One hardcover photo album containing black and white photos. Many of the photos were taken in the St. Catharines area. Included are photos of Port Dalhousie, Port Weller, Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake and St. Catharines. There are also photos of Braeside, Ont. and the Ottawa valley. Various local landmarks are included, such as the armoury in St. Catharines, Montebello Park, and Martindale pond. Some of the events captured include a train wreck that occurred in St. Catharines in 1914, the visit of the Governor General to St. Catharines in 1914 (featuring the Carnegie library and Post Office and federal building decorated with flags), and an airplane that crashed into a body of water, possibly a plane from an air training camp in Beamsville during World War I. There are also two photos of champion Niagara district basketball teams, possibly taken in the gymnasium building located behind the former St. Catharines Collegiate building (later Robertson School) on Church Street. One photo includes Norman Byrne, Gladys Ansell, Miriam Marshall, Irene Stoter (?), Mildrerd Houston, A. Gardner, and Madeline Jenner. The other photo includes George Moase, W. Bennett, Norman Byrne, Jack Bain, Mr. Brackenbury, Cyril Merriman, Jim Galway, Harry Erskine, and Roy Carpenter.

L'atténuation statistique des surdétections d'un correcteur grammatical symbolique

Les logiciels de correction grammaticale commettent parfois des détections illégitimes (fausses alertes), que nous appelons ici surdétections. La présente étude décrit les expériences de mise au point d’un système créé pour identifier et mettre en sourdine les surdétections produites par le correcteur du français conçu par la société Druide informatique. Plusieurs classificateurs ont été entraînés de manière supervisée sur 14 types de détections faites par le correcteur, en employant des traits couvrant di-verses informations linguistiques (dépendances et catégories syntaxiques, exploration du contexte des mots, etc.) extraites de phrases avec et sans surdétections. Huit des 14 classificateurs développés sont maintenant intégrés à la nouvelle version d’un correcteur commercial très populaire. Nos expériences ont aussi montré que les modèles de langue probabilistes, les SVM et la désambiguïsation sémantique améliorent la qualité de ces classificateurs. Ce travail est un exemple réussi de déploiement d’une approche d’apprentissage machine au service d’une application langagière grand public robuste.

Economic shocks and crime: evidence from the crash of ponzi schemes

In November 2008, Colombian authorities dismantled a network of Ponzi schemes, making hundreds of thousands of investors lose tens of millions of dollars throughout the country. Using original data on the geographical incidence of the Ponzi schemes, this paper estimates the impact of their break down on crime. We find that the crash of Ponzi schemes differentially exacerbated crime in affected districts. Confirming the intuition of the standard economic model of crime, this effect is only present in places with relatively weak judicial and law enforcement institutions, and with little access to consumption smoothing mechanisms such as microcredit. In addition, we show that, with the exception of economically-motivated felonies such as robbery, violent crime is not affected by the negative shock.

Esta dissertação se propõe responder a uma questão específica: como uma área que propõe uma nova cultura escolar acontece e se estabelece em uma escola secular e com forte tradição humanística? Orientada pelas idéias e escritos do pesquisador, filósofo e teórico chileno José Joaquin Brunner, busquei reflexões sobre a transformação social contemporânea advinda da aproximação da educação com as novas tecnologias da informação e comunicação. Para registrar personagens relevantes e a inserção de práticas culturais centradas no uso das tecnologias da informação e comunicação, em diferentes espaços e tempos da escola, centradas no uso das tecnologias da informação e comunicação optou-se pela investigação realizada com recursos e instrumentos audiovisuais. A partir dos depoimentos de pessoas que participaram direta e indiretamente da implantação dessa nova área, dentro do Colégio Pedro II, apresentamos como parte da pesquisa um documentário de 26 minutos – Imagens da Escola: A Informática Educativa no Colégio Pedro II. This paper presents a case study from the Society for the Defense of Sexual and Migrate Rivers Amazônia - Sodireitos, whose central problem is to understand how it the works the social entrepreneur of the NGO Sodireitos in defense of sexual rights and migrate rivers in Amazônia. The central objective is to analyze the practices Social Entrepreneurship at the NGO Sodireitos on sexual rights and migrate rivers. The method adopted examined the entire creation process at the NGO the present day. Primary and secondary dates were used allowing the viewing of the dynamic intervention Social Sodireitos practiced by the fields of human rights and migrate rivers. Categories of analyses were given, and possible perceive in works of the strong Sodireitos flags that converge to social entrepreneurship as a guideline in the search for a model of human development, social and mainstay vel.

Educação em direitos humanos: cidadania ou emancipação humana?

This study aims to identify the horizon of emancipation in Human Rights Education, using the philosophy of praxis as a theoretical framework, basing on authors as Tonet, Losurdo, Marx, and Saviani and Duarte, taking as a privileged locus analysis of the Plan National Human Rights Education (PNEDH, 2007). The discussion about the historical development of the movement of the struggles for human rights was a starting point to indicate how, in general, these struggles have been developing since the context of bourgeois revolutions. From there we tried to discuss how the prospect of citizenship has been treated within the Rights Education, the latter being a reflection of social movements' struggles for rights from the year 1980. Situating this movement within a larger movement on the issue of education in Brazil in the twentieth century, we tried to discuss the flags such as citizenship, the strengthening of civil society and creating a culture of rights as a goal of emancipation. Seeking to differentiate between citizenship as political emancipation and human emancipation, was placed the imperative to take the citizenship as a mediator and not as an endpoint in order to equip a culture of struggle for a classless society without exploitation of man by man

Movimento estudantil: a juventude brasileira em 1968 e em 2008 a partir das ocupações da Universidade de Brasília

The hypothesis guiding this work is that the student movement of 1968, inserted into a scene of great social movements contrary to the present political system, showed great expression in its demonstrations even considering the fact that in a dictatorship there was significant intolerance of divergent views to the military regime, which, of the student movement of 2008, inserted into a scene of mobilizations contrary to the educational system and the corruption that permeated it. The aim of this study is to investigate the myths that permeate the image of students, through a comparison between the Brazilian student movement, highlighting the students at the University of Brasilia from 1968 to 2008, with the specific objective of analyzing if the student movement lost strength of mobilizing in support of their fight flags. The question may be answered from the youth of the 1960s characterized by revolutionary, in which the possible advances and retreats performed in 40 years of history of the student movement, which seems to have lost its revolutionary feature

Given the current energy crisis experienced in our country with the lack of rain in some areas, the energy distributors were forced to resort to thermal power plants to complement their energy production; raising the cost of electricity generation, they have been forced to repass this value to the customers through the Tariff Flags. Concerned about a substantial increase in their electric bill, some consumers were forced to look for alternatives so that their results are not affected. The use of diesel generation at peak hours is a relatively simple and inexpensive alternative that has been widely used for several industrial, commercial and service customers. In this present work, we conducted a feasibility study of the use of diesel generators at peak hours in a medium-sized hospital, calculating the depreciation period for the investment through savings in electricity bills
