Lateral interactions in visual perception of temporal signals: cortical and subcortical components

The aim of this work was to isolate and investigate subcortical and cortical lateral interactions involved in flicker perception. We quantified the perceived flicker strength (PFS) in the center of a test stimulus which was simultaneously modulated with a surround stimulus (50% Michelson contrast in both stimuli). Subjects were requested to adjust the modulation depth of a separate matching stimulus that was physically identical to the center of the test stimulus but without the surround. Using LCD goggles, synchronized to the frame rate of a CRT screen, the center and surround could be presented monoptically or dichoptically. In the monoptic condition, center-surround interactions can have both subcortical and cortical origins. In the dichoptic condition, center-surround interactions cannot occur in the retina and the LGN, therefore isolating a cortical mechanism. Results revealed both a strong monoptic (subcortical plus cortical) lateral interaction and a weaker dichoptic (cortical) lateral interaction. Subtraction of the dichoptic from the monoptic data revealed a subcortical mechanism of the lateral interaction. While the modulation of the cortical PFS component showed a low-pass temporal-frequency tuning, the modulation of the subcortical PFS component was maximal at 6 Hz. These findings are consistent with two separate temporal channels influencing the monoptic PFS, each with distinct lateral interactions strength and frequency tuning characteristics. We conclude that both subcortical and cortical lateral interactions modulate flicker perception.

Relative age effect on the reaction time of soccer players under 13 years old

O efeito da idade relativa, que consiste na vantagem obtida pelo atleta nascido mais pr��ximo ao in��cio do ano de sele����o, tem se mostrado uma vari��vel importante para o processo de sele����o de esportistas. Este estudo objetivou avaliar a influ��ncia da ��poca de nascimento no tempo de rea����o de escolha de futebolistas presentes nas categorias de base (sub 13) de clubes profissionais futebol. Participaram 76 atletas com idade de 13,36 �� 0,45 anos. Os volunt��rios foram submetidos ao teste do TRE, e os resultados categorizados conforme o semestre de nascimento (S1 ou S2). Foi empregado o teste t para a compara����o entre grupos, e an��lise de Correla����o de Pearson para verificar a exist��ncia de associa����es entre as vari��veis. Os resultados n��o indicaram diferen��as entre os grupos no tempo de rea����o (r = 0,033 e p = 0,772) e no tempo de movimento (r = 0,0073 e p = 0,530). Concluiu-se que para essa popula����o, a ��poca de nascimento n��o influencia no desempenho dessa capacidade.

O enteado, de Juan Saer: narrativa po��tica e romance hist��rico?

Em O enteado (2002), de Juan Jos�� Saer, tem-se um velho narrador que conta de forma po��tica a sua hist��ria, uma singular experi��ncia de vida. Quando jovem, ele viajava como grumete num navio que costeava a Bacia do Rio da Prata, quando presenciou o ataque s��bito e posterior massacre da tripula����o do barco pelos ��ndios da regi��o. Como ��nico sobrevivente da carnificina, �� praticamente adotado pelos selvagens, passando a conviver com eles, sem saber ao certo a raz��o de ter sido poupado. Mas a maneira de viver daqueles ��ndios revelou-se bem estranha, pois eram antrop��fagos, faziam sexo em grupo (orgias), morriam muito cedo, e a peculiar linguagem que praticavam dificultava o aprendizado da l��ngua, e, conseq��entemente, da pr��pria cultura. Assim, esse livro tacitamente promove um debate sobre a Conquista Hisp��nica da Am��rica, do ponto de vista particular de um narrador que constr��i poeticamente a sua vis��o daquele passado, que n��o diz respeito a nenhum fato hist��rico preciso. Mas, enquanto a historicidade desse texto transparece nas suas entrelinhas, a sua imanente poesia define o seu aspecto de prosa po��tica, sen��o de narrativa po��tica, tra��os que apontam para um poss��vel hibridismo liter��rio nesse romance.

Desvio de linguagem: descaminho cient��fico

Embora seja uma ideia muito divulgada, considerar a poesia como ���desvio de linguagem��� ��, do ponto de vista te��rico, uma no����o que n��o se sustenta. A ideia de ���anomalia���, nesse caso, n��o ��, na verdade, um conceito cientifi camente embasado sen��o uma met��fora do senso-comum aceita de modo denotado. As an��lises que admitem a ���anormalidade��� da fala po��tica como um postulado carecem de rigor metodol��gico e, portanto, n��o podem ser acolhidas pela lingu��stica.

Leitura e escrita como espa��os autobiogr��ficos de forma����o

A proposta inspira-se em dois aportes de refer��ncia: o espa��o biogr��fico tomado de empr��stimo de Leonor Arfuch e a vida pensada como obra de arte por Michel Foucault. Tais argumentos possibilitam um novo olhar �� produ����o de nossas pesquisas, borrando fronteiras entre ser intuitivo e ser arcabou��o te��rico-metodol��gico que venha a delinear o percurso rumo a um conhecimento que se articula. Com vistas aos g��neros discursivos, abarcados em sua pluralidade, buscando apreender um excedente da literatura, a no����o de espa��o biogr��fico vai sendo ampliada de forma a contemplar para al��m das diversas formas que tem assumido a narra����o inveterada das vidas not��veis ou obscuras, entre as quais a autobiografia moderna n��o �� sen��o um caso.

Although one cannot prevent the birth of human beings with cleft palate lesions one can adopt attitudes and various procedures entirely viable to rehabilitate and recuperate these persons through a team work composed of the facilities of a hospital, physician, dentist, psychotherapist, epeech pathologist, pedagogue and a social worker. In order to reduce the suffering of these patients we took up this work to prove that even if not in an ideal manner nevertheleses in an acceptable one we can reintegrate these persons to their families, friends and social milieu, offering them more security in their social, psychic and human relationships. We have made a review of the literature during the last three decades where we found many possibilities of prosthetic recuperations which concerns esthetics, mastication and maxillomandibular relationships beyond allowing these pacients conditions to perform satisfactory the functions of deglution and speech. We have selected and executed 5 clinical cases out of 15 pacients formely choosen looking to different prosthetic plannings. We have also shown the major contribution that the osseous integrated implants can offer to the rehabilitation and recuperation of pacients whith congenitall labio palatal lesions. To simplify the understanding we tried to discuss the most varied types of prosthesis in well defined subjects having a separate approach for each of them and we still showed that the specificity of each case leads to a specific type of rehabilitation founded om esthetics, occlusion, osseous suport, edentulous space, and above all based in the common sense and Professional integrity

A verdade em Hegel e Marx

What is truth? Is there a single truth or many? Is it absolute or relative? Hegel and Marx give some answers through their works. he hegelian and marxist outstanding guide themselves by the dialectical approach according to the singular understanding of each one. Yet, in Hegel as much as in Marx truth has to be seen in the relation between the subject and the object. Both of them make the efort to solve the dichotomy established by other tendencies about the subject and the object. he concept of process is central in their thought and this points at the historical essence of reality. However, it is plain that such a solution can only come out by the passage of the subject to the object (Hegel) and the other way around (Marx). In this way truth in Hegel and Marx has to be understood as an ongoing making process granting the exercise of freedom (Hegel) and an essentially social activity (Marx).
