OBJECTIVE- To assess the relationship between clinical course after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and diabetes treatment. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS- Retrospective analysis of data from all patients aged 25-64 years admitted to hospitals in Perth, Australia, between 1985 and 1993 with AMI diagnosed according to the International Classification of Diseases (9th revision) criteria was conducted. Short- (28-day) and long-term survival and complications in diabetic and nondiabetic patients were compared. For diabetic patients, 28-day survival, dysrhythmias, heart block, and pulmonary edema were treated as outcomes, and factors related to each were assessed using multiple logistic regression. Diabetes treatment was added to the model to assess its significance. Long-term survival was compared by means of a Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS- Of 5,715 patients, 745 (12.9%) were diabetic. Mortality at 28 days was 12.0 and 28.1% for nondiabetic and diabetic patients, respectively (P < 0.001); there were no significant drug effects in the diabetic group. Ventricular fibrillation in diabetic patients taking glibenclamide (11.8%) was similar to that of nondiabetic patients (11.0%) but was lower than that for those patients taking either gliclazide (18.0%; 0.1 > P > 0.05) or insulin (22.8%; P < 0.05). There were no other treatment-related differences in acute complications. Long-term survival in diabetic patients was reduced in those taking digitalis and/or diuretics but type of diabetes treatment at discharge had no significant association with outcome. CONCLUSlONS- These results do not suggest that ischemic heart disease should influence the choice of diabetes treatment regimen in general or of sulfonylurea drug in particular.

Tissue responses to the application of Rototags and Jumbo Rototags in the first dorsal fin of Carcharhinus melanopterus, C. obscurus and C. plumbeus were examined. The acute response included tissue tearing and haemorrhage and was present by 5 days post-tagging. The intermediate response had begun by 20 days post-tagging and continued beyond 207 days. This response involved decreased red blood cell activity as the inflammatory response commenced. The chronic response had begun by 301 days and was complete by 553 days with a layer of fibrous connective tissue walling off the tag. External damage to the fin was caused by continued abrasion by the tag. Repair scales were observed at 242 days using scanning electron microscopy and were confirmed histologically in 61- and 553-day samples. Repair scales were not seen in areas of continuous abrasion. No infection was observed in tissues surrounding the wound. Disruption of the fin surface was observed due to abrasion by the tag, but did not appear to cause a severe tissue reaction. The tissue responses observed were consistent with a normal, but relatively slow, healing in the vicinity of the tag wound. Use of Rototags or Jumbo Rototags appears to be an efficient way of marking elasmobranchs with minimal damage to the shark. (C) 1998 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles.

The common approach of bioelectrical impedance analysis to estimate body water uses a wrist-to-ankle methodology which, although not indicated by theory, has the advantage of ease of application particularly for clinical studies involving patients with debilitating diseases. A number of authors have suggested the use of a segmental protocol in which the impedances of the trunk and limbs are measured separately to provide a methodology more in keeping with basic theory. The segmental protocol hits not, however, been generally adopted, partly because of the increased complexity involved in its application, and partly because studies comparing the two methodologies have not clearly demonstrated a significant improvement from the segmental methodology. We have conducted a small pilot study involving ten subjects to investigate the efficacy of the two methodologies in a group of normal subjects. The study did not require the independent measure of body water, by for example isotope dilution, as the subjects were maintained in a state of constant hydration with only the distribution between limbs and trunk changing as a result of change in posture. The results demonstrate a significant difference between the two methodologies in predicting the expected constancy of body water in this study, with the segmental methodology indicating a mean percentage change in extracellular water of -2.2%; which was not significantly different from the expected null result, whereas the wrist-to-ankle methodology indicated a mean percentage change in extracellular water of -6.6%. This is significantly different from the null result, and from the value obtained from the segmental methodology (p = 0.006). Similar results were obtained using estimates of total body water from the two methodologies. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Plasma leaking from damaged retinal blood vessels can have a significant impact on the pathologies of the posterior segment of the eye. Inflammation in the eye and metabolic change resulting from diabetes mellitus causes vascular leakage with alteration of the phenotype of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells and fibrocytes, resulting in changes in cell function. Phenotypically altered cells then significantly contribute to the pathogenesis of retinopathies by being incorporated into tractional membranes in the vitreous, where they secrete matrix molecules, such as fibronectin, and express altered cell surface antigens. We hypothesize that there is a direct relationship between the leaking of plasma and the proliferation and phenotypic change of RPE cells and fibroblasts, thus exacerbating the pathology of retinal disease. If the hypothesis is correct, control of vascular leakage becomes an important target of therapy in proliferative vitreoretinopathy.

Reaction of bis(ethane-1,2-diamine)copper(II) with acetaldehyde and nitromethane in methanol leads, stereoselectively, to the new macrocyclic complex (trans-5(R),7(R),12(S),14(S))-tetramethyl-6,13-dinitro-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane)copper(II) perchlorate alpha-[CuL1](ClO4)(2) in good yield. Reduction of the nitro groups affords the hexaamine (L-2), which was crystallized as [H4L2](ClO4)(4) . 2H(2)O and characterized by an X-ray crystal structure study (monoclinic P2(1)/n, a = 9.763(2) Angstrom, b = 12.1988(7) Angstrom, c = 13.036(2) Angstrom, beta = 105.668(7)degrees, Z = 2) and complexed with Cu-II to produce the complex beta-[Cu(H2L2)](ClO4)(4) . 2H(2)O, which has also been characterized by X-ray crystallography (monoclinic P2(1)/n, a = 9.717(4) Angstrom, b = 12.174(2) Angstrom, c = 13.036(5) Angstrom, beta = 106.51(2)degrees, Z = 2). Reaction of alpha-[CuL1](2+) with either basic hydrogen peroxide or dilute nitrous acid leads to mild reduction of the nitro groups to afford the ketoxime L-3 as its N-based isomeric Cu-II complexes, trans-I [CuL3](ClO4)(2) and trans-II [Cu(L-3)Cl]Cl . 7H(2)O, the latter of which has been characterized structurally: triclinic, <P(1)over bar> a = 10.8441(5) Angstrom, b = 11.6632(9) Angstrom, c = 11.8723(9) Angstrom, alpha = 113.634(7)degrees, beta = 95.744(5), gamma = 94.851(5)degrees Z = 2. Variations in the configurations of the coordinated amines in [CuL1](2+), [CuL2](2+), and [CuL3](2+) have a profound effect on the spectroscopy and electrochemistry of their complexes.

Phytophthora root rot (Phytophthora medicaginis) and colletotrichum crown rot (Colletotrichum trifoli) are the 2 most serious pathogens of lucerne in eastern Australia. Work reported in this paper shows that in glasshouse tests of the 11 most commonly grown Australian lucerne cultivars, the proportion of individual plants with resistance to both pathogens ranges from 0 (Hunter River and Aurora) through to a maximum of 19.8% (Sequel HR). Within 9 of the cultivars, the proportion of individual plants resistant to the 2 pathogens was <7%. Since these 2 diseases are known to cause serious losses in eastern Australia, the results indicate further improvement in lucerne production can be obtained by increasing the proportion of individual plants in a cultivar resistant to both pathogens. This would be best achieved by identifying dominant sources of resistance and incorporating this into on-going lucerne breeding programs.

The aim of the study was to test a revised conceptualization of the role of coping in adjustment to a low-control stressor-women's adjustment to a failed in vitro fertilization (NF) attempt. Data were collected prior to the IVF treatment (Time I) and twice after the failed NF attempt (1 to 2 weeks after finding out the results, n = 171, and fi weeks later, n = 139). Initial adjustment was assessed at Time I, whereas measures of coping and both self-report and partner ratings of adjustment were obtained at Times ? and 3. As predicted, escapist strategies and problem-management strategies (mainly at Time ?) were associated with poor adjustment, whereas problem-appraisal coping was associated with better adjustment., There was also support for the proposed positive relationship between adjustment and emotional approach coping (on self-report adjustment).

Some blockers of beta(1)- and beta(2)-adrenoceptors cause cardiostimulant effects through an atypical beta-adrenoceptor (putative beta(4)-adrenoceptor) that resembles the beta(3)-adrenoceptor. It is likely but not proven that the putative beta(4)-adrenoceptor is genetically distinct from the beta(3)-adrenoceptor. We therefore investigated whether or not the cardiac atypical beta-adrenoceptor could mediate agonist effects in mice lacking a functional beta(3)-adrenoceptor gene (beta(3)KO). (-)-CGP 12177, a beta(1)- and beta(2)-adrenoceptor blocker that causes agonist effects through both beta(3)-adrenoceptors and cardiac putative beta(4)-adrenoceptors, caused cardiostimulant effects that were not different in atria from wild-type (WT) mice and beta(3)KO mice. The effects of (-)-CGP 12177 were resistant to blockade by (-)-propranolol (200 nM) but were blocked by (-)-bupranolol (1 mu M) with an equilibrium dissociation constant of 15 nM in WT and 17 nM in beta(3)KO. (-)-[H-3]CGP 12177 labeled a similar density of the putative beta(4)-adrenoceptor in ventricular membranes from the hearts of both WT (B-max = 52 fmol/mg protein) and beta(3)KO (B-max = 53 fmol/mg protein) mice. The affinity of (-)-[H-3]CGP 12177 for the cardiac putative beta(4)-adrenoceptor was not different between WT (K-d = 46 nM) and beta(3)KO (K-d = 40 nM). These results provide definitive evidence that the cardiac putative beta(4)-adrenoceptor is distinct from the beta(3)-adrenoceptor.

Microencapsulation of lemon oil was undertaken with beta-cyclodextrin using a precipitation method at the five lemon oil to beta-cyclodextrin ratios of 3:97, 6:94, 9:91, 12:88, and 15:85 (w/w) in order to determine the effect of the ratio of lemon oil to beta-cyclodextrin on the inclusion efficiency of beta-cyclodextrin for encapsulating oil volatiles. The retention of lemon oil volatiles reached a maximum at the lemon oil to beta-cyclodextrin ratio of 6:94; however, the maximum inclusion capacity of beta-cyclodextrin and a maximum powder recovery were achieved at the ratio of 12:88, in which the beta-cyclodextrin complex contained 9.68% (w/w) lemon oil. The profile and proportion of selected flavor compounds in the beta-cyclodextrin complex and the starting lemon oil were not significantly different.

We consider one source of decoherence for a single trapped ion due to intensity and phase fluctuations in the exciting laser pulses. For simplicity we assume that the stochastic processes involved are white noise processes, which enables us to give a simple master equation description of this source of decoherence. This master equation is averaged over the noise, and is sufficient to describe the results of experiments that probe the oscillations in the electronic populations as energy is exchanged between the internal and electronic motion. Our results are in good qualitative agreement with recent experiments and predict that the decoherence rate will depend on vibrational quantum number in different ways depending on which vibrational excitation sideband is used.

The nutrient contents and accessions in litterfall over a period of 3 y are reported for undisturbed areas and at two sites disturbed by selective harvesting in tropical rain forest in North Queensland, Australia. Mean concentrations (mg g(-1) dry weight) of nutrients in litterfall ranged from 10 to 12 for nitrogen; 0.33 to 0.43 for phosphorus; 3.6 to 4.3 for potassium; 6.0 to 10.5 for calcium and 1.7 to 2.6 for magnesium. These concentrations are in the middle to lower part of the spectrum of values recorded for tropical forest. Accessions of nutrients in litterfall (kg ha(-1) y(-1)) ranged from 59 to 64 N; 1.9 to 2.4 P; 20 to 24K; 34 to 63 Ca; and 9 to 16 Mg. These rates, particularly for IN and P, are among the lowest recorded for tropical forests. There were no consistent between-site differences in total nutrient accessions in small litterfall. In terms of the contribution of litterfall to the accessions of nutrients to the forest floor, this suggests that the logged sites have recovered from the effects of selective harvesting within 25 y. Nutrient accessions at each site were distinctly seasonal, with maximum accessions occurring in the late dry season to late in the wet season. Leaf-fall accounted for the largest proportion of nutrient accessions over the study period, although at certain times accessions in both reproductive material and wood were significant. A cyclone which crossed the coast near the study sites resulted in large nutrient accessions over a short period but had little effect on the total annual accession. A comparison with previous studies of litterfall in Australian tropical rainforests indicates that nutrient return in litterfall is directly related to soil fertility.

In order to derive mice which expressed both the E7 open reading frame transgene of human papillomavirus type 16 in skin and MHC class 1 restriction elements for several E7-encoded cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) epitopes, K14.HPV16E7 mice which express E7 in basal keratinocytes were crossed to the F1 generation with A2.1 K-b transgenic mice which express the MHC binding cleft domains of human HLA A*0201, and murine H-2(b). F1 mice (denoted K14E7xA2.1) expressed E7 in the thymus at least as early as 2-5 days before birth. Immunisation of FVBxA2.1 control mice (transgenic for HLA A*0201 and H-2(b) but not for E7), with two HLA A*0201-restricted epitopes of E7 and one H-2(b)-restricted CTL epitope of E7, gave strong primary CTL responses recognising epitope-pulsed or constitutively E7-expressing syngeneic target cells. In contrast, in immunised K14E7xA2.1 mice, the CTL responses to the H-2(b) epitope and one of the HLA A*0201 CTL epitopes were strongly down-regulated, and to the other HLA A*0201 epitope, completely abolished, as demonstrated by percentage specific killing by bulk splenocyte cultures in cyrotoxicity assays, and by CTL precursor frequency analysis, In thymus-transplanted bone marrow radiation chimeras in which the immune system of K14E7xA2.1 mice was replaced by a FVBxA2.1 immune system, specific immunisation did not result in reemergence of strong E7-directed CTL responses. In agreement with these in vitro findings, specific immunisation failed to significantly alter the course of E7-associated tumour development in K14E7xA2.1 mice. These data are consistent with a model of central deletional CTL tolerance to E7-encoded epitopes recognised in the context of two distinct MHC class 1 restriction elements, and with the possibility of peripheral T-cell anergy maintained by expression of E7 in the skin. The present investigation assessed the reliability and validity of the scores of a subjective measure of desired aspirations and a behavioral measure of enacted aspirations. A sample of 5,655 employees was randomly split into two halves. Principal components analysis on Sample 1, followed by confirmatory factor analysis on Sample 2, confirmed the desired and enacted scales as distinct but related measures of managerial aspirations. The desired and enacted scales had satisfactory levels of internal consistency and temporal stability over a 1-year period. Relationships between the measures of desired and enacted managerial aspirations and both attitudinal and behavioral criteria, measured concurrently and 1 year later, provided preliminary support for convergent and discriminant validity for our sample. Desired aspirations demonstrated stronger validity than enacted aspirations. Although further examination of the psychometric properties of the scales is warranted, the present findings provide promising support for their validity and reliability for our sample.

Gas sorption by coal is closely related to its physical and chemical properties, which are, in turn, governed by coal type and rank. The role of coal type (sensu maceral composition) is not fully established but it is clear that coal type may affect both adsorption capacity and desorption rate. Adsorption capacity is closely related to micropore (pores <2 nm) development, which is rank and maceral dependent. Adsorption isotherms indicate that in most cases bright (vitrinite-rich) coals have a greater adsorption capacity than their dull (often inertinite-rich) equivalents. However, no differences, or even the opposing trend, may be observed in relation to coal type. Desorption rate investigations have been performed using selected bright and dull coal samples in a high pressure microbalance. Interpretation of results using unipore spherical and bidisperse pore models indicate the importance of the pore structure. Bright, vitrinite-rich coals usually have the slowest desorption rates which is associated with their highly microporous structure. However, rapid desorption in bright coals may be related to development of extensive, unmineralised fracture systems. Both macro-and micro-pore systems are implicated in the more rapidly desorbing dull coals. Some dull, inertinite-rich coals may rapidly desorb due to a predominance of large, open cell lumina. Mineral matter is essentially nonadsorbent to coal gases and acts as a simple diluent. However, mineral-rich coals may be associated with more rapid desorption. Coal rank and type (maceral composition) per se do not appear to be the critical factors in controlling gas sorption, but rather the influence they exert over pore structure development.
