This paper applies a genetic algorithm with hierarchically structured population to solve unconstrained optimization problems. The population has individuals distributed in several overlapping clusters, each one with a leader and a variable number of support individuals. The hierarchy establishes that leaders must be fitter than its supporters with the topological organization of the clusters following a tree. Computational tests evaluate different population structures, population sizes and crossover operators for better algorithm performance. A set of known benchmark test problems is solved and the results found are compared with those obtained from other methods described in the literature, namely, two genetic algorithms, a simulated annealing, a differential evolution and a particle swarm optimization. The results indicate that the method employed is capable of achieving better performance than the previous approaches in regard as the two criteria usually employed for comparisons: the number of function evaluations and rate of success. The method also has a superior performance if the number of problems solved is taken into account. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper estimates the impact of the use of structured methods on the quality of education for students in primary public school in Brazil. Structured methods encompass a range of pedagogical and managerial instruments applied in the educational system. In recent years, several municipalities in the state of Sao Paulo have contracted out private educational providers to implement these structured methods in their schooling systems. Their pedagogical proposal involves structuring of curriculum content, development of teacher and student textbooks, and the training and supervision of teachers anti instructors. Using a difference-in-differences estimation strategy, we find that the 4th- and 8th-grade students in the municipalities with structured methods performed better in Portuguese and mathematics than did students in municipalities not exposed to these methods. We find no differences in passing rates. A robustness test supports the assumption that there is no unobserved municipal characteristics associated with proficiency changes over time that may affect the results. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Cooperation plays an important role in the evolution of species and human societies. The understanding of the emergence and persistence of cooperation in those systems is a fascinating and fundamental question. Many mechanisms were extensively studied and proposed as supporting cooperation. The current work addresses the role of migration for the maintenance of cooperation in structured populations. This problem is investigated in an evolutionary perspective through the prisoner's dilemma game paradigm. It is found that migration and structure play an essential role in the evolution of the cooperative behavior. The possible outcomes of the model are extinction of the entire population, dominance of the cooperative strategy and coexistence between cooperators and defectors. The coexistence phase is obtained in the range of large migration rates. It is also verified the existence of a critical level of structuring beyond that cooperation is always likely. In resume, we conclude that the increase in the number of demes as well as in the migration rate favor the fixation of the cooperative behavior.

Context-aware computing is currently considered the most promising approach to overcome information overload and to speed up access to relevant information and services. Context-awareness may be derived from many sources, including user profile and preferences, network information, sensor analysis; usually context-awareness relies on the ability of computing devices to interact with the physical world, i.e. with the natural and artificial objects hosted within the "environment”. Ideally, context-aware applications should not be intrusive and should be able to react according to user’s context, with minimum user effort. Context is an application dependent multidimensional space and the location is an important part of it since the very beginning. Location can be used to guide applications, in providing information or functions that are most appropriate for a specific position. Hence location systems play a crucial role. There are several technologies and systems for computing location to a vary degree of accuracy and tailored for specific space model, i.e. indoors or outdoors, structured spaces or unstructured spaces. The research challenge faced by this thesis is related to pedestrian positioning in heterogeneous environments. Particularly, the focus will be on pedestrian identification, localization, orientation and activity recognition. This research was mainly carried out within the “mobile and ambient systems” workgroup of EPOCH, a 6FP NoE on the application of ICT to Cultural Heritage. Therefore applications in Cultural Heritage sites were the main target of the context-aware services discussed. Cultural Heritage sites are considered significant test-beds in Context-aware computing for many reasons. For example building a smart environment in museums or in protected sites is a challenging task, because localization and tracking are usually based on technologies that are difficult to hide or harmonize within the environment. Therefore it is expected that the experience made with this research may be useful also in domains other than Cultural Heritage. This work presents three different approaches to the pedestrian identification, positioning and tracking: Pedestrian navigation by means of a wearable inertial sensing platform assisted by the vision based tracking system for initial settings an real-time calibration; Pedestrian navigation by means of a wearable inertial sensing platform augmented with GPS measurements; Pedestrian identification and tracking, combining the vision based tracking system with WiFi localization. The proposed localization systems have been mainly used to enhance Cultural Heritage applications in providing information and services depending on the user’s actual context, in particular depending on the user’s location.

Aim of the research: to develop a prototype of homogeneous high-throughput screening (HTS) for identification of novel integrin antagonists for the treatment of ocular allergy and to better understand the mechanisms of action of integrin-mediated levocabastine antiallergic action. Results: This thesis provides evidence that adopting scintillation proximity assay (SPA) levocabastine (IC50=406 mM), but not the first-generation antihistamine chlorpheniramine, displaces [125I]fibronectin (FN) binding to human a4b1 integrin. This result is supported by flow cytometry analysis, where levocabastine antagonizes the binding of a primary antibody to integrin a4 expressed in Jurkat E6.1 cells. Levocabastine, but not chlorpheniramine, binds to a4b1 integrin and prevents eosinophil adhesion to VCAM-1, FN or human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) cultured in vitro. Similarly, levocabastine affects aLb2/ICAM-1-mediated adhesion of Jurkat E6.1 cells. Analyzing the supernatant of TNF-a-treated (24h) eosinophilic cells (EoL-1), we report that levocabastine reduces the TNF-a-induced release of the cytokines IL-12p40, IL-8 and VEGF. Finally, in a model of allergic conjunctivitis, levocastine eye drops (0.05%) reduced the clinical aspects of the early and late phase reactions and the conjunctival expression of a4b1 integrin by reducing infiltrated eosinophils. Conclusions: SPA is a highly efficient, amenable to automation and robust binding assay to screen novel integrin antagonists in a HTS setting. We propose that blockade of integrinmediated cell adhesion might be a target of the anti-allergic action of levocabastine and may play a role in preventing eosinophil adhesion and infiltration in allergic conjunctivitis.

Background Decreased exercise capacity, and reduction in peak oxygen uptake are present in most patients affected by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) . In addition an abnormal blood pressure response during a maximal exercise test was seen to be associated with high risk for sudden cardiac death in adult patients affected by HCM. Therefore exercise test (CPET) has become an important part of the evaluation of the HCM patients, but data on its role in patients with HCM in the pediatric age are quite limited. Methods and results Between 2004 and 2010, using CPET and echocardiography, we studied 68 children (mean age 13.9 ± 2 years) with HCM. The exercise test was completed by all the patients without adverse complications. The mean value of achieved VO2 max was 31.4 ± 8.3 mL/Kg/min which corresponded to 77.5 ± 16.9 % of predicted range. 51 patients (75%) reached a subnormal value of VO2max. On univariate analysis the achieved VO2 as percentage of predicted and the peak exercise systolic blood pressure (BP) Z score were inversely associated with max left ventricle (LV) wall thickness, with E/Ea ratio, and directly related with Ea and Sa wave velocities No association was found with the LV outflow tract gradient. During a mean follow up of 2.16 ± 1.7 years 9 patients reached the defined clinical end point of death, transplantation, implanted cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) shock, ICD implantation for secondary prevention or myectomy. Patients with peak VO2 < 52% or with peak systolic BP Z score < -5.8 had lower event free survival at follow up. Conclusions Exercise capacity is decreased in patients with HCM in pediatric age and global ventricular function seems being the most important determinant of exercise capacity in these patients. CPET seems to play an important role in prognostic stratification of children affected by HCM.

Die Invarianz physikalischer Gesetze unter Lorentztransformationen ist eines der fundamentalen Postulate der modernen Physik und alle Theorien der grundlegenden Wechselwirkungen sind in kovarianter Form formuliert. Obwohl die Spezielle Relativitätstheorie (SRT) in einer Vielzahl von Experimenten mit hoher Genauigkeit überprüft und bestätigt wurde, sind aufgrund der weitreichenden Bedeutung dieses Postulats weitere verbesserte Tests von grundsätzlichem Interesse. Darüber hinaus weisen moderne Ansätze zur Vereinheitlichung der Gravitation mit den anderen Wechselwirkungen auf eine mögliche Verletzung der Lorentzinvarianz hin. In diesem Zusammenhang spielen Ives-Stilwell Experimente zum Test der Zeitdilatation in der SRT eine bedeutende Rolle. Dabei wird die hochauflösende Laserspektroskopie eingesetzt, um die Gültigkeit der relativistischen Dopplerformel – und damit des Zeitdilatationsfaktors γ – an relativistischen Teilchenstrahlen zu untersuchen. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurde ein Ives-Stilwell Experiment an 7Li+-Ionen, die bei einer Geschwindigkeit von 34 % der Lichtgeschwindigkeit im Experimentierspeicherring (ESR) des GSI Helmholtzzentrums für Schwerionenforschung gespeichert waren, durchgeführt. Unter Verwendung des 1s2s3S1→ 1s2p3P2-Übergangs wurde sowohl Λ-Spektroskopie als auch Sättigungsspektroskopie betrieben. Durch die computergestützte Analyse des Fluoreszenznachweises und unter Verwendung optimierter Kantenfilter für den Nachweis konnte das Signal zu Rauschverhältnis entscheidend verbessert und unter Einsatz eines zusätzlichen Pumplasers erstmals ein Sättigungssignal beobachtet werden. Die Frequenzstabilität der beiden verwendeten Lasersysteme wurde mit Hilfe eines Frequenzkamms spezifiziert, um eine möglichst hohe Genauigkeit zu erreichen. Die aus den Strahlzeiten gewonnen Daten wurden im Rahmen der Robertson-Mansouri-Sexl-Testtheorie (RMS) und der Standard Model Extension (SME) interpretiert und entsprechende Obergrenzen für die relevanten Testparameter der jeweiligen Theorie bestimmt. Die Obergrenze für den Testparameter α der RMS-Theorie konnte gegenüber den früheren Messungen bei 6,4 % der Lichtgeschwindigkeit am Testspeicherring (TSR) des Max-Planck-Instituts für Kernphysik in Heidelberg um einen Faktor 4 verbessert werden.

This study investigates biomass and particulate matter also known as PM produced from the combustion of a domestic boiler powered by mais and how to separate PM from the stream of smoke output from the boiler using wet scrubber with structured packing. Sperimentations show the inefficiency of the separator used, so we provide an optimization of the structured packing changing geometric parameters as angle of the bend or thickness of the channels. In order to obtain a higher separation efficiency we remove the structured packinkg and introduce a packed bed composed of spheres of polyethylene with a diameter of 3 mm.

Play is a scholarly topic with a long and convoluted history. This faculty colloquium will make a few obligatory nods to the literature, but then focus instead on how play might be related to the Bucknell educational mission. The talk will be structured more in the spirit of a “This I Believe” essay. It is meant to challenge the Bucknell community to consider play as an important component of a healthy environment. Some questions we will visit: Why as we mature do we view play as the opposite of work? How can play be used to practice skills and explore our world-view? What is the connection between play and creative habits? How can we pair play with reflection to stimulate deep learning? How might we alter our risk/reward structures to encourage productive play?

Information about the welfare and husbandry of pet and laboratory fish is scarce although millions of fish are sold in pet shops and used in laboratory research every year. Inadequate housing conditions can cause behavioural problems also in fish since they are complex animals with sophisticated behaviour. In this study, we investigated the influence of environmental complexity on compartment preference and behaviour in zebrafish (Danio rerio) and checker barbs (Puntius oligolepis). For the preference test, large aquaria were divided by two semi-transparent walls of Plexiglas into an empty compartment, a structured compartment enriched with plants and clay pots, and a smaller compartment in-between, where food was provided. For observation, the empty and structured compartments were divided into six zones of similar size by defining three vertical layers and two horizontal areas (back vs. front area). Seven groups of six to nine zebrafish and seven groups of seven or eight checker barbs were observed on four days each (within a time period of ten days) to assess compartment use and activity, and to assess behavioural diversity and use of zones within compartments. Both zebrafish and checker barbs showed a significant preference for the structured compartment. Nevertheless, in neither species did behavioural diversity differ between the empty and structured compartment. Zebrafish used all zones in both compartments to the same extent. Checker barbs, however, used the structured compartment more evenly than the empty compartment, where they mainly used the lower and middle zones. These results suggest that zebrafish and checker barbs have a preference for complex environments. Furthermore, they indicate that the behavioural and ecological needs of fish may vary depending on species, and recommendations for husbandry should be specified at species level. Following the idea that response inhibition processes play a central role in concealing information, the present study investigated the influence of a Go/No-go task as an interfering mental activity, performed parallel to the Concealed Information Test (CIT), on the detectability of concealed information. 40 undergraduate students participated in a mock-crime experiment and simultaneously performed a CIT and a Go/No-go task. Electrodermal activity (EDA), respiration line length (RLL), heart rate (HR) and finger pulse waveform length (FPWL) were registered. Reaction times were recorded as behavioral measures in the Go/No-go task as well as in the CIT. As a within-subject control condition, the CIT was also applied without an additional task. The parallel task did not influence the mean differences of the physiological measures of the mock-crime-related probe and the irrelevant items. This finding might possibly be due to the fact that the applied parallel task induced a tonic rather than a phasic mental activity, which did not influence differential responding to CIT items. No physiological evidence for an interaction between the parallel task and sub-processes of deception (e.g. inhibition) was found. Subjects' performance in the Go/No-go parallel task did not contribute to the detection of concealed information. Generalizability needs further investigations of different variations of the parallel task.

BACKGROUND The majority of radiological reports are lacking a standard structure. Even within a specialized area of radiology, each report has its individual structure with regards to details and order, often containing too much of non-relevant information the referring physician is not interested in. For gathering relevant clinical key parameters in an efficient way or to support long-term therapy monitoring, structured reporting might be advantageous. OBJECTIVE Despite of new technologies in medical information systems, medical reporting is still not dynamic. To improve the quality of communication in radiology reports, a new structured reporting system was developed for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA), intended to enhance professional communication by providing the pertinent clinical information in a predefined standard. METHODS Actual state analysis was performed within the departments of radiology and vascular surgery by developing a Technology Acceptance Model. The SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis focused on optimization of the radiology reporting of patients with AAA. Definition of clinical parameters was achieved by interviewing experienced clinicians in radiology and vascular surgery. For evaluation, a focus group (4 radiologists) looked at the reports of 16 patients. The usability and reliability of the method was validated in a real-world test environment in the field of radiology. RESULTS A Web-based application for radiological "structured reporting" (SR) was successfully standardized for AAA. Its organization comprises three main categories: characteristics of pathology and adjacent anatomy, measurements, and additional findings. Using different graphical widgets (eg, drop-down menus) in each category facilitate predefined data entries. Measurement parameters shown in a diagram can be defined for clinical monitoring and be adducted for quick adjudications. Figures for optional use to guide and standardize the reporting are embedded. Analysis of variance shows decreased average time required with SR to obtain a radiological report compared to free-text reporting (P=.0001). Questionnaire responses confirm a high acceptance rate by the user. CONCLUSIONS The new SR system may support efficient radiological reporting for initial diagnosis and follow-up for AAA. Perceived advantages of our SR platform are ease of use, which may lead to more accurate decision support. The new system is open to communicate not only with clinical partners but also with Radiology Information and Hospital Information Systems.

This multi-phase study examined the influence of retrieval processes on children’s metacognitive processes in relation to and in interaction with achievement level and age. First, N = 150 9/10- and 11/12-year old high and low achievers watched an educational film and predicted their test performance. Children then solved a cloze test regarding the film content including answerable and unanswerable items and gave confidence judgments to every answer. Finally, children withdrew answers that they believed to be incorrect. All children showed adequate metacognitive processes before and during test taking with 11/12- year-olds outperforming 9/10-year-olds when considering characteristics of on-going retrieval processes. As to the influence of achievement level, high compared to low achievers proved to be more accurate in their metacognitive monitoring and controlling. Results suggest that both cognitive resources (operationalized through achievement level) and mnemonic experience (assessed through age) fuel metacognitive development. Nevertheless, when facing higher demands regarding retrieval processes, experience seems to play the more important role.

Introduction To meet the quality standards for high-stakes OSCEs, it is necessary to ensure high quality standardized performance of the SPs involved.[1] One of the ways this can be assured is through the assessment of the quality of SPs` performance in training and during the assessment. There is some literature concerning validated instruments that have been used to assess SP performance in formative contexts but very little related to high stakes contexts.[2], [3], [4]. Content and structure During this workshop different approaches to quality control for SPs` performance, developed in medicine, pharmacy and nursing OSCEs, will be introduced. Participants will have the opportunity to use these approaches in simulated interactions. Advantages and disadvantages of these approaches will be discussed. Anticipated outcomes By the end of this session, participants will be able to discuss the rationale for quality control of SPs` performance in high stakes OSCEs, outline key factors in creating strategies for quality control, identify various strategies for assuring quality control, and reflect on applications to their own practice. Play has been proposed as a promising indicator of positive animal welfare. We aimed to study play in rats across contexts (conspecific/heterospecific) and types (social: pinning, being pinned; solitary: scampering), and we investigated its structure using behavioral sequence analysis. Group-housed (three per cage) adolescent male Lister Hooded rats (n = 21) were subjected to a Play-In-Pairs test: after a 3 hour isolation period, a pair of cage-mates was returned to the home cage and both social and solitary play were scored for 20 min. This procedure was repeated for each pair combination across three consecutive days, and individual play scores were calculated. Heterospecific play was measured using a Tickling test: rats were individually tickled by the experimenter through bouts of gentle, rapid finger movements on their underside, and the number of positive 50 kHz frequency modulated vocalizations and experimenter-directed approach behaviors were recorded. Both of the above tests were compared with social play in the home cage. While conspecific play in both the Play-In-Pairs test and home cage were correlated, both seemed to be unrelated to heterospecific play in the Tickling test. During the Play-In-Pairs test, although both solitary and social play types occurred, they were unrelated, and solitary locomotor play of one rat did not predict the subsequent play behavior of its cage mate. Analysis of play structure revealed that social play occurred more often in bouts of repeated behaviors while solitary play sequences did not follow a specific pattern. If play is to be used as an indicator of positive welfare in rats, context, type and structure differences should be taken into account.
