The theoretical aspects of square wave voltammetry were discussed. Reversible, irreversible and quase-reversible electrode reactions were analyzed and the correlations between parameters like frequency, period, square wave potential and amplitude were showed. In this way, diagnostic relationships allow to characterize the electrode process. The analytical applications were discussed in base of the increment in the analytical response (current) due to the characteristics of the developed equations and the unique mode of collecting the electrode response, i.e., the direct and reverse signals. Finally, recent advances in the basic theory, as the applications to the hydrodynamic electrode and the ultramicroelectrode were also analyzed, and the multiple pulses square wave voltammetry was also introduced.

Cyclic imides consists of an important family of organic compounds with therapeutic potential. In this review, emphasis will be given to the chemical and biological aspects of several sub-classes of this family, incluing maleimides, succinimides, glutarimides, naphtalimides, etc. Additionally, will be focused the contribution of our research group in this field.

Beowulf cluster is perhaps the cheapest way to construct a high performance computers. The strategy of reaching a high power computing isn't so difficult, but buying and configurating should be done carefully. Technical aspects of hardware components and message-passing libraries are considered, with some results given as examples.

The asymmetric Michael addition reactions using chiral imines, under neutral conditions (deracemizing alkylation process), constitute one of the main methods for the stereocontrolled elaboration of quaternary carbon centers. This protocol is based on the conjugate addition of secondary chiral enamines to electron-deficient alkenes. The focus of this report deals with the discussion of regio- and stereochemical aspects of the deracemizing alkylation process concerning enamines bearing a resident chiral center.

This article presents a brief historical outline of cheese manufacture. Chemical, biochemical and microbiological aspects are presented: the main constituents of curd, the reactions involved in the development of flavour, and the role of micro-organisms and enzymes in the fermentation and maturation processes. A brief description of the characteristics of some cheeses is also given.

A large variety of organic and inorganic compounds may be found in wastewater which can contribute to environmental contamination. Oxidation processes with ozone (O3; O3/UV; O3/H2O2; O3/TiO2; O3/Mn+2) and the use of ozone in the pre- or post-treatment of wastewater combined with biological processes has been extensively studied for the treatment of effluents. The aim of this work was to evaluate the potential of the ozonation process in the treatment of several industrial wastewaters, namely effluents from paper mills, and textile, whey (dairy industry), pharmaceutic sand pesticides plants.

The Baccharis genus is represented by more than 500 species distributed mainly in the tropical areas of South America. Many of them are extensively used in folk medicine in the treatment or prevention of anemias, inflammations, diabetes and stomach, liver and prostate diseases. Phytochemical and biological investigations in about 120 species resulted mainly in the isolation of clerodane and labdane diterpenes and flavonoid aglicones with the flavone unit being the most frequent.

The history of the rare earths is rich in innovation and these elements have been the object of study of a number of scientists. Rare earths are used practically in almost all aspects of life and these applications are due to their outstanding properties, mainly spectroscopic and magnetic. In industry, the applications of rare earths are many, such as in catalysis, phosphors, magnetism, glass and lasers. In biological systems, rare earths are used, for example, as luminescent probes in the investigation of binding sites in proteins, labels in immunoassays and in noninvasive tests.

The indigo blue dye is widely used in the textile industry. When discarded, besides polluting the environment, it affects the appearance and transparency of aquatic bodies, causing damage to flora and fauna. The removal of this dye from industrial effluents is difficult due to its resistance towards degradation. This work proposes the recovery of indigo blue by electroflocculation, as a subsidy for the treatment of effluents from the jeans industry.

Comparison of national budgets for R&D is often made but it should consider the relative productivity and their factors. In Brazil, inefficiency factors as well as their causes have been diagnosed since the late 60's and solutions have been proposed within various governmental organisms, from CNPq to the strategy think tanks. Problems that hinder R&D and innovation in Brazil are reviewed from a historical perspective together with the proposed solutions providing a detailed analysis of the difficulties that have to be overcome to achieve a more effective innovation environment, adequate for the present times, challenges and opportunities.

Given that innovation is fundamental for competitiveness, and that it is intrinsically linked to knowledge, it has become essential to foster effective interaction between the Brazilian productive sector and universities and R&D centers. This interface should be created by means of the model used in developed countries: Observatory of Industrial Activities and Trends in Science, Technology and Innovation. The present work describes its main functions, using examples of activities undertaken by the Chemical Industry Information System of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro related to production systems of primary and high-tech industries, examining the diffusion of knowledge to decision-makers.

Biocatalysts have innumerous advantages with respect to classical chemical processes, such as high specificity. Lipases (EC 3.1.1.3) are biocatalysts with large application in synthesis and hydrolysis reactions of triacylglycerols. The search for new sources of lipases has been intensified in the last years due to the high cost of microbial and animal lipases, wich restricts their use on an industrial scale. Lipases obtained from the latex of Carica papaya, Carica pentagona, Euphorbia characias, E. wulfenii, known for their proteolytic properties, are a good alternative source. In this review, we describe the well-known sources of vegetal lipases extracted from the latex and present some of their industrial applications.

Several cannabinoid compounds present therapeutic properties, but also have psychotropic effects, limiting their use as medicine. Nowadays, many important discoveries on the compounds extracted from the plant Cannabis sativa (cannabinoids) have contributed to understand the therapeutic properties of these compounds. The main discoveries in the last years on the cannabinoid compounds were: the cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, the endogenous cannabinoids and the possible mechanisms of action involved in the interaction between cannabinoid compounds and the biological receptors. So, from the therapeutical aspects presented in this work, we intended to show the evolution of the Cannabis sativa research and the possible medicinal use of cannabinoid compounds.

The aromatic six-membered heterocycles having three nitrogen atoms are denominated triazines. Among these heterocycles, isocyanuric chloride and cyanuric chloride are inexpensive and readily available 1,3,5-triazine derivatives, which have been attracting significant attention of organic chemists due to their different kinds of applications, which vary from pharmaceuticals to explosives. This short overview explores their uses in synthetic methods, as chlorinating and oxidating agents and some procedures for their preparation.

This study analyzes the physico-chemical and biological parameters of freshwater aquatic environments in coastal areas of the State of Pernambuco, Brazil, where snail vector foci and cases of schistosomiasis have been recorded. The tests were carried out using standard methods and sediments were analyzed using the X-ray fluorescence technique. The micro-algae were analyzed using conventional microscopy. The most abundant chemical elements in the sediments were Fe, Ca, Si and Al and there were high concentrations of electrolytes in comparison with data published in the literature. The mean values for salinity (7.7 g/L) and sulfate (489 mg/L) were much higher than normal for freshwater environments. The micro-algae identified are those that inhabit environments with higher levels of salinity. The snail Biomphalaria glabrata seems, therefore, to be more tolerant to salty environments and this constitutes a risk of spread of schistosomiasis.
