The controlling factors for the epitaxial crystallization of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) on highly oriented isotactic polypropylene (iPP) substrates have been studied in detail by means of transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The results obtained in this work indicate that the crystallization process must be considered in the investigation of epitaxial growth of polymers on polymeric substrates, because of the unique morphological and crystallization characteristics of polymers. Crystallization rate has an important effect on the epitaxial crystallization of polymers. Higher rates result in the formation of thicker epitaxial layers. Isothermal crystallization temperature is another factor affecting epitaxial growth of polymers. Lower temperatures are favorable to epitaxial crystallization of polymers. There exists a critical epitaxial temperature at given experimental conditions, above which no epitaxial growth occurs at all. The influence of crystal dimensions of both the substrates and the deposited polymers on epitaxial growth confirms that secondary nucleation is an important controlling factor for the occurrence of epitaxial crystallization in polymers. The requirement satisfying the secondary nucleation criterion is that the substrate crystal dimension in the matching direction must be greater than the crystal thickness of the deposited polymer. Once the requirement of the secondary nucleation is satisfied, subsequent epitaxial growth is based on the lamellar growth habit of the deposited polymer itself. [La(NO3)(3)(OH2)(2)(phen)]. 15-crown-5 is hexagonal, P6(5), with a = 10.955(2), c = 43.769(9) Angstrom, and D-calc = 1.668 g cm(-3) for Z = 6. In the complex, two nitrogen atoms (from phen) and eight oxygen atoms (six from three bidentate nitrate anions and two from water molecules) are coordinated to the central La(III) ion, forming a coordination polyhedron which is approximately a bicapped square antiprism. The coordinated water molecules donate hydrogen bonds to the oxygen atoms of the crown ether, forming polymeric hydrogen bonded chains which wrap helically along the unit cell direction c.

The contact angles theta of some liquids on ethylene-propylene copolymer-grafted-glycidyl methacrylate (EPM-g-GMA) were measured. The critical surface tensions r(c) of EPM-g-GMA were evaluated by the Zisman Plot (cos theta versus r(L)), Young-Dupre-Good-Girifalco plot (1 + cos theta versus 1/r(L)(0.5)) and log (1 + cos theta) versus log(r(L)) plot. The following results were obtained: the r(c) values varied significantly with the estimation methods. The critical surface tension r(c) decreased with the increase of the degree of grafting of EPM-g-GMA.

A series of copoly(ester imide)s is synthesized by thermal polycondensation of N,N'-hexane-1,6-diylbis(trimellitimide), p-hydroxybenzoic acid and diphenols with different structures. Their thermotropic liquid crystal properties are studied by DSC measurements and polarizing microscopy. II is found that the steric effect of nonlinear bisphenol modifiers is the most important factor in controlling the liquid crystallinity of the resulting copoly(ester imide)s.

LaCl3(15-crown-5), I was prepared by the reaction of LaCl(3)nH(2)O with 15-crown-5 and bipy (2,2'-bipyridyl). [LaCl2(phen)(H2O)(2)(mu-Cl)](2) .(15-crown-5). MeCN, II, was crystallized from a mixture of LaC1(3) . nH(2)O, phen (1,10-phenanthroline) and 15-crown-5 in MeOH/MeCN, Crystal structures of these two complexes have been determined by X-ray methods. The La(III) ion in I is coordinated by three Cl anions and five oxygen atoms of a crown ether. The two metal ions in II are bridged by two Cl anions and the crown ligand is hydrogen-bonded to the coordinated water molecules to form polymeric... crown/cation/cation/crown... chains.

In this paper, the electrochemical behaviour of molibdosilicic heteropoly complex with dysprosium K10H3[Dy(SiMo11O39)(2)]. xH(2)O [denoted as Dy(SiMo11)(2)] was studied. Voltammetric behavior of this complex was greatly influenced by pH of solutions. The polypyrrole (PPy) film doped with this complex was prepared by electropolymerization of pyrrole in the presence of Dy(SiMo11)(2) under potential cycling conditions. The microenvironment within the PPy film has an effect on the electrochemical behavior of Dy(SiMo11)(2) entrapped in the film. The film electrode can catalyze the reduction of ClO3- and BrO3-.

The crystal structure of thiamine iodide sesquihydrate has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods as a host-guest model for coenzyme-substrate interactions. The asymmetric unit contains two chemical units. Both the thiamine molecules A and B, which are crystallographically independent, assume the usual F conformation and have a disordered hydroxyethyl side chain. An iodide anion (or a water molecule) bridges the pyrimidine and thiazolium rings of molecule A (or B) by forming a hydrogen bond with the amino group and an electrostatic contact with the thiazolium ring to stabilize the molecular conformation. In the crystal the thiamine molecules self-associate to form a pipe-like polymeric structure, in which four thiamine hosts surround an iodide guest and hold it through C(2)-H...I hydrogen bonds and thiazolium...I electrostatic interactions. Crystal data: C12H17N4OS+.I- . 1.5 H2O, monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 12.585(2), b = 25.303(5), c = 12.030(2) angstrom, beta = 115.15(1)degrees, V = 3468(1) angtrom3, Z = 8, D(c) = 1.606 g cm-3, R = 0.045 for 3328 observed reflections.

Polycarbonate (PC) and poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) was co-extruded at different weight ratios by a single screw extruder. In order to obtain a finer blend, two times extrusion was carried out. In this case, a ''network'' structure with two-continuous phases was observed for the blends with two compositions of PC/ABS, being 80/20 and 70/30. It is found that the blends with these two compositions just have maximum values on the curves of notched Izod impact strength, flexural modulus and flexural strength vs. composition, respectively. This was never observed in previous publications.

In the structure of catena-poly[{triaqua(L-pro-line-O)erbium(III)}-bis-mu-(L-proline-O:O')-{triaqua-(L-proline-O)erbium(III)}-bis-mu-(L-proline-O:O') hexaperchlorate], each Er3+ ion is coordinated by five carboxyl O atoms from the L-proline molecules and three water molecules. Four of the SiX L-proline molecules act as bidentate bridging ligands to link the Er3+ ions through the carboxyl groups, thus producing a one-dimensional chain structure. The other two ligands coordinate unidentately to the rare-earth ions. Hydrogen bonds formed between the coordinated water molecules and between the water and unidentate proline ligand stabilize the polymeric chain.
