The photoproduction of η-mesons off different nuclei has been measured with the CBELSA/TAPS detector system for incident photon energies between 15002200 MeV. The transparency ratio has been deduced and compared to theoretical calculations describing the propagation of η-mesons in nuclei. The comparison indicates a width of the η-meson of the order of =1525 Me=1525 MeV at ρ0 for an average momentum pη=1050 MeV/cp=1050 MeV/c, at which the η-meson is produced in the nuclear rest frame. The inelastic ηN cross section is estimated to be 310 mb. Parameterizing the photoproduction cross section of η-mesons by (A)=0Aα(A)=0Aα, a value of α=0.80.0=0.840.03 has been deduced.

We derive analytical expressions for the excitation energy of the isoscalar giant monopole and quadrupole resonances in finite nuclei, by using the scaling method and the extended ThomasFermi approach to relativistic mean-field theory. We study the ability of several nonlinear σ parameter sets of common use in reproducing the experimental data. For monopole oscillations the calculations agree better with experiment when the nuclear matter incompressibility of the relativistic interaction lies in the range 220260 MeV. The breathing-mode energies of the scaling method compare satisfactorily with those obtained in relativistic RPA and time-dependent mean-field calculations. For quadrupole oscillations, all the analyzed nonlinear parameter sets reproduce the empirical trends reasonably well.

By using the scaling method we derive the virial theorem for the relativistic mean field model of nuclei treated in the ThomasFermi approach. The ThomasFermi solutions statisfy the stability condition against scaling. We apply the formalism to study the excitation energy of the breathing mode in finite nuclei with several relativistic parameter sets of common use.

Difficulties in the doctor-patient relationship may arise because of differences in socio-cultural background. The aim of this study was to evaluate the doctors' satisfaction in an ambulatory care setting when confronted with 3 different cultural groups (Swiss, foreign residents, refugees) and to review some preconceived ideas. Actually, the foreign population did not consult more often in emergencies than the Swiss population, nor did it present more frequently with somatizations in first interview. However, the doctors felt globally less satisfied with the refugees than with the other patients, mainly because of communication difficulties and therefore a less satisfying doctor-patient relationship. Nevertheless, the doctors felt they had the same diagnostic accuracy in the 3 groups. Studies on the satisfaction of primary care doctors are important, because the quality of the doctor-patient relationship directly influences the quality of medical care.

To evaluate primary care physicians' attitude towards implementation of rotavirus (RV) immunisation into the Swiss immunisation schedule, an eight-question internet-based questionnaire was sent to the 3799 subscribers of InfoVac, a nationwide web-based expert network on immunisation issues, which reaches >;95% of paediatricians and smaller proportions of other primary care physicians. Five demographic variables were also inquired. Descriptive statistics and multivariate analyses for the main outcome "acceptance of routine RV immunisation" and other variables were performed. Diffusion of innovation theory was used for data assessment. Nine-hundred seventy-seven questionnaires were returned (26%). Fifty percent of participants were paediatricians. Routine RV immunisation was supported by 146 participants (15%; so called early adopters), dismissed by 620 (64%), leaving 211 (21%) undecided. However, when asked whether they would recommend RV vaccination to parents if it were officially recommended by the federal authorities and reimbursed, 467 (48.5%; so called early majority) agreed to recommend RV immunisation. Multivariate analysis revealed that physicians who would immunise their own child (OR: 5.1; 95% CI: 4.1-6.3), hospital-based physicians (OR: 1.6; 95% CI: 1.1-2.3) and physicians from the French (OR: 1.6; 95% CI: 1.2-2.3) and Italian speaking areas of Switzerland (OR: 2.5; 95% CI: 1.1-5.8) were more likely to support RV immunisation. Diffusion of innovation theory predicts a >80% implementation if approximately 50% of a given population support an innovation. Introduction of RV immunisation in Switzerland is likely to be successful, if (i) the federal authorities issue an official recommendation and (ii) costs are covered by basic health care insurance.

AIM: MRI and PET with 18F-fluoro-ethyl-tyrosine (FET) have been increasingly used to evaluate patients with gliomas. Our purpose was to assess the additive value of MR spectroscopy (MRS), diffusion imaging and dynamic FET-PET for glioma grading. PATIENTS, METHODS: 38 patients (42 15 aged, F/M: 0.46) with untreated histologically proven brain gliomas were included. All underwent conventional MRI, MRS, diffusion sequences, and FET-PET within 4 weeks. Performances of tumour FET time-activity-curve, early-to-middle SUVmax ratio, choline / creatine ratio and ADC histogram distribution pattern for gliomas grading were assessed, as compared to histology. Combination of these parameters and respective odds were also evaluated. RESULTS: Tumour time-activity-curve reached the best accuracy (67%) when taken alone to distinguish between low and high-grade gliomas, followed by ADC histogram analysis (65%). Combination of time-activity-curve and ADC histogram analysis improved the sensitivity from 67% to 86% and the specificity from 63-67% to 100% (p < 0.008). On multivariate logistic regression analysis, negative slope of the tumour FET time-activity-curve however remains the best predictor of high-grade glioma (odds 7.6, SE 6.8, p = 0.022). CONCLUSION: Combination of dynamic FET-PET and diffusion MRI reached good performance for gliomas grading. The use of FET-PET/MR may be highly relevant in the initial assessment of primary brain tumours.

Indium tin oxide (ITO) is one of the widely used transparent conductive oxides (TCO) for application as transparent electrode in thin film silicon solar cells or thin film transistors owing to its low resistivity and high transparency. Nevertheless, indium is a scarce and expensive element and ITO films require high deposition temperature to achieve good electrical and optical properties. On the other hand, although not competing as ITO, doped Zinc Oxide (ZnO) is a promising and cheaper alternative. Therefore, our strategy has been to deposit ITO and ZnO multicomponent thin films at room temperature by radiofrequency (RF) magnetron co-sputtering in order to achieve TCOs with reduced indium content. Thin films of the quaternary system Zn-In-Sn-O (ZITO) with improved electrical and optical properties have been achieved. The samples were deposited by applying different RF powers to ZnO target while keeping a constant RF power to ITO target. This led to ZITO films with zinc content ratio varying between 0 and 67%. The optical, electrical and morphological properties have been thoroughly studied. The film composition was analysed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. The films with 17% zinc content ratio showed the lowest resistivity (6.6 × 10 - 4 cm) and the highest transmittance (above 80% in the visible range). Though X-ray Diffraction studies showed amorphous nature for the films, using High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy we found that the microstructure of the films consisted of nanometric crystals embedded in a compact amorphous matrix. The effect of post deposition annealing on the films in both reducing and oxidizing atmospheres were studied. The changes were found to strongly depend on the zinc content ratio in the films.

In this work we study aluminium laser-fired contacts for intrinsic amorphous silicon layers deposited by Hot-Wire CVD. This structure could be used as an alternative low temperature back contact for rear passivated heterojunction solar cells. An infrared Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) has been used to locally fire the aluminium through the thin amorphous silicon layers. Under optimized laser firing parameters, very low specific contact resistances (ρc 10 mΩ cm2) have been obtained on 2.8 Ω cm p-type c-Si wafers. This investigation focuses on maintaining the passivation quality of the interface without an excessive increase in the series resistance of the device.

Amorphous and nanocrystalline silicon films obtained by Hot-Wire Chemical Vapor Deposition have been incorporated as active layers in n-type coplanar top gate thin film transistors deposited on glass substrates covered with SiO 2. Amorphous silicon devices exhibited mobility values of 1.3 cm 2 V - 1 s - 1, which are very high taking into account the amorphous nature of the material. Nanocrystalline transistors presented mobility values as high as 11.5 cm 2 V - 1 s - 1 and resulted in low threshold voltage shift ( 0.5 V).

We present structural and electrical properties for p- and n-type layers grown close to the transition between a-Si:H and nc-Si:H onto different substrates: Corning 1737 glass, ZnO:Al-coated glass and stainless steel. Structural properties were observed to depend on the substrate properties for samples grown under the same deposition conditions. Different behaviour was observed for n- and p-type material. Stainless steel seemed to enhance crystallinity when dealing with n-type layers, whereas an increased crystalline fraction was obtained on glass for p-type samples. Electrical conduction in the direction perpendicular to the substrate seemed to be mainly determined by the interfaces or by the existence of an amorphous incubation layer that might determine the electrical behaviour. In the direction perpendicular to the substrate, n-type layers exhibited a lower resistance value than p-type ones, showing better contact properties between the layer and the substrate.

In this paper we present results on phosphorous-doped μc-Si:H by catalytic chemical vapour deposition in a reactor with an internal arrangement that does not include a shutter. An incubation phase of around 20 nm seems to be the result of the uncontrolled conditions that take place during the first stages of deposition. The optimal deposition conditions found lead to a material with a dark conductivity of 12.8 S/cm, an activation energy of 0.026 eV and a crystalline fraction of 0.86. These values make the layers suitable to be implemented in solar cells.

Hydrogenated amorphous and nanocrystalline silicon, deposited by catalytic chemical vapour deposition, have been doped during deposition by the addition of diborane and phosphine in the feed gas, with concentrations in the region of 1%. The crystalline fraction, dopant concentration and electrical properties of the films are studied. The nanocrystalline films exhibited a high doping efficiency, both for n and p doping, and electrical characteristics similar to those of plasma-deposited films. The doping efficiency of n-type amorphous silicon is similar to that obtained for plasma-deposited electronic-grade amorphous silicon, whereas p-type layers show a doping efficiency of one order of magnitude lower. A higher deposition temperature of 450C was required to achieve p-type films with electrical characteristics similar to those of plasma-deposited films.

In this paper, we have presented results on silicon thin films deposited by hot-wire CVD at low substrate temperatures (200 °C). Films ranging from amorphous to nanocrystalline were obtained by varying the filament temperature from 1500 to 1800 C. A crystalline fraction of 50% was obtained for the sample deposited at 1700 °C. The results obtained seemed to indicate that atomic hydrogen plays a leading role in the obtaining of nanocrystalline silicon. The optoelectronic properties of the amorphous material obtained in these conditions are slightly poorer than the ones observed in device-grade films grown by plasma-enhanced CVD due to a higher hydrogen incorporation (13%).

In this paper we present new results on doped μc-Si:H thin films deposited by hot-wire chemical vapour deposition (HWCVD) in the very low temperature range (125-275°C). The doped layers were obtained by the addition of diborane or phosphine in the gas phase during deposition. The incorporation of boron and phosphorus in the films and their influence on the crystalline fraction are studied by secondary ion mass spectrometry and Raman spectroscopy, respectively. Good electrical transport properties were obtained in this deposition regime, with best dark conductivities of 2.6 and 9.8 S cm -1 for the p- and n-doped films, respectively. The effect of the hydrogen dilution and the layer thickness on the electrical properties are also studied. Some technological conclusions referred to cross contamination could be deduced from the nominally undoped samples obtained in the same chamber after p- and n-type heavily doped layers.

The metastable defects of a-Si:H samples annealed at temperatures in the 300-550C range have been studied by photothermal deflection spectroscopy (PDS). The light-soaked samples show an increase in optical absorption in the 0.8 to 1.5 eV range. The metastable defect density decreases when the annealing temperature increases, while the defect density increases. This decrease in the metastable defect density shows an almost linear correlation with the decrease in the hydrogen content of the samples, determined by IR transmission spectroscopy and thermal desorption spectroscopy.
