Importing Wikipedia principles into the cultural institution of a public service broadcaster : the case of ABC Pool

Web 2.0 technologies have mobilised collaborative peer production and participatory cultures for online content creation. However, not all online communities engaging in these activities are independently facilitated and often operate within the auspices of the cultural institutions that develop and resource them. Borrowing from the principles of Wikipedia that supports collaborative online content creation and online community, ABC Pool (abc.net.au/pool) is one such institutional online community operating with the support of the Australian Public Service Broadcaster (PSB), the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). This paper explores the collaborative, creative, and governance activities of an institutional online community and how the role of the community manager is an intermediary within these arrangements.

Design minds : an online design education platform for non-designers to enact cultural change

Education in the 21st century demands a model for understanding a new culture of learning in the face of rapid change, open access data and geographical diversity. Teachers no longer need to provide the latest information because students themselves are taking an active role in peer collectives to help create it. This paper examines, through an Australian case study entitled ‘Design Minds’, the development of an online design education platform as a key initiative to enact a government priority for state-wide cultural change through design-based curriculum. Utilising digital technology to create a supportive community, ‘Design Minds’ recognises that interdisciplinary learning fostered through engagement will empower future citizens to think, innovate, and discover. This paper details the participatory design process undertaken with multiple stakeholders to create the platform. It also outlines a proposed research agenda for future measurement of its value in creating a new learning culture, supporting regional and remote communities, and revitalising frontline services. It is anticipated this research will inform ongoing development of the online platform, and future design education and research programs in K-12 schools in Australia.

Intellectual Property and Development : Theory and Practice

The book examines the correlation between Intellectual Property Law – notably copyright – on the one hand and social and economic development on the other. The main focus of the initial overview is on historical, legal, economic and cultural aspects. Building on that, the work subsequently investigates how intellectual property systems have to be designed in order to foster social and economic growth in developing countries and puts forward theoretical and practical solutions that should be considered and implemented by policy makers, legal experts and the Word Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

Amateur Media : Social, Cultural and Legal Perspectives

The rise of Web 2.0 has pushed the amateur to the forefront of public discourse, public policy and media scholarship. Typically non-salaried, non-specialist and untrained in media production, amateur producers are now seen as key drivers of the creative economy. But how do the activities of citizen journalists, fan fiction writers and bedroom musicians connect with longer traditions of extra-institutional media production? This edited collection provides a much-needed interdisciplinary contextualisation of amateur media before and after Web 2.0. Surveying the institutional, economic and legal construction of the amateur media producer via a series of case studies, it features contributions from experts in the fields of law, economics and media studies based in the UK, Europe and Singapore. Each section of the book contains a detailed case study on a selected topic, followed by two further pieces providing additional analysis and commentary. Using an extraordinary array of case studies and examples, from YouTube to online games, from subtitling communities to reality TV, the book is neither a celebration of amateur production nor a denunciation of the demise of professional media industries. Rather, this book presents a critical dialogue across law and the humanities, exploring the dynamic tensions and interdependencies between amateur and professional creative production. This book will appeal to both academics and students of intellectual property and media law, as well as to scholars and students of economics, media, cultural and internet studies.

Bloomsday: Copyright estates and cultural festivals

Copyright estates have been unduly empowered by the extension of the term of copyright protection in Europe, the United States, Australia and elsewhere. The Estate of the Irish novelist, James Joyce, has been particularly aggressive in policing his revived copyrights. The "keepers of the flame" have relied upon threats of legal action to discourage the production of derivative works based upon the canonical texts of the novelist. The Estate has also jealously guarded the reputation of the author by vetoing the use of his work in various scholarly productions. Most radically of all, the grandson Stephen Joyce threatened to take legal action to prevent the staging of "Rejoyce Dublin 2004", a festival celebrating the centenary of Bloomsday. In response, the Irish Parliament rushed through emergency legislation, entitled the Copyright and Related Rights (Amendment) Act 2004 (Ireland) to safeguard the celebrations. The legislation clarified that a person could place literary and artistic works on public exhibition, without breaching the copyright vested in such cultural texts. Arguably, though, the ad hoc legislation passed by the Irish Parliament is inadequate. The Estate of James Joyce remains free to exercise its suite of economic and moral rights to control the use and adaptation of works of the Irish novelist. It is contended that copyright law needs to be revised to promote the interests of libraries and other cultural institutions. Most notably, the defence of fair dealing should be expanded to allow for the transformative use of copyright works, particularly in respect of adaptations and derived works. There should be greater scope for compulsory licensing and crown acquisition of revived copyrights.

Chinese cultural competency and Australian law students: Reflections on the design of short term mobility programs

There is an emerging need for Australia’s law graduates to better understand the unique challenges and opportunities in our largest trading partner, China. Similarly, as China opens up to the world, its graduates are increasingly well-poised to make an indelible mark on Chinese-Australian relations, particularly in the areas of finance, property, trade and commerce. Chinese and Australian law schools must urgently develop a deeper awareness of each other’s language, culture and political systems in their graduates. The purpose of this article is to highlight the importance of Chinese cultural competency to Australian legal education and reflect on projects that enable students to attain a level of cultural competency over a short period. We do this by considering a recent ‘short term mobility project’ in Wuhan, China.

The White Possessive : Property, Power and Indigenous Sovereignty

The White Possessive explores the links between race, sovereignty, and possession through themes of property: owning property, being property, and becoming propertyless. Focusing on the Australian Aboriginal context, Aileen Moreton-Robinson questions current race theory in the first world and its preoccupation with foregrounding slavery and migration. The nation, she argues, is socially and culturally constructed as a white possession. Moreton-Robinson reveals how the core values of Australian national identity continue to have roots in Britishness and colonization, built on the disavowal of Indigenous sovereignty. Whiteness studies are central to Moreton-Robinson’s reasoning, and she shows how blackness works as a white epistemological tool that bolsters the social production of whiteness—displacing Indigenous sovereignties and rendering them invisible in a civil rights discourse, sidestepping issues of settler colonialism. Throughout this critical examination Moreton-Robinson proposes a bold new agenda for critical Indigenous studies, one that involves deeper analysis of the prerogatives of white possession within the role of disciplines.

O lugar do encontro: o Centro de Artes da Maré e a trajetória de jovens na Nova Holanda

A presente pesquisa aborda a trajetória de jovens frequentadores do Centro de Artes da Maré, equipamento cultural localizado na Nova Holanda uma das 16 comunidades que compõem o Complexo da Maré no Rio de Janeiro. Apresenta um breve histórico de configuração deste território e tem por objetivo principal perceber o significado do Centro de Artes da Maré e das atividades lá desenvolvidas na vida cotidiana de alguns jovens moradores. A pesquisa possui enfoque na perspectiva etnográfica, reforçando a importância da prática de observação e do trabalho de campo. Não parte de hipóteses fechadas e em suas considerações finais destaca aspectos tais como: identidade e pertencimento, conhecimento através da experiência e criação, mobilidade espacial e socialização, e de que forma estes aspectos fazem do CAM um espaço de convivência e promovem a conquista da cidadania cultural

Entre a lagoa e o mar: ordenamento territorial e impactos ambientais na restinga de Massambaba, Estado do Rio de Janeiro.

O objetivo desse trabalho é o ordenamento territorial em área de proteção ambiental, analisando o processo de ocupação a partir da ação de promotores imobiliários numa área natural protegida por lei. Nos últimos 20 anos, observamos o crescimento irregular e desordenado de empreendimentos imobiliários, dinamizado pelo turismo. A procura por locações para veraneio provocou rápida expansão de loteamentos habitacionais e estabelecimentos comerciais sobre longa faixa de restinga, entre 26 km de praia e complexo sistema lagunar, localizada nos municípios de Saquarema, Araruama e Arraial do Cabo, Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Essa ocupação ameaça ecossistemas remanescentes como: brejos, lagoas costeiras, manguezais e restingas que deveriam ser preservados segundo leis ambientais. Nesse universo, responderemos as seguintes questões: Como atuam os agentes sociais presentes no conflito? Qual o papel do Estado nesse processo? As leis que regem as políticas de conservação ambiental são interdependentes? Há conflitos de competências? A coleta de informações ocorreu através de análise documental, de imagens de satélite, trabalhos de campo, visitas técnicas e entrevistas com agentes sociais. Os resultados possibilitaram um mapeamento da ação desses agentes na área em estudo, suas competências e geração de mapa de uso do solo.

Deuses que dançam e conclamam a revolução: a construção da identidade de resistência em A ilha sob o mar, de Isabel Allende

Este trabalho tem como objetivo identificar os processos através dos quais a personagem Zarité, protagonista do romance A ilha sob o mar (ALLENDE, 2010), constrói sua identidade de resistência (CASTELLS, 2013). Sujeito subalterno por ser simultaneamente escrava, negra e mulher (SPIVAK, 2010), ela desenvolve estratégias verossímeis que lhe permitem sobreviver e enfrentar a opressão física e identitária típica de sua condição na colônia francesa de São Domingos, atual Haiti, que vivia, à época, sob o domínio de um modelo político e social profundamente patriarcal, escravocrata e racista. A pesquisa assume a perspectiva desenvolvida em torno da literatura de autoria feminina na América Latina (CUNHA, 2004; RAGO, 2004; VELASCO-MARÍN, 2007; WARD, 2007), segundo a qual, nessa produção específica, desenvolvem-se representações de mulher às quais são garantidas a voz e o empoderamento que lhes foram negados em outros contextos de escrita literária. Alinhando a noção de estranhamento desenvolvida pelo formalismo russo (CHKLOVSKI, 2013) com a do uso de procedimentos capazes de conferir literariedade à narrativa (LUKÁCS, 1968), este trabalho verifica a configuração de condições que conferem à obra o pertencimento ao contexto das produções desenvolvidas por autoras migrantes ou exiladas (SKAR, 2001). O conceito de hibridismo (CANCLINI, 2011) se soma a esse entendimento, articulando-se, nesta pesquisa, com a perspectiva multicultural de compreensão das identidades (HALL, 2005). Hutcheon (1991) fornece o arcabouço que nos permite o necessário trabalho com o conceito de sujeito marginalizado e ex-cêntrico. Para isso, é utilizado também o embasamento teórico oferecido por Castells (2013) no tocante ao desenvolvimento da noção de identidade de resistência. As condições históricas e econômicas sob as quais se desenvolveu o regime vigente no ambiente em que se passa a narrativa são verificadas em James (2010) e Blackburn (2003). Para lidar com a vivência religiosa e cultural experimentada pelos descendentes de africanos naquele contexto, a pesquisa se embasa nos argumentos trazidos por Capone (2011) ao debate acerca desse tema e, por intermédio dos estudos de Garauday (1980) e Lody & Sabino (2011), é possível angariar informações relativas à história e à simbologia envolvidas nas danças de origem africana. O estudo dessas correntes teóricas conduz à conclusão de que o romance A ilha sob o mar encena, na personagem Zarité, a construção de uma identidade de resistência entre os escravos que, dançando, celebravam seus deuses, permitiam o encontro das diferentes culturas das quais eram originários e fortaleciam a rede de relações, informações e colaboração mútua entre os indivíduos e as comunidades que pretendiam livrar-se do domínio do elemento europeu e de seu regime escravocrata

The effect of a combined InAlAs and GaAs strained buffer layer on the structure and optical property of InAs quantum dots

The character of InAs quantum dots (QD) directly deposited on a combined InAlAs-GaAs (XML) strained buffer layer (SBL) has been investigated. This growth technique realizes high-density QD (5.88 x 10(10) cm(-2)) by changing the thickness of GaAs in InAlAs-GaAs SBL. The dependence of the density and the aspect ratio of QD on the GaAs thickness has been discussed in detail. The photoluminescence (PL) measurements demonstrate an obvious redshift with the increase of GaAs thickness. In addition, the deposition of InAs QDs grown on the combined InAlAs-GaAs SBL has an important effect of the QD properties. The ordered QD array can be observed from the sample deposited by atomic layer epitaxy, of which the PL peak shows an obvious redshift in comparison to the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) QDs when the GaAs thicknesses are equal. Identidad territorial y paisaje. Evolución morfológica de los núcleos en Castilla y León.

Este estudio intenta esclarecer las transformaciones físicas y socioeconómicas de los asentamientos rurales de la región española de Castilla y León, durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Se analiza la evolución temporal de la forma urbana a través de un Sistema de Información Geográfico (SIG), calculando unos índices métricos y comparándolos con la información demográfica histórica. Los resultados pretenden mostrar los efectos de la especialización funcional económica, causada por la integración en las jerarquías productivas globales, sobre la estructura urbana. La pérdida gradual de las características tradicionales de los pueblos castellanos, como la compacidad y la integración en el entorno, debido a la pérdida o degradación de la arquitectura popular y la construcción de nuevas edificaciones industriales, supone un riesgo para las futuras políticas de desarrollo local. Se considera necesario preservar la identidad paisajística y evitar la destrucción del patrimonio cultural para poder revitalizar estos territorios.

Museums as a factor for the social integration of art in the community. The experience of cultural volunteering by members of the senior community

After considering museums as cultural institutions responsible for preserving cultural memory and its evolution over time, this article describes the cultural practices within our society that are aimed at disseminating art and at reproducing and transmitting culture, history and identity. Further, it considers the key role that older people are steadily assuming in Spain’s ageing society. New social-empowerment activities based on volunteering by the elderly are linked to generativity because the individual and social groups acquire new skills through those activities, thereby strengthening a society for all ages. Never in the history of social work have so many older people been prepared to participate actively at the community level, and never has a social movement with these features gone so unnoticed by so many social agents.
