We present a low-frequency electrical noise measurement in graphene based field effect transistors. For single layer graphene (SLG), the resistance fluctuations is governed by the screening of the charge impurities by the mobile charges. However, in case of Bilayer graphene (BLG), the electrical noise is strongly connected to its band structure, and unlike single layer graphene, displays a minimum when the gap between the conduction and valence band is zero. Using double gated BLG devices we have tuned the zero gap and charge neutrality points independently, which offers a versatile mechanism to investigate the low-energy band structure, charge localization and screening properties of bilayer graphene

It was proposed earlier [P. L. Sachdev, K. R. C. Nair, and V. G. Tikekar, J. Math. Phys. 27, 1506 (1986)] that the Euler Painlevé equation yy[script `]+ay[script ']2+ f(x)yy[script ']+g(x) y2+by[script ']+c=0 represents the generalized Burgers equations (GBE's) in the same manner as Painlevé equations do the KdV type. The GBE was treated with a damping term in some detail. In this paper another GBE ut+uaux+Ju/2t =(gd/2)uxx (the nonplanar Burgers equation) is considered. It is found that its self-similar form is again governed by the Euler Painlevé equation. The ranges of the parameter alpha for which solutions of the connection problem to the self-similar equation exist are obtained numerically and confirmed via some integral relations derived from the ODE's. Special exact analytic solutions for the nonplanar Burgers equation are also obtained. These generalize the well-known single hump solutions for the Burgers equation to other geometries J=1,2; the nonlinear convection term, however, is not quadratic in these cases. This study fortifies the conjecture regarding the importance of the Euler Painlevé equation with respect to GBE's. Journal of Mathematical Physics is copyrighted by The American Institute of Physics.

The problem of decaying states and resonances is examined within the framework of scattering theory in a rigged Hilbert space formalism. The stationary free,''in,'' and ''out'' eigenvectors of formal scattering theory, which have a rigorous setting in rigged Hilbert space, are considered to be analytic functions of the energy eigenvalue. The value of these analytic functions at any point of regularity, real or complex, is an eigenvector with eigenvalue equal to the position of the point. The poles of the eigenvector families give origin to other eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian: the singularities of the ''out'' eigenvector family are the same as those of the continued S matrix, so that resonances are seen as eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian with eigenvalue equal to their location in the complex energy plane. Cauchy theorem then provides for expansions in terms of ''complete'' sets of eigenvectors with complex eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian. Applying such expansions to the survival amplitude of a decaying state, one finds that resonances give discrete contributions with purely exponential time behavior; the background is of course present, but explicitly separated. The resolvent of the Hamiltonian, restricted to the nuclear space appearing in the rigged Hilbert space, can be continued across the absolutely continuous spectrum; the singularities of the continuation are the same as those of the ''out'' eigenvectors. The free, ''in'' and ''out'' eigenvectors with complex eigenvalues and those corresponding to resonances can be approximated by physical vectors in the Hilbert space, as plane waves can. The need for having some further physical information in addition to the specification of the total Hamiltonian is apparent in the proposed framework. The formalism is applied to the Lee–Friedrichs model and to the scattering of a spinless particle by a local central potential. Enhancement of the photoacoustic signal from condensed materials by several folds is achieved by the introduction of a liquid with high vapor pressure in the photoacoustic cell. The enhancement is especially marked for low absorption coefficients and high chopping frequencies. Typically the enhancement is two to nine times in the presence of diethyl ether at 293 K. A linear relationship is observed between the enhancement and the vapor pressure of the liquid.

A recent article on the unified theory of Elementary Particle Forces by Howard Georgi and Sheldon Glashow (September 1980, page 30) points out that the unification of strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions involves the appearance of particles having almost macroscopic masses of about a nanogram (~1014 GeV). Such superheavy particles seem to be an inevitable feature of most grand unified theories Gravitation is still, however, left out of these various schemes.

We present comprehensive studies of dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, and magnetotransport of two sets of La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 samples, one exhibits phase separation and the other exhibits spin glass behavior. Our study reveals that the phase separation in La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 is neither inherent nor ubiquitous; rather, it is a consequence of preparation condition. It is realized that the low temperature annealed sample exhibits phase separation while the high temperature annealed one shows the characteristic of spin glass behavior. This study shows that the most probable magnetic state of La0.85Sr0.15CoO3 is spin glass.

A new four-hole cylindrical cantilever probe is described which could be used for three-dimensional flow surveys. The probe is more compact than the usual cylindrical type allowing for closer approach to a boundary. The probe is robust and gives good reproducibility. It can be used for a wide range of pitch angle. Review of Scientific Instruments is copyrighted by The American Institute of Physics.

A monolithic surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonator operating at 156 MHz, in which the frequency controlling element is a Fabry–Perot type of SAW resonator and the gain element is a monolithic SAW amplifier (SiOx/InSb/SiOx structure located inside the SAW resonator cavity) is described and experimental details presented. Based on the existing experimental data, an uhf monolithic ring resonator oscillator is proposed. Journal of Applied Physics is copyrighted by The American Institute of Physics.

Initial-value problems for the generalized Burgers equation (GBE) ut+u betaux+lambdaualpha =(delta/2)uxx are discussed for the single hump type of initial data both continuous and discontinuous. The numerical solution is carried to the self-similar ``intermediate asymptotic'' regime when the solution is given analytically by the self-similar form. The nonlinear (transformed) ordinary differential equations (ODE's) describing the self-similar form are generalizations of a class discussed by Euler and Painlevé and quoted by Kamke. These ODE's are new, and it is postulated that they characterize GBE's in the same manner as the Painlev equations categorize the Kortweg-de Vries (KdV) type. A connection problem for some related ODE's satisfying proper asymptotic conditions at x=±[infinity], is solved. The range of amplitude parameter is found for which the solution of the connection problem exists. The other solutions of the above GBE, which display several interesting features such as peaking, breaking, and a long shelf on the left for negative values of the damping coefficient lambda, are also discussed. The results are compared with those holding for the modified KdV equation with damping. Journal of Mathematical Physics is copyrighted by The American Institute of Physics.

This paper describes the experimental and theoretical studies carried out on particulate composites consisting of BaTiO3, graphite, and rubber. It is shown that such composites exhibit a positive voltage coefficient of resistance beyond a certain voltage. A theoretical model developed to explain the observed V-R characteristics and their dependence on parameters of the composite like composition and grain size of the particles is also described. These composites seem to be useful as varistors with positive voltage coefficient of resistance and may find applications as voltage-regulating devices. A comparative study of the electric-field induced hopping transport probes the effective dimensionality (D) in bulk and ultrathin films of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The values of the scaling function exponents for the electroconductance are found to be consistent with that in three-dimensional and two-dimensional systems. The significant difference in threshold voltage in these two types of SWNTs is a consequence of the variation in the number of energetically favorable sites available for charge carriers to hop by using the energy from the field. Furthermore, a modification to the magnetotransport is observed under high electric-fields.

A period timing device suitable for processing laser Doppler anemometer signals has been described here. The important features of this instrument are: it is inexpensive, simple to operate, and easy to fabricate. When the concentration of scattering particles is low the Doppler signal is in the form of a burst and the Doppler frequency is measured by timing the zero crossings of the signal. But the presence of noise calls for the use of validation criterion, and a 5–8 cycles comparison has been used in this instrument. Validation criterion requires the differential count between the 5 and 8 cycles to be multiplied by predetermined numbers that prescribe the accuracy of measurement. By choosing these numbers to be binary numbers, much simplification in circuit design has been accomplished since this permits the use of shift registers for multiplication. Validation accuracies of 1.6%, 3.2%, 6.3%, and 12.5% are possible with this device. The design presented here is for a 16-bit processor and uses TTL components. By substituting Schottky barrier TTLs the clock frequency can be increased from about 10 to 30 MHz resulting in an extension in the range of the instrument. Neutron powder diffraction and temperature dependent dielectric studies were carried out on Ca-substituted Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3, i.e., (Na0.5Bi0.5)(1-x)CaxTiO3. Stabilization of an orthorhombic phase even at a low Ca concentration (0.05 < x < 0.10) suggests that Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT) is susceptible to orthorhombic distortion. The orthorhombic and rhombohedral phases coexist for x=0.10, suggesting these phases to be nearly degenerate. The orthorhombic distortion favoring tendency of Ca assists in promoting the inherent instability with regard to this structure in pure NBT, which was reported recently.

We present results of a study of the two-impurity Anderson model using a thermodynamic scaling theory developed recently. The model is characterized by the Coulomb energy U, the orbital energy epsilond, the d-level width Gamma, and the separation between impurities R. If Gamma<<−epsilond<physics maps onto that of the two-impurity Kondo problem, discussed by us elsewhere; the main difference is that the RKKY interaction can acquire an antiferromagnetic contribution with a (kFR)−2 envelope over a restricted range of kFR. In this case impurity-impurity interactions can be substantial. The other interesting case is when the impurities have a ''fluctuating valence'' with the singlet lying lower in energy, i.e., epsilond>~Gamma. Here we find that the single-impurity physics dominates the low-temperature behavior, and impurity-impurity interactions are perturbative. The qualitative features of the temperature-dependent susceptibility are discussed. Journal of Applied Physics is copyrighted by The American Institute of Physics.

Gas discharge plasmas formed at atmospheric pressure and near room temperature have recently been shown as a promising tool for cancer treatment. The mechanism of the plasma action is attributed to generation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, electric fields, charges, and photons. The relative importance of different modes of action of atmospheric-pressure plasmas depends on the process parameters and specific treatment objects. Hence, an in-depth understanding of biological mechanisms that underpin plasma-induced death in cancer cells is required to optimise plasma processing conditions. Here, the intracellular factors involved in the observed anti-cancer activity in melanoma Mel007 cells are studied, focusing on the effect of the plasma treatment dose on the expression of tumour suppressor protein TP73. Over-expression of TP73 causes cell growth arrest and/or apoptosis, and hence can potentially be targeted to enhance killing efficacy and selectivity of the plasma treatment. It is shown that the plasma treatment induces dose-dependent up-regulation of TP73 gene expression, resulting in significantly elevated levels of TP73 RNA and protein in plasma-treated melanoma cells. Silencing of TP73 expression by means of RNA interference inhibited the anticancer effects of the plasma, similar to the effect of caspase inhibitor z-VAD or ROS scavenger N-acetyl cysteine. These results confirm the role of TP73 protein in dose-dependent regulation of anticancer activity of atmospheric-pressure plasmas.
