The potential effects of early environmental conditions on adult female mate choice have been largely neglected in studies of sexual selection. Our study tested whether developmental stress affects the mate choice behaviour of female zebra finches, Taeniopygia guttata, when choosing between potential mates. In an experiment manipulating developmental condition, female zebra finches were raised under nutritional stress or control conditions. In adulthood, female preferences were assessed using extensive four-stimulus mate choice trials. Nutritional stress affected growth rates during the period of stress, with experimentally stressed females lighter than controls. During mate choice trials stressed females were almost three times less active than controls and made fewer sampling visits to the stimulus males, although we found no evidence of a direct effect of developmental experience on which males were preferred. Thus, developmental experience had a clear effect on behavioural patterns in a mate choice context. To test whether this effect is specific to a mate choice context, we also investigated the effect of developmental stress on female activity rates in three social contexts: isolation, contact with a conspecific male (a potential mate) and contact with a conspecific female. Here, female activity did not differ between the experimental treatments in any of the social situations. Overall, our findings suggest that environmental conditions during early development can have long-term context-dependent consequences for adult female mate choice behaviour, mediated by changes in activity rates.

Though constructed with different purposes, the theory of constraints and activity based costing systems pose a choice problem in respect of product mix decisions. We believe that the existing explanation of short versus long run criterion to explain firms' choice between these two systems is incomplete and offer an alternate explanation based on asset specificity. We argue that the extent to which specialized resources are deployed to make products in a mix determines the choice. We present a 2*2 matrix stating that when asset specificity is high, a firm is likely to choose ABC instead of TOC since ABC makes a large portion of costs visible to enable control. However, the choice is likely to be a TOC-ABC combination when the manufacture of asset specific products is also constrained by bottlenecks.

This paper looks at the use of constructed-response and multiple-choice questions in first year management examinations involving 2364 students over a three semester period in 2008-9. It also compares student’s performance in research and analytical assignments with their results in Multiple-Choice tests. The results show that students who perform poorly in non-multiple-choice tests are slightly advantaged by multiple-choice tests. However, students who display high distinction scores in other pieces of assessment do not receive any advantage from multiple-choice testing. Interestingly, the research also highlighted that female students perform better in their articulation of management techniques overall, but do not gain the same comparative advantage from multiple choice testing. The analysis of the assessment methods was extremely useful in predicting the level of failures for the unit in the subsequent year. Finding the right balance of assessment tasks in first year university business courses is extremely difficult, using multiple-choice tests can be useful tool as part of the assessment mix in management units.

The sustainability of the sport industry is dependent upon skilled coaches. This thesis has demonstrated that unlike the corporate setting, career development in the profession of coaching is missing from both policy and practice. This omission was found to have profound detrimental impacts on sport industry sustainability and coaches' lives.

This thesis examines how families and schools in a rural Victorian setting engage with education markets and policies of school choice. Focusing on federal funding and state conveyancing policies, the study employs policy sociology and social geographies perspectives to examine policy effects on social relations and the implications for equity.

A seven-month intensive graduate diploma of teaching course was developed in 2007 to cater for an increasing demand for qualified teachers. The course is developed to university standards and is accredited by teacher registration authorities, with graduates obtaining a qualification as a teacher at the end of the seven month period. The course is tailored to recognise and build on the existing academic attributes and capacifies expected of top tertiary graduates, and to be appropriate to academically-experienced adult learning styles. This paper will discuss the process involved in the course development. Aspects related to the student cohort demographics and leaming styles will be highlighted. A 'nested case study approach' involving both qualitative and quantitative data collection was used. Questionnaires, surveys, and interviews were used to gather the data from stakeholders (post-graduate students) involved in this aspect of the research. The analysis of the data will provide detail on the aspects of the course which enabled mature-aged students to succeed and highlight future challenges.

This paper analyses multicultural artists' perceptions of their employment and career prospects in the arts. We do this first by reviewing the relatively small body of literature on multicultural artists' careers and supplement that with a literature review of general vocational development literature. Further, we examine the degree to which multicultural artists possess the generic employability skills necessary to gain and retain employment in Australia. We use data from a small-scale qualitative study, conducted in Western Australia, which identified artists' perceptions of barriers to participation in the arts in general and to paid employment in particular. From the literature and studied data, we propose a 'Dual Responsibilities Framework for Career Management of Multicultural Artists'.

This study examines whether the structure of share ownership or firm's dividend and debt policies provide explanation for firm performances in Malaysia. Firm performance, measured as Tobin's Q is modelled in a dynamic panel framework to estimate effects of director ownership, family ownership, foreign ownership, and firm's dividend and debt policy. The generalised methods of moments (GMM) method is used to estimated the models for 80 CI components companies listed on Main Board of Malaysia observed from 1999 to 2002. The findings reveal strong evidence of positive impact of firm's dividend and debt policy on firm performance. However, ownership structure seems to be less important for market based performance of Malaysian firms: These results are expected to provide guidelines to the investors regarding the significance of firm dividend policy, leverage policy and market to book value ratio as some of the key sources of value creation for Malaysian listed firms.

Using a sample of seventy-four Chinese small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs), this paper explores the influence of ownership on human resource management (HRM) practices by SMEs. It concludes that enterprise ownership determines both strategic choice and the level of complexity in the application of HRM practices, which are more likely to be adopted by foreign-related and domestic, private-owned companies than by collective and state-owned enterprises.
