Few studies have examined the impact that the adoption of the secret ballot had on party system fragmentation outside the United States. This article tests arguments maintaining that the adoption of the secret ballot had a negative, positive or nil effect on party system fragmentation. Using time-series cross-sectional data from
several countries adopting the secret ballot around the turn of the twentieth century, the results demonstrate that the adoption of the secret ballot did not hinder – though did not favour, either – the development of multiparty systems.

Magnesium and zinc ferrites have been prepared by the polymeric precursor method. The organic material decomposition was studied by thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The variation of crystalline phases and particle morphology with calcination temperature were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), respectively. The colors of the ferrites were evaluated using colorimetry. Magnesium ferrite crystallizes above 800 degrees C, presenting a yellow-orange color with a reflectance peak at the 600-650 nm range, while zinc ferrite crystallizes at 600 degrees C, with a reflectance peak between 650-700 nm, corresponding to the red-brick color.

Healthy replacement heifers are one of the foundations of a healthy dairy herd. Farm management andrearing systems in Switzerland provide a wide variety of factors that could potentially be associated withintramammary infections (IMI) in early lactating dairy heifers. In this study, IMI with minor mastitispathogens such as coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS), contagious pathogens, and environmentalmajor pathogens were identified. Fifty-four dairy farms were enrolled in the study. A questionnaire wasused to collect herd level data on housing, management and welfare of young stock during farm isitsand interviews with the farmers. Cow-level data such as breed, age at first calving, udder condition andswelling, and calving ease were also recorded. Data was also collected about young stock that spent aperiod of at least 3 months on an external rearing farm or on a seasonal alpine farm. At the quarterlevel, teat conditions such as teat lesions, teat dysfunction, presence of a papilloma and teat lengthwere recorded. Within 24 h after parturition, samples of colostral milk from 1564 quarters (391 heifers)were collected aseptically for bacterial culture. Positive bacteriological culture results were found in 49%of quarter samples. Potential risk factors for IMI were identified at the quarter, animal and herd levelusing multivariable and multilevel logistic regression analysis. At the herd level tie-stalls, and at cow-level the breed category “Brown cattle” were risk factors for IMI caused by contagious major pathogenssuch as Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). At the quarter-level, teat swelling and teat lesions were highlyassociated with IMI caused by environmental major pathogens. At the herd level heifer rearing at externalfarms was associated with less IMI caused by major environmental pathogens. Keeping pregnant heifersin a separate group was negatively associated with IMI caused by CNS. The odds of IMI with coagulase-negative staphylococci increased if weaning age was less than 4 months and if concentrates were fed tocalves younger than 2 weeks. This study identified herd, cow- and quarter-level risk factors that may beimportant for IMI prevention in the future.

Research entitled “The effect of combination between CaCl2 dosage and length of electric stimulation on adult meat quality duck qualityâ€. The aim was to know the effect of combination between CaCl2 and length of electric stimulation on quality. It was conducted at Technology of Animal Production Laboratory in Animal Science Faculty, Jenderal Soedirman University on June 2nd up to August 30rd 2002. Materials used in this research were 27 Tegal duck adult. Experimental design with Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with factorial 3 x 3 was performed in this research. The first factor was CaCl2 was dosage (a1=50cc; a2=100cc; and a3=150cc) and the second factor was length of electric stimulation period (b1=10 sec; b2=20 sec; and b3=30 sec). Each experiment was repeated three times, and variable of this research were pH, tenderness, WHC and CL. The result of research shows that CaCl2 dosage (50, 100, and 150 cc); length of electric stimulation and their interaction were gave no significant effect (P>0,05) on pH, tenderness, WHC and CL in adult duck meat. Conclusion of this research was CaCl2 dosage, electric stimulation period and their interaction gave the same effect on pH, tenderness, WHC and CL adult duck meat. The hydrodechlorination of chlorobenzene over supported palladium catalysts has been studied. The palladium catalysts: deactivate as the reaction proceeds due to the HCl formed as by-product. The effect of the addition of sodium compounds has been analysed for the neutralisation of HCl. When NaOH was added to the reaction mixture, no beneficial effect was observed due to the detrimental effect of the alkaline medium on the textural and metallic properties of the catalysts. Doping the support with NaOH prior to impregnation with the metal precursor leads (after calcination and reduction) to catalysts with better activity and tolerance to deactivation, especially those obtained when using PdCl2 as the metal precursor. Low metal dispersion and the capture of chloride by forming NaCl are the: main factors contributing to the: improved catalytic properties. Finally, doping the catalysts with NaOH or NaNO3, after reduction of the metal precursor leads to a moderate increase in initial activity and final conversion, although NaOH impregnation also gave rise to support corrosion and metal dispersion modification. Three high chromium white cast irons were examined in the as-cast state to determine the effect of the carbon content on the fracture toughness. The plane strain fracture toughness K-Ic and the fracture strength were measured for each alloy. X-ray mapping was used to identify the phases on the fracture surfaces. Scanning electron fractography and optical microscopy were used to determine the volume fraction of each phase on the fracture surfaces. It was found that most fracture occurred in the eutectic carbides, but that for the alloys with a reduced volume fraction of eutectic carbides, a small amount of crack propagation occurred in the austenitic dendrites. This change in crack path correlated with an increase in fracture toughness. The Ritchie-Knott-Rice model of brittle fracture was applied. It was found to sensibly predict the critical length for fracture for each alloy. Deep etching was employed to examine the distribution of eutectic carbides. It was found that the eutectic carbides formed a continuous network in each case. (C) 2004 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

This work is concerned with the assessment of a newer version of the spout-fluid bed where the gas is supplied from a common plenum and the distributor controls the operational phenomenon. Thus the main body of the work deals with the effect of the distributor design on the mixing and segregation of solids in a spout-filled bed. The effect of distributor design in the conventional fluidised bed and of variation of the gas inlet diameter in a spouted bed were also briefly investigated for purpose of comparison. Large particles were selected for study because they are becoming increasingly important in industrial fluidised beds but have not been thoroughly investigated. The mean particle diameters of the fraction ranged from 550 to 2400 mm, and their specific gravity from 0.97 to 2.45. Only work carried out with binary systems is reported here. The effect of air velocity, particle properties, bed height, the relative amount of jetsam and flotsam and initial conditions on the steady-state concentration profiles were assessed with selected distributors. The work is divided into three sections. Sections I and II deal with the fluidised bed and spouted bed systems. Section III covers the development of the spout-filled bed and its behaviour with reference to distributor design and it is shown how benefits of both spouting and fluidising phenomena can be exploited. In the fluidisation zone, better mixing is achieved by distributors which produce a large initial bubble diameter. Some common features exist between the behaviour of unidensity jetsam-rich systems and different density flotsam-rich systems. The shape factor does not seem to have an affect as long as it is only restricted to the minor component. However, in the case of the major component, particle shape significantly affects the final results. Studies of aspect ratio showed that there is a maximum (1.5) above which slugging occurs and the effect of the distributor design is nullified. A mixing number was developed for unidensity spherical rich systems, which proved to be extremely useful in quantifying the variation in mixing and segregation with changes in distributor design.
