Physical activity among cancer survivors : a literature review

Aim Physical activity offers a variety of health benefits to cancer survivors, both during and post-treatment. The aim here is to review: the preferences of cancer survivors regarding exercise counselling and participation in a physical activity programme; adherence rates among cancer survivors to physical activity programmes; and predictors of adherence to exercise training.

Methods Two electronic databases, Ovid MEDLINE(R) 1950 to Present with Daily Update and SCOPUS, were used to undertake literature searches for studies examining exercise preferences of adult cancer survivors, and physical activity programmes for adults at any point of the cancer trajectory.

Results Studies suggest that, while physical activity levels are low among cancer survivors, most are interested in increasing their participation. Preferences and adherence to physical activity programmes differ across a range of demographic, medical, and behavioural variables, suggesting the importance of tailoring exercise programmes to patient-specific and disease-specific needs.

Conclusions Current evidence supports the benefits of physical activity for improving risk factors associated with cancer prognosis. Physical activity programmes developed for oncology patients and cancer survivors need to take into account the needs of the target population in order to optimise adherence, outcomes, and long-term behavioural changes in this population.

The case of children's literature : colonial or anti-colonial?

Since Jacqueline Rose published The Case of Peter Pan in 1984, scholars in the field of children’s literature have taken up a rhetorical stance which treats child readers as colonised, and children’s books as a colonising site. This article takes issue with Rose’s rhetoric of colonisation and its deployment by scholars, arguing that it is tainted by logical and ethical flaws. Rather, children’s literature can be a site of decolonisation which revisions the hierarchies of value promoted through colonisation and its aftermath by adopting what Bill Ashcroft refers to as tactics of interpolation. To illustrate how decolonising strategies work in children’s texts, the article considers several alphabet books by Indigenous author-illustrators from Canada and Australia, arguing that these texts for very young children interpolate colonial discourses by valorising minority languages and by attributing to English words meanings produced within Indigenous cultures.

Obesity in children in out-of-home care : a review of the literature

Children placed in out-of-home care are a particularly disadvantaged group in society, who have often been exposed to trauma and socioeconomic disadvantage. As a result, they experience poorer health outcomes than children in the general population, especially mental health outcomes. One health outcome that has yet to be researched thoroughly is overweight and obesity of children placed in out-of-home care. Hence, the overall goal of this paper was to review the extant literature over the last decade on weight-related issues for children in out-of-home care, with particular emphasis on overweight and obesity. The findings of the review revealed that there is a lack of rigorous Australian research in relation to prevalence rates of overweight and obesity in children in out-of-home care; there is a lack of strategies or interventions designed specifically to combat overweight and obesity in children in out-of-home care; and one of the major limitations of Australian research to date is the use of self-report measures to assess the weight status of children in out-of-home care. It was concluded that prevention and intervention strategies are needed that target children as they enter out-of-home care.

Online communities and commercialization of Chinese internet literature

This article presents a case study on roles of online communities in development and commercialization of Chinese Internet literature (CIL). Online communities are widely used in ethnic Chinese communities for publication of CIL works. Uses of online communities in publication of CIL works enhance authors’ and readers’ experience and facilitate the growth of the CIL market. In turn, the growth of the CIL market creates new business opportunities that eventually lead to CIL commercialization. Evidences from the case show that the roles of online communities on CIL commercialization are much larger than simply being a new product development platform.

Preparing interprofessional clinical learning sites : what the literature tells us

Purpose: Infusing an interprofessional perspective into healthcare education in the university setting instils a collaborative approach in the provision of patient-centred care concepts for students. The purpose of this paper is to describe how one Australian health science faculty is modernising their healthcare education curriculum to develop this approach.

Method: As part of the development process, a systematic literature review was undertaken to determine the elements required for the development of interprofessional clinical learning (IPCL) sites, including but not limited to, necessary organisational and professional considerations to effect interprofessional education (IPE).

Results: The results of this review identified four key factors for IPE development: 1) shared culture, 2) support and leadership, 3) strategic facilitation and planning, and 4) effective feedback, evaluation and dissemination of curriculum intent.

Discussion: These elements are discussed in association with curriculum change in this faculty to promote interprofessional collaboration and teaching.

Conclusion: As a result of the review, the modernisation of our IPE curriculum is being underpinned by shared understandings between faculty and clinical site health providers about IPE. Our joint goal is for appropriate preparation and sustainability of IPCL sites.

Underlying neurobiology and clinical correlates of mania status after subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation in Parkinson's Disease : a review of the literature

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a novel and effective surgical intervention for refractory Parkinson's disease (PD). The authors review the current literature to identify the clinical correlates associated with subthalamic nucleus (STN) DBS-induced hypomania/mania in PD patients. Ventromedial electrode placement has been most consistently implicated in the induction of STN DBS-induced mania. There is some evidence of symptom amelioration when electrode placement is switched to a more dorsolateral contact. Additional clinical correlates may include unipolar stimulation, higher voltage (>3 V), male sex, and/or early-onset PD. STN DBS-induced psychiatric adverse events emphasize the need for comprehensive psychiatric presurgical evaluation and follow-up in PD patients. Animal studies and prospective clinical research, combined with advanced neuroimaging techniques, are needed to identify clinical correlates and underlying neurobiological mechanisms of STN DBS-induced mania. Such working models would serve to further our understanding of the neurobiological underpinnings of mania and contribute valuable new insight toward development of future DBS mood-stabilization therapies.
