The addition of calcium chloride eletrolyte to sodium polyphosphate solutions lead to Calcium polyphosphate coacervates. The effects of a thermal treatment were investigated with the objective to increase the relative stability of the obtained material. Thermogravimetry analysis indicates that coacervates became less hydrophilic and more thermally stable after the thermal treatment. Crystallization was identified through differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. Morphological changes were observed after the thermal treatment by scanning electron microscopy. N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherms suggest that both materials, thermally treated or not, display type IV isotherms, low superficial area and mesoporous structure. Stability experiments in solutions at different pH values show that the thermally treated calcium polyphosphate is relatively more stable than the non-treated coacervate.

The preparation of superparamagnetic magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)) nanoparticles by electro-precipitation in ethanol is proposed. Particle average size can be set from 4.4 to 9 nm with a standard deviation around 20%. Combination of wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and Mossbauer spectroscopy characterizations clearly identifies the particles as magnetite single-crystals (Fe(3)O(4)). Organic-inorganic hybrids formed by polyether-based chains grafted to both ends to a siliceous backbone through urea cross-linkages (-NHC=O)NH-), named di-ureasil, have been used as host for incorporation of Eu3+ in the form of EuCl3. The bulks and the thin films, both optically transparent, were characterized by excitation, absorption and emission spectroscopy. Photoluminescence results point out that the Eu3+ ions occupy, at least, two distinct local environments. Besides, the processing method (thin films or bulks) has influence on the energy levels of the hybrid host probably due to the lower degree of organization of the thin films structure. To study the influence of Ga addition on photoinduced effect, GaGeS glasses with constant atomic ratio S/Ge = 2.6 have been prepared. Using Raman spectroscopy, we have reported the effect of Ga on the structural behavior of these glasses. An increase of the glass transition temperature T(g), the linear refractive index and the density have been observed with increasing gallium content. The photoinduced phenomena have been examined through the influence of time exposure and power density, when exposed to above light bandgap (3.53 eV). Syntheses of the following complexes are reported: LnX3·6L, LnX′3·4L, LnX″3·3L and Eu(NCS)3·3L, where Ln = Nd3+, Eu3+; L = hexamethylphosphoramide (hmpa); X = ClO4 -, PF6 -; X′ = NCS-, NO3 -, Br-, ClO4 -; X″=Cl-. Spectra of the complexes of Nd3+ (absorption) and Eu3+ (emission) in dichloromethane solutions were measured. The oscillator strengths of the Nd3+ f-f absorption bands within the 11 000-30 000 cm-1 region were determined and the τλ intensity parameters were obtained according to the Judd-Ofelt formalism. Covalency parameters were also determined for the Nd3+ complexes. The intensities relationship η21 of the 5D0→7F2 and 5D0→7F1 transitions of the Eu3+ was calculated. A good correlation between τ2 and the oscillator strength of the hypersensitive band of Nd3+ was found, as well as a correlation between τ2 and η21. There are only qualitative relations between τ2 and the covalency parameter. © 1991.

Eu3+ fluorescence spectroscopy was used as a probe to study the changes in local arrangements of tin oxyhydroxide precipitate → sol → gel → glass conversion. Electronic transition intensities and 5D0 excited state lifetime variations were followed during the entire process. Excitation and dynamic emission spectra of Eu3+ ions were simultaneously used with FTIR and Raman spectroscopy to study the structural evolution during SnO2 sol → gel → xerogel conversion. Results make evident an increase of the surroundings symmetry for the Eu3+ ions dissolved in SnO2 matrix and a decrease of the amount of hydroxo groups (Sn-OH) during drying. These phenomena were associated to the pursuit of the condensation reaction after gelation. © 1994 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

In the present investigation some spectroscopic properties of several lanthanide squarate hydrates are reported. The Raman spectra show the same distinctive Jahn-Teller intensity pattern for non-totally symmetric modes, as previously observed for the free anion. In the case of the terbium salt, the Tb3+ emission is very intense even at room temperature, revealing an efficient excitation via the ligand electronic levels. The Tb3+ dilution in Gd3+ or La3+ hosts increases this excitation efficiency without any appreciable variation in the 5D4 excited-state lifetime. However, the Eu3+ emission is very weak, with excited states located above the 5D2 level (ca. 21 550 cm-1) being completely quenched at room temperature. At lower temperatures higher-lying levels are not so efficiently quenched. The broad band observed in the UV excitation spectra of Eu3+ and Tb3+ is easily assigned to an intra-ligand transition leading to ligand-to-lanthanide ion energy transfer processes. As observed for Tb3+, Eu3+ dilution in Gd3+ or La3+ hosts also increases the relative emission intensity mediated by the ligand, without variation in the 5D0 excited-state lifetime. The Eu3+ 5D0 excitation spectra show vibronic structures that can be interpreted on the basis of the data available from the vibrational spectra. An increase in the vibronic intensities is observed as the lanthanide concentration is increased. © 1994.

Thermogravimetry, derivative thermogravimetry (TG, DTG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), were used to study the thermal behaviour of mefenamic acid, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, sodium diclofenac, phenylbutazone, dipyrone and salicylamide. The results led to thermal stability data and also to the interpretation concerning the thermal decomposition. © 1996 Akadémial Kiadó.

0.7125ZrF4-0.2375(1 - xLaF3 • xLnF3)-0.05AIF3 with x = 0.01, 0.02 and 0.03 for Ln = Er and x = 0.03 for Ln = Pr, Nd glasses were studied by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction and optical spectroscopy. Avrami parameters (Ec and n) were obtained from DTA curves. With La3+ substitution a decrease in the stability against crystallization was observed. This decrease follows the order Er3+ > Nd3+ ≈ Pr3+ for 3% molar substitution. n values suggest an interface controlled growth mechanism with grain edge nucleation abler saturation. Two crystalline polymorphs of the LaZr3F15 phase were identified. With the substitution of 3 mol% of Pr3+, Nd3+ or Er3+ for La3+ only the crystallization of the rhombohedral α-LnZr3F15 phase was observed. An increase in Ω6 Judd's intensity parameter occurs with crystallization and also an increase in the 1.04 μm peak emission cross-section for Nd3+ 4I3/2 state suggesting the potential application of these glass ceramics in optical amplification devices. © 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Crystallization of binary InF3-MF2 and GaF3-MF2 (where M = Ba, Sr and Ca) glasses was studied. Characteristic temperatures and kinetic parameters E (activation energy) and n (Avrami exponent) were obtained. Stability against devitrification is discussed in terms of the above cited parameters and also of some others parameters proposed in literature. Optical properties (IR and upconversion emissions) are reported in different crystallized samples containing Nd3+. The main observation is that up conversion emission presents an enhanced sensibility to crystallization when compared to conventional emission. © 1997 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

The evolution of Eu3+ doped SnO2 xerogels to the cassiterite structure observed during sintering was studied by means of Eu3+ spectroscopy, XRD and EXAFS at the Sn K-edge. Eu3+ ions adsorbed at the surface of colloidal particles present a broad distribution of sites, typical of oxide glasses. With sintering at 300°C, this distribution is still broadened. Crystallization is clearly observed by the three techniques with increasing sintering temperature. It is found that the addition of Eu3+ limits the crystallite growth.
