Results from a large scale soil mapping on the North Frisian mainland indicate, that field characteristics, particularly the grain-size, bedding, and degree of compaction, with in general determine the soil units mapped, are closely correlated with each other and with other field and laboratory data. Exchangable ions and the Ca/Mg-ratio, however, indicate no explainable connections with the soil units and with most of the other field characteristics but are determined postsedimentarily by processes of the development of soil and landscape, such as desalting and decalcification, silicate weathering, fresh- and salt-water innundations, salty precipitations, salty groundwater and fertilization. Therefore the Ca/Mg-ratio is not suitable to differentiate between more clayey compacted Knick-marsh soils and less clayey permeable Klei-marsh soils. The results confirm that marsh-soils may only be classified and mapped by means of all available field-data which have to be supplemented by laboratory investigations.

Approximately quantitative values are presented on the mineral content of the clay and silt fractions of marine sediments from the Wadden Sea. Considering the extent of clay mineral transformation and neoformation in a marine environment, it is believed to be insignificant, because of the sea water and pore solutions of the sediments seem to represent - with the exception of a small Mg-surplus - a kind of equilibrium solution for three- and four-layer minerals, which neither favors a considerable base fixation nor base release. Therefore, illite neoformation during halmyrolysis or early diagenesis seems to be impossible, especially because of unfavourable relations of potassium to all other cations in the sea water. Obviously the neoformation of illite takes place only during later diagenetic stages. The processes of clay mineral neoformation in a marine environment are probably restricted to the formation of amorphous (Mg-)Fe-Si-particles which may be first steps in the formation of chamosites, chlorites or smectites.

Under defined laboratory and field conditions, the investigation of percolating water through soil columns (podsol, lessive and peat) down to groundwater table shows that the main factors which control the chemical characteristics of the percolates are: precipitation, evaporation, infiltration rate, soil type, depth and dissolved organic substances. Evaporation and percolation velocity influences the Na+, SO4**2- and Cl- concentrations. Low percolation velocity leads also to longer percolation times and water logging in less permeable strata, which results in lower Eh-values and higher CO2-concentrations due to low gas exchange with the atmosphere. Ca2+ and Mg2+ carbonate concentration depends on soil type and depth. Metamorphism and decomposition of organic substances involve NO3 reduction and K+, Mg2+, SO4**2-, CO2, Fe2+,3+ transport. The analytical data were evaluated with multi variate statistical methods.

There is increasing interest in the use of continuous housing systems for dairy cows, with various reasons put forward to advocate such systems. However, the welfare of dairy cows is typically perceived to be better within pasture-based systems, although such judgements are often not scientifically based. The aim of this review was to interrogate the existing scientific literature to compare the welfare, including health, of dairy cows in continuously housed and pasture-based systems. While summarising existing work, knowledge gaps and directions for future research are also identified. The scope of the review is broad, examining relevant topics under three main headings; health, behaviour, and physiology. Regarding health, cows on pasture-based systems had lower levels of lameness, hoof pathologies, hock lesions, mastitis, uterine disease, and mortality compared to cows on continuously housed systems. Pasture access also had benefits for dairy cow behaviour, in terms of grazing, improved lying / resting times, and lower levels of aggression. Moreover, when given the choice between pasture and indoor housing, cows showed an overall preference for pasture, particularly at night. However, the review highlighted the need for a deeper understanding of cow preference and behaviour. Potential areas for concern within pasture-based systems included physiological indicators of more severe negative energy balance, and in some situations, the potential for compromised welfare with exposure to unpredictable weather conditions. In summary, the results from this review highlight that there remain considerable animal welfare benefits from incorporating pasture access into dairy production systems.

The transition period is associated with the peak incidence of production problems, metabolic disorders and infectious diseases in dairy cows (Drackley, 1999). During this time the cow’s immune system seems to be weakened; it is apparent that metabolic challenges associated with the onset of lactation are factors capable of affecting immune function. However, the reasons for this state are not entirely clear (Goff, 2006). The negative energy balance associated with parturition leads to extensive mobilization of fatty acids stored in adipose tissue, thus, causing marked elevations in blood non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and B-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) concentrations (Drackley et al., 2001). Prepartal level of dietary energy can potentially affect adipose tissue deposition and, thus, the amount of NEFA released into blood and available for metabolism in liver (Drackley et al., 2005). The current feeding practices for pregnant non-lactating cows has been called into question because increasing amounts of moderate-to-high energy diets (i.e. those more similar to lactation diets in the content of energy) during the last 3 wk postpartum have largely failed to overcome peripartal health problems, excessive body condition loss after calving, or declining fertility (Beever, 2006). Current prepartal feeding practices can lead to elevated intakes of energy, which can increase fat deposition in the viscera and upon parturition lead to compromised liver metabolism (Beever, 2006, Drackley et al., 2005). Our general hypothesis was that overfeeding dietary energy during the dry period, accompanied by the metabolic challenges associated with the onset of lactation would render the cow’s immune function less responsive early postpartum. The chapters in this dissertation evaluated neutrophil function, metabolic and inflammation indices and gene expression affected by the plane of dietary energy prepartum and an early post-partum inflammatory challenge in dairy cows. The diet effect in this experiment was transcendental during the transition period and potentially during the entire lactation. Changes in energy balance were observed and provided a good model to study the challenges associated with the onset of lactation. Overall the LPS model provided a consistent response representing an inflammation incident; however the changes in metabolic indices were sudden and hard to detect in most of the cases during the days following the challenge. In general overfeeding dietary energy during the dry period resulted in a less responsive immune function during the early postpartum. In other words, controlling the dietary energy prepartum has more benefits for the dairy cow during transition.
