In dairy cattle, uterine infections are not life threatening and often unavoidable; however, they reduce fertility and increase the production costs of properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of subclinical endometritis from 32 to 70 days in milk (DIM) and its effects on the reproductive performance of crossbred dairy cows. Lactating cows (Holstein/Gir; n = 172), with no history of retained placenta, without clinical signs of uterine infection were used. The body condition score (BCS) was evaluated on a scale from 1 to 5. Ultrasound examination was performed to evaluate uterine lining and ovarian activity, while vaginal mucus was analyzed by gloved hand. The diagnosis of subclinical endometritis was performed by endometrial cytobrush technique. The samples were collected, stained, and examined microscopically; positive cases for subclinical endometritis were considered with the presence of a parts per thousand yen5 % of neutrophils. Later, the cows were submitted to conventional artificial insemination or timed artificial insemination. The incidence of subclinical endometritis in the herd was 26 %, and this was not affected by the season of calving, presence of corpus luteum, DIM, and parity. Cows with a BCS a parts per thousand currency sign2.50 had a higher incidence of subclinical endometritis. The conception rate to first insemination and pregnancy rate at 150 days postpartum were not influenced by the presence of subclinical endometritis in crossbred dairy cows.

Let G be a group, W a nonempty G-set and M a Z2G-module. Consider the restriction map resG W : H1(G,M) → Pi wi∈E H1(Gwi,M), [f] → (resGG wi [f])i∈I , where E = {wi, i ∈ I} is a set of orbit representatives in W and Gwi = {g ∈ G | gwi = wi} is the G-stabilizer subgroup (or isotropy subgroup) of wi, for each wi ∈ E. In this work we analyze some results presented in Andrade et al [5] about splittings and duality of groups, using the point of view of Dicks and Dunwoody [10] and the invariant E'(G,W) := 1+dimkerresG W, defined when Gwi is a subgroup of infinite index in G for all wi in E, andM = Z2 (where dim = dimZ2). We observe that the theory of splittings of groups (amalgamated free product and HNN-groups) is inserted in the combinatory theory of groups which has many applications in graph theory (see, for example, Serre [12] and Dicks and Dunwoody [10]).

This study evaluated the maxillary transversal changes caused by the rapid maxillary expansion (RME) accomplished by Hyrax appliance. Sixteen children from both genders were selected and treated, with ages between 7.7 to 10.8 years, who presented unilateral or bilateral posterior crossbite. Postero-anterior radiographs were taken at the beginning of the treatment, end and post-retention period. The treatment promoted an average opening of 8.8 mm of IMD (intermolar distance), 2.33 mm of IAD (interapex distance) and none of IID (interincisal distance). At the end of retention period, relapse was observed, with a decrease of 4.3 mm of IMD, 1.23 mm of IAD, a non-significant enlargement of IID (0,38 mm). These results confirm the significant influence of Hyrax appliance on transverse dimensions, represented by enlargement of IMD and IAD and its effectiveness to solve posterior crossbites.

The present study aimed to analyze the performance of 'boost' among water polo athletes. Twelve athletes (13,9  1,08 years, 169,0  6,0 cm and 59,5  13,5 kg of bodyweight) were under went to anthropometric assessment, body composition and maximum concentric strength of lower limbs. The jump test in the water was done by 'boost' and scaled to jump height. According to the results of strength (Leg Press 45: 157,08  43,30 kg Leg Extension: 72,08  12,86 kg), anthropometry (arm circumf.: 26,04  3,25 cm, thigh circumf.: 50,47  7,65 cm, sholder circumf.: 95,97  8,00 cm, elbow diam.: 4,74  0,51 cm, wrist diam.: 3,21  0,34 cm, knee diam.: 7,89  0,58 cm, biacromial diam.: 37,49  3,81 cm and bi-iliac diam.: 25,43  4,34 cm) and body composition (BMI: 20,74  4,00 kg / m² and% fat: 8,45  4,28), only stature showed a linear correlation (r= 0,595) to the values of vertical jump (height: 47,80  4,35 cm) performance. This anthropometric variable was one able to influence the height of performance by modifying it self, perhaps by maturity. However maturity may be an implicity feature of performance, since force is a concerned effect of the growth. Otherwise technique could play a mains role to the performance of the 'boost'. It can be conclude that possibly is advantageous for water polo athlete be higher and more mature for the realization of 'boost', and the training directed for the technique, but is necessary muscle fitness for the holder

To study the influence of the addition of various antioxidants and their combinations on the artifactual oxidation of cholesterol during analysis, 2 factorial experiments were performed in duplicate. In the first experiment, 2 amounts of the following antioxidants were assayed: ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) disodium salt (0 and 1 mg), pyrogallol (0 and 600 microg), and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT; 0 and 600 microg); in the second, EDTA disodium salt (0 and 1 mg), ascorbyl palmitate (0 and 600 microg), and BHT (0 and 600 microg). Under low oxidative conditions of dim light, evaporation of solvents at low temperatures, and cold saponification in darkness under nitrogen atmosphere, the addition of antioxidants showed no further protective effect. Furthermore, the presence of ascorbyl palmitate significantly increased the formation of cholesterol-5beta,6beta-epoxide, and 7beta-hydroxycholesterol.

Mouthwashes are used as an adjunct to tooth brushing for improving breath and preventing oral diseases. The aim of this study was to compare the in vitro Maximum Inhibitory Dilution (MID) of 3 mouthwashes with different active ingredients against mutans streptococci (MS). The products analyzed were PeriogardR, CepacolR and PlaxR Fresh Mint. Their antibacterial activity was assessed in duplicate in 96-well microtiter plates against 36 clinical isolates of MS. Each mouthwash was submitted to a serial two-fold dilution (1/2.5 to 1/5120) using double concentration of Tryptose Soy Broth with 1.0% yeast extract. The final volume in each well was 100 mL plus 5 mL of a bacterial suspension, equivalent to 107 CFU/mL. They were incubated microaerobically at 37oC for 48 hours and the MIDs determined. MID was 1/320 for PeriogardR and CepacolR, and 1/20 for PlaxR. Statistical analysis revealed that the MID of PeriogardR MID did not differ from that of CepacolR (p>0.05), and was higher than that of PlaxR (p<0.05). In conclusion, the antiseptic mouthwashes containing chlorhexidine (PeriogardR) and cetylpyridinium chloride (CepacolR) had higher in vitroantibacterial activity (MID) against MS than the antiseptic mouthwash containing triclosan (PlaxR), according to microbiological method employed.

Purpose: Our objective was to relate immunological data for healthy but sedentary elderly women to aerobic power, strength, and mood state. Methods: We measured peak aerobic power and one-repetition maximum strength along with mood (depression and fatigue), quality of life and carbohydrate intake on 42 women aged 60-77 years. Standard immunological techniques determined natural killer cell count and cytotoxic activity (NKCA), proliferative responses to phytohemaglutinin and OKT3, various lymphocyte subpopulations (CD3(+), CD3(-)CD19(+), CD56(+), CD4(+), CD8(+), CD56(dim) and CD56(bright)), and markers of activation, maturation, down-regulation and susceptibility to apoptosis (CD25(+), CD28(+), CD45RA(+), CD45RO(+), CD69(+), CD95(+), HLA-DR+). Results: Correlations of immune parameters with aerobic power and strength were very similar for absolute and relative immunological data. In the group as a whole, the only correlation with aerobic power was -0.35 (relative CD4(+)CD69(+) count), but in subjects with values <22.6 mL kg(-1) min(-1) correlations ranged from -0.57 (relative CD4(+)CD45RO(+)) to 0.92 (absolute CD56(dim)HLA-DR+). In terms of muscle strength, univariate correlation coefficients ranged from -0.34 (relative and absolute CD3(+)CD4(+)CD8(+)) to +0.48 (absolute CD3(+)HLA-DR+.) and +0.50 (absolute CD8(+)CD45RA(+)CD45RO(+)). Neither NKCA nor lymphocyte proliferation were correlated with aerobic power or muscle strength. Although mood state and quality of life can sometimes be influenced by an individual's fitness level, our multivariate analyses suggested that depression, fatigue and quality of life were more important determinants of immune profile than our fitness measures. Conclusions: Psychological changes associated with aging may have a substantial adverse effect upon the immune system, and immunological function may be enhanced more by addressing these issues than by focusing upon aerobic or resistance training. This study aimed to investigate which genes Cnidaria use for photoreception and test whether Gi alpha subunit protein is involved in the phototransduction cascade, giving additional tools to investigate light-mediated behaviors, as nematocyte firing. Here, I engineered an opsin gene promoter construct useful to test whether nematocyte sensory cells express opsin gene. By determining the expression of one of the unique EST opsin genes of the eyeless hydrozoan Hydra magnipapillata genome in nematocyte sensory cells, we will be able to investigate whether light modulation is an ancestral feature in Cnidaria, and whether regulation of nematocyte discharge by opsin-mediated phototransduction predated this pathway’s function in cnidarian eyes. Nematocytes, the cnidarians stinging cells, discharge nematocysts to capture prey. As nematocysts are energetically expensive, the discharge is tightly regulated and occurs after proper chemical and mechanical stimulation. Cnidarians are also known to display a rich corpus of photobehaviors, which are often associated with activities that involve nematocytes. Previous experiments on nematocyst firing modulation show that light decreases nematocyte firing. This study contributed to confirm that bright light decreases the tendency for nematocytes to discharge in Haliplanella luciae. Similar findings in cubozoan and hydrozoan lead us to believe that light modulation of cnidocytes may be an ancestral feature of Cnidaria. Experimentally, I found no evidence that pertussis toxin, a Gi alpha subunit protein inhibitor, ablates Hydra magnipapillata photobehaviour, preliminary suggesting that Gi alpha subunit protein is not involved in photoresponse. I found no significant association between pertussis toxin and nematocyte firing in Haliplanella luciae both in conditions of dim and bright light, suggesting that Gi alpha subunit protein is not involved in photoresponse. We have preliminary evidence for a prevalence of photoreception over chemoreception, tending toward conditions of bright light. This finding may suggest the involvement of a Gs alpha subunit protein in Haliplanella luciae phototransduction pathway. While nematocyte chemo- and mechano-sensitivity have been extensively studied, further research is necessary to better understand what an ancestral phototransduction cascade looked like, and how opsin-based phototransduction acts to regulate nematocyte discharge.

Mediterranean coralligenous habitats are biogenic reefs characterised by high species diversity and built mainly by encrusting calcareous red algae, growing in dim light conditions. The global climate change and several human activities may threaten species living in these habitats, especially some of those that are considered particularly relevant in structuring and in maintaining the complexity and diversity of the benthic assemblages. Among them, the red gorgonian, Paramuricea clavata (Risso, 1826), which can form dense populations, in the last decades showed worrying mass mortality events. Understand the role of this “animal forests” in the coralligenous assemblages is of fundamental importance in order to design appropriate monitoring programs and conservation policies, especially in the marine protected areas. For this purpose, benthic assemblages were studied in presence and absence of red gorgonians at two sites at the Tremiti islands. Overall, the benthic assemblages significantly differed among sites, nevertheless in both places, clear differences between assemblages associated and not associated to the gorgonian forests were found. In particular, encrusting corallinered algae were significantly more abundant in the gorgonian understories at both sites. This result indicates that the gorgonians may promote the development of calcareous algae, which are the main builders of the coralligenous habitats. Moreover species diversity resulted higher in the assemblages associated to the gorgonians. The present study highlights the role of Paramuricea clavata as a relevant ecosystem engineer in the coralligenous habitats.

Background Synchronization programs have become standard in the dairy industry in many countries. In Switzerland, these programs are not routinely used for groups of cows, but predominantly as a therapy for individual problem cows. The objective of this study was to compare the effect of a CIDR-Select Synch and a 12-d CIDR protocol on the pregnancy rate in healthy, multiparous dairy cows in Swiss dairy farms. Methods Cows (N = 508) were randomly assigned to CIDR-Select Synch (N = 262) or 12-d CIDR (N = 246) protocols. Cows in the CIDR-Select Synch group received a CIDR and 2.5 ml of buserelin i.m. on d 0. On d 7, the CIDR insert was removed and 5 ml of dinoprost was administered i.m.. Cows in the 12-d CIDR group received the CIDR on d 0 and it was removed on d 12 (the routine CIDR protocol in Swiss dairies). On d 0 a milk sample for progesterone analysis was taken. Cows were inseminated upon observed estrus. Pregnancy was determined at or more than 35 days after artificial insemination. As a first step, the two groups were compared as to indication for treatment, breed, stud book, stall, pasture, and farmer's business using chi square tests or Fisher's exact test. Furthermore, groups were compared as to age, DIM, number of AI's, number of cows per farm, and yearly milk yield per cow using nonparametric ANOVA. A multiple logistic model was used to relate the success of the protocols to all of the available factors; in particular treatment (CIDR-Select Synch/12-d CIDR), milk progesterone value, age, DIM, previous treatment of the uterus, previous gynecological treatment, and number of preceding inseminations. Results The pregnancy rate was higher in cows following the CIDR-Select Synch compared to the 12-d CIDR protocol (50.4% vs. 22.4%; P < 0.0001). Conclusion The CIDR-Select Synch protocol may be highly recommended for multiparous dairy cows. The reduced time span of the progesterone insert decreased the number of days open, improved the pregnancy rate compared to the 12-d CIDR protocol and the cows did not to have to be handled more often.
