The concept of open innovation has recently gained widespread attention, and is particularly relevant now as many firms endeavouring to implement open innovation, face different sets of challenges associated with managing it. Prior research on open innovation has focused on the internal processes dealing with open innovation implementation and the organizational changes, already taking place or yet required in companies order to succeed in the global open innovation market. Despite the intensive research on open innovation, the question of what influences its adoption by companies in different contexts has not received much attention in studies. To fill this gap, this thesis contribute to the discussion on open innovation influencing factors by bringing in the perspective of environmental impacts, i.e. gathering data on possible sources of external influences, classifying them and testing their systemic impact through conceptual system dynamics simulation model. The insights from data collection and conceptualization in modelling are used to answer the question of how the external environment affects the adoption of open innovation. The thesis research is presented through five research papers reflecting the method triangulation based study (conducted at initial stage as case study, later as quantitative analysis and finally as system dynamics simulation). This multitude of methods was used to collect the possible external influence factors and to assess their impact (on positive/negative scale rather than numerical). The results obtained throughout the thesis research bring valuable insights into understanding of open innovation influencing factors inside a firm’s operating environment, point out the balance required in the system for successful open innovation performance and discover the existence of tipping point of open innovation success when driven by market dynamics and structures. The practical implications on how firms and policy-makers can leverage environment for their potential benefits are offered in the conclusions.

RESUMO O nitrogênio é um dos macronutrientes essenciais aos seres vivos, o que o torna um dos fatores limitantes para o crescimento vegetal. Apenas uma parcela dos procariotos, os diazotróficos, possui a capacidade de reduzir o nitrogênio atmosférico para outras formas disponíveis às plantas. A bracatinga é uma espécie arbórea de importância econômica capaz de estabelecer simbiose mutualística com organismos diazotróficos, sendo os seus principais usos: produção de energia, madeira, forragem, indústria química de produtos naturais, apicultura, paisagismo e sombreamento e recuperação de áreas degradadas e zonas ripárias. Este estudo objetivou estabelecer relação entre a diversidade cultural e morfológica e a variabilidade genética dos isolados nodulantes em bracatinga de diferentes condições edafoclimáticas. Coletaram-se nódulos radiculares retirados ao acaso em sete áreas compreendidas entre o Vale do Itajaí, Planalto Sul e Meio-Oeste do Estado de Santa Catarina. Foi observada ampla diversidade cultural entre os diazotróficos presentes, havendo predomínio de isolados de rápido crescimento, de colônia com coloração branca leitosa, formato circular, borda lisa e superfície mucoide. Entre os parâmetros avaliados, a transparência da colônia, a produção de muco e a alteração do pH foram considerados relevantes para a diferenciação dos isolados. A caracterização taxonômica dos isolados foi realizada por comparação dos fragmentos sequenciados, sendo as espécies isoladas deste conjunto amostral pertencentes aos gêneros Burkholderia, Pantoea, Pseudomonas e Rhizobium.

Yritysostojen määrä on historiallisen suuri 2000-luvulla, vaikka melkein puolet niistä epäonnistuu. Aineettomilla tekijöillä, kuten organisaatiokulttuureilla, on keskeinen rooli yritysostojen onnistumisissa. Myös case yritys on aktiivinen yritysostoissa ja haluaa arvioida integraatioprosessinsa tehokkuutta. Siten diplomityön tarkoituksena on luoda työkalu organisaatiokulttuurien yhteensopivuuden arvioimiseksi, jotta ostopäätöksentekoa sekä integraation suunnittelua voitaisiin tukea paremmin yrityksessä. Diplomityö vastaakin kysymyksiin, kuten miten arvioida kulttuurista yhteensopivuutta ennen integraatiota integraatioprosessin parantamiseksi sekä mitkä ovat olleet kaikkein ongelmallisimmat ja toisaalta kaikkein menestyksekkäimmät kulttuuritekijät tutkitussa integraatiossa. Kulttuurisen yhteensopivuuden arviointi tulisi nähdä prosessina osana yrityskauppaa. Prosessin tulisi alkaa kulttuurisen integraation tavoitteiden määrittämisellä sekä organisaatiokulttuurin käsitteen ymmärtämisellä. Kulttuurianalyysi tulisi suorittaa työpajan avulla. Sen tulisi käsitellä ainakin yhdeksän kulttuurin osa-aluetta: innovatiivisuus, päätöksenteko, ihmissuuntautuneisuus, kommunikaatio, kontrolli, asiakassuuntautuneisuus, ajanhallinta, identifikaatio, sekä kollektivismi. Lisäksi kuhunkin dimensioon liittyvään kysymykseen tulisi vastata pisteillä yhdestä viiteen, jolloin voidaan piirtää kulttuurisen yhteensopivuuden kuvio. Tämän jälkeen johdon tulisi keskustella tuloksista vielä kerran tarkemmin ja lopulta koota tulokset kirjalliseksi raportiksi. Tutkitussa integraatiossa parhaiten integraatiota tukivat ihmissuuntautuneisuus sekä ajanhallinta (työn ja vapaa-ajan välinen tasapaino sekä tulevaisuus-suuntautuneisuus). Haasteellisimmat kulttuuritekijät koskivat päätöksentekoa, kommunikaatiota ja kontrollia, jotka vaikuttavat olevan tyypillisiä ongelmia ison yrityksen ostaessa pienemmän yrityksen.

The evaluation of technologies employed at the agricultural production system such as crop rotation and soil preparation, both associated with crop-livestock integration, is crucial. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the incorporation of lime for three no-tillage systems and cultural managements in system of crop-livestock integration, with emphasis on corn grain yield. The experiment was conducted from January 2003 to April 2005 at Selvíria city, MS, in Dystroferric Red Latosol, clay texture. The experimental design was randomized blocks with split plots consisted of three main treatments, aimed the soil physics conditioning and the incorporation of lime: PD - No-no-tillage; CM - minimum no-tillage, and PC - conventional no-tillage; and of two secondary treatments related to the management: rotation and crop succession, with four replications. Data on agronomic traits of maize were analyzed: plant height, stem diameter, height of the first spike insertion, 100 grains weight and grain yield. The results showed that the maize produced under the system of crop-livestock integration is quite feasible, showing that grain yields are comparable to averages in the region and the different soil physical conditioning and incorporation of lime did not influence the corn yield as well as the cultural managements, rotation and succession, did not affect the maize crop behavior after two years of cultivation.

OBJETIVO: O carcinoma espinocelular CEC da base da língua tem um comportamento agressivo, disseminando-se precocemente para o pescoço uni ou bilateralmente. O objetivo deste trabalho é estabelecer critérios de tratamento eletivo ou terapêutico dos linfonodos cervicais metastáticos ou não para o CEC da base de língua. MÉTODO: Estudo retrospectivo de 290 pacientes com CEC de base de língua atendidos no Departamento de Cirurgia de Cabeça e Pescoço e Otorrinolaringologia do Hospital Heliópolis, Hosphel, São Paulo, de 1997 a 2000. Após análise loco-regional, foram classificados segundo os níveis I, II, III, IV e V do estadiamento TNM da UICC (1998). Os resultados foram analisados segundo o teste do Qui-quadrado para o estudo da associação de sítios, tamanho do tumor, presença de metástases e invasão da linha média. RESULTADOS: Houve um predomínio do sexo masculino em relação ao feminino (9:1), da 6ª década, dos fumantes e etilistas (83,8%). Quanto à disseminação linfonodal, diagnosticamos N0 (21,0%), N1 (13,4%), N2 (43,1%), N3 (22,5%) e níveis I(11,6%), II(69,0%), III (13,5%), IV (2,8%) e V (3,1%). Quanto à invasão da linha média, não houve relação significante com o nível comprometido. CONCLUSÃO: O tratamento do CEC da base da língua deve envolver o sítio primário e os níveis de disseminação linfonodal, uni e bilateral.

OBJETIVO: Determinar a importância da tomografia computadorizada na mudança do paradigma cirúrgico no carcinoma espinocelular (CEC) da boca e orofaringe. MÉTODO: De 1991 e 2004, nos Departamentos de Cirurgia de Cabeça e Pescoço/ORL e Radiologia do Hospital Heliópolis, foram analisados, retrospectivamente, tomografias computadorizadas de 30 pacientes, 25 homens e cinco mulheres, com idades variando de 25 a 77 anos, todos com diagnóstico de carcinoma epidermóide do soalho da boca e/ou da língua oral e orofaringe. Todos os exames foram avaliados por dois radiologistas, separadamente, sem o conhecimento prévio do estadiamento clínico, sendo analisada a disseminação local-regional para os diferentes sítios. Para análise interobservadores, o índice Kappa foi calculado para estimar a concordância entre os mesmos, sendo o nível de significância adotado o valor de 0,05. RESULTADO: A análise da concordância entre os observadores foi considerada excelente (Kappa: 0,81 - 1,00) para três subsítios (linha média, espaço mastigador e cadeia linfonodal jugulo-carotídea alta); boa (Kappa: 0,61 - 0,80) para 10 subsítios (soalho da boca e língua oral, ramo da mandíbula, trígono retromolar, espaço submandibular, loja amigdalina e cadeias linfonodais submentoniana, submandibular, jugulo-carotídea média, jugulo-carotídea baixa e espinal); moderada (Kappa: 0,41 - 0,60) para dois subsítios (corpo da mandíbula e base da língua) e não foi possível calcular o Kappa para um subsítio (cadeia linfonodal retrofaríngea). CONCLUSÃO: A concordância interobservadores predominou de boa a excelente, sendo os valores estatisticamente significantes.

In my doctoral thesis I evaluate strategies designed to cope with the multicultural nature of four European nations: Great Britain, The Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark. I also analyse and clarify the question of the place of religion in present-day Europe. The empirical material analysed in the study consists of politicians’ statements and policy documents dealing with immigration policy and religious and values education in the four countries. In addition, I analyse statements issued by the Council of Europe regarding religious education, along with all cases relevant to religious education brought before the United Nations Human Rights Committee or the European Court of Human Rights. The theoretical framework is formed by the scholarly debate – among philosophers, sociologists and scholars of religion in education – concerning the question of a just society. Special emphasis is given to philosophical theories that are in favour of granting special group rights to religious minorities in the name of equal treatment. With regard to the question of the appropriate place of religion, I apply Kim Knott’s methodological model for locating religion in secular contexts, and Émile Durkheim’s theory as to the significance of religion and collective sentiments in uniting adherents or members of a group into a single moral community. The study shows that even when the positive side of immigration, as a potential force for the enrichment of the public culture, is acknowledged, there is anxiety as to the successful integration of immigrants. The premises and goals of immigration policies have also been questioned. One central problem is the incommensurability between the values upheld by Western liberal democracies and certain religious traditions, above all those of Islam. Great Britain, The Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark have tightened control over their citizens’ ethical attitudes and want to regulate these as well. In coping with cultural diversity, the significance of education, especially religious education, plays a significant role; as future citizens, pupils are expected to internalise the society’s core values as well as gaining an understanding of different cultures and ways of life. It is also worth noting that both the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights have recently expressed the view that one important goal of religious education is to enable pupils to be critical and autonomous with regard to different religions and moral positions. The study shows that religion is not seen as purely a personal matter. Religion is closely linked to individual and national identity, and religious traditions thus have a place in the public domain. It should be noted, however, that a religious tradition – more precisely, an interpretation of religious tradition – qualifies as a legitimate partner in the democratic decision-making process only if it shares similar values with Western European nations.
