Graphene is one of the most important materials. In this research, the structures and properties of graphene nano disks (GND) with a concentric shape were investigated by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, in which the most effective DFT methods - B3lyp and Pw91pw91 were employed. It was found that there are two types of edges - Zigzag and Armchair in concentric graphene nano disks (GND). The bond length between armchair-edge carbons is much shorter than that between zigzag-edge carbons. For C24 GND that consists of 24 carbon atoms, only armchair edge with 12 atoms is formed. For a GND larger than the C24 GND, both armchair and zigzag edges co-exist. Furthermore, when the number of carbon atoms in armchair-edge are always 12, the number of zigzag-edge atoms increases with increasing the size of a GND. In addition, the stability of a GND is enhanced with increasing its size, because the ratio of edge-atoms to non-edge-atoms decreases. The size effect of a graphene nano disk on its HOMO-LUMO energy gap was evaluated. C6 and C24 GNDs possess HOMO-LUMO gaps of 1.7 and 2.1eV, respectively, indicating that they are semi-conductors. In contrast, C54 and C96 GNDs are organic metals, because their HOMO-LUMO gaps are as low as 0.3 eV. The effect of doping foreign atoms to the edges of GNDs on their structures, stabilities, and HOMO-LUMO energy gaps were also examined. When foreign atoms are attached to the edge of a GND, the original unsaturated carbon atoms become saturated. As a result, both of the C-C bonds lengths and the stability of a GND increase. Furthermore, the doping effect on the HOMO-LUMO energy gap is dependent on the type of doped atoms. The doping H, F, or OH into the edge of a GND increases its HOMO-LUMO energy gap. In contrast, a Li-doped GND has a lower HOMO-LUMO energy gap than that without doping. Therefore, Li-doping can increase the electrical conductance of a GND, whereas H, F, or OH-doping decreases its conductance.

The effect of mistuning on the vibration of bladed disks has been extensively studied in the past 30 years. Most of these analysis typically cover the case of small variations of the elastic characteristics (mass and stiffness) of the blades. In this work we study the not so common case of the forced response of a stable rotor with damping mistuning. The Asymptotic Mistuning Model (AMM) is used to analyze this problem. The AMM methodology provides a simplified model that describes the effect of blade to blade damping variation, and gives precise information on the underlying mechanisms involved in the action of damping mistuning.

This work reports on the morphology control of the selective area growth of GaN-based nanostructures on c-plane GaN templates. By decreasing the substrate temperature, the nanostructures morphology changes from pyramidal islands (no vertical m-planes), to GaN nanocolumns with top semipolar r-planes, and further to GaN nanocolumns with top polar c-planes. When growing InGaN nano-disks embedded into the GaN nanocolumns, the different morphologies mentioned lead to different optical properties, due to the semi-polar and polar nature of the r-planes and c-planes involved. These differences are assessed by photoluminescence measurements at low temperature and correlated to the specific nano-disk geometry.

The stability of slender, axisymmetric liquid bridges held by surface tension forces between two coaxial, parallel solid disks having different radii is studied by using standard perturbation techniques. The results obtained show that the behaviour of such configurations becomes similar to that of liquid bridges between equal disks when subject to small axial gravity forces.

n this paper the influence of an axial microgravity on the dynamic stability of axisymmetric slender liquid bridges between unequal disks is numerically studied by using a one-dimensional theory. The breaking of such liquid configurations is analyzed and the dependence of some overall characteristics of the breaking process on the value of axial microgravity, the geometry and the volume of the liquid bridge, as well as stability limits are obtained.

The half antivortex, a fundamental topological structure which determines magnetization reversal of submicron magnetic devices with domain walls, has been suggested also to play a crucial role in spin torque induced vortex core reversal in circular disks. Here, we report on magnetization reversal in circular disks with nanoholes through consecutive metastable states with half antivortices. In-plane anisotropic magnetoresistance and broadband susceptibility measurements accompanied by micromagnetic simulations reveal that cobalt (Co) disks with two and three linearly arranged nanoholes directed at 45° and 135° with respect to the external magnetic field show reproducible step-like changes in the anisotropic magnetoresistance and magnetic permeability due to transitions between different intermediate states mediated by vortices and half antivortices confined to the dot nanoholes and edges, respectively. Our findings are relevant for the development of multi-hole based spintronic and magnetic memory devices.

This paper deals with the stability limits of minimum volume and the breaking of axisymmetric liquid columns held by capillary forces between two concentric, circular solid disk of different radii. The problem has been analyzed both theoreti-cally and experimentally. A theoretical analysis concerning the breaking of liquid bridges has been performed by using a one-dimensional slice model already used in liquid bridge problems. Experiments have been carried out by using milli-metric liquid bridges, and minimum volume stability limits as well as the volumes of the drops resulting after breaking have been measured for a large number of liquid bridge configurations. Experimental results being in agreement with theoretical prediction.

In this paper experimental results related to both stability an the dynamic of a asiximmetric liquid bridge between unequal disk are presented. Experiments have been performed by using a drop tower facility and the response of the liquid bridge to a sudden change of the acceleration level acting on it has bee obtained.

The effect of small mistuning in the forced response of a bladed disk is analyzed using a recently introduced methodology: the asymptotic mistuning model. The asymptotic mistuning model is an extremely reduced, simplified model that is derived directly from the full formulation of the mistuned bladed disk using a consistent perturbative procedure based on the relative smallness of the mistuning distortion. A detailed description of the derivation of the asymptotic mistuning model for a realistic bladed disk configuration is presented. The asymptotic mistuning model results for several different mistuning patterns and forcing conditions are compared with those from a high-resolution finite element model. The asymptotic mistuning model produces quantitatively accurate results, and, probably more relevant, it gives precise information about the factors (tuned modes and components of the mistuning pattern) that actually play a role in the vibrational forced response of mistuned bladed disks.
