This paper presents a new technique for the detectionof islanding conditions in electrical power systems. This problem isespecially prevalent in systems with significant penetrations of distributedrenewable generation. The proposed technique is based onthe application of principal component analysis (PCA) to data setsof wide-area frequency measurements, recorded by phasor measurementunits. The PCA approach was able to detect islandingaccurately and quickly when compared with conventional RoCoFtechniques, as well as with the frequency difference and change-ofangledifference methods recently proposed in the literature. Thereliability and accuracy of the proposed PCA approach is demonstratedby using a number of test cases, which consider islandingand nonislanding events. The test cases are based on real data, recorded from several phasor measurement units located in theU.K. power system.

Field testing studies are required for tidal turbine device developers to determine the performance of their turbines in tidal flows. Full-scale testing of the SCHOTTEL tidal turbine has been conducted at Queen’s University Belfast’s tidal site at Strangford Lough, NI. The device was mounted on a floating barge. Testing was conducted over 48 days, for 288 h, during flood tides in daylight hours. Several instruments were deployed, resulting in an expansive data set. The performance results from this data set are presented here. The device, rated to 50 kW at 2.75 m/s was tested in flows up to 2.5 m/s, producing up to 19 kW, when time-averaged. The thrust on the turbine reached 17 kN in the maximum flow. The maximum system efficiency of the turbine in these flows reached 35%. The test campaign was very successful and further tests may be conducted at higher flow speeds in a similar tidal environment.

This paper brings together and analyzes recent work based on the interpretation of the electrochemical measurements made on a modified micro-abrasion-corrosion tester used in several research programmes. These programmes investigated the role of abradant size, test solution pH in abrasion-corrosion of biomaterials, the abrasion-corrosion performance of sintered and thermally sprayed tungsten carbide surfaces under downhole drilling environments and the abrasion-corrosion of UNS S32205 duplex stainless steel. Various abrasion tests were conducted under two-body grooving, three-body rolling and mixed grooving-rolling abrasion conditions, with and without abrasives, on cast F75 cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo) alloy in simulated body fluids, 2205 in chloride containing solutions as well as sprayed and sintered tungsten carbide surfaces in simulated downhole fluids. Pre- and post-test inspections based on optical and scanning electron microscopy analysis are used to help interpret the electrochemical response and current noise measurements made in situ during micro-abrasion-corrosion tests. The complex wear and corrosion mechanisms and their dependence on the microstructure and surface composition as a function of the pH, abrasive concentration, size and type are detailed and linked to the electrochemical signals. The electrochemical versus mechanical processes are plotted for different test parameters and this new approach is used to interpret tribo-corrosion test data to give greater insights into different tribo-corrosion systems. Thus new approaches to interpreting in-situ electrochemical responses to surfaces under different abrasive wear rates, different abrasives and liquid environments (pH and NaCl levels) are made. This representation is directly related to the mechano-electrochemical processes on the surface and avoids quantification of numerous synergistic, antagonistic and additive terms associated with repeat experiments. Using high-energy (∼0.5 GeV) electron beams generated by laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA), bremsstrahlung radiation was created by interacting these beams with various solid targets. Secondary processes generate high-energy electrons, positrons, and neutrons, which can be measured shot-to-shot using magnetic spectrometers, short half-life activation, and Compton scattering. Presented here are proof-of-principle results from a high-resolution, high-energy gamma-ray spectrometer capable of single-shot operation, and high repetition rate activation diagnostics. We describe the techniques used in these measurements and their potential applications in diagnosing LWFA electron beams and measuring high-energy radiation from laser-plasma interactions.

Many kinetic models have appeared in literature in past decades using two main approaches: the traditional global kinetics approach, or the more complex micro-kinetics approach. Whether global or micro-kinetics, kinetic models have been based on experimental data obtained at the end of the monolith. The experimental procedure using end pipe analysis may give an accurate overview of the reaction mechanisms that occur; however, the lack of information from within the catalyst can ultimately lead to inaccuracies in the kinetic model and parameters used.

Using SpaciMS, a spatially resolved experimental technique developed at the Queen's University Belfast, information from within the catalyst can be obtained. This minimally invasive technique provides detailed information of the gas concentration and temperature profile from inside the catalytic monolith. This paper presents a kinetic model and simulations validated against experimental data obtained from three positions inside the catalyst monolith at 2, 14, and 26 mm in, using data from the SpaciMS. Also, simulations of end pipe analysis, using a commercial reactor, for the CO oxidation are presented and analyzed. The simulations presented are for varying concentrations of both CO and O2 (0.5 % and 1 % CO, 0.5 % and 2 % O2) for both the global and micro-kinetic approach.

In this paper, the results of radio channel measurements between two hypothetical cellular handsets in an outdoor urban environment are reported. The device-to-device channel measurements were made at 868 MHz and investigated a number of different everyday usage scenarios such as the devices being held at the user's heads, placed in a pocket while one of the users rotated or both moved randomly. It was found that shadowing of the main signal path caused by the human body will be an important factor in future device-to-device communications at this frequency. The recently proposed shadowed κ-μ fading model was used to characterize these channels and shown to provide a good description of the measured data.

In this paper we compare a number of the classical models used to characterize fading in body area networks (BANs) with the recently proposed shadowed ț–ȝ fading model. In particular, we focus on BAN channels which are considered to be susceptible to shadowing by the human body. The measurements considered in this study were conducted at 2.45 GHz for hypothetical BAN channels operating in both anechoic and highly reverberant environments while the person was moving. Compared to the Rice, Nakagami and lognormal fading models, it was found that the recently proposed shadowed ț௅μ fading model provided an enhanced fit to the measured data.

This paper argues that biometric verification evaluations can obscure vulnerabilities that increase the chances that an attacker could be falsely accepted. This can occur because existing evaluations implicitly assume that an imposter claiming a false identity would claim a random identity rather than consciously selecting a target to impersonate. This paper shows how an attacker can select a target with a similar biometric signature in order to increase their chances of false acceptance. It demonstrates this effect using a publicly available iris recognition algorithm. The evaluation shows that the system can be vulnerable to attackers targeting subjects who are enrolled with a smaller section of iris due to occlusion. The evaluation shows how the traditional DET curve analysis conceals this vulnerability. As a result, traditional analysis underestimates the importance of an existing score normalisation method for addressing occlusion. The paper concludes by evaluating how the targeted false acceptance rate increases with the number of available targets. Consistent with a previous investigation of targeted face verification performance, the experiment shows that the false acceptance rate can be modelled using the traditional FAR measure with an additional term that is proportional to the logarithm of the number of available targets.

When applying biometric algorithms to forensic verification, false acceptance and false rejection can mean a failure to identify a criminal, or worse, lead to the prosecution of individuals for crimes they did not commit. It is therefore critical that biometric evaluations be performed as accurately as possible to determine their legitimacy as a forensic tool. This paper argues that, for forensic verification scenarios, traditional performance measures are insufficiently accurate. This inaccuracy occurs because existing verification evaluations implicitly assume that an imposter claiming a false identity would claim a random identity rather than consciously selecting a target to impersonate. In addition to describing this new vulnerability, the paper describes a novel Targeted.. FAR metric that combines the traditional False Acceptance Rate (FAR) measure with a term that indicates how performance degrades with the number of potential targets. The paper includes an evaluation of the effects of targeted impersonation on an existing academic face verification system. This evaluation reveals that even with a relatively small number of targets false acceptance rates can increase significantly, making the analysed biometric systems unreliable.

The current-voltage-temperature characteristics of PtSi/p-Si Schottky barrier diodes were measured in the temperature range 60-115 K. Deviation of the ideality factor from unity below 80 K may be modelled using the so-called T-0 parameter with T-0 = 18 K. It is also shown that the curvature in the Richardson plots may be remedied by using the flatband rather than the zero-bias saturation current density. Physically, the departure from ideality is interpreted in terms of an inhomogeneous Schottky contact. Here we determine a mean barrier height at T = 0 K, phi(b)(-0) = 223 mV, with an (assumed) Gaussian distribution of standard deviation sigma(phi) = 12.5 mV. These data are correlated with the zero-bias barrier height, phi(j)(0) = 192 mV (at T = 90 K), the photoresponse barrier height, phi(ph) = 205 mV, and the flatband barrier height, phi(fb) = 214 mV. Finally, the temperature coefficient of the flatband barrier was found to be -0.121 mV K-1, which is approximately equal to 1/2(dE(g)(i)/dT), thus suggesting that the Fermi level at the interface is pinned to the middle of the band gap.

Human occupants within indoor environments are not always stationary and their movement will lead to temporal channel variations that strongly affect the quality of indoor wireless communication systems. This paper describes a statistical channel characterization, based on experimental measurements, of human body effects on line-of-sight indoor narrowband propagation at 5.2 GHz. The analysis shows that, as the number of pedestrians within the measurement location increases, the Ricean K-factor that best fits the empirical data tends to decrease proportionally, ranging from K=7 with 1 pedestrian to K=0 with 4 pedestrians. Level crossing rate results were Rice distributed, while average fade duration results were significantly higher than theoretically computed Rice and Rayleigh, due to the fades caused by pedestrians. A novel CDF that accurately characterizes the 5.2 GHz channel in the considered indoor environment is proposed. For the first time, the received envelope CDF is explicitly described in terms of a quantitative measurement of pedestrian traffic within the indoor environment.
