Road Safety Audit for County Road X-37, from the Intersection of G-62 to the East Corporate Limits of Columbus City in Louisa County, Iowa, 2009

A road safety audit was conducted for a 7.75 mile section of County Road X-37 in Louisa County, Iowa. In 2006, the average annual daily traffic on this roadway was found to be 680 vehicles per day. Using crash data from 2001 to 2007, the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) has identified this roadway as being in the highest 5% of local rural roads in Iowa for single-vehicle runoff- road crashes. Considering these safety data, the Louisa County Engineer requested that a road safety audit be conducted to identify areas of safety concerns and recommend low-cost mitigation to address those concerns. Staff and officials from the Iowa DOT, Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau, Federal Highway Administration, Institute for Transportation, and local law enforcement and transportation agencies met to review crash data and discuss potential safety improvements to this segment of X-37. This report outlines the findings and recommendations of the road safety audit team to address the safety concerns on this X-37 corridor and explain several selected mitigation strategies.

Marcadores Pragmáticos en lasTraducciones Rusas de la novela de P.G.Wodhouse “Right Ho, Jeeves”

Este trabajo se enfoca en la traslación de los marcadores pragmáticos en las traducciones rusas de "Right Ho, Jeeves" de P.G. Wodehouse. Aún siendo vacíos semánticamente y opcionales gramaticalmente, estas unidades son indispensables desde el punto de vista pragmático ya que desempeñan muchas funciones en los ámbitos textual e interpersonal. Como son multifuncionales y polisémicos, las equivalencias dadas en los diccionarios bilingües no alcanzan todas las situaciones comunicativas en que se utilizan. Son buenos indicadores que permiten observar la transferencia tanto de las peculiaridades discursivas como del retrato de la relación interpersonal de los protagonistas, dos componentes clave del humor de la novela analizada. El grado de conservación de la carga pragmática y del nivel de formalidad repecute en la construcción del caracter del personaje y en este caso en la representación de la pareja del señor y su criado — un constructo literario que varía según la cultura.

A minimal i-motif stabilized by minor groove G:T:G:T tetrads

The repetitive DNA sequences found at telomeres and centromeres play a crucial role in the structure and function of eukaryotic chromosomes. This role may be related to the tendency observed in many repetitive DNAs to adopt non-canonical structures. Although there is an increasing recognition of the importance of DNA quadruplexes in chromosome biology, the co-existence of different quadruplex-forming elements in the same DNA structure is still a matter of debate. Here we report the structural study of the oligonucleotide d(TCGTTTCGT) and its cyclic analog dGTTTCGTT>. Both sequences form dimeric quadruplex structures consisting of a minimal i-motif capped, at both ends, by a slipped minor groove-aligned G:T:G:T tetrad. These mini i-motifs, which do not exhibit the characteristic CD spectra of other i-motif structures, can be observed at neutral pH, although they are more stable under acidic conditions. This finding is particularly relevant since these oligonucleotide sequences do not contain contiguous cytosines. Importantly, these structures resemble the loop moiety adopted by an 11-nucleotide fragment of the conserved centromeric protein B (CENP-B) box motif, which is the binding site for the CENP-B.
