and post-aggregative amoebae of Dictyostelium discoideum were labelled with CTC or indo-1 and their fluorescence monitored after being drawn into a fine glass capillary. The cells rapidly form two zones of Ca2+-CTC or Ca2+-indo-1 fluorescence. Anterior (air side) cells display a high level of fluorescence; the level drops in the middle portion of the capillary and rises again to a lesser extent in the posteriormost cells (oil side). When bounded by air on both sides, the cells display high fluorescence at both ends. When oil is present at both ends of the capillary, there is little fluorescence except for small regions at the ends. These outcomes are evident within a couple of minutes of the start of the experiment and the fluorescence pattern intensifies over the course of time. By using the indicator neutral red, as well as with CTC and indo-1, we show that a band displaying strong fluorescence moves away from the anterior end before stabilizing at the anterior-posterior boundary. We discuss our findings in relation to the role of Ca2+ in cell-type differentiation in Dictyostelium discoideum.

The light and heat induced changes in the optical band gap of Sb/As2S3 nanomultilayered chalcogenide film has been studied. Even though the changes in optical bandgap are attributed to the light and heat induced interdiffusion, the diffusional intermixing between the layers is rather different with light and heat. The observed difference in the light and heat induced interdiffusion is due to unequal diffusion coefficients of light and heat predicted by thermal spike model.

This thesis work focuses on the role of TGF-beta family antagonists during the development of mouse dentition. Tooth develops through an interaction between the dental epithelium and underlying neural crest derived mesenchyme. The reciprocal signaling between these tissues is mediated by soluble signaling molecules and the balance between activatory and inhibitory signals appears to be essential for the pattern formation. We showed the importance of Sostdc1 in the regulation of tooth shape and number. The absence of Sostdc1 altered the molar cusp patterning and led to supernumerary tooth formation both in the molar and incisor region. We showed that initially, Sostdc1 expression is in the mesenchyme, suggesting that dental mesenchyme may limit supernumerary tooth induction. We tested this in wild-type incisors by minimizing the amount of mesenchymal tissue surrounding the incisor tooth germs prior to culture in vitro. The cultured teeth phenocopied the extra incisor phenotype of the Sostdc1-deficient mice. Furthermore, we showed that minimizing the amount of dental mesenchyme in cultured Sostdc1-deficient incisors caused the formation of additional de novo incisors that resembled the successional incisor development resulting from activated Wnt signaling. Sostdc1 seemed to be able to inhibit both mesenchymal BMP4 and epithelial canonical Wnt signaling, which thus allows Sostdc1 to restrict the enamel knot size and regulate the tooth shape and number. Our work emphasizes the dual role for the tooth mesenchyme as a suppressor as well as an activator during tooth development. We found that the placode, forming the thick mouse incisor, is prone to disintegration during initiation of tooth development. The balance between two mesenchymal TGF-beta family signals, BMP4 and Activin is essential in this regulation. The inhibition of BMP4 or increase in Activin signaling led to the splitting of the large incisor placode into two smaller placodes resulting in thin incisors. These two signals appeared to have different effects on tooth epithelium and the analysis of the double null mutant mice lacking Sostdc1 and Follistatin indicated that these TGF-beta inhibitors regulate the mutual balance of BMP and Activin in vivo. In addition, this work provides an alternative explanation for the issue of incisor identity published in Science by Tucker et al. in 1998 and proposes that the molar like morphology that can be obtained by inhibiting BMP signaling is due to partial splitting of the incisor placodes and not due to change in tooth identity from the incisor to the molar. This thesis work presents possible molecular mechanisms that may have modified the mouse dental pattern during evolution leading to the typical rodent dentition of modern mouse. The rodent dentition is specialized for gnawing and consists of two large continuously growing incisors and toothless diastema region separating the molars and incisors. The ancestors of rodents had higher number of more slender incisors together with canines and premolars. Additionally, murine rodents, which include the mouse, have lost their ability for tooth replacement. This work has revealed that the inhibitory molecules appear to play a role in the tooth number suppression by delineating the spatial and temporal action of the inductive signals. The results suggest that Sostdc1 plays an essential role in several stages of tooth development through the regulation of both the BMP and Wnt pathway. The work shows a dormant sequential tooth forming potential present in wild type mouse incisor region and gives a new perspective on tooth suppression by dental mesenchyme. It reveals as well a novel mechanism to create a large mouse incisor through the regulation of mesenchymal balance between inductive and inhibitory signals.

The early stages of plasticity in KBr single crystals have been studied by means of nano-meter-scale indentation in complementary experiments using both a nanoindenter and an atomic force microscope. Nanoindentafion experiments precisely correlate indentation depth and forces, while force microscopy provides high-resolution force measurements and images of the surface revealing dislocation activity. The two methods provide very similar results for the onset of plasticity in KBr. Upon loading we observe yield of the surface in atomic layer units which we attribute to the nucleation of single dislocations. Unloading is accompanied by plastic recovery as evident from a non-linear force distance unloading curve and delayed discrete plasticity events.

We consider a suspended elastic rod under longitudinal compression. The compression can be used to adjust potential energy for transverse displacements from the harmonic to the double well regime. The two minima in potential energy curve describe two possible buckled states. Using transition state theory (TST) we have calculated the rate of conversion from one state to other. If the strain epsilon = 4 epsilon c the simple TST rate diverges. We suggest a method to correct this divergence for quantum calculations. We also find that zero point energy contributions can be quite large so that single mode calculations can lead to large errors in the rate.
