Nas trs ltimas dcadas do colonialismo portugus, as polticas destinadas s populaes muulmanas da Guin e de Moambique passaram da hostilidade mais ou menos aberta para uma estratgia de seduo, com vista a promover um Islo portugus e a usar certos sectores muulmanos no combate aos movimentos nacionalistas. Esta transio teve tambm uma componente transnacional, na medida em que se quis alargar a interveno portuguesa a um espao estratgico designado como mundo islmico. O presente artigo procura analisar essa interveno, debruando-se sobre o pensamento geopoltico que a informou e as suas aplicaes diplomticas, em particular no relacionamento com os pases rabes.

Este artigo tem por base um estudo enquadrado no uso de materiais/modelos de ensino da Matemtica na dcada de 60, aquando da implementao do Movimento Matemtica Moderna, em Portugal. Para atingir este objectivo definimos trs questes: 1) J havia interesse no uso destes novos mtodos de ensino, e consequentemente no uso de materiais diversos que levassem a uma melhor aprendizagem por parte dos alunos, antes da dcada de 60? 2) De que modo os professores aplicaram e usaram estes mtodos/materiais na sua prtica docente? E que formao tiveram? 3) Quais os mtodos e materiais que os professores utilizavam nas suas aulas? O foco central deste trabalho parte da anlise de dois artigos escritos na revista Labor, o primeiro em 1952 e o segundo em 1960, pelo professor Antnio Augusto Lopes1 sobre o uso de materiais no 1 ciclo e o Laboratrio de Matemtica. Toda a pesquisa deste trabalho focou-se na interpretao de material fornecido pelo professor Lopes (manuscritos, relatrios, livros e fotografias, documentos do Ministrio da Educao Nacional), bem como por reflexes e comentrios do prprio, registadas na forma de entrevista,2 sobre o que foi o Movimento Matemtica Moderna ao nvel da prtica docente, com recurso a novas metodologias e materiais de ensino. O perodo que ir ser analisado em termos cronolgicos ser de 1957 a 1965, isto porque um perodo experimental e de mudana. A reunio de 57 da CIEAEM em Madrid o marco histrico que ir despoletar o interesse da Comisso e de Augusto Lopes para a aplicao dos novos materiais\modelos. Apesar de s em 1965 serem criadas as primeiras turmas piloto para aplicao das metodologias e dos novos materiais\modelos preconizadas pelo MMM.

Se analiza la situacin actual de la pesquera de la anchoveta peruana (Engraulis ringens), en el periodo 1950 - 1999 y se presenta un diagnstico de su situacin. En este contexto, el trabajo enfoca el anlisis de la pesquera en trminos de sus unidades de pesca y los principales aspectos biolgico-pesqueros, ndice de captura por unidad de esfuerzo y dinmica poblacional del recurso. Finalmente, se presentan las principales medidas de administracin para este recurso.

Se presentan las series de tiempo mensuales de las Temperaturas Superficiales de Mar (TSM) de 9 estaciones costeras localizadas a lo lardo de la costa peruana, para el periodo enero 1950 - abril 1988 y un anlisis preliminar de su variabilidad espacial y temporal.

John Smith (1894-1977), son of Daniel Smith and Annie Douglas was a native of Scotland, immigrating to Canada in 1913. He first worked as a coach builder, then as a carpenter, finally developing his own contracting business. During WWI he served overseas with the 10th Battery, RCA as a sergeant. In 1924 Smith married Jean Wood, and together they had a daughter Irene (Hugh Langley). Smith first entered politics in 1940 serving as an alderman for the next 11 years. In 1954 he was elected mayor of the city of St. Catharines, and was twice returned to office by acclamation, serving until 1957 when he successfully ran as the Progressive Conservative candidate representing Lincoln County in the federal election. He won the election by a 10 000 vote majority. He served his constituents in Ottawa until he was defeated in the 1962 election. After leaving politics Mr. Smith was active in his community. He spearheaded the establishment of the St. Catharines Museum, and then was appointed its first director in 1966, serving in that capacity until 1972. He was an active member of the board of governors of the St. Catharines General Hospital and a life member and former president of the Lincoln County Humane Society. In 1971 he was voted Citizen of the Year for the city of St. Catharines. John Smith died on February 8, 1977 and was buried at Victoria Lawn Cemetery. William B. Rollason was a businessman from St. Catharines. His business interests included insurance sales, real estate and housing development. He was an active Rotarian, serving as president from 1945 to 1946. He served on the Niagara Parks Commission Board from 1944 until his death in 1959. Mr. Rollason was the president of the St. Catharines Chamber of Commerce, president of the Lincoln County Conservative Association, a member of the Navy Island Peace Capital Group, vice chairman of the War Savings Committee and part owner of the Welland House Hotel in St. Catharines.

he Niagara Falls Bridge Commission was created by a joint resolution of the 1938 U.S. Congressional Third Session. The Extra Provincial Corporations Act of Ontario, Canada licenses the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission. Canada and the United States are equally represented on the Commission by an 8 member Board of Commissioners. Canadian commissioners are appointed by the Premier of Ontario. The three Niagara bridges are the Whirlpool Bridge, the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge and the Rainbow Bridge.

Items include: 13 small poems clipped from newspapers. None of the poems list authors. Most of the poems are based on life lessons. Clippings of short stories which appear to have come from a St. Catharines newspaper. The stories include anecdotes, humour and medical advice. There is no author listed on any of the stories. 2 coloured sewing machine advertisements each measuring 9 cm. x 13 cm. and 9 cm. x 14 cm. 1 broadside measuring 27 cm. x 37 cm. and posted by the Peninsular Game Club of St. Catharines. The broadside is a copy of the game laws of 1874 with a warning that breach of these laws will bring rigorous prosecution.
