Structural Health Monitoring has gained wide acceptance in the recent past as a means to monitor a structure and provide an early warning of an unsafe condition using real-time data. Utilization of structurally integrated, distributed sensors to monitor the health of a structure through accurate interpretation of sensor signals and real-time data processing can greatly reduce the inspection burden. The rapid improvement of the Fiber Optic Sensor technology for strain, vibration, ultrasonic and acoustic emission measurements in recent times makes it feasible alternative to the traditional strain gauges, PVDF and conventional Piezoelectric sensors used for Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). Optical fiber-based sensors offer advantages over conventional strain gauges, and PZT devices in terms of size, ease of embedment, immunity from electromagnetic interference (EMI) and potential for multiplexing a number of sensors. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the acoustic wave sensing using Extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometric (EFPI) sensor on a GFRP composite laminates. For this purpose experiments have been carried out initially for strain measurement with Fiber Optic Sensors on GFRP laminates with intentionally introduced holes of different sizes as defects. The results obtained from these experiments are presented in this paper. Numerical modeling has been carried out to obtain the relationship between the defect size and strain.

The free surface effects on stacking fault and twin formation in fcc metals (Al, Cu, and Ni) were examined by first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). It is found that the generalized planar fault (GPF) energies of Ni are much larger than bulk Ni with respect to Al and Cu. The discrepancy is attributed to the localized relaxation of Ni nanofilm to accommodate the large expansion of the inter-planar separation induced at the fault plane. The localized relaxation can be coupled to the electronic structure of Ni nanofilms. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The thermoacoustic prime mover (TAPM) is an attractive alternative as a pressure wave generator to drive Pulse Tube Cryocoolers (PTCs), by the absence of moving parts, construction simplicity, reasonable efficiency, and environmental friendly. Decreasing the resonance frequency and improving the efficiency of the TAPM are important to drive the PTCs. These are controlled by the working gas parameters other than the dimensions of TAPM. In this technical note, the experimental studies carried out to evaluate the influence of different working fluids on the performances of a twin standing wave TAPM at various operating pressures have been compared with the simulation studies of the same system using DeltaEc wherever possible. The reasonably good agreement between them indicates the utility of DeltaEc for the optimal design of TAPM with the right working fluids for practical applications. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. In this work, we construct a unified family of cooperative diversity coding schemes for implementing the orthogonal amplify-and-forward and the orthogonal selection-decode-and-forward strategies in cooperative wireless networks. We show that, as the number of users increases, these schemes meet the corresponding optimal high-SNR outage region, and do so with minimal order of signaling complexity. This is an improvement over all outage-optimal schemes which impose exponential increases in signaling complexity for every new network user. Our schemes, which are based on commutative algebras of normal matrices, satisfy the outage-related information theoretic criteria, the duplex-related coding criteria, and maintain reduced signaling, encoding and decoding complexities

The crystal structure, thennal expansion and electrical conductivity of the solid solutions YOgCao.2Fel-x MnxOJ+c5 (0 ~ x ~ 1.0) were investigated. All compositions had the GdFeOrtype orthorhombic perovskite structure with trace amounts of a second phase present in case of x = 0.8 and 1.0. The lattice parameters were detennined at room tempe'rature by using X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD). The pseudocubic lattice constant decreased with increasing x. The average I inear thermal expansion coefficient (anv) in the temperature range from 673 to 973 K showed negligible change with x up to x = 0.4. The thennal expansion curve for x = I had a slope approaching zero in the temperature range from 648 to 948 K. The calculated activation energy values for electrical conduction indicate that conduction occurs primarily by the small polaron hopping mechanism. The drastic drop in electrical conductivity for a small addition of Mn (0 ~ x ~ 0.2) is caused by the preferential fonnation of Mn4t ion~ (rather than Fe4 +) which act as carrier traps. This continues till the charge compensation for the divalent ions on the A-site is complete. The results indicate that with further increase in manganese content (beyond x =0.4) in the solid solutions, there is an increase in exc :::ss oxygen and consequently, a small increase in Mn'll il>I1~, which are charge compensated by the formation of cation vancancies.

The pursuit-evasion problem of two aircraft in a horizontal plane is modelled as a zerosum differential game with capture time as payoff. The aircraft are modelled as point masses with thrust and bank angle controls. The games of kind and degree for this differential game are solved.

The basic concepts of tuned half-wave lines were covered by Hubert and Gent [1]. In this paper the problem of overvoltages during faults and the stability of the system incorporating such tuned lines are discussed. The type of tuning bank and the line arrangements that will be satisfactory from the point of view of stability are suggested. The behavior of a line tuned by distributed capacitor is analyzed, and its performance is compared with the other type of tuned line.

This paper provides additional theoretical information on half-wave-length power transmission. The analysis is rendered more general by consideration of a natural half-wave line instead of a short line tuned to half-wave. The effects of line loading and its power factor on the voltage and current profiles of the line and ganerator excitation have been included. Some of the operating problems such as charging of the line and synchronization of the half-wave system are also discussed. The inevitability of power-frequency overvoltages during faults is established. Stability studies have indicated that the use of switching stations is not beneficial. Typical swing curves are also presented.
