A series of Eu3+-doped ZnO films have been prepared by a sol-gel method. These films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and photoluminecent spectra (PL). Effects of synthetic parameters, such as annealing atmosphere, temperature and concentration of doped ions, on the highly oriented crystal growth were studied in detail. The crystalline structures of films annealed in vacuum have a wurtzite symmetry with highly c-axis orientation. A characteristic D-5(0) -> F-7(J)(J = 1, 2, 3 and 4) red emission is observed due to energy transfer from the ZnO host to the doped Eu3+ in the c-oriented ZnO films.

Nano-hydroxyapatite (HA)/poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) composite microspheres with relatively uniform size distribution were prepared by a solid-in-oil-in-water (s/o/w) emusion solvent evaporation method. The encapsulation of the HA nanopaticles in microshperes was significantly improved by grafting PLLA on the surface of the HA nanoparticles (p-HA) during emulsion process. This procedure gave a possibility to obtain p-HA/PLLA composite microspheres with uniform morphology and the encapsulated p-HA nanoparticle loading reached up to 40 wt% (33 wt% of pure HA) in the p-HA/PLLA composite microspheres. The microstructure of composite microspheres from core-shell to single phase changed with the variation of p-HA to PLLA ratios. p-HA/PLLA composite microspheres with the diameter range of 2-3 mu m were obtained. The entrapment efficiency of p-HA in microspheres could high up to 90 wt% and that of HA was only 13 wt%. Surface and bulk characterizations of the composite microspheres were performed by measurements such as wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

A novel method of grafting ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide (LLA) onto the surface of hydroxyapatite nano-particles (n-HAP) was developed. PLLA was directly connected onto the HAP surface through a chemical linkage. The PLLA-g-HAP particles could be stably dispersed in organic solvent such as chloroform for several weeks. The n-HAP particles still retained the original dimension and shape after the grafting of PLLA. Compared with the P-31 MAS-NMR spectrum of pure HAP powders, there appeared a downfield displacement of 1.2 ppm in the spectrum of PLLA-g-HAP. Fourier transformation infrared (FT-IR) spectra further confirmed the existence of PLLA on the surface of PLLA-g-HAP. The amount of grafted polymer determined by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) was about 6% in weight. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the PLLA/PLLA-g-HAP composite containing 8 wt% of PLLA-g-HAP were 55 MPa and about 10-13%, respectively, while those of the PLLA/n-HAP composites were 40 MPa and 3-5%, respectively.

ZnO nanowires, nanorods and nanoparticles through modulating the ratio of water to methanol have been synthesized by using a mild and simple solution method. The as-prepared ZnO nanostructures have been characterized by atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. With the increase of the ratio of water to methanol, the morphology of ZnO nanostructures varied form denser nanowires, to sparse nanowires, to nanorods, and then to nanoparticles. The ratio of water to methanol is supposed to play an important role in the formation of ZnO nanostructures. The mechanism of formation is related to the chemical potential, which is simply proportional to their surface ratio.

By incorporating bio-specific receptors, such as p-10,12-pentacosadiyne-1-N-(3,6,9-trioxaundecylamide)-alpha-D-mannopyranoside (MPDA), into 10,12-pentacosadiyonic acid (PDA) monolayer, the MPDA/PDA monolayer underwent affinochromatic transition in response to the bacteria binding to the receptor. Here, we described a new method to study the membrane/macromolececular interaction between Escherichia coli (E coli) and mannose and its relative affinochromism by modifying MPDA/PDA with CdS nano-crystallites (MPDA/PDA-CdS). CdS not only triggered the strong tropism of the bacteria but also reduced the rigidity of the MPDA/PDA backbone, resulting in the enhanced affinochromism. This discovery might be of significance in basic biophysical studies of membrane/macromolececular and designing novel biosensor.

"Nano-onions" with multifold alternating CdS/CdSe or CdSe/CdS structure have been synthesized via a two-phase approach. The influences of shell on photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields (QYs) and PL lifetimes are investigated and discussed. It is found that the outmost shell plays an important role in the PL QYs and PL lifetimes of the multishells "onion-like" nanocrystals. The PL QYs and PL lifetimes fluctuate regularly with CdSe and CdS shells. The PL QY increases when the nanocrystals have an outmost CdS shell; however, it decreases dramatically with the outmost CdSe shell. The trend of the change of PL lifetimes is consistent with that of the QYs. The crystal structure and composition of the novel nano-onions are characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectra techniques.

With the presence of biopolymer-sodium alginate as additive, Eu-doped ZnO (zinc oxide) urchins consisting of nanorods were synthesized through a hydrothermal route. X-ray diffraction pattern makes evident the absence of phase other than wurtzite ZnO. Upon excited by 325 nm xenon laser, such nanostructured Eu-doped ZnO urchins emit white light, which originates from the luminescence of ZnO and the intra-4f transitions of Eu3+ ions. Besides acting as stabilizing agent, sodium alginate may also sensitize the Eu3+ ions in the nanostructures and facilitate the energy transfer from the host to Eu3+ ions. ZnO and ZnO: Zn powder phosphors were prepared by the polyol-method followed by annealing in air and reducing gas, respectively. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and photoluminescence (PL) and cathodoluminescence ( CL) spectra, respectively. The results indicate that all samples are in agreement with the hexagonal structure of the ZnO phase and the particle sizes are in the range of 1-2 mu m. The PL and CL spectra of ZnO powders annealed at 950 degrees C in air consist of a weak ultraviolet emission band ( similar to 390 nm) and a broad emission band centered at about 527 nm, exhibiting yellow emission color to the naked eyes. When the sample was reduced at the temperatures from 500 to 1050 degrees C, the yellow emission decreased gradually and disappeared completely at 800 degrees C, whereas the ultraviolet emission band became the strongest. Above this temperature, the green emission ( similar to 500 nm) appeared and increased with increasing of reducing temperatures.

Many efforts have been made in fabricating three-dimensional (3D) ordered zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures due to their growing applications in separations, sensors, catalysis, bioscience, and photonics. Here, we developed a new synthetic route to 3D ZnO-based hollow microspheres by a facile solution-based method through a water-soluble biopolymer (sodium alginate) assisted assembly from ZnO nanorods. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Raman and photoluminescence spectra of the ZnO-based hollow microspheres were obtained at room temperature to investigate their optical properties. The hollow microspheres exhibit exciting emission features with a wide band covering nearly all the visible region. The calculated CIE (Commission Internationale d'Eclairage) coordinates are 0.24 and 0.31, which fall at the edge of the white region (the 1931 CIE diagram). A possible growth mechanism of the 3D ZnO superstructures based on typical biopolymer-crystal interactions in aqueous solution is tentatively proposed, which might be really interesting because of the participation of the biopolymer.
