Fungidal and bacterial activity of N,N-dimethyl-4-(2,2,2-trichloro-1-(phenylamino)ethyl)aniline

N,N-dimethyl-4-((phenylamino)methyl)aniline (1) was prepared by condensation of aniline and 4-(dimethylamino)benzaldehyde [1] N,N-dimethyl-4-(2,2,2-trichloro-1-(phenylamino)ethyl)aniline (2) was synthesized by trichloromethylation of the imine (N,N-dimethyl-4-((phenylimino)methyl)aniline (1)) with trichloroacetic anhydride under microwave irradiation [2] (Sheme 1). The present work reports the study of bacterial and yeast activity for the compound 2. The bacteria used in this study are Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and the yeast are Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Candida albican.The results that we will present are the determination of minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC), by means of microdilution by plate method and the specific growth constants for this microorganism. Further studies are being performed to determine viability and cellular injury with this drug.

Comportamento alimentar em mulheres portadoras de diabetes tipo 2

OBJETIVO: Conhecer os pensamentos, sentimentos e comportamentos em relação à dieta de mulheres portadoras de diabetes tipo 2. MÉTODOS: Trata-se de um estudo descritivo exploratório, de natureza qualitativa. Foram entrevistadas oito mulheres portadoras de diabetes tipo 2 em uma Unidade Básica de Saúde do município de Ribeirão Preto, SP, em janeiro de 2003. Foi utilizada entrevista semi-estruturada para a coleta dos dados. O referencial teórico adotado foi a teoria das representações sociais. Os registros audiogravados e transcritos foram submetidos à análise temática de conteúdo. RESULTADOS: Os resultados evidenciaram dificuldade no seguimento da dieta prescrita, em função dos diversos significados associados, tais como a perda do prazer de comer e beber, da autonomia e da liberdade para se alimentar. Assim, seguir a dieta adquire caráter extremamente aversivo e cerceador, tendo representação de que realizá-la traz prejuízos à saúde. A freqüente ausência de sintomas foi citada como um dos aspectos que dificultam o seguimento da dieta. Outra dificuldade foi tocar, olhar e manipular os alimentos durante o seu preparo e não poder ingeri-los. Os alimentos doces despontaram como algo extremamente desejado. Transgressão e desejo alimentar estão igualmente presentes na vida das pessoas entrevistadas. Seguir o padrão dietético recomendado elicia tristeza, e o ato de comer, muitas vezes, vem acompanhado de medo, culpa e revolta. CONCLUSÕES: O comportamento alimentar da mulher portadora de diabetes tipo 2 é bastante complexo e precisa ser compreendido à luz dos aspectos psicológicos, biológicos, sociais, culturais, psicológicos e econômicos para maior eficácia das intervenções educativas.

Modeling Allee Effect from Beta(p, 2) Densities

In this work we develop and investigate generalized populational growth models, adjusted from Beta(p, 2) densities, with Allee effect. The use of a positive parameter leads the presented generalization, which yields some more flexible models with variable extinction rates. An Allee limit is incorporated so that the models under study have strong Allee effect.

A Novel Short-Step Synthesis of New Xanthenedione Derivatives from the Cyclization of 3-Cinnamoyl-2-styrylchromones

Novel (E)-3-aryl-4-benzylidene-8-hydroxy-3,4-dihydro-1 H-xanthene-1,9(2H)-diones are prepared by the cyclization of (E,E)-3-cinnamoyl-5-hydroxy-2-styrylchromones efficiently catalyzed with boron tribromide. The (E,E)-3-cinnamoyl-5-hydroxy-2-styrylchromones are obtained from the Baker–Venkataraman rearrangement of (E,E)-2-acetyl-1,3-phenylene bis(3-phenylacrylate), which is greatly improved under microwave irradiation.

Synthesis, structure and electrochemical behaviour of Na, Mg-II, Mn-II, Cd-II and Ni-II complexes of 3-(2-carboxyphenylhydrazone)pentane-2,4-dione

Mononuclear manganese(II) [Mn(kappa O-HL)(2)(CH3OH)(4)] (4), nickel(II) [Ni(kappa O-2, kappa N-L)(H2O)(3)] (5), cadmium(II) [Cd(kappa O-2-HL)(2)(CH3OH)(3)] (7), tetranuclear zinc(II) [Zn-4(mu-OH)(2)(1 kappa O:2 kappa O-HL)(4)(kappa O-HL)(2)(H2O)(4)] (6) and polynuclear aqua sodium(I) [Na(H2O)(2)(mu-H2O)(2)](n)(HL)(n) (2) and magnesium(II) [Mg(OH)(H2O)(mu-H2O)(2)](n)(-HL)(n) (3) complexes were synthesized using 3-(2-carboxyphenyl-hydrazone)pentane-2,4-dione (H2L, 1) as a ligand precursor. The complexes were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR, H-1 and C-13 NMR (for 2, 3, 6 and 7) spectroscopies. Mono- or dianionic deprotonated derivatives of H2L display different coordination modes and lead to topologies and nuclearities of the complexes depending on metal ions and conditions used for the syntheses. Extensive intermolecular H-bonds form supramolecular arrangements in 1D chains (4 and 6), 1D chains of the organic anion and 2D networks of the metal-aqua aggregates (2 and 3), 2D networks (7) or even 3D frameworks (5). Electrochemical studies, by cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential electrolysis, show ligand centred redox processes as corroborated by theoretical DFT calculations in terms of LUMO and HOMO compositions. O volume V da 2ª série do Arquivo dos Açores inclui transcrição, os sumários e os índices de mais 26 documentos do núcleo Açores do Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino. Bem vistas as coisas, até se apresentam aqui 69 novos documentos, considerando que um deles, o nº 16, uma carta do capitão general D. Antão de Almada ao secretário de estado Francisco Xavier Mendonça Furtado, inclui 43 longas listas de população das paróquias das ilhas Terceira, S. Jorge, Graciosa, Flores e Corvo, executadas sob a direção dos respetivos párocos, na base da averiguação de róis de confessados e livros de óbitos e de batismos, em conformidade com uma determinação do novo Governo Geral dos Açores, instituído em 1766. À exceção de uma representação de Manuel Furtado Teixeira de Mendonça, juiz de fora da Praia (Terceira), porventura do ano de 1780, a restante documentação respeita a um tempo curto, inferior a 3 anos, entre 11 de fevereiro de 1767 e 16 de dezembro de 1769, a certificar o acréscimo da burocratização, que decorre da aplicação das reformas pombalinas, eivadas de propósitos administrativos de uniformidade e de centralização.

Copper(II) aza-bis(oxazoline) complex immobilized onto ITQ-2 and MCM-22 based materials as heterogeneous catalysts for the cyclopropanation of styrene

A copper(II) chiral aza-bis(oxazoline) homogeneous catalyst (CuazaBox) was anchored onto the external surface of MCM-22 and ITQ-2 structures, as well as encapsulated into hierarchical MCM-22. The transition metal complex loading onto the porous solids was determined by ICP-AES and the materials were also characterized by elemental analysis (C, N, H, S), FTIR, XPS, TG and low temperature N-2 adsorption isotherms. The materials were tested as heterogeneous catalysts in the benchmark reaction of cyclopropanation of styrene to check the effect of the immobilization procedure on the catalytic parameters, as well as on their reutilization in several catalytic cycles. Catalyst CuazaBox anchored onto the external surface of MCM-22 and ITQ-2 materials were more active and enantioselective in the cyclopropanation of styrene than the corresponding homogeneous phase reaction run under similar experimental conditions. This is due to the propylation of the acidic aza-Box nitrogen. HMCM-22 was nevertheless the best heterogeneous catalyst. Encapsulation of CuazaBox on post-synthesis modified MCM-22 materials led to low activities and enantioselectivities. But reversal on the stereochemical course of the reaction was observed, probably due to confinement effect. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Biological activity and cellular uptake of [Ru(eta(5)-C5H5)(PPh3)(Me(2)bpy)][CF3SO3] complex

Anticancer activity of the new [Ru(eta(5)-C5H5)(PPh3)(Me(2)bpy)][CF3SO3] (Me(2)bpy = 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine) complex was evaluated in vitro against several human cancer cell lines, namely A2780, A2780CisR, HT29, MCF7, MDAMB231 and PC3. Remarkably, the IC50 values, placed in the nanomolar and sub-micromolar range, largely exceeded the activity of cisplatin. Binding to human serum albumin, either HSA (human serum albumin) or HSA(faf) (fatty acid-free human serum albumin) does not affect the complex activity. Fluorescence studies revealed that the present ruthenium complex strongly quench the intrinsic fluorescence of albumin. Cell death by the [Ru(eta(5)-C5H5)(PPh3)(Me(2)bpy)][CF3SO3] complex was reduced in the presence of endocytosis modulators and at low temperature, suggesting an energy-dependent mechanism consistent with endocytosis. On the whole, the biological activity evaluated herein suggests that the complex could be a promising anticancer agent. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
