In this work, we report design, synthesis and characterization of solution processable low band gap polymer semiconductors, poly{3,6-difuran-2-yl-2,5-di(2- octyldodecyl)-pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione-alt-phenylene} (PDPP-FPF), poly{3,6-difuran-2-yl-2,5-di(2-octyldodecyl)-pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1, 4-dione-alt-naphthalene} (PDPP-FNF) and poly{3,6-difuran-2-yl-2,5-di(2- octyldodecyl)-pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione-alt-anthracene} (PDPP-FAF) using the furan-containing 3,6-di(furan-2-yl)pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4(2H,5H)-dione (DBF) building block. As DBF acts as an acceptor moiety, a series of donor-acceptor (D-A) copolymers can be generated when it is attached alternatively with phenylene, naphthalene or anthracene donor comonomer blocks. Optical and electrochemical characterization of thin films of these polymers reveals band gaps in the range of 1.55-1.64 eV. These polymers exhibit excellent hole mobility when used as the active layer in organic thin-film transistor (OTFT) devices. Among the series, the highest hole mobility of 0.11 cm 2 V -1 s -1 is achieved in bottom gate and top-contact OTFT devices using PDPP-FNF. When these polymers are used as a donor and [70]PCBM as the acceptor in organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices, power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of 2.5 and 2.6% are obtained for PDPP-FAF and PDPP-FNF polymers, respectively. Such mobility values in OTFTs and performance in OPV make furan-containing DBF a very promising block for designing new polymer semiconductors for a wide range of organic electronic applications.

A benzothiadiazole end-capped small molecule 3,6-bis(5-(benzo[c][1,2,5] thiadiazol-4-yl)thiophen-2-yl)-2,5-bis(2-butyloctyl)pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1, 4(2H,5H)-dione (BO-DPP-BTZ) using a fused aromatic moiety DPP (at the centre) is designed and synthesized. BO-DPP-BTZ is a donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) structure which possesses a band gap of 1.6 eV and exhibits a strong solid state ordering inferred from ∼120 nm red shift of the absorption maxima from solution to thin film. Field-effect transistors utilizing a spin coated thin film of BO-DPP-BTZ as an active layer exhibited a hole mobility of 0.06 cm 2 V-1 s-1. Solution-processed bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaics employing a blend of BO-DPP-BTZ and [70]PCBM demonstrated a power conversion efficiency of 0.9%.

A series of conjugated copolymers containing fluorene or indenofluorene units alternating with oligothiophene segments, with potential interest for use as the active layer in field-effect transistors, is investigated. Atomic force microscopy analysis of the morphology of thin deposits shows either the formation of fibrillar structures, which are the signature of long-range π stacking, or the presence of untextured aggregates, resulting from disordered assembly. These morphologies are interpreted in terms of the supramolecular organization of the conjugated chains. Molecular modeling simulations indicate that the commensurability between the lengths of the monomer units and the presence of alkyl side groups are the two key structural factors governing the chain organization into highly ordered assemblies. The most favorable structures are those combining fluorene (indenofluorene) units with unsubstituted bithiophene (terthiophene) segments.

Organic photovoltaic devices with either bulk heterojunction (BHJ) or nanoparticulate (NP) active layers have been prepared from a 1:2 blend of (poly{3,6-dithiophene-2-yl-2,5-di(2-octyldodecyl)-pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1, 4-dione-alt-naphthalene}) (PDPP-TNT) and the fullerene acceptor, ([6,6]-phenyl C71-butyric acid methyl ester) (PC70BM). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have been used to investigate the morphology of the active layers of the two approaches. Mild thermal treatment of the NP film is required to promote initial joining of the NPs in order for the devices to function, however the NP structure is retained. Consequently, whereas gross phase segregation of the active layer occurs in the BHJ device spin cast from chloroform, the nanoparticulate approach retains control of the material domain sizes on the length scale of exciton diffusion in the materials. As a result, NP devices are found to generate more than twice the current density of BHJ devices and have a substantially greater overall efficiency. The use of aqueous nanoparticulate dispersions offers a promising approach to control the donor acceptor morphology on the nanoscale with the benefit of environmentally- friendly, solution-based fabrication. © 2014 the Owner Societies.

Bulk heterojunction organic solar cells based on poly[4,7-bis(3- dodecylthiophene-2-yl) benzothiadiazole-co-benzothiadiazole] and [6,6]-phenyl C71-butyric acid methyl ester are investigated. A prominent kink is observed in the fourth quadrant of the current density-voltage (J-V) response. Annealing the active layer prior to cathode deposition eliminates the kink. The kink is attributed to an extraction barrier. The J-V response in these devices is well described by a power law. This behavior is attributed to an imbalance in charge carrier mobility. An expected photocurrent for the device displaying a kink in the J-V response is determined by fitting to a power law. The difference between the expected and measured photocurrent allows for the determination of a voltage drop within the device. Under simulated 1 sun irradiance, the peak voltage drop and contact resistance at short circuit are 0.14 V and 90 Ω, respectively. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

One of the hallmarks of cancer is the ability to activate invasion and metastasis (Hanahan et al., 2011). Cancer morbidity and mortality are largely related to the spread of the primary, localised tumour to adjacent and distant sites (Pantel et al., 2004). Appropriate management and treatment decisions of predicting metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis is thus crucial, which supports better understanding of the metastatic process. There are common events that occur during metastasis: dissociation from the primary tumour mass, reorganisation/remodelling of extracellular matrix, cell migration, recognition and transversal of endothelial cells and the vascular circulation and lodgement and proliferation within ectopic stroma (Wells, 2006). One of the key and initial events is the increased capability of cancer cells to move, escaping the regulation of normal physiological control. The cellular cytoskeleton plays an important role in cancer cell motility and active cytoskeletal rearrangement can result in metastatic disease. This active change in cytoskeletal dynamics results in manipulation of plasma membrane and cellular balance between cellular adhesion and motility which in turn determines cancer cell movement. Members of the tetraspanins play important roles in regulation of cancer migration and cancer-endothelial cell interactions, which are critical for cancer invasion and metastasis. Their involvements in active cytoskeletal dynamics, cancer metastasis and potential clinical application will be discussed in this review. In particular, tetraspanin member, CD151, is highlighted for its major role in cancer invasion and metastasis

Flexible multilayer electrodes that combine high transparency, high conductivity, and efficient charge extraction have been deposited, characterised and used as the anode in organic solar cells. The anode consists of an AZO/Ag/AZO stack plus a very thin oxide interlayer whose ionization potential is fine-tuned by manipulating its gap state density to optimise charge transfer with the bulk heterojunction active layer consisting of poly(n-3- hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) and phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:BC61BM). The deposition method for the stack was compatible with the low temperatures required for polymer substrates. Optimisation of the electrode stack was achieved by modelling the optical and electrical properties of the device and a power conversion efficiency of 2.9% under AM1.5 illumination compared to 3.0% with an ITO-only anode and 3.5% for an ITO:PEDOT electrode. Dark I-V reverse bias characteristics indicate very low densities of occupied buffer states close to the HOMO level of the hole conductor, despite observed ionization potential being high enough. Their elimination should raise efficiency to that with ITO:PEDOT.

Target-tilted room temperature sputtering of aluminium doped zinc oxide (AZO) provides transparent conducting electrodes with sheet resistances of <10 Ω □-1 and average transmittance in the visible region of up to 84%. The properties of the AZO electrode are found to be strongly dependent on the target-tilting angle and film thickness. The AZO electrodes showed comparable performance to commercial indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes in organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices. OPV devices containing a bulk heterojunction active layer comprised of poly(3-n-hexylthiophene) (P3HT):phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and an AZO transparent conducting electrode had a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of up to 2.5% with those containing ITO giving a PCE of 2.6%. These results demonstrate that AZO films are a good alternative to ITO for transparent conducting electrodes.

In this study, a bench scale forward osmosis (FO) process was operated using two commonly available FO membranes in different orientations in order to examine the removal of foulants in the coal seam gas (CSG) associated water, the water flux and fouling behaviours of the process were also investigated. After 48 h of fouling simulation experiment, the water flux declined by approximately 55 and 35% of its initial level in the TFC-PRO and CTA-PRO modes (support layer facing the feed), respectively, while the flux decline in the TFC-FO and CTA-FO modes (active layer facing the feed) was insignificant. The flux decline in PRO modes was caused by the compounding effects of internal concentration polarisation and membrane fouling. However, the declined flux was completely recovered to its initial level following the hydraulic cleaning using deionised water. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP) and major inorganic scalants (Ca, Mg and silica) in the CSG feed were effectively removed by using the FO process. The results of this study suggest that the FO process shows promising potential to be employed as an effective pre-treatment for membrane purification of CSG associated water.

The performance of optoelectronic devices critically depends on the quality of active layer. An effective way to obtain a high quality layers is by creating excess of metal atoms through various heat treatments. Recently, rapid thermal annealing (RTA) has proved a versatile technique for the post-treatment of semiconductor materials as compared to other techniques due to its precise control over the resources. Thus, we carried out a set of experiments on SnS films to explore the influence of RTA treatment on their properties. From these experiments we noticed that the films treated at 400 °C for 1 min in N2 atmosphere have a low electrical resistivity of ~5 Ωcm with relatively high Hall mobility and carrier density of 99 cm2/Vs and 1.3 × 1016 cm−3, respectively. The observed results, therefore, emphasise that it is possible to obtain good quality SnS films through RTA treatment without disturbing their crystal structure.

In this work diketopyrrolopyrrole based copolymers (PDPP-BBT and TDPP-BBT) containing a donor-acceptor structural unit have been explored as organic Sensitizers for quasi-solid state dye Sensitized solar cells. Polymer-sensitized solar cells (PSSC) fabricated utilizing PDPP-BBT and TDPP-BBT as the active layer resulted in a typical power conversion efficiency of 1.43% and 2.41%, respectively. The power conversion efficiency of PSSCs based on TDPP-BBT With use of TiCl4-modified TiO2 photoanode was about 3.06%, attributed to the reduced back recombination reaction and more charge carriers in the external Circuit.

Using continuous and near-real time measurements of the mass concentrations of black carbon (BC) aerosols near the surface, for a period of 1 year (from January to December 2006) from a network of eight observatories spread over different environments of India, a space-time synthesis is generated. The strong seasonal variations observed, with a winter high and summer low, are attributed to the combined effects of changes in synoptic air mass types, modulated strongly by the atmospheric boundary layer dynamics. Spatial distribution shows much higher BC concentration over the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) than the peninsular Indian stations. These were examined against the simulations using two chemical transport models, GOCART (Goddard Global Ozone Chemistry Aerosol Radiation and Transport) and CHIMERE for the first time over Indian region. Both the model simulations significantly deviated from the measurements at all the stations; more so during the winter and pre-monsoon seasons and over mega cities. However, the CHIMERE model simulations show better agreement compared with the measurements. Notwithstanding this, both the models captured the temporal variations; at seasonal and subseasonal timescales and the natural variabilities (intra-seasonal oscillations) fairly well, especially at the off-equatorial stations. It is hypothesized that an improvement in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) parameterization scheme for tropical environment might lead to better results with GOCART.

In this work, we have prepared two donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) pi-conjugated oligomers to investigate the effect of phase separation on the performance of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. These charge transfer low band gap pi-conjugated oligomers (TTB and NMeTTB) were synthesized by Knoevenagel condensation of terthiophenecarbaldehyde and barbiturate appended pyran derivative. The thin film morphology of both the oligomers and along with electron acceptor 6,6]-phenyl-C60-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The blend of NMeTTB and PC61BM thin film yield highly ordered thin film, whereas there was clear phase separation between TTB and PC61BM in thin film. The BHJ solar cell was fabricated using a blend of NMeTTB and TTB with PC61BM acceptor in 1:1 ratio as active layer, and a power conversion efficiency of 1.8% was obtained. This device characteristic was compared with device having TTB:PC61BM as active layer, and large difference is observed in photocurrents. This poor performance of TTB in BHJ devices was attributed to the difference in the nanoscale morphology of the corresponding derivatives. We rationalize our findings based on the low charge carrier mobility in organic field-effect transistors and miscibility/phase separation parameter of binary components (oligomers and PC61BM) in the active layer of bulk heterojunction solar cells.

Organic bulk heterojunction solar cells were fabricated under identical experimental conditions, except by varying the solvent polarity used for spin coating the active layer components and their performance was evaluated systematically. Results showed that presence of nitrobenzene-chlorobenzene composition governs the morphology of active layer formed, which is due to the tuning of solvent polarity as well as the resulting solubility of the P3HT:PCBM blend. Trace amount of nitrobenzene favoured the formation of better organised P3HT domains, as evident from conductive AFM, tapping mode AFM and surface, and cross-sectional SEM analysis. The higher interfacial surface area thus generated produced cells with high efficiency. But, an increase in the nitrobenzene composition leads to a decrease in cell performance, which is due to the formation of an active layer with larger size polymer domain networks with poor charge separation possibility. Optical transport behavior of organic photo-voltaic devices with nano-pillar transparent electrodes is investigated in this paper in order to understand possible enhancement of their charge-collection efficiency. Modeling and simulations of optical transport due to this architecture show an interesting regime of length-scale dependent optical characteristics. An electromagnetic wave propagation model is employed with simulation objectives toward understanding the mechanism of optical scattering and waveguide effects due to the nano-pillars and effective transmission through the active layer. Partial filling of gaps between the nano-pillars due to the nano-fabrication process is taken into consideration. Observations made in this paper will facilitate appropriate design rules for nano-pillar electrodes. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.
