(Table 1) Properties of grab sampled sediments from the Nha Trang Bay

General characteristics of macrobenthos of muddy sediments of the subtidal (19-24 m) zone in the Nha Trang Bay (South Vietnam) were described based on the survey performed in April-May 2002. The mean abundance of organisms was 637 ind/m**2 and the mean biomass was 2.3 g/m**2. Sixty-seven macrobenthic species were found during the study. The main structural features of the macrobenthos were high species diversity, low species recurrence, and high evenness of species structure with the absence of clearly manifested dominants. The number of species encountered regularly increased with the increase in the total area sampled from 210 to 5000 cm**2, though the relation did not reach saturation. Similarities and differences between the macrobenthos structures in the Nha Trang Bay and those in some tropical and boreal soft-bottom communities are discussed.

Bottom invertebrates and madreporarian corals in the Canary upwelling area

Composition and distribution of bottom fauna, especially scleractinian and gorgonarian corals, collected in the area of the Canary upwelling are discussed. Five species of scleractinian corals and one gorgonarian coral were found. Dasmosmillia lymani, Flabellum angulare, Leptopsammia chevalieri, and Bebryce mollis are new in the investigated area. It is shown that bottom fauna of the Canary upwelling area could be regarded as intermediate between the ordinary shallow-water community and extremely oligomixed fauna of intensive upwellings.

Stable isotope ratios of foraminifera from ODP Hole 171B-1051B sediments

The primary aim of the this investigation was to examine the stability of subtropical sea-surface temperatures and reconstruct the surface-to-benthos thermal gradient. High-resolution stable isotopic analyses (18O and 13C) were conducted on late middle Eocene planktonic and benthic foraminifers recovered from Hole 1051B, Blake Nose, western North Atlantic. The sequence comprises a siliceous nannofossil and foraminifer ooze, with well-preserved calcareous microfossils. Isotopic examination was conducted on the mixed-layer dweller Morozovella spinulosa and the benthic foraminifer Nuttalides truempyi at this subtropical site.
