The applicability of a formalism involving an exponential function of composition x1 in interpreting the thermodynamic properties of alloys has been studied. The excess integral and partial molar free energies of mixing are expressed as: $$\begin{gathered} \Delta F^{xs} = a_o x_1 (1 - x_1 )e^{bx_1 } \hfill \\ RTln\gamma _1 = a_o (1 - x_1 )^2 (1 + bx_1 )e^{bx_1 } \hfill \\ RTln\gamma _2 = a_o x_1^2 (1 - b + bx_1 )e^{bx_1 } \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ The equations are used in interpreting experimental data for several relatively weakly interacting binary systems. For the purpose of comparison, activity coefficients obtained by the subregular model and Krupkowski’s formalism have also been computed. The present equations may be considered to be convenient in describing the thermodynamic behavior of metallic solutions.

X-ray and IR studies on Nasicon solid solutions, Na1+xZr2SixP3−xO12, are carried out as a function of composition x. X-ray diffraction studies show that the unit cell volume increases as x increases and exhibits a maximum at x ≈ 2. On further increase in x the unit cell volume decreases. The infrared absorption peak positions and the splitting of these absorption peaks suggest a distortion of the PO4 and SiO4 tetrahedra. But the distortion is not large enough to change the local symmetry around the phosphorus or silicon ion from Td to C3v.

Neutron diffraction techniques have been employed to investigate the structure of PbO-PbCl2 glasses as a function of composition in the nominal range PbO.PbCl2 to 9PbO.PbCl2. It is concluded that, whereas the first Pb-O distance is well defined, the distribution of Pb-Cl distances is much broader, in agreement with a previous EXAFS study.

Electron spin resonance (ESR) of d5 ions (Fe3+ and Mn2+) has been investigated in PbO---PbF2 and PbO---PbCl2 glasses in wide ranges of composition. ESR spectra of d5 ions in these glasses exhibit significant differences which we have attributed to at least three important causes: (i) The ionic potentials of Fe3+ and Mn2+ are different. Hence Fe3+ ions tend to acquire their own environment while Mn2+ ions take up substitutional (Pb2+ ion) positions. (ii) The sizes and nephelauxetic behaviours of O2- and F- ions are similar. Thus even when there is a mixed anionic coordination, the environment of Mn2+ ions is highly symmetrical in oxyfluoride glasses. The Mn2+ spectra in oxychloride glasses are considerably different. (iii) Increase in halide ion concentration increases the ionicity of lead-ligand bonding and favours a more symmetrical environment around dopant ions in halide-rich glasses. The features in ESR spectra have been interpreted in the light of known behaviour of d5 ions in glasses and also in the context of known structural features of PbO---PbX2 glasses. Dopant ions appear to cluster at high concentrations although isolated low-symmetry sites are still observed. Effects of crystallization and annealing upon ESR spectra have also been investigated.

Radioactive particles from three locations were investigated for elemental composition, oxidation states of matrix elements, and origin. Instrumental techniques applied to the task were scanning electron microscopy, X-ray and gamma-ray spectrometry, secondary ion mass spectrometry, and synchrotron radiation based microanalytical techniques comprising X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, X-ray fluorescence tomography, and X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy. Uranium-containing low activity particles collected from Irish Sea sediments were characterized in terms of composition and distribution of matrix elements and the oxidation states of uranium. Indications of the origin were obtained from the intensity ratios and the presence of thorium, uranium, and plutonium. Uranium in the particles was found to exist mostly as U(IV). Studies on plutonium particles from Runit Island (Marshall Islands) soil indicated that the samples were weapon fuel fragments originating from two separate detonations: a safety test and a low-yield test. The plutonium in the particles was found to be of similar age. The distribution and oxidation states of uranium and plutonium in the matrix of weapon fuel particles from Thule (Greenland) sediments were investigated. The variations in intensity ratios observed with different techniques indicated more than one origin. Uranium in particle matrixes was mostly U(IV), but plutonium existed in some particles mainly as Pu(IV), and in others mainly as oxidized Pu(VI). The results demonstrated that the various techniques were effectively applied in the characterization of environmental radioactive particles. An on-line method was developed for separating americium from environmental samples. The procedure utilizes extraction chromatography to separate americium from light lanthanides, and cation exchange to concentrate americium before the final separation in an ion chromatography column. The separated radiochemically pure americium fraction is measured by alpha spectrometry. The method was tested with certified sediment and soil samples and found to be applicable for the analysis of environmental samples containing a wide range of Am-241 activity. Proceeding from the on-line method developed for americium, a method was also developed for separating plutonium and americium. Plutonium is reduced to Pu(III), and separated together with Am(III) throughout the procedure. Pu(III) and Am(III) are eluted from the ion chromatography column as anionic dipicolinate and oxalate complexes, respectively, and measured by alpha spectrometry.

A composition operator is a linear operator between spaces of analytic or harmonic functions on the unit disk, which precomposes a function with a fixed self-map of the disk. A fundamental problem is to relate properties of a composition operator to the function-theoretic properties of the self-map. During the recent decades these operators have been very actively studied in connection with various function spaces. The study of composition operators lies in the intersection of two central fields of mathematical analysis; function theory and operator theory. This thesis consists of four research articles and an overview. In the first three articles the weak compactness of composition operators is studied on certain vector-valued function spaces. A vector-valued function takes its values in some complex Banach space. In the first and third article sufficient conditions are given for a composition operator to be weakly compact on different versions of vector-valued BMOA spaces. In the second article characterizations are given for the weak compactness of a composition operator on harmonic Hardy spaces and spaces of Cauchy transforms, provided the functions take values in a reflexive Banach space. Composition operators are also considered on certain weak versions of the above function spaces. In addition, the relationship of different vector-valued function spaces is analyzed. In the fourth article weighted composition operators are studied on the scalar-valued BMOA space and its subspace VMOA. A weighted composition operator is obtained by first applying a composition operator and then a pointwise multiplier. A complete characterization is given for the boundedness and compactness of a weighted composition operator on BMOA and VMOA. Moreover, the essential norm of a weighted composition operator on VMOA is estimated. These results generalize many previously known results about composition operators and pointwise multipliers on these spaces.

The co-doping effect of Zn and Pr impurities in the compound of composition Y1-xPrxBa2[Cu1-yZny](3)O7-delta with x = 0.1, x = 0.2 and 0 <= y <= 0.1 has been investigated by analyzing the results of electrical resistivity measurements. It is found that for Pr substitution at x = 0.1, there is a minimal influence on in-plane processes, thereby slightly affecting T-c and residual resistivity rho(0), but with the resistivity slope d rho/dT becoming large for the range of y from 0.03 to 0.06, leading to a larger depinning effect. For x = 0.2 a drastic change is observed whereby rho(0) becomes abnormally large, and d rho/dT becomes negative, implying totally pinned charge stripes and no depinning. The second observation therefore suggests that Pr substitution converts the overdoped system to an optimally doped system, leading to the universal superconductor-insulator transition.

A study of vibrations of multifiber composite shells is presented. Special attention is paid to the effect of composition of different fibers on the frequency spectrum of a freely vibrating cylindrical shell. The numerical results indicate clustering of frequency spectrum of a freely vibrating cylindrical composite shell as compared with the isotropic shell, and the spectrum varies considerably with the composition of the constituent materials.

Arsenic selenide-telluride glasses have been investigated by X-ray absorption and photoelectron spectroscopy. The core electron energy shifts and chemical shifts in K-absorption edge measurements associated with the glass-crystal transitions of pure As2Se3 and As2Te3 have been studied. The effect of composition on the core level energy and valence bands of As2(Se,Te)3 glasses, has been discussed. Mixed-composition glasses are found to be considerably ionic.

Transparent glasses and glass nano crystal composites (GNCs) of various compositions in the system (100 - x)Li2B4O7-x (BaO-Bi2O3-Nb2O5) (where x = 10, 20, and 30 in molar ratio) were fabricated via splat-quenching technique. The glassy nature of the as quenched samples was established by differential thermal analyses. X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) studies confirmed the formation of layered perovskite BBN via a fluorite like phase. TEM studies revealed the presence of 10 nm sized spherical crystallites of fluorite like BaBi2Nb2O9 phase in the glassy matrix of Li2B4O7 (LBO). The influence of composition on the dielectric and the optical properties (transmission, optical band gap) of these samples has been investigated. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Sr2FeMoO6 double perovskits display low field MR at a relatively high temperature and unusual ferromagnetic properties. These compounds depicts metal to insulator transition increasing x above x(c) similar to 0.25. A comparative analysis of the near edge regions (XANES) suggests that iron is Fe3+ in the metallic range. Checking the end compounds, we found that the doped samples can be viewn as inhomogeneous distributions of the end compounds. This could help to distinguish between the two scenarios proposed to explain the metal to insulator transition. Moreover, the local atomic structure of Sr2FeMoxW1-xO6 as a function of composition (0 <= x <= 1) has been investigated by Extended X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS) a the Fe, Mo, Sr K-edges andW L-III-edge.

Main chain and segmental dynamics of polyisoprene (PI) and poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) chains in semi IPNs were systematically studied over a wide range of temperatures (above and below T-g of both polymers) as a function of composition, crosslink density, and molecular weight. The immiscible polymers retained most of its characteristic molecular motion; however, the semi IPN synthesis resulted in dramatic changes in the motional behavior of both polymers due to the molecular level interpenetration between two polymer chains. ESR spin probe method was found to be sensitive to the concentration changes of PMMA in semi IPNs. Low temperature spectra showed the characteristics of rigid limit spectra, and in the range of 293-373 K.complex spectra were obtained with the slow component mostly arisingout of the PMMA rich regions and fast component from the PI phase. We found that the rigid PMMA chains closely interpenetrated into thehighly mobile PI network imparts motional restriction in nearby PI chains, and the highly mobile PI chains induce some degree of flexibility in highly rigid PMMA chains. Molecular level interchain mixing was found to be more efficient at a PMMA concentration of 35 wt.%. Moreover, the strong interphase formed in the above mentionedsemi IPN contributed to the large slow component in the ESR spectra at higher temperature. The shape of the spectra along with the data obtained from the simulations of spectra was correlated to the morphology of the semi IPNs. The correlation time measurement detected the motional region associated with the glass transition of PI and PMMA, and these regions were found to follow the same pattern of shifts in a-relaxation of PI and PMMA observed in DMA analysis. Activation energies associated with the T-g regions were also calculated. T-50G was found to correlate with the T-g of PMMA, and the volume of polymer segments undergoing glass transitional motion was calculated to be 1.7 nm(3).C-13 T-1 rho measurements of PMMA carbons indicate that the molecular level interactions were strong in semi IPN irrespective of the immiscible nature of polymers. The motional characteristics of H atoms attached to carbon atoms in both polymers were analyzed using 2D WISE NMR. Main relaxations of both components shifted inward, and both SEM and TEM analysis showed the development of a nanometer sized morphology in the case of highly crosslinked semi IPN. Words as Events introduces the tradition of short, communicative rhyming couplets, the mantinádes, which are still sung and recited in a variety of performance situations on the island of Crete. The local focus on communicative economy and artistry is further examined in an in-depth analysis of the processes and ideals of composition. Short genres of oral poetry have been widely neglected in folklore research; however, their demand for structural and semantic coherence as well as their dialogic nature appeals to very different human needs from those of the longer poems. In contemporary Crete, poems also appear in written contexts, they are submitted to modern mass media, and people widely exchange them as text messages. By striving to understand the tradition during a period of change, this study analyzes the larger principles that ground the communication, self-expression and creativity in the genre. The aim of this research is thus twofold: to present this specific register of dialogic oral poetry as well as to create a theoretical approach sensitive to the creativity of such short registers. The study is based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Crete between the years 1997 2009. An important aspect of the methodology was to create long-term ties with a number of key-informants who composed mantinádes. The interdisciplinary theoretical and methodological basis for this analysis is in the contemporary Finnish and international research on oral poetry and on anthropological research on communicative speech genres. These theoretical insights are extended by addressing questions of spontaneity and individual agency. Since mantinádes are at the same time a model for composition and a reserve of poems in fixed form, the aesthetics and objectives of performance and composition are also plural. In a traditional singing event, the basic motivation for the singers is to provide a meaningful contribution to a selected theme, which is the shared topic of the poetic dialogue. Consequently, similar topics giving rise to poetic associations can be encountered during various moments of everyday life: the dialogic nature is embodied in the tradition to such degree that it also arises in the performances and composition of single poems and outside of any institutionalized performance arenas. Therefore, as this study discusses in detail, even the apparently non-contextualized poems recited between locals or occurring in the contemporary mass media arenas, are understood and evaluated as utterances that provide an individual perspective within a certain dialogue.

A ternary thermodynamic function has been developed based on statistico-thermodynamic considerations, with a particular emphasis on the higher-order terms indicating the effects of truncation at the various stages of the treatment. Although the truncation of a series involved in the equation introduces inconsistency, the latter may be removed by imposing various thermodynamic boundary conditions. These conditions are discussed in the paper. The present equation with higher-order terms shows that the α function of a component reduces to a quadratic function of composition at constant compositional paths involving the other two components in the system. The form of the function has been found to be representative of various experimental observations.

A thermodynamic study of the Ti-O system at 1573 K has been conducted using a combination of thermogravimetric and emf techniques. The results indicate that the variation of oxygen potential with the nonstoichiometric parameter delta in stability domain of TiO2-delta with rutile structure can be represented by the relation, Delta mu o(2) = -6RT In delta - 711970(+/-1600) J/mol. The corresponding relation between non-stoichiometric parameter delta and partial pressure of oxygen across the whole stability range of TiO2-delta at 1573 K is delta proportional to P-O2(-1/6). It is therefore evident that the oxygen deficient behavior of nonstoichiometric TiO2-delta is dominated by the presence of doubly charged oxygen vacancies and free electrons. The high-precision measurements enabled the resolution of oxygen potential steps corresponding to the different Magneli phases (Ti-n O2n-1) up to n = 15. Beyond this value of n, the oxygen potential steps were too small to be resolved. Based on composition of the Magneli phase in equilibrium with TiO2-delta, the maximum value of n is estimated to be 28. The chemical potential of titanium was derived as a function of composition using the Gibbs-Duhem relation. Gibbs energies of formation of the Magneli phases were derived from the chemical potentials of oxygen and titanium. The values of -2441.8(+/-5.8) kJ/mol for Ti4O7 and -1775.4(+/-4.3) kJ/mol for Ti3O5 Obtained in this study refine values of -2436.2(+/-26.1) kJ/mol and-1771.3(+/-6.9) kJ/mol, respectively, given in the JANAF thermochemical tables.
