The IR spectrum and B-11 and Al-27 MAS NMR spectra of Al18B4O33 are presented and discussed in relation to the possible existence of boron atoms substituting for aluminum atoms. The IR spectrum shows that the strong vibrations of the BO3 groups are present in the 1 500 similar to1 200 cm(-1) region, and very weak bands of BO4 units art present in the region from 1 000 to 1 100 cm(-1). B-11 MAS NMR spectrum indicates that the strong signal for BOB units appears in the region from delta +5 to delta +20, and the very weak signal for BO4 units is at about delta -1, while Al-27 MAS NMR spectrum shows five peaks at about delta +62, +42.1, +14, -4.7 and -6.4, originating from AlO4, AlO4, AlO5, AlO6 and AlO6, respectively, These results reveal that there are minor BO4 units in Al18B4O33, indicating that a small amount of B atoms substitute for Al atoms in the 4-fold coordination.

The electron transfer and structure of microperoxidase-11(MP-11) in solution and at electrode/solution interface were studied by electrochemical, resonance Raman and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic techniques. Results show that the central iron in heme group was six-coordinated in solution, whereas it was converted to five-coordinated state as MP-11 was adsorbed on the surface of a roughened silver electrode, due to the reorientation of MP-11 molecules. The electrochemical properties of MP-11 were directly affected by the coordination state of heme iron.

DNA interaction with cationic lipids promises to be a versatile and effective synthetic transfection agent. This paper presents the study on binding of a simple artifical cationic lipid, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), to calf thymus DNA (CT DNA) prior to the condensation process, taking methyl green (MG) as a probe. The results show that the CTAB binds to DNA through electrostatic interaction forming a hydrophobic complex, thus changing the micro-environment of duplex of DNA, so the binding state of MG and DNA is changed, and a complex CTAB-CT DNA-MG is formed. This fact suggests a new way to mediate the conformation of molecular assemblies of DNA and lipids. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The electrooxidation of vitamin D-2 (VD2) was studied by cyclic voltammetry and in situ circular dichroic (CD) spectroelectrochemistry for the first time, The mechanism of electrooxidation and some useful kinetic and adsorption parameters were obtained. The results showed that the oxidation of VD2 in ethanol solution is an irreversible diffusion controlled process following a weak adsorption of the electroinactive product at a glassy carbon electrode, which blocks the electrochemical reaction. The electrooxidation occurs mainly at the triene moieties of the VD2 molecule. The CD spectroelectrochemical data were treated by the double logarithm method together with nonlinear regression, from which the formal potential E-0 = 1.08 V, alphan = 0.245, the standard electrochemical rate constant k(0) = 4.30( +/- 0.58) x 10(-4) cm s(-1) and the adsorption constant beta = 1.77(+/- 0.25) were obtained. A novel macrocyclic compound-water soluble functional calixresorcin[4]arenes-tetra para sulfo-phenylmethyl-calixresorcin[4]are was synthesized for the first time. The photophysical properties of terbium and europium ions encapsulated in the macrocyclic ligand were studied in detail. The triplet state energy of the calixresorcin[4]arene was determined to be 24400 cm(-1) by the low temperature phosphorescence spectrum and it was found that it can sensitize both terbium ion and europium ion. The possible energy transfer process between the functional calixresorcin[4]arene and the encapsulated Tb3+ and Eu3+ was discussed. The luminescence quantum efficiency of Tb3+- calixresorcin[4]arene was calculated.

The reaction of [Cp*IrCl2](2) with dilithium 1,2-orthocarborane-1,2-diselenolate 3 leads to the green 16-electron diselenolene complex [Cp*Ir{Se2C2(B10H10)}] (4) which takes up two-electron ligands such as trimethylphosphane to give the 18-electron diselenolate derivative [Cp*Ir(PMe3)-{Se2C2(B10H10)}] (5). The molecular structures of 4 and 5 were determined by X-ray crystal structure analysis. The Se-77-nuclear shielding in 4 is lower by almost 500 ppm relative to that in 5.
