We propose the exploding-reflector method to simulate a monostatic survey with a single simulation. The exploding reflector, used in seismic modeling, is adapted for ground-penetrating radar (GPR) modeling by using the analogy between acoustic and electromagnetic waves. The method can be used with ray tracing to obtain the location of the interfaces and estimate the properties of the medium on the basis of the traveltimes and reflection amplitudes. In particular, these can provide a better estimation of the conductivity and geometrical details. The modeling methodology is complemented with the use of the plane-wave method. The technique is illustrated with GPR data from an excavated tomb of the nineteenth century.

We report the effect of n-n isotype organic heterojunction consisting of copper hexadecafluorophthalocyanine (F16CuPc) and phthalocyanatotin (IV) dichloride (SnCl2Pc). Their interfacial electronic structure was observed by Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM), and there is band bending in two materials, resulting in an electron accumulation region in F16CuPc layer and an electron depletion region in SnCl2Pc layer. The forming of organic heterojunction was explained by carriers flowing through the interface due to thermal emission of electrons. Furthermore, the carrier transport behavior parallel and vertical to heterojunction interface was also revealed by their heterojunction field-effect transistor with normally on operation mode and heterojunction diodes with rectifying property.

Films obtained via drying a polymeric latex dispersion are normally colloidal crystalline where latex particles are packed into a face centered cubic (fcc) structure. Different from conventional atomic crystallites or hard sphere colloidal crystallites, the crystalline structure of these films is normally deformable due to the low glass transition temperature of the latex particles. Upon tensile deformation, depending on the drawing direction with respect to the normal of specific crystallographic plane, one observes different crystalline structural changes. Three typical situations where crystallographic c-axis, body diagonal or face diagonal of the fcc structure of the colloidal crystallites being parallel to the stretching direction were investigated.

Low-cost photovoltaic energy conversion using conjugated polymers has achieved great improvement due to the invention of organic bulk heterojunction. in which the nanoscale phase separation of electron donor and acceptor favors realizing efficient charge separation and collection. We investigated the polymer photovoltaic cells using N, N'-bis(1-ethylpropyl)-3,4,9,10-perylene bis(tetracarboxyl diimide)/poly(3-hexyl thiophene) blend as an active layer. It is found that processing conditions for the blend films have major effects on its morphology and hence the energy conversion efficiency of the resulting devices. By optimizing the processing conditions, the sizes of donor/acceptor phase separation can be adjusted for realizing efficient charge separation and collection. The overall energy conversion efficiency of the photovoltaic cell processed with optimized conditions increases by nearly 40% compared to the normally spin-coated and annealed cell.

Novel silver-gold bimetallic nanostructures were prepared by seeding with silver nanoplates in the absence of any surfactants. During the synthesis process, it was found that the frameworks of silver nanoplates were normally kept though the basal plane of silver nanoplates became rugged. The real morphology of these nanostructures depended on the molar ratio of gold ions to the seed particles. When the molar ratio of gold ions to silver atoms increased from 0.5 to 4, porous or branched silver-gold bimetallic nanostructures could be made. The growth mechanism was qualitatively discussed based on template-engaged replacement reactions and seed-mediated deposition reactions. Due to the unusual structures, they exhibited interesting optical properties. Moreover, they were shown to be an active substrate for surface-enhanced Raman scattering measurements.

The interfacial tension sigma between two polyisobutylenes (PIB) of dissimilar polydispersity and two polydisperse samples of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) was measured as a function of time by means of a pendent drop apparatus at different temperatures ranging from 30 to 110 degreesC. In addition to three of the four possible binary blends, the time evolution of sigma was also determined for one ternary system, where the PIB phase contained 0.03 wt % of a diblock copolymer poly(isobutylene-b-dimethylsiloxane). The pronounced decrease of sigma with advancing time, observed in all cases, is attributed to the migration of the interfacially active lower molecular weight components of the homopolymers and of the compatibilizer into the interphase. Several days are normally required until a becomes constant. These time independent values are not considered as equilibrium data, but accredited to stationary states. A kinetic model is established for sigma(t), which enables a detailed investigation of the rates of transport of the different migrating species of average molar mass of M.

High-density polyethylene with shish-kebab structure, prepared by a melt extrusion drawing, was employed to investigate the effect of the well-defined lamellar orientation on the deformation characteristics under uniaxial tensile deformation along the drawing direction. This was done by investigating the true stress-true strain dependencies at different strain rates, recovery properties, and stress relaxation measurements. Measurements were complemented by recording in-situ wide-angle X-ray scattering patterns during the deformation process. The oriented samples showed not only a higher modulus, but different from analogous isotropic samples, a homogeneous deformation without necking. The true strain associated with the onset of fibrillation was determined. Because of the preorientation, it is shifted to 0.3, which is below the value 0.6 of the isotropic counterpart. The main finding is a strong enhancement of the Viscous force, as was revealed by stress relaxation experiments; the viscous force takes up 70% of the total stress. The presence of shish-kebabs, i.e., interconnected lamellae in a stack, seems to be responsible for the high viscous force in the oriented samples. The absence of necking has to be ascribed to the high viscous force.

The disadvantages of NW-TN-LCD (normally white twisted nematic liquid crystal display) are discussed. The reason that the negative birefringent polyimide thin films are used to compensate NW-TN-LCD to decrease off-axis leakage, improve contrast ratios and enlarge viewing angeles is explained. A certain polyimide thin film is taken as an example to show the compensation effect on NW-TN-LCD. (C) 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Epitaxial crystallization behavior of HDPE/iPP double layers under quenching and annealing conditions has been studied by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results obtained from bright field TEM observations indicate that in the as-quenched state the HDPE that is in direct contact with the surface of the oriented iPP substrate recrystallizes in the form of oriented crystallites dispersed on the iPP substrate. The electron diffraction results show that besides the two normally observed epitaxial orientations between HDPE and iPP, there is also a special orientation with [001](HDPE)parallel to[001](iPP). The HDPE which is in contact with the clean surface of a glass slide crystallizes in small lamellae with random orientation. In the boundary region, the epitaxially crystallized HDPE small lamellae stop right on the boundary of the oriented iPP film. If the quenched samples are annealed at 128 degrees C (below T-m of HDPE) for 2 h, the small HDPE crystals grow to thick lamellae in both areas. But only the epitaxial orientation of HDPE with [001](HDPE)parallel to[101](iPP) has been observed.

The psychrotrophic Antarctic alga, Chlorella vulgaris NJ-7, grows under an extreme environment of low temperature and high salinity. In an effort to better understand the correlation between fatty acid metabolism and acclimation to Antarctic environment, we analyzed its fatty acid compositions. An extremely high amount of Delta(12) unsaturated fatty acids was identified which prompted us to speculate about the involvement of Delta(12) fatty acid desaturase in the process of acclimation. A full-length cDNA sequence, designated CvFAD2, was isolated from C. vulgaris NJ-7 via reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and RACE methods. Sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis showed that the gene was homologous to known microsomal Delta(12)-FADs with the conserved histidine motifs. Heterologous expression in yeast was used to confirm the regioselectivity and the function of CvFAD2. Linoleic acid (18:2), normally not present in wild-type yeast cells, was detected in transformants of CvFAD2. The induction of CvFAD2 at an mRNA level under cold stress and high salinity is detected by real-time PCR. The results showed that both temperature and salinity motivated the upregulation of CvFAD2 expression. The accumulation of CvFAD2 increased 2.2-fold at 15A degrees C and 3.9-fold at 4A degrees C compared to the alga at 25A degrees C. Meanwhile a 1.7- and 8.5-fold increase at 3 and 6% NaCl was detected. These data suggest that CvFAD2 is the enzyme responsible for the Delta(12) fatty acids desaturation involved in the adaption to cold and high salinity for Antarctic C. vugaris NJ-7.

MEP is a member of thioester-containing protein (TEP) family found in Zhikong scallop Chlamys farreri and is involved in innate immunity against invading microbes. In the present study, the genomic DNA of CfTEP was cloned and characterized. The genomic DNA sequence of CfTEP consisted of 40 exons and 39 introns spanning 35 kb with all exon-intron junction sequences agreeing with the GT/AG consensus. The genomic organization of CfTEP was similar to human and mouse 0 rather than ciona C3-1 and Drosophila dTEP2. By RT-PCR technique, seven different cDNA variants of CfTEP (designated as CfTEP-A-CfTEP-G) were cloned from scallop gonad. CfTEP-A-CfTEP-F were produced by alternative splicing of six mutually exclusive exons (exons 19-24), respectively, which encoded the highly variable central region. While in CfTEP-G, the deletion of all the six exons introduced a new translation stop site and might trigger nonsense mediated decay (NMD). The mRNA expression and the proportion of the seven CfTEP variant transcripts were examined in the gonad of scallops after bacterial challenge. The fragments containing the highly variable central region of UTEP were amplified by RT-PCR and a 100 positive clones were sequenced randomly. The expression profiles of the seven MEP variants were different and displayed the sex and bacteria dependent manner. In the blank, sea water and Listonella anguillarum challenged subgroups of male scallops, all the transcripts detected were CfTEP-G isoform. In the Micrococcus luteus challenged subgroup, the isoforms expressed and their proportions were CfTEP-F (54%), CfTEP-B (23%), CfTEP-A (10%), CfTEP-C (7%) and CfTEP-E (6%). However, in the gonad of female scallops, only CfTEP-A were found in blank and sea water challenged subgroups. After L anguillarum or M. luteus challenge, four and five isoforms were detected, respectively, with CfTEP-F isoform being the most one in the both subgroups. These results suggested that the evolution of TEP genes was very complex, and that the diverse CfTEP transcripts generated by alternative splicing played an important role as pattern recognition receptors in the innate immune defense of scallops. Using a Biolistic PDS 1000/He system, healthy thalli of Gracilaria changii were bombarded with gold particles coated with plasmid DNA containing the lacZ reporter gene. Transient expression of lacZ was observed in bombarded thalli under the rupture-disc pressures of 4482, 6206, 7584 and 8963 KPa, two days after bombardment. Although G. changii exhibits a slight blue background, positive expression and the background colour can be clearly differentiated. The results indicate that lacZ could be a useful reporter gene and that SV40 promoter could be an effective promoter for Gracilaria transformation.

Porphyra yezoensis Ueda (Rhodophyta) is a seaweed of economic importance with a typical dimorphic life cycle consisting of a leafy gametophyte and a filamentous sporophyte. Recently, it has been recognized as a model system for fundamental and applied studies in marine biological sciences. Conchospore, a major spore linking the two distinct multicellular phases in the life cycle, is most widely used in the breeding of P. yezoensis. In this paper, the early-stage development of conchospore, including the attachment and the cell wall formation, was studied with fluorescent reagents staining and Scanning Electron Microscopy detection. Results displayed: (I) the cell wall began to be generated after culturing for 4 h in the attached conchospores; (2) the initially released conchospores were plastids with some filmy, amorphous substance on the surface, and they attached to the fibers firmly via the actively secreted mucilaginous substances after their touch to the fibers; (3) cellulase and pectolase prohibited the attachment of conchospores in the different ways; and (4) only attached conchospores generated cell walls and developed normally, while the suspending ones could not. It indicated that the cellulose played crucial roles in the permanent attachment as the pectin did in the initial attachment. The conchospore attachment seemed to trigger the cell wall formation and the further development. Affects of light on the development of conchospores were also discussed. The results showed that high intensity (200 mu mol.m(-2).s(-1)) and long-wave (>= 580 nm) light facilitated the division rate of conchospores. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
