Although sucking activity has been considered an essential behavior of early childhood to satisfy nutritive and non-nutritive needs, digit and pacifier sucking are deleterious oral habits that may interfere with child development. Furthermore, this clinical picture may be compounded by other concerning habits, such as self-mutilating behavior. This article reports 4-year follow-up of a child in whom non-nutritive sucking was associated with an unusual self-mutilating behavior; namely, the child would pull out her own hair after wrapping it around her finger every time she sucked on the pacifier. This occurred specially at bedtime, while she was watching TV, or when she was somewhat anxious, and remitted and recurred throughout the follow-up period. In an attempt to address this behavior, pacifier use was discontinued and the child’s head was shaved. Ultimately, the case was only solved through combined efforts involving the child, her family, and health professionals. Based on the parents’ reports and clinical examination and follow-up findings, we emphasize the importance of investigating the origin of the problem and considering emotional aspects and its association with other habits in such cases.

This paper shows the application of a hysteretic model for the Magnetorheological Damper (MRD) placed in the plunge degree-of-freedom of aeroelastic model of a wing. This hysteretic MRD model was developed by the researchers of the French Aerospace Lab. (ONERA) and describe, with a very good precision, the hysteretic behavior of the MRD. The aeroelastic model used in this paper do not have structural nonlinearities, the only nonlinearities showed in the model, are in the unsteady flow equations and are the same proposed by Theodorsen and Wagner in their unsteady aerodynamics theory; and the nonlinearity introduced by the hysteretic model used. The main objective of this paper is show the mathematical modeling of the problem and the equations that describes the aeroelastic response of our problem; and the gain obtained with the introduction of this hysteretic model in the equations with respect to other models that do not show the this behavior, through of pictures that represents the time response and Phase diagrams. These pictures are obtained using flow velocities before and after the flutter velocity. Finally, an open-loop control was made to show the effect of the MRD in the aeroelastic behavior.

In this action research study of my classroom of 10th grade Algebra II students, I investigated three related areas. First, I looked at how heterogeneous cooperative groups, where students in the group are responsible to present material, increase the number of students on task and the time on task when compared to individual practice. I noticed that their time on task might have been about the same, but they were communicating with each other mathematically. The second area I examined was the effect heterogeneous cooperative groups had on the teacher’s and the students’ verbal and nonverbal problem solving skills and understanding when compared to individual practice. At the end of the action research, students were questioning each other, and the instructor was answering questions only when the entire group had a question. The third area of data collection focused on what effect heterogeneous cooperative groups had on students’ listening skills when compared to individual practice. In the research I implemented individual quizzes and individual presentations. Both of these had a positive effect on listing in the groups. As a result of this research, I plan to continue implementing the round robin style of in- class practice with heterogeneous grouping and randomly selected individual presentations. For individual accountability I will continue the practice of individual quizzes one to two times a week.

Objective: Asthma is the most common chronic disease in childhood and has been designated a public health problem due to the increase in its prevalence in recent decades, the amount of health service expenditure it absorbs and an absence of consensus about its etiology. The relationships among psychosocial factors and the occurrence, symptomatology, and severity of asthma have recently been considered. There is still controversy about the association between asthma and a child`s mental health, since the pathways through which this relationship is established are complex and not well researched. This study aims to investigate whether behavior problems are associated with the prevalence of asthma symptoms in a large urban center in Latin America. Methods: It is a cross-section study of 869 children between 6 and 12 years old, residents of Salvador, Brazil. The International Study of Allergy and Asthma in Childhood (ISAAC) instrument was used to evaluate prevalence of asthma symptoms. The Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) was employed to evaluate behavioral problems. Results: 19.26% (n = 212) of the children presented symptoms of asthma. 35% were classified as having clinical behavioral problems. Poisson`s robust regression model demonstrated a statistically significant association between the presence of behavioral problems and asthma symptoms occurrence (PR: 1.43; 95% Cl: 1.10-1.85). Conclusion: These results suggest an association between behavioral problems and pediatric asthma, and support the inclusion of mental health care in the provision of services for asthma morbidity. Diverse levels of an inwardly rectifying potassium conductance generate heterogeneous neuronal behavior in a population of dorsal cochlear nucleus pyramidal neurons. J Neurophysiol 107: 3008-3019, 2012. First published February 29, 2012; doi:10.1152/jn.00660.2011.-Homeostatic mechanisms maintain homogeneous neuronal behavior among neurons that exhibit substantial variability in the expression levels of their ionic conductances. In contrast, the mechanisms, which generate heterogeneous neuronal behavior across a neuronal population, remain poorly understood. We addressed this problem in the dorsal cochlear nucleus, where principal neurons exist in two qualitatively distinct states: spontaneously active or not spontaneously active. Our studies reveal that distinct activity states are generated by the differential levels of a Ba2+-sensitive, inwardly rectifying potassium conductance (K-ir). Variability in K-ir maximal conductance causes variations in the resting membrane potential (RMP). Low K-ir conductance depolarizes RMP to voltages above the threshold for activating subthreshold-persistent sodium channels (Na-p). Once Na-p channels are activated, the RMP becomes unstable, and spontaneous firing is triggered. Our results provide a biophysical mechanism for generating neural heterogeneity, which may play a role in the encoding of sensory information.

In this paper, we investigate the behavior of a family of steady-state solutions of a nonlinear reaction diffusion equation when some reaction and potential terms are concentrated in a e-neighborhood of a portion G of the boundary. We assume that this e-neighborhood shrinks to G as the small parameter e goes to zero. Also, we suppose the upper boundary of this e-strip presents a highly oscillatory behavior. Our main goal here was to show that this family of solutions converges to the solutions of a limit problem, a nonlinear elliptic equation that captures the oscillatory behavior. Indeed, the reaction term and concentrating potential are transformed into a flux condition and a potential on G, which depends on the oscillating neighborhood. The fast and strong social and economic transformations in the economies of many countries has raised the competition for consumers. One of the elements required to adapt to such scenario is knowing customers and their perceptions about products or services, mainly regarding word of mouth recommendations. This study adapts, to the fast food business, a model originally designed to analyze the antecedents of the intent to recommend by clients of formal restaurants. Three constructs were considered: service quality, satisfaction, and social well-being, the latter comprised of positive and negative affections. Six hypotheses were considered, three of which relating to social well-being (that it influences satisfaction, service quality, and the intent to recommend), two relating to service quality (that in influences the intent to recommend and satisfaction), and one relating to the influence of satisfaction on the intent to recommend. None was rejected, indicating adherence and adjustment of the simplication and adaptation of the consolidated model. Through a successful empirical application, the main contribution made by this research is the simplification of a model through its application in a similar context, but with a different scope.

Cooperation plays an important role in the evolution of species and human societies. The understanding of the emergence and persistence of cooperation in those systems is a fascinating and fundamental question. Many mechanisms were extensively studied and proposed as supporting cooperation. The current work addresses the role of migration for the maintenance of cooperation in structured populations. This problem is investigated in an evolutionary perspective through the prisoner's dilemma game paradigm. It is found that migration and structure play an essential role in the evolution of the cooperative behavior. The possible outcomes of the model are extinction of the entire population, dominance of the cooperative strategy and coexistence between cooperators and defectors. The coexistence phase is obtained in the range of large migration rates. It is also verified the existence of a critical level of structuring beyond that cooperation is always likely. In resume, we conclude that the increase in the number of demes as well as in the migration rate favor the fixation of the cooperative behavior.

We consider the heat flux through a domain with subregions in which the thermal capacity approaches zero. In these subregions the parabolic heat equation degenerates to an elliptic one. We show the well-posedness of such parabolic-elliptic differential equations for general non-negative L-infinity-capacities and study the continuity of the solutions with respect to the capacity, thus giving a rigorous justification for modeling a small thermal capacity by setting it to zero. We also characterize weak directional derivatives of the temperature with respect to capacity as solutions of related parabolic-elliptic problems.

Fatigue life in metals is predicted utilizing regression analysis of large sets of experimental data, thus representing the material’s macroscopic response. Furthermore, a high variability in the short crack growth (SCG) rate has been observed in polycrystalline materials, in which the evolution and distributionof local plasticity is strongly influenced by the microstructure features. The present work serves to (a) identify the relationship between the crack driving force based on the local microstructure in the proximity of the crack-tip and (b) defines the correlation between scatter observed in the SCG rates to variability in the microstructure. A crystal plasticity model based on the fast Fourier transform formulation of the elasto-viscoplastic problem (CP-EVP-FFT) is used, since the ability to account for the both elastic and plastic regime is critical in fatigue. Fatigue is governed by slip irreversibility, resulting in crack growth, which starts to occur during local elasto-plastic transition. To investigate the effects of microstructure variability on the SCG rate, sets of different microstructure realizations are constructed, in which cracks of different length are introduced to mimic quasi-static SCG in engineering alloys. From these results, the behavior of the characteristic variables of different length scale are analyzed: (i) Von Mises stress fields (ii) resolved shear stress/strain in the pertinent slip systems, and (iii) slip accumulation/irreversibilities. Through fatigue indicator parameters (FIP), scatter within the SCG rates is related to variability in the microstructural features; the results demonstrate that this relationship between microstructure variability and uncertainty in fatigue behavior is critical for accurate fatigue life prediction.

Protein-adsorption occurs immediately following implantation of biomaterials. It is unknown at which extent protein-adsorption impacts the cellular events at bone-implant interface. To investigate this question, we compared the in-vitro outcome of osteoblastic cells grown onto titanium substrates and glass as control, by modulating the exposure to serum-derived proteins. Substrates consisted of 1) polished titanium disks; 2) polished disks nanotextured with H2SO4/H2O2; 3) glass. In the pre-adsorption phase, substrates were treated for 1h with αMEM alone (M-noFBS) or supplemented with 10%-foetal-bovine-serum (M-FBS). MC3T3-osteoblastic-cells were cultured on the pre-treated substrates for 3h and 24h, in M-noFBS and M-FBS. Subsequently, the culture medium was replaced with M-FBS and cultures maintained for 3 and 7days. Cell-number was evaluated by: Alamar-Blue and MTT assay. Mitotic- and osteogenic-activities were evaluated through fluorescence-optical-microscope by immunolabeling for Ki-67 nuclear-protein and Osteopontin. Cellular morphology was evaluated by SEM-imaging. Data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA-test, (p<0.05). At day3 and day7, the presence or absence of serum-derived proteins during the pre-adsorption phase had not significant effect on cell-number. Only the absence of FBS during 24h of culture significantly affected cell-number (p<0.0001). Titanium surfaces performed better than glass, (p<0.01). The growth rate of cells between day3 and 7 was not affected by the initial absence of FBS. Immunolabeling for Ki-67 and Osteopontin showed that the mitotic- and osteogenic- activity were ongoing at 72h. SEM-analysis revealed that the absence of FBS had no major influence on cell-shape. • Physico-chemical interactions without mediation by proteins are sufficient to sustain the initial phase of culture and guide osteogenic-cells toward differentiation. • The challenge is avoiding adsorption of ‘undesirables’ molecules that negatively impact on the cueing cells receive from surface. This may not be a problem in healthy patients, but may have an important role in medically-compromised-individuals in whom the composition of tissue-fluids is altered.

In Untersuchungen zum Umweltbewusstsein und Umweltverhalten werden die zentralen Variablen in der Regel auf der Basis von Selbstauskünften und mittels Itembatterien erhoben. Fraglich ist dabei, ob die Items zur Messung ökologischen Handelns mehr als nur \"symbolisches Verhalten\" erfassen. Bodenstein, Spiller und Elbers (1997) haben kürzlich einen Index vorgeschlagen, der sich am tatsächlichen Energie- und Materialverbrauch eines Haushalts orientiert. Wir vergleichen dieses Konzept mit anderen Skalen und untersuchen empirisch anhand der Daten des Surveys \"Umweltbewusstsein in Deutschland 1998\", in welchem Ausmaß die Ergebnisse von Regressionsmodellen des Umwelthandelns von den jeweils zugrunde gelegten Skalen abhängen. Es zeigt sich, dass gerade bezüglich der zentralen Determinanten \"Umweltbewusstsein\" und \"Einkommen\" beträchtliche Unterschiede bestehen.

Indium nitride (InN) has been the subject of intense research in recent years. Some of its most attractive features are its excellent transport properties such as its small band edge electron effective mass, high electron mobilities and peak drift velocities, and high frequency transient drift velocity oscillations [1]. These suggest enormous potential applications for InN in high frequency electronic devices. But to date the high unintentional bulk electron concentration (n~1018 cm-3) of undoped InN samples and the surface electron accumulation layer make it a hard task to create a reliable metalsemiconductor Schottky barrier. Some attempts have been made to overcome this problem by means of material oxidation [2] or deposition of insulators [3]. In this work we present a way to obtain an electrical rectification behaviour by means of heterojunction growth. Due to the big band gap differences among nitride semiconductors, it’s possible to create a structure with high band offsets. In InN/GaN heterojunctions, depending on the GaN doping, the magnitude of conduction and valence band offset are critical parameters which allow distinguishing among different electrical behaviours. The earliest estimate of the valence band offset at an InN–GaN heterojunction in a wurtzite structure was measured to be ~0.85 eV [4], while the Schottky barrier heights were determined to be ~ 1,4 eV [5].We grew In-face InN layer with varying thickness (between 150 nm and 1 mm) by plasma assisted molecular beam epitaxy (PA-MBE) on GaNntemplates (GaN/Al2O3), with temperatures ranging between 300°C and 450°C. The different doping in GaN template (Si doping, Fe doping and Mg doping) results in differences in band alignments of the two semiconductors changing electrical barriers for carriers and consequently electrical conduction behaviour. The processing of the devices includes metallization of the ohmic contacts on InN and GaN, for which we used Ti/Al/Ni/Au. Whereas an ohmic contact on InN is straightforward, the main issue was the fabrication of the contact on GaN due to the very low decomposition temperature of InN. A standard ohmic contact on GaN is generally obtained by high temperature rapid thermal annealing (RTA), typically done between 500ºC and 900ºC[6]. In this case, the limitation due to the presence of In-face InN imposes an upper limit on the temperature for the thermal annealing process and ohmic contact formation of about 450°C. We will present results on the morphology of the InN layers by X-Ray diffraction and SEM, and electrical measurements, in particular current-voltage and capacitance-voltage characteristics.

We present a combinatorial decision problem, inspired by the celebrated quiz show called Countdown, that involves the computation of a given target number T from a set of k randomly chosen integers along with a set of arithmetic operations. We find that the probability of winning the game evidences a threshold phenomenon that can be understood in the terms of an algorithmic phase transition as a function of the set size k. Numerical simulations show that such probability sharply transitions from zero to one at some critical value of the control parameter, hence separating the algorithm's parameter space in different phases. We also find that the system is maximally efficient close to the critical point. We derive analytical expressions that match the numerical results for finite size and permit us to extrapolate the behavior in the thermodynamic limit.
